On the occasion of the first three episodes of “The Deal” screening at Red Sea International Film Festival, director Lee Jung-Gon and protagonist Yoo Seung-Ho talk to Panos Kotzathanasis about the inspiration and the focus of the series, how violence begins, how they choose the projects they are involved with, the most difficult scenes to shoot, the Korean drama and movie industry, and their future projects.

What was the inspiration behind the story?

Lee Jung-gon: My inspiration is the logline, a friend kidnapping a friend, because nowadays in S. Korea, there is a new phrase “the gold spoon and the dirt spoon” which means that the wealth gap among the parents represents the social level gap between their children. I wanted to tell a story about the Korean reality of young people.

Do you think it is easy for people to become violent, or it takes specific circumstances to do so?...

With a fast-growing box office expected to hit the billion-dollar mark by 2030 and rising numbers of streaming subscriptions, Saudi Arabia is at a key point in its journey into becoming a key global player when it comes to TV and film production.

Garry Keane and Stephen Gerard Kelly’s documentary In The Shadow Of Beirut, which is Ireland’s Oscar category this year, is headed to the Red Sea International Film Festival, running November 30 to December 9 in the Red Sea port of Jeddah.

The work, which is executive produced by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton as well as Siobhan Sinnerton under their HiddenLight Productions banner, is an immersive work capturing life in the slum neighborhoods of Sabra and Shatila neighborhoods outside Beirut, three decades after they hit world headlines following the infamous massacre of 1982.

The documentary is among six titles selected for the New Vision line-up alongside Jurgen Buedts and Sahim Omar Kalifa biodoc The Iraq’s Invisible Beauty about Iraqi photographer Latif Al Ani, which world premieres at the Red Sea, and Thien An Pham’s first feature Inside The Yellow Cocoon Shell which won Camera d’Or at Cannes this year.

Meg Ryan's new romantic comedy, What Happens Later, has a mixed reception on Rotten Tomatoes with a 51% score from 35 critics.
