Netflix releases a lot of original material — or "content," as they'd unfortunately call it — so it's very easy for things to get lost in the shuffle. If I'm being honest, I can also say a large percentage of these originals can be altogether forgettable and disposable. Which is why when something truly remarkable comes along, it's worth highlighting and propping up. All of this is to say that "Adolescence," a new limited series from the streamer, is not only worth watching, it's also one of the best originals Netflix has released so far.
Created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham (who also co-stars), "Adolescence" is a harrowing, disturbing, frequently heartbreaking story told with a unique hook: each of its four episodes unfolds in real-time, via one long unbroken take. While one of the episodes remains (mostly) rooted in one room, the rest freely travel about, which means the camera is constantly moving,...

Mickey Keating is a wide-eyed student of horror cinema. Each of his films is an homage to a subgenre, loaded with well-studied influences. Hitchcock, Carpenter, and others make stylistic cameos in films like Darling and Offseason, with his latest—Invader—giving us Keating's take on home invasions. It's a tight 68 minutes that echoes Funny Games, The Strangers, and even Adam Mason's Hangman, but in its stripped-raw approach, struggles to captivate as a blustery snapshot of a grander account.

Like last year’s infection freakout MadS, which you absolutely need to stream on Shudder, the upcoming horror movie Bury the Devil was reportedly shot in a single unbroken take.
Variety reports that Blue Finch Films has acquired worldwide sales rights to the recently wrapped Bury the Devil, which looks to put an immersive new spin on the exorcism movie.
The outlet details director Adam O’Brien’s film, “The supernatural-tinged home invasion tale centers on a nurse who discovers her latest patient may be harboring dark secrets.”
“This film depicts the most harrowing 90 minutes of our protagonist’s life, and I felt that the most visceral way to really feel this was to do a single-shot film,” O’Brien explains. “We are with her every step and mis-step she takes – through the unravelling of the mystery to the horror of her discovery. How Is It The End Of The Year Already? Time, y’all. Life’s proverbial hourglass turns over again, and with it comes another fresh batch of horror titles ready to rock our worlds. But! Before we start digging into 2025’s crop, Daily Dead has once again generously given me a space to highlight my favorite horror “things” of the year.
I’m going to stick with movies because while every year is a good year for horror movies (which I had to remind doubters yet again), 2024 was a Really good year for horror movies. In trying to whittle down a Top 10, I stared at double the amount of titles I thought deserved recognition. Therefore, I’m sticking to the screen — I need every single slot.

2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out, it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 18 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

The holidays are officially in full swing and that means a lot of folks are heading into some well-earned time off, and probably some long-overdue catchup on the biggest movies of the year. As we all know in 2024, trying to find out what’s streaming where is half the battle when you’re wondering what to watch.
Whether you’re looking for major box office hits like “Beetlejuice Beeltejuice” and “Inside Out 2” or lesser-known gems like “Thelma” and “The Bikeriders,” there are a ton of 2024 movies that you can watch on streaming over the holiday. Want to caught up with some awards contenders? “Conclave,” “Challengers” and “Emilia Perez” are all streaming now too, among others. Rather catch up on horror? “The Substance” is on Mubi and, naturally, Shudder has you covered with “Oddity,” “In a Violent Nature” and more.
Whatever you’re looking for, here are all the 2024 movies you can stream right now.

2024 has been a great year for horror fans, especially over on Shudder, where some of the most ambitious and original movies have debuted to widespread acclaim. It appears as if 2025 is going to be no different, as the streaming service has just acquired the rights to The Ugly Stepsister – a twisted fairy tale that puts a body horror spin on an old classic.
Written and directed by Norwegian filmmaker Emilie Blichfeldt (in her feature debut), The Ugly Stepsister stars Lea Myren, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, and Ane Dahl Torp, and follows the character of Elvira as she "prepares to earn the prince’s affection at any cost. In a kingdom where beauty is a brutal business, Elvira will compete with the beautiful and enchanting Agnes to become the belle of the ball." The search for the next James Bond has been running for quite some time now. Since Daniel Craig stepped off, fans have been patiently waiting for the next contender, waiting to see who will fill in the role. While they have been forbearing, they have not been quiet, putting forth more than a few candidates for the role based on who they think would be the best.

When it comes to playing an antagonist, very few can do it as well as Mads Mikkelsen. While some play such a character a few times in their career, he has been in the moral black and grey more than he has in the moral white. Having different shades of villain in every character he has played, Hannibal Lecter’s evil certainly does not match Le Chiffre’s evil.
Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy in Hannibal | NBC
While he has frequently been on the giving side of torment, there are the occasional films where Mikkelsen plays somewhat of a good character. The perfect example of this would be 2019’s Polar, where he played a retired assassin trying to outrun the grasp of his former employer.
Interestingly enough, the actor had another torture scene in this film, only this time he was on the receiving end.

Traditional horror movies with an easy-to-follow plot, relatable characters, and a healthy dose of scares are probably every horror fan’s comfort food. That’s because, when it comes to horror, the experimental and abstract genre pieces can be very hit or miss. In 2024 alone, I have come across In A Violent Nature, and I loved its take on the slasher subgenre. Bramayugam’s exploration of casteism and classism on a monochrome canvas was excellent. Oddity’s portrayal of revenge was haunting. And Outside’s use of the zombie subgenre to talk about the patriarchy was worthy of all the applause in the world. Then you have movies like Night Swim, The Devil’s Bath, Consumed, Baghead, The Hangman, Munjya, MadS, Mr. Crocket, and Don’t Move, which undoubtedly have a good concept at their core, but the execution is simply too muddled to be impactful. I am sad to say that...

David Moreau is no stranger to horror films, having made movies like The Eye and the iconic Them. However, in his new one-take horror movie, MadS takes the genre to the next level and delivers a classic story told in a totally new way. When a young man, high on a new drug, encounters a strange woman who takes her life in his car, he becomes increasingly more paranoid and acts strangely, kickstarting a chain of events that keep the audiences guessing what is and isn't real until the very end.
Cbr sat down with David Moreau and explored his reasoning behind taking on such an ambitious task of filming a movie in one take. He also talks about one of the most exciting moments from filming as well as whether or not audiences can expect Moreau to return to...

It does not take much time to see what director David Moreau intends to do with his maddeningly zesty zombie thriller “MadS.” The film, released on Shudder, provides a detailed exploration of a viral outbreak, from the eyes of the patient zero. It is relentless when it comes to escalating the situation, and quite cool when it comes to depicting it. Moreau’s one-take experiment in the film elevates the nauseating tension as the camera only leaves one despicable situation for a more deteriorating one.
The opening title scene where our drugged-up protagonist, Romain (Milton Riche), drives a sports car toward, and later through, the letters “Mads,” establishes the visual style that director Moreau has in his mind. As the camera continues to follow Romain through his nightmarish ordeal, it becomes apparent Moreau has opted for one of filmmaking’s notorious but engrossing gimmicks. The zombie movie isn't dead, but it certainly feels like its been shuffling on its last legs for the last few years. George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" didn't quite create the zombie movie, but it more or less solidified the ideas and tropes we now associate with it. There were many zombie movies in the years following the 1968 release of "Night of the Living Dead," some of them directed by Romero himself. But at some point, zombie horror became ubiquitous and overdone. If I had to pinpoint the start of this oversaturation, it was probably the combination of Danny Boyle's low-fi zombie flick "28 Days Later" in 2002, Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead" remake and Edgar Wright's comedy "Shaun of the Dead," both released in 2004, and the 2010 premiere of "The Walking Dead." In the wake of these particular titles, it suddenly felt like zombies were everywhere.

“MadS” is a French horror movie written and directed by David Moreau starring Milton Riche, Laurie Pavy, and Lucille Guillaume.
French horror cinema, though not frequently ventured into, has a reputation for delivering extreme, violent, and disheartening experiences. “MadS” fits this mold perfectly, presenting the terrifying effects of drugs in their most horrific form. Directed by David Moreau, this film takes us on a journey through the subconscious, navigating a night filled with madness and terror. While it may not be entirely original, it succeeds in creating the atmosphere and tension necessary to bring the film to its dramatic peak.
Plot
The story follows Romain, who consumes a new hallucinogenic drug. After hitting a woman on the road, his life and that of his girlfriend spiral into chaos, leading them through a nightmarish night of insanity.

Plot: A teenager who stops off to see his dealer to test a new drug before heading off for a night of partying. On the way home, he picks up an injured woman and the night takes a surreal turn.
Review: The gimmick of the one-take scene has gotten pretty out of control in recent years with varied success. Netflix’s Extraction action series utilizes various techniques to accomplish long, seemingly unbroken takes. And with the many setups that action movies require, the unbroken takes are all the more impressive. But it’s been diminished as less and less effort is made towards execution. Often digitally stitched together, the one-take-shot no longer has that same sense of wonder it did when Henry Hill walked through the back of the restaurant and finally reached his table. But if there’s anyone that can make something interesting again: it’s the French.

The following contains spoilers for MadS. Proceed with caution.
Sometimes, the best and worst thing about horror movies is that certain gimmicks are so often rehashed for an easy scare. Whether it's the timeless jumpscare or bleak endings where the survivors were never destined to survive in the first place, certain conventions made the genre predictable. But when it comes to storytelling techniques, one-shot horror films are few and far between but seem to always push the envelope in unique ways. This is exactly the case with David Moreau's MadS, which tells a story that feels both familiar yet brand new while proving that something as medium-defying as a one-shot movie is exactly what horror needs right now.

David Moreau’s ‘MadS’ is a fever dream of a film that feels like a cross between Sebastian Schipper’s ‘Victoria’ and Gasper Noe’s ‘Climax’. It’s a one-shot horror thriller that follows an intoxicating yet ridiculously terrifying journey of a few individuals on a night in a French city. Throughout its duration, it feels like a relentless attack on all your senses following characters as they fall into inescapable, frightening situations. After making waves in this year’s Fantastic Fest 2024, it is now streaming on Shudder. It stars Lucille Guillaume, Milton Riche, Laurie Pavy, and Lewkowski Yovel in the central roles.

Out today on Shudder is MadS, an intense new horror movie from director/writer David Moreau (Them) that tranforms a night of carefree partying into a harrowing nightmare that plays out in real-time. An exclusive new clip below highlights just how intense things will become.
In MadS, “Eighteen year old Romain has just graduated and makes a stop at his dealer’s place to try a new pill. As he heads off to a party, he sees an injured woman on the side of the road and decides to help her, but when she gets in his car, she suddenly smashes her own head against the dashboard, bleeding out until she dies. Is this a bad trip? Or is it something else? One thing is for sure, it’s only the beginning of the night.”

Throughout the runtime of MadS, I could feel the constant tension in my body, and that goes to show that the film does a pretty good job when it comes to horror. MadS, to describe briefly, is an hour and a half of complete insanity where nothing is what it seems. The sound design is intelligent and impactful, the execution of the one-shot is seamless and intriguing, and it creates tension that builds up to a feeling of constant panic. The visuals are mostly blurry, absurd, and shocking. MadS is definitely worth a watch, but the ending left me a little disappointed. I wished the element of absurdity continued till the very end instead of concluding on a realistic note. But regardless, MadS was quite an experience.

This review mentions suicide.
It's hard to say where the hidden cuts are in MadS, David Moreau's latest horror movie that unfolds in one take. The film wastes no time getting into the meat of the action and does more with its low budget than some of the biggest blockbuster horrors have achieved in the past few years. Both an outbreak flick and a fast zombie movie, MadS thrives with its tight and bloody runtime, at just under 90 minutes. Any longer or shorter, and MadS might drag or miss its sweet spot, but the film is too well crafted to make that mistake.

Its been seven long years since Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice gave us the sequel to their critically acclaimed 2014 found-footage film Creep, but the duo are finally back together to deliver The Creep Tapes, a six-episode anthology series that delves even deeper into the unhinged mind of Josef. Set to debut exclusively on Shudder and AMC+, the show sees Duplass reprise his role from the films, luring six new videographers into filming his deranged actions. Each entry will tell a different tale to expand the franchise lore even further, with the first two episodes premiering on November 15, and the remaining four following weekly.
The new trailer released yesterday (seen below) previews what fans can expect from The Creep Tapes, and starts by showcasing the unsuspecting victims before cutting to Josef whose name is ever-changing and all the different personas he takes on over the course of the series. We get some close-up shots of Peachfuzz,...

Doing a scene in one take or making it look like a scene has been done in one uncut take is more difficult than it looks or sounds. So, you can only imagine what it must take to do an entire film that is either done in one shot or made to look like it is. Some of the most popular examples that come to mind are Gaspar Noe’s Irreversible, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman, Sam Mendes’ 1917, and James Nunn’s action extravaganzas, One Shot and One More Shot. Now, many have criticized that, given how the “invisible cuts” in these movies are pretty visible, the whole one shot gimmick feels like a distraction rather than an efficient way to give viewers an immersive experience. Well, that’s where films like Victoria, One Cut of the Dead, and Boiling Point come into play, as they have achieved the aforementioned...

Movie fans likely already have subscriptions to streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Those who love horror have to make room in the budget for Shudder. Beta testing for Shudder began in the summer of 2015, and back then there were only a handful of titles available to watch. Now, Shudder is more popular than ever with over 1 million subscribers as of 2023.
Shudder has become a household name not only because of its library of classic and foreign horror films but also for its original content. There were many incredible Shudder originals released in 2024, not limited to Oddity, In a Violent Nature, and Late Night with the Devil. Meanwhile, two other films, MadS and Azrael starring Samara Weaving, are due for release on the platform later this month. Some of these movies are stronger than others, but each is worthwhile viewing for any horror aficionado.

The problem with films shot in one take (or constructed to look as if they were) is that the filmmakers priority is often weighted towards technical and not narrative or character considerations. For every 1917, with a one-take appearance that provided no relief from the hell of World War I, or 2002s monumental Russian Ark, which introduced us to centuries of Russian history, theres Irrversible, Gaspar Nos reprehensible exercise in sexual violence, or 2011s Silent House, where Elizabeth Olsen played second fiddle to camerawork and a horror atmosphere.
Somewhere between those extremes we have the one-take (actually five takes stitched together) MadS, which has the additional burden of being directed by David Moreau, whose films tend to have more running time than story. That was certainly the case with his 2006 suspense film Ils (Them in French) and his young adult riff on M. Night Shyamalan, Seuls (Alone in French). Its also the case in MadS.

David Moreau’s directorial debut, MadS, wasted no time in pulling viewers into a state of unease. The 2024 French horror film begins on a warm summer evening as graduation celebrations are kicking into high gear. 18-year-old Romain stops by his dealer’s place seeking some party favors before joining the revelry. Little does he know that an encounter on the drive home will ignite a harrowing chain of events unfolding over the next traumatic hours in real-time.
Shot entirely in a continuous take, MadS immediately immerses the audience in Romain’s frazzled perspective. When a mysterious injured woman climbs into his car, her disturbing behavior leaves more questions than answers. As her condition deteriorates behind the wheel, it becomes clear something sinister is spreading. Romain’s blissful night out quickly devolves into a desperate fight for survival. Through it all, Moreau’s fluid camerawork keeps viewers constantly unsettled, never allowing...

Fans of the entertainment industry have been crushing on Mads Mikkelsen for a while now and recently, his admirers have only grown in number. The man may be inching towards sixty but he sure is aging like fine wine and we really, really, can’t peel our eyes away from his charm. Honestly, villains have never looked better.

Back in 2020, Mads Mikkelsen starred in the Danish film, Another Round, where he played the role of Martin, a high school teacher who along with his peers decided to test out an interesting theory in school. Now, it was recently revealed that an English-language remake of the film is all set to be made with Leonardo DiCaprio starring in it. Despite the original film being heavily awarded, Mads Mikkelsen has made it clear that he has no intention of being a part of the remake.

We first get a sign that trouble is afoot in the patch of suburban France where David Moreau’s MadS is set when a bandaged, mutilated woman (Sasha Rudakova) aggressively hops into 18-year-old Romain’s (Milton Riche) car after he pulls over to the side of the road. As Romain heads toward the nearest hospital, the woman, who’s unable to speak, is manic and paranoid, constantly looking behind her to see if she’s being followed.
Of course, Romain isn’t in the best state of mind himself, having just snorted a couple lines of a new party drug in preparation for a night out with friends to celebrate their recent high school graduation. As the woman becomes completely unhinged, wildly flailing about the speeding car and eventually stabbing herself in the neck multiple times, a transference seemingly occurs between her and Romain, though it’s difficult to tell...

Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Absolute Batman #1!DC promised darker, more hardcore versions of fan-favorite characters with the launch of their Darkseid-created Absolute Universe, and Batman is currently leading the charge in the comic publisher's effort to keep that promise. The Dark Knight has already broken his Dcu counterpart's iconic 'no gun' rule by shooting a former ally in the face, a move that has completely rewritten one of the Bat-Familys strongest and longest-standing bonds.
Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles' Absolute Batman #1 not only introduced the Bruce Wayne of the Absolute Universe but also featured appearances from several iconic Gotham characters, including Barbara Gordon, Jim Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, Waylon Jones, Martha and Thomas Wayne, Black Mask, and Joker, along with notable mentions of Oswald Cobblepot, Selina Kyle, Edward Nigma, and Harvey Dent.

Among the diverse genres in cinema, horror has carved out a unique space, captivating audiences with its ability to evoke fear and suspense. Over decades, various sub-genres have emerged, each bringing something fresh to the table. One such innovative approach is the one-take horror film, with MadS being the latest addition to it.

One of my favorite films of Fantastic Fest 2024 was this taut piece of single-take cinema from France. An already high teen visits his dealer hoping to score the latest designer drug. But before he can get to the , he picks up a panicked woman on the side of the road. The cinematic fever dream that follows is like falling into utter chaos. MadS may tell a familiar story but it does so with ferocious energy and style, making everything old horrific again. I can't elaborate much more than that as to plotting. Suffice to say this type of story will be familiar to almost anyone who hasn't been hiding out in a horde-proof bunker for the last ten years. Use of the single-take...

"Contamination complete." Shudder has unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror called Mads, also written as MadS. That title doesn't tell you much (the Romanian title translates to Nightmare Night) but this is an intense, kinetic new horror thriller. It's another one-long-take film, taking place with one shot that goes on non-stop through the entire 89 minute runtime. A teen goes to his dealers getting a wild new drug before a night of partying. When he picks up an injured woman on the way home, things take a bizarre and surreal turn. With Lewkowski Yovel, Laurie Pavy, Lucille Guillaume. The "choice to shoot this film in a single shot stems from the desire to make this hallucinatory journey as authentic as possible," they state. "Every scene, every emotion, is experienced in real-time, with no possibility of escape – an unparalleled plunge into this altered state of consciousness. [It] becomes much more than a technical feat.

Spend a night in Hell with MadS, a single-shot joyride across the night when everything descends into chaos in real-time. Written & directed by David Moreau, MadS follows Romain (Milton Riche), who’s just trying to celebrate his birthday and get a little f*cked up with his girlfriend Anais (played by Laurie Pavy, who absolutely steals the movie). It has the makings of a classic early summer blowout, until a stranger crashes into his life and sends the entire night into a downward spiral.
Romain is only 5 minutes away from his dealer’s house when a woman in bandages and hospital scrubs comes running out of the woods looking for help. Let’s call her: Patient Zero. With a couple of 8 Balls in his pocket, Romain isn’t exactly keen to call the police for help so keeps quite and agrees to take Patient Zero to the hospital in town.

Director David Moreau knows a thing or two about helming intense horror set over the course of a single evening; the filmmaker previously unnerved with the 2006 home invasion horror Ils (Them). His latest, MadS, takes it a step further with an energetic horror movie presented as a single continuous take tracking a night that spirals out of control for young partyers. As stylish as that gimmick can be, the single-take format can’t distract from the familiar outbreak horror trappings.

Director David Moreau returns to horror prominence after 2008s panned American remake of The Eye and 2017s young adult thriller Seuls. MadS, which premiered at this year's Fantastic Fest, is a continuous-shot nightmare, an apocalyptic adrenaline rush at blazing speeds. Moreau returns to his roots as the New French Extremity filmmaker who shocked the horror genre with 2006s Them (Ils in French), as he conquers the ungodly task of making us believe were watching an uninterrupted shoot. MadS was filmed in five takes over five days, but youd never be able to tell. Moreaus control over perpetual motion is a one-way descent into infection-spreading madness, highlighting tremendous performances as we observe the beginnings of humanitys end spread in real time.

Among the many themes in One Piece, the Wano and Whole Cake Island arcs focused a lot on the idea of family. These arcs validated the idea that family doesn't have to be blood related, but value can still be found in blood ties. However, several characters in Wano are related to each other. Often these relationships remain unknown or unacknowledged. Tama was a Kurozumi like Orochi. Zoro and Yasuie are distantly related through the Shimotsuki family. These relationships don't end up mattering to the story, and they aren't even revealed in the manga or anime.
When Franky's backstory was shown, his initial dislike of pirates was explained by his pirate parents abandoning him. As he's a member of the Straw Hat Crew, Franky's moved past the hangups in his backstory. He focused on embracing his chosen family through Tom's legacy. However, Franky may be among the characters with an unknown relative in Wano.
