Yeon Sang-ho gained worldwide acclaim with his debut live-action feature film, Train to Busan, and the companion animated film, Seoul Station. He followed that up with Psychokinesis, which was a superhero flick; Peninsula, a sequel to Train to Busan; and Jung_E, a sci-fi action thriller, to varying degrees of success. But while making all these feature films, I guess something clicked inside him, and he turned his sights towards religion—well, religious fanaticism, to be specific. Hellbound featured literal demons from the underworld, and the series imagined humanity turning against each other instead of putting up a united front against actual monsters that were dragging people to the netherworld. Parasyte: The Grey had body-snatching aliens in it, and one of its subplots involved an entity using religious politics to become the most powerful person in the country. Revelations is relatively grounded in reality in comparison to those two projects,...

Tombstone has held down a legacy as one of the best and most influential Westerns for over thirty years. It has also often been credited for revitalizing the genre for a whole new generation. Even though it's influenced many of the Westerns that have since followed, that certainly doesn't mean that it didn't take any inspiration from the ones that came before. In one of the film's best scenes, western fans may have noticed a few similarities between it and another famous scene from an equally beloved Western classic, and it is certainly no accident. As thematically different as the third and final chapter in Sergio Leone's 'Dollars' trilogy,...

Gerard Butler cemented his reputation as a formidable action star by battling Spartan foes in 300 and fending off White House invaders in Olympus Has Fallen, but he also made several segues into the rom-com genre. However, while his action roles have certainly found a dedicated audience, with the likes of Den of Thieves and its recent sequel scoring reasonably well with audiences and at the box office, one of his old comedy movies, The Ugly Truth, is now an unexpected hit on Hulu.
However, the movie really lived up to its name when it was released in 2009 as far as critics were concerned, as their 14% Tomatometer annihilation of the movie delivered an ugly truth that Butler is much better when shooting bad guys and saving presidents. Directed by Robert Luketic and co-starring Katherine Heigl, the film was panned for its contrived premise and risqué back-and-forth banter, but that is only half the story.

Fourteen years ago, Saqib Saleem and Saba Azad debuted with Y-Films’ Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge. I’m sure neither the actors nor the fans of that film, including yours truly, ever imagined seeing these two actors together in something like Zee 5’s Crime Beat, all these years later. I don’t have to tell you that the latest show is drastically different from Saleem and Azad’s debut film in every aspect. It is still a nice, perhaps unplanned, reunion. But if I have to point out the things that actively hurt Crime Beat, then the romance between Saleem and Azad’s characters should be at the top of the list. There is a professional rivalry angle at play as well, which works out.
Crime Beat, of course, is an eight-episode adaptation of author Somnath Batabyal’s 2013 novel, The Price You Pay. I got curious about the source material after getting this assignment,...

As one of the oldest film genres of all time, the Western has more than its fair share of legendary movies under its holster belt. The genres range from the often-imitated, never-duplicated The Searchers from the iconic John Ford to the Spaghetti Western pulp greatness of Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, all the way to the neo-Westerns of the modern day, like the Best Picture-winning No Country for Old Men, the highest peak that Marvel ever reached with Logan, or late-career Clint Eastwood classics like Cry Macho. As is to be expected, as the genre accumulated all-time great films, it also accumulated all-time great filmmakers, from actors to screenwriters to producers to cinematographers, all the way to, of course, directors.

While The Godfather contains many villainous figures, the lack of one true main antagonist remains a hallmark of Francis Ford Coppola's genre-defining gangster movie. Since releasing in 1972, The Godfather's reputation has aged like a fine Sicilian wine, and the first chapter of the Corleone family trilogy continues to be considered a leading contender when debating the greatest movies ever made. That same debate often yields the line "a movie is only as good as its villain," and that pearl of wisdom has been proven right on many occasions.
Heath Ledger's Joker was crucial to The Dark Knight, Ralph Fiennes' Amon Göth cut an unforgettably sinister presence in Schindler's List, and the Good and Ugly would have been a lot less interesting without the Bad. Curiously, The Godfather stands apart. Plenty of nefarious figures are littered throughout the story, but pinning down one main villain from The Godfather's cast is far from straightforward.

Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap has thrown his weight behind “Aakhri Ride” (The Last Ride), set to feature as one of the market picks at the upcoming Clermont-Ferrand short film market.
The film follows Aman, a Mumbai ride-share driver racing to secure dowry money for his sister’s wedding, whose night takes an unexpected turn when he picks up a mysterious passenger – a Chudail (demonic witch). The supernatural encounter forces him to confront deeper truths about urban survival and morality.
Several films directed by Kashyap have played at Cannes, including “Kennedy” (2023), “Psycho Raman” (2016), “Ugly” (2013), “Bombay Talkies” (2013) and “Gangs of Wasseypur” (2012). In addition, several films produced by him have made it to the Croisette, including “Masaan” (2015), “The Lunchbox” (2013), “Monsoon Shootout” (2013), “The Congress” (2013) and “Udaan” (2010).

If you love The Dollars Trilogy, and especially Lee Van Cleef’s role as a Western black hat, then you ought to check out his most notable horse opera as a leading man, Death Rides a Horse. The Italian-made Spaghetti Western — penned by The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly scribe Luciano Vincenzoni — was released in 1967 and follows a young gunfighter named Bill Meceita (John Phillip Law) who is hell-bent on killing the men who murdered his family. This leads him to a former outlaw named Ryan (Van Cleef), who is likewise after the men. Of course, his reasons are a bit more personal, leading to a showdown that rivals some of Clint Eastwood's best.

The reaction to Sonic the Hedgehog's infamous original design was truly an example of Internet solidarity. And even three movies and broken box office records later — including a brand-new benchmark as of yesterday evening — Sonic the Hedgehog 3 star Ben Schwartz can't help but joke about what could have been. As Sonic and his friends sprinted past the $1 billion mark, Schwartz took to the internet to thank his supporters, and remind us all about the worst video game design in history.

Although the duo don't appear onscreen together in the movie, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly star Clint Eastwood brought back one of that classic Western’s biggest stars for a later hit. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly might be one of star Clint Eastwood’s best Western movies, but the classic wouldn’t work if it weren’t for all three title characters. As The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’s ending proves, Tuco, Angel Eyes, and Blondie all play pivotal roles in the labyrinthine plot’s tangled web of double-crosses and betrayals. Notably, Eli Wallach’s Tuco provides consistent comedic relief.

Good storytellers understand that realism doesn’t mean that the storytelling needs to be the most boring thing imaginable, while the worst storytellers make the mistake of associating blandness with realism. For example, David Fincher is probably one of the best directors working right now who has delivered some of the greatest crime dramas ever, e.g., Se7en, Zodiac, and Mindhunter. Now, Fincher rarely resorts to over-the-top action or melodramatic acting to spice up his narratives. He usually keeps things low-key, to the extent where some accuse his work of being “emotionless,” and yet manages to keep things engaging and thrilling. And even when some of his stories don’t reach a cathartic and climactic conclusion, the journey feels worthwhile. The same can be said about Memories of Murder, Blow Out, The Silence of the Lambs, Insomnia, The Long Goodbye, Ugly, Dahaad, and more. Then there’s this year’s The Breakthrough,...

The Matrix has taken a break from science fiction in a new concept video. The beloved 1999 action movie has proven to have immense cultural influence, including Keanu Reeves' rise to prominence and the concept of a flawed simulation. The franchise has since enjoyed multiple sequels and several shorts. Each provides more insight into the complex and pre-existing world of Neo's horrifying reality. All the while, it continues to build on the established lore of the universe by remaining in familiar settings.
A new video, however, shies away from those typical settings. In fan footage generated by YouTuber Jae Kingsley, the post-apocalyptic wasteland is converted into a traditional Western:
The video is modeled off of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), and it features each major Matrix star in Western gear. There are still typical Wachowski-style slow-motion fights, though the characters also have standoffs with guns and lounge in taverns.

This 1967 Lee Van Cleef Western Is The Perfect Movie To Watch After Clint Eastwood's Dollars Trilogy
Thanks in large part to Lee Van Cleef, Death Rides A Horse makes for the perfect viewing experience after Clint Eastwood's The Man With No Name trilogy. Although The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is generally considered the quintessential Clint Eastwood Western, it's far more than just a vehicle for the actor. As indicated by its title, it's really a movie driven by a trio of stars, not just Eastwood. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly wouldn't have worked without the compelling performances offered by Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef. The latter is similarly vital to For a Few Dollars More as well.
Lee Van Cleef is in top form in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, which sees him play the film's villain to sinister perfection. His ruthless yet calm demeanor allows his character - known only by the nickname of "Angel Eyes" in...

The Sonic the Hedgehog films, the little blockbuster franchise that could. It seems like only yesterday when the first Sonic film was nearly universally mocked and maligned for who we now know as "Ugly Sonic." However, where most production companies would just take the loss and try a reboot again in a few years, Jeff Fowler's original Sonic film did something entirely unprecedented - it listened to the pre-release criticism (whether it was all an elaborate marketing ploy or not). One redesign, a sequel, and a Paramount+ spin-off series later, and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has become one of the most successful in the ongoing rise of video game adaptations.

There are multiple ways to consider the success of a movie. Whether in the quality of the storytelling, performances or direction, many subjective perspectives exist about the greatest movies of all time. For the Western genre, the greatest films artistically include classics like The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. However, when discussing the greatest westerns of all time, it's also important to discuss their overall financial success.
Many of the greatest quality films didn't actually make as much money at the box office as other films in their respective genres. The most successful westerns since 1994 depend on how well they performed with audiences, after adjusting for ticket price inflation. A few big names, like Django Unchained and True Grit, fall in this category, and they're also considered two of the best Westerns artistically. All box office statistics were sourced from The Numbers.

A new documentary about Martha Stewart has hit Netflix. The documentary tells the story of the once-successful businesswoman who spent time in prison for fraud. While Martha had a lot to do with the documentary, she is not happy with how it turned out. In a recent interview, she slammed the director.
Here is what she had to say about the new Netflix documentary.
Martha Stewart Bashes Her Netflix Documentary
There are lots of things in the documentary that paint her in an unflattering light, including her admission she cheated in her marriage. However, she has no problem with that since her interviews told the story. She is mad about how director R.J. Cutler pieced together the documentary.
Simply titled, Martha, the synopsis reads: “Told in her own words, this candid documentary charts the unstoppable rise, sudden fall, and hard-won comeback of lifestyle icon Martha Stewart.”

The standoff in the climactic showdown between Clint Eastwood, his scene stealer co-star Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach's characters in Sergio Leone's 1966 epic spaghetti Western masterpiece The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is arguably the most unforgettable in cinematic history. Blondie, Tuco, and Angel Eyes, the respective characters of the three legends, continue to live on in the hearts of fans over fifty years later. At the mention of the film, it's inevitable to picture their extreme close-ups, juxtaposed with long shots of the sweeping landscape of an eerie, circular graveyard. You'll remember how, for minutes, the tension escalated with Ennio Morricone's magical score in the background, without a word being spoken between the three. What may not be known to some is that the sprawling 5,000-capacity graveyard, Sad Hill Cemetery, was a set built from scratch by Spanish soldiers, commissioned by Sergio Leone. Located near Burgos,...

Kurt Russell's Tombstone is a classic Western movie, but there are also 10 reasons why people who don't like Westerns should give it a try. Tombstone follows Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) as he takes on a gang of outlaws in the Old West town of Tombstone in the Arizona Territory. Complete with revolvers, double-barrel shotguns, cowboy hats, horses, saloons, and more, Tombstone sounds like it is as Western as a movie can get. While it is a great example of the Western genre, it also holds quite a bit of appeal to people who aren't fans of cowboy stories.
There are plenty of reasons to not be a Western fan. From its slower pacing, its tendency to lean towards melodramatics, and its reputation as an "old" genre, Westerns aren't for everyone. There are, however, more reasons to be a fan of the genre. However, even for people who want nothing to do with Westerns,...

Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap has boarded Deepak Rauniyar’s “Pooja, Sir” as an executive producer, while Channel 4 has snapped up the film for the U.K. and Ireland.
The film debuted in the Venice Film Festival‘s Horizons strand competition earlier this year, and has subsequently played Hamburg and Busan, with the Mami Mumbai Film Festival up next. It is inspired by real events which took place in Southern Nepal during the 2015 race protests, involving the Madhesi community. In the film, when two boys are kidnapped in a border town in Nepal, Detective Inspector Pooja is sent from Kathmandu to solve the case. However, upon her arrival, the brewing political unrest and violent protests throw her off course, compelling her to seek help from Mamata, a local Madhesi policewoman. By putting aside systemic discrimination and pushing through everyday misogyny, the women attempt to solve the case.

The Man with No Name is one of Clint Eastwoods career-defining roles. The drifter and bounty hunter appears throughout Sergio Leones Dollars Trilogy, taking the nicknames "Joe," "Manco." and "Blondie." The character's adventures collect cash rewards, retrieve gold buried in Sad Hill Cemetery, bring peace to the town of San Miguel, and help eliminate the notorious outlaw El Indio. The hero also exhibits all the characteristics of a perfect Western movie protagonist. He has a quick draw, he doesn't talk much, he is independent, and is known for his moral ambiguity.
While The Man with no Name is great in A Fistful of Dollars and A Few Dollars More, he truly comes to life in The Good, the Bad & the Ugly, where he teams up with the bandit, Tuco (Eli Wallach), and navigates the chaos of the American Civil War to recover a cache of gold that is buried in an unmarked grave.

Sergio Leone is the man who introduced the world to the spaghetti Western and popularized it into one of the most successful cinematic genres of the '60s and '70s. The bloodier, bolder, and far more contentious cousin of the American Western made up most of Leone's filmography, and he used its inherent sense of style to create a series of mesmerizing scenes in each picture.
The older and more experienced Sergio Leone grew, the more operatic his choreography, editing, and framing choices became, resulting in some of the most memorable action scenes ever captured on film. It's true that Sergio never quite mastered dialogue scenes, but when you're a literal master of dreaming up pulse-pounding action sequences, sometimes it's a good idea to stick to what you do best. Here are the ten best scenes in Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns.

With the goal of making a big-screen Australian musical in the vein of movies like Muriel’s Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert that made such an impression on her growing up, Rebel Wilson has in many ways measured up to the delights that made those films modern classics in The Deb, which just had its world premiere at the closing night of the Toronto Film Festival.
Overshadowed in the past few weeks by a public dispute between Wilson and the film’s producers that nearly derailed this premiere, that kind of negative energy should not cloud what, for much of its two-hour running time, is a toe-tapping, dazzling, fun and young musical entertainment with an exceptional cast in the kind of showcase that makes future stars. Back in the day, crime dramas usually used to have corrupt cops. And even if the protagonist was a member of any law enforcement authority, they used to punch up instead of down. In case you’ve forgotten due to the Singham franchise’s recent trashy entries, the first one was actually about catching a corrupt politician, not doing the bidding of one. While movies like Ugly, Raman Raghav 2.0, Paan Singh Tomar, and Sonchiriya tried to show the real face of the law, films like Talaash, Mardaani (and its sequel), Raees, Dabangg (the entire trilogy), Murder Mubarak, Rautu ka Raaz, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, Delhi Crime, and even the highly revered Article 15 kept portraying the police as the bastion of justice and righteousness. That said, slowly but steadily, directors and writers are starting to realize again that maybe celebrating the khaki uniform isn’t a good idea because it has some real-life consequences.

Do you, by chance, remember when director McG made good movies? Yeah, I know, me neither. And his latest, Uglies, won’t disprove that point. It is hard to believe that the man who cut his teeth directing Sugar Ray music videos has successfully made movies for nearly a quarter of a century.
Yes, cinema is a visual medium, but McG has always focused more on aesthetics. From the Charlie’s Angels franchise to family fare like Rim of the World and Family Switch, he emphasizes vain visuals instead of character depth and a good story.
McG may have finally found a film that tackles those sensibilities with Netflix’s latest Joey King vehicle. Uglies is a grossly digitally enhanced, special effects-driven, inefficacious streaming film whose themes are so wide of the mark that it practically becomes conceited.

John Carpenter's 1981 sci-fi film "Escape from New York" has a novel premise: in the distant future of 1997, crime skyrocketed 400%. Instead of stopping crime in New York City, the government merely built walls around the island of Manhattan and transformed the whole burg into a massive prison. There are no cops on the inside, and only armed guards — and mined bridges — keep people inside. Anyone who commits a major crime is dropped into New York and forced to fend for themselves.
Naturally, Air Force One is shot down, and the President's escape pod lands inside New York Prison. The president (Donald Pleasance) is trapped! The dangerous, eyepatch-sporting criminal Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) was recently apprehended for robbery and is offered an ultimatum by the smarmy Police Commissioner (Lee Van Cleef). During a face-off with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), John confronts the mobster, telling him he should turn himself in by confessing to his crimes. Unfortunately for the FBI agent, Sonny had the upper hand, informing John that he made a mistake by going after his family, something the coffee importer/exporter had warned him about previously. In the end, Sonny shoots two bullets into John as the rain pours down over them.

Clint Eastwood is an icon of American cinema who initially gained universal fame for classic Westerns such as The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, For a Few Dollars More, and The Outlaw Josey Wales. Known for his rugged, bold characters, notably Sergio Leone's Man With No Name, Eastwood has successfully dominated the Western genre both in front and behind the camera as an Oscar-winning director, making him a staple in the timeless film genre.

Clint Eastwood's role in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly solidified his status as a Western genre icon. Lee Van Cleef's portrayal of the ruthless Angel Eyes added depth to the Spaghetti Western trilogy. Eli Wallach's comedic relief as Tuco balanced out the serious tone of the iconic film.

Having directed several acclaimed features throughout his decades-long stint as a director, one thing that sets him apart from other filmmakers is his calm and speedy approach.

Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap is returning to the children’s film genre with his latest production, “Little Thomas.”
The comedy-drama, which is the feature directing debut of Kaushal Oza, is slated for its world premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Iffm).
Starring Gulshan Devaiah and Rasika Duggal, alongside child actor Hridansh Parekh, “Little Thomas” marks Kashyap’s first foray into children’s cinema since his 2007 animated directorial venture “Return of Hanuman.”
Set in 1990s Goa, the film follows a seven-year-old boy’s attempts to reunite his quarreling parents in hopes of getting a baby brother. Kashyap, known for hard-hitting films like “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Ugly,” was drawn to Oza’s vision of creating a genuine children’s film from a kid’s perspective.
“It’s a difficult genre actually, to make an authentic children’s film,” Kashyap said. “So one has to ensure that it’s a good script before making it.

The inaccuracies in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly's gunfight do not diminish its quality or impact on audiences. The film's climactic gunfight is crucial to the story and character development, despite being historically inaccurate. The Western genre classic revitalized by the film's dramatic tension and iconic gunfight outweighs historical inaccuracies.
The Good, The Bad And The Ugly is one of Clint Eastwood's best movies, in large part because of a historically inaccurate scene. This film, which is the third in a trilogy about life in the Wild West during the Civil War, is widely considered to be one of the best Westerns ever made. It revolves around three gunslingers looking for treasure in the war-torn American Southwest. The meaning behind the title of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is far deeper than those being the nicknames of the three main characters, which adds to its depth.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly film explores complex character dynamics in a changing Western landscape. This was a low point in Hollywood when Americans, according to critic Christopher Frayling, were "bored with an exhausted Hollywood genre." (Archive.org) Something had to bring back those exhausted audiences and Leone was the filmmaker for the job, creating a grandiose, gunslinging masterpiece thats as much a satire of the genre as its indulgent in its conventions.
