In 2013 Hasbro Studios did a pretty risky thing with one of their biggest franchises. They decided to take My Little Ponies and humanize them in a movie called My Little Pony: Equestria Girls. In that film one of the characters, Twilight Sparkles, discovers a mirror which allows her to travel into an alternate universe in order to recover a crown that was stolen from the Crystal Empire. Upon her arrival she is horrified to learn that she has turned into a human. This was a risky move for Hasbro because being magical ponies was their schtick.
Though there isn’t any four-legged characters walking around, I’m assuming it was a hit with the My Little Pony community because Hasbro decided to bring the Esquestria Girls back a few more times since. Now the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls have an all-new show which just premiered on Youtube. I had...

For the uninitiated (like yours truly), My Little Pony: Equestria Girls is going to take a bit of explanation. Once upon a time, My Little Pony was a cartoon that featured realistic-looking ponies meant to advertise Hasbro's toys meant for young girls. Before long, those pretty ponies changed into more cartoonish characters and included more mythical varieties, all anthropomorphized to carry out their magical adventures. In the 2000s, Mlp fans everywhere were introduced to Ponyville and the characters that populated it, while the 2010s introduced the smash-hit version, Friendship Is Magic. The ponies are still ponies in …...

Variety reports Hasbro Studios is moving forward with a My Little Pony movie. The film, which will be written by Joe Ballarini (Ice Age: Continental Drift), is scheduled for a 2017 release. As toys, My Little Ponies were first introduced in 1983. Since, they've gone through many incarnations on TV and direct-to-video movies; most recently, they can be seen in the very popular My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic series. Though 2013's My Little Pony: Equestria Girls and 2014's Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks had very limited theatrical runs, this upcoming feature would be the franchise's first wide release. So if you see a bearded man crying while wearing a colorful wig with a horn sticking out of it, you'll know.

Johnny Darrell's animated Slugterra: Return of the Elementals is a 63-minute episode of the Disney Xd series Slugterra, and little besides.
It makes no attempt to distinguish itself as a feature film, going so far as to recycle the show's opening credits and tacking on "Return of the Elementals" as an episode title. (This is presumably no problem for the preteen boys Slugterra is marketed toward, though it's an interesting contrast with last year's feature film My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, which respected its preteen-girl target demographic enough to be an actual movie and not just a retread of its source series.) The Lone Ranger limps into town, seven films enjoy £1m-plus weekends – and Despicable Me 2 is 2013's biggest film so far
Three kings
Just £100,000 separates the three films battling for the top spot in the weekend chart, with Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa edging out the competition to claim bragging rights. Literal bragging on this occasion, with distributor StudioCanal releasing the following statement from the North Norfolk Digital DJ: "Now is not a time for gloating or celebration, more a time for healing old wounds, a time to say: 'Let us join together in thanks that I am No 1 at the box office.' Hallelujah."
The comedy took £2.18m including £744,000 in Wednesday/Thursday previews, just ahead of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, with £2.14m including £861,000 in previews. However, it's the third-placed title – Grown Ups 2 – that won the battle over the Friday-to-Sunday weekend period, with £2.08m, including just £421,000 in previews.

"The Place Beyond the Pines"
What's It About? In "A Place Beyond the Pines" Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine") weaves together three vignettes starring Ryan Gosling as a bleach blonde, motorcycle-riding bank robber, Eva Mendes as a tough single mother, and Bradley Cooper as a conflicted cop. The first part of the film follows Luke (Gosling) as he robs banks to support his unexpected child and to win back the mother Romina (Mendes). Halfway through "Pines" breaks off to tell the story of Avery (Cooper), a wounded cop who discovers corruption in his department.
Why We're In: While "Pines" breaks off suddenly in various directions, the film's audacious screenplay and structure are what make it so powerful and compelling. Cianfrance's drama is one of novelistic proportions and definitely worth its long running time.

To me, Bumblebee will always be a Volkswagen Beetle.
That’s how it was for countless children who grew up watching and playing with Transformers in the early 1980s. Yeah, the Beetle isn’t as badass as most cars. It’s small, goofy, and cute — not very powerful. But the same was true of the kids who loved him, 6-to-10 year-olds who longed to prove, like that little battling ‘bot, that they could be brave and strong like the big ones around them.
When Michael Bay’s big-screen smash-and-grab blockbuster Transformers came out in 2007, the characters I loved as a boy were all back,...

To the delight of fans, Hasbro has announced that it will release a My Little Pony: Equestria Girls 2013 special edition pony, inspired by the popular DJ Pon-3 character at San Diego Comic-Con. Adding to the DJ Pon-3 celebrity status at this year's convention, Idw's Sdcc special edition My Little Pony #9 variant will feature a glitter cover with the fan-favorite pony.
Michael Kelly, Director of Global Publishing at Hasbro made this statement.
"Idw's special Sdcc edition of My Little Pony #9 is a must have for any My Little Pony fan. The cover is a great companion piece to Hasbro's special edition pony inspired by the DJ PON3 toy, and the additional content provides an exciting glimpse into the origins of Twilight Sparkle's adventures in My Little Pony: Equestria Girls. Where else can you get so much awesome in one comic?

Catch up with the last seven days in the world of film
The big story
This week has been trailer week: the biggest things around, film-wise, have been a clutch of snappy little promos teeing up very different films. First we had the new Scorsese: The Wolf of Wall Street, with Leo DiCaprio doing a Goodfellas-style job on the trading-floor fatcat.
That was followed by Frozen, Disney's Christmas cartoon; it's a (very loose) adaptation of The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen. Then, biggest of all, the return of Ron Burgundy in Anchorman: The Legend Continues. We said it was kind of a big deal, and it is.

Star Wars: Episode VII – casting wishlist revealed
Edward Snowden story on way to the big screen
Films made in 3D are a marketing gimmick, says director Alan Parker
