Exclusive: Netflix’s Africa content team has reshuffled with ex-Amazon exec Kaye-Ann Williams brought in to oversee TV and movies as Tendeka Matatu exits.

Williams takes on the newly-created Director of Scripted Content role and will focus on local productions, overseeing a team that develops and creates African original films and series. She joins after a short stint as content boss at The Traitors South Africa producer Primedia Studios and is a former Head of Scripted Series and Movies at Prime Video/Amazon Studios, where she focused on South Africa.

Commencing her role next month, Williams will report to Ben Amadasun, Netflix’s Vice President of Middle East & Africa Content.

Exclusive: The latest original from African streamer Showmax, sci-fi drama The Fix, will open Mip Africa.

This marks the third year in a row a Showmax original has opened the event, which is an offshoot of MIPCOM. Last year, Canal+ co-production Spinners took the slot. Mip Africa is part of Fame Week Africa, a Reed Exhibitions initiative focused on African creativity.

The Fix, written and directed by Kelsey Egan, is set in a dystopian future Cape Town in South Africa where the air is toxic. A model, played by Grace van Dien (Stranger Things), takes a new designer drug at a party and suffers a shocking shocking transformation. Connie Chiume, the South African actor known for her role as tribal leader Zawavari in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther and 2022 sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, died Tuesday at a Johannesburg hospital. She was 72.

Her family announced the death on social media. A cause has not been disclosed.

The South African government paid tribute to Chiume on X: “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered.”

3 Body Problem clocked another week atop Netflix’s TV charts — though it appears to have been a slow week for the streamer’s series.

The drama series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, as well as Alexander Woo, clocked just 4.8M views in its third week at No. 1. Consider that the series tallied 11M views in its first weekend on Netflix and could only muster second place.

The series now sits just below 40M views in total since launch, which places it about halfway to the most popular list. It would need more than 83M views in its 91-day premiere window to beat out The Witcher Season 1. This is still looking relatively unlikely, since the series peaked with about 15.6M views in one week and viewership has steeply declined in the past two measurement periods.

The Gentlemen took third place again, but its viewership also declined to 3.7M views.

The Maze Runner and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials rank third and ninth, respectively, on Netflix's top 10 movies list for April 1 – 7. The movie are directed by Wes Ball, whose next project is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Despite the third Maze Runner movies being something of a disappointment critically and commercially, a fourth entry in the franchise is not off the table.

The drama series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss with Alexander Woo, drove another 8.3M views from April 1 to 7. That’s quite a bit down from last week’s more than 15M views but still enough to land it at No. 1. According to Netflix, it was in the Top 10 in 92 countries.

At this point, it is quite unlikely that the series would break into the most popular list, as viewership appears to be depreciating fairly quickly. However, there are still several weeks in the show’s premiere window for it to continue racking up views, if it can maintain a steady audience.

The Gentlemen remained in third place this week with 5.6M views, while Ripley debuted at No. 8 with 2.3M views. HBO has another Netflix hit on its hands, as Sex and the City...

“Sex and the City” made its debut on the Netflix Top 10 charts, with the hit HBO series coming in at No. 6 for the week of April 1-7.

One thing is clear: Jake Gyllenhaal’s straight-to-streaming “Road House” remake is a massive hit. Amazon Prime reported over 50 million worldwide viewers through its second streaming weekend and gateway app Reelgood reported it as the week’s #1 movie for March 21-27 in the U.S.
