The "Ip Man" movies represent some of the most fun you can have with the martial arts genre. The franchise is loosely based on the life of the actual Ip Man (or Yip Man), a Chinese martial arts grandmaster who specialized in the art of Wing Chun, and whose most famous student was Bruce Lee, the star of the incredible martial arts action film "Enter the Dragon." The main movies in the property are directed by Wilson Yip and star Donnie Yen as the titular character. Yen played Ip Man for more than a decade in-between giving us one of the best "Star Wars" characters ever in Chirrut Îmwe from "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," as well as one of the best fights in the "John Wick" films.

Over the course of four Ip Man movies, Donnie Yen's character faced off with a multitude of formidable challengers. Some were close to home, while others were foreigners skilled in forms of fighting unfamiliar to Master Ip. Whether it was his own reputation that was attracting attention or someone else forcing Ip's hand, he was constantly contending with fellow martial artists of varying skill levels and overcoming great challenges.
Some were beaten rather effortlessly, while others were strong enough to deliver some of the Ip Man franchise's best fights. The latter, of course, generally stand out as among the most talented fighters in the Ip Man movies. Interestingly, though, it would seem that the strongest out of all his opponents was not even a main antagonist or someone who was included in the climax of a film.

2024 sees Donnie Yen cementing his place as Hollywood's biggest martial arts action star. Yen's upcoming projects, including the John Wick spin-off and Ip Man 5, will solidify his status as a martial arts movie legend. Donnie Yen remains one of Hong Kong cinema's biggest stars, but his reach in Hollywood is still growing.
A legend in Hong Kong cinema, Donnie Yen has made his mark in Hollywood, but 2024 is set to take the martial artist and actor's career to new heights. In 1984, Yen landed his first starring role in the martial arts action flick Drunken Tai Chi. From there, he rose to fame in Hong Kong, eventually making his directorial debut with 1997's Legend of the Wolf. A few years later, he appeared in the Hollywood film Highlander: Endgame and, soon enough, played the antagonist in Jackie Chan's action comedy Shanghai Knights. Decades later, Donnie Yen is now the new Jackie Chan.

The Ip Man series features some of the best hand-to-hand action scenes in modern cinema. Ip Man faces a variety of opponents in different styles, showcasing his versatile skills. The best fight is between Ip Man and Master Hung in Ip Man 2, a legendary battle of skills.
The Ip Man series has some of the 21st century's best hand-to-hand action scenes, with their best fights standing out from almost anything else in modern cinema. The series focuses on Ip Man, a real-life Wang Chun Martial Arts Master. Played by Donnie Yen in the movies, Ip Man is a patient and kind man who nevertheless possesses the skills and will of a true warrior.
His greatest challenges range in combat style, all while Ip Man survives Japan's occupation of China in World War II, the efforts of corrupt foreign interests to abuse and mock Martial Arts, and the challenges of moving to the United States.

The former heavyweight boxing champion on Tuesday attended a press conference held in the Northern city of Turin with Italian producer Andrea Iervolino and writer Enrico Remmert to announce “Bunny-Man,” which will be entirely shot in Turin.
Iervolino, whose production credits include Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” Johnny Depp-starrer “Waiting for the Barbarians” and “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend,” is producing the film via his TaTaTu shingle.
“Bunny-Man” involves a multimillionaire superhero who strikes against evil forces in anonymity wearing a rabbit mask, according to a provided synopsis. He is driven by the desire to avenge his sister who committed suicide after suffering a violent act, images of which wound up on the internet.

Ip Man 5 can overcome this challenge by focusing on Ip Man's mortality and telling a heartfelt story of him training his son and living life to its fullest.

Martial arts movie stars often get typecast as either heroes or villains, but some are skilled at playing both roles, like Carter Wong and Max Zhang. Another example is Gary Daniels, known for his flexibility and kicking skills, who plays both heroes and villains in martial arts films. It's safe to assume that Donnie Yen's appearance in John Wick: Chapter 4 was the first time many had seen this amazing action star in motion. While his brawl with Keanu Reeves was a sight to behold, Yen has had a lengthy history in the action genre, pumping out stellar film after stellar film that not only shows off his martial arts prowess but also tells compelling stories on top of it. Arguably one of his most successful ventures is Ip Man, a series chronicling the life of the eponymous Wing Chun grandmaster who famously mentored the late Bruce Lee.
Now spanning over four entries over a decade, the announcement of another mainline Ip Man film both surprised and stunned some. While it'll be a while before we see Yen on the big screen again, there's no better time to invest yourself in the grandiose story of Ip Man.

To the shock of fans of the franchise, Ip Man 5 is officially in development. The question is...how? Not only did the last installment, Ip Man 4: The Finale, imply it was the final film by literally featuring the words "The Finale," but the movie also concludes with Master Ip (Donnie Yen) passing away from cancer. Despite this, it was announced at the Cannes International Film Festival and by series star Donnie Yen on Instagram that the story of Ip Kai-man, the Wing-Chun master who trained Bruce Lee, would continue with a fifth entry.

Ip Man 3 star Donnie Yen relives a frightening fight scene near miss when he was filming a brawl with Mike Tyson. The first film in the Ip Man franchise was released in 2008, introducing audiences to Yen's titular martial artist. The third film, which was released in 2015, follows Yen's character as he fights to defend a local school from a ruthless gang and a property developer named Frank (Tyson).
During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Yen recalls a time while filming an Ip Man 3 fight scene in which Tyson came dangerously close to actually punching him in the face. The Donnie Yen-starring action thriller “Raging Fire” will open in North American theaters on Aug. 13, its distributor Well Go USA Entertainment announced Friday.
The film is the final project of the late iconic Hong Kong film director Benny Chan, who passed away last summer. Chan was beloved for action films like “The White Storm” and Jackie Chan pictures like “New Police Story.”
“Raging Fire” will screen ahead of its broader theatrical outing on Aug. 9 as the Centerpiece film selection of the New York Asian Film Festival (Nyaff). Later this year, it will land on the martial arts streaming channel Hi-yah!, prior to its physical and digital release.
“We have been long-time champions of both the late director Benny Chan’s work and Donnie Yen,” said Nyaff executive director Samuel Jamier. “The Centerpiece presentation is the keystone event of Nyaff, representing the tone and unique spirit of our festival, which...

Donnie Yen recently appeared at the Shanghai International Film Festival masterclass and reminisced about his long and illustrious career. Donnie Yen also served as the ambassador for the festival's "Belt and Road Film Week" sidebar and showcased his latest film Raging Fire. The film is directed by Benny Chan, who unfortunately passed away last August after a bout with nasopharyngeal cancer. While in the masterclass, Yen recalled the real danger he felt while filming Ip Man 3 with former heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson.
The two of them starred together in the third film of the famous Ip Man franchise in 2016, with Yen reprising his role as the Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man. Tyson played a corrupt property developer who takes an interest in the school of Ip Man's son. Being a fan of Tyson himself and taking note of his reputation, Yen had to be very careful while filming...

Ip Man: Kung Fu Master is the latest film to portray the legendary grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu, Ip Man, the real life teacher of Bruce Lee who lived from 1983 to 1972. All the films have been heavily fictionalized, and the Ip Man film franchise is far from unified. There have been multiple actors, directors and filmmakers featuring Ip Man, and this new film is independent from all of those, although confusingly enough, it’s very connected.
The most prominent Ip Man franchise stars Donnie Yen. It began in 2008 with Ip Man and retained the same core team for four installments: directed by Wilson Yip, produced by Raymond Wong, and written by Edmond Wong.
Yip and Yen collaborated in some previous critically acclaimed martial arts films like Kill Zone (aka Spl: Sha Po Lang), Dragon Tiger Gate, and Flashpoint – all of which were well regarded for their high octane...

Former heavyweight champion of the world Mike Tyson is getting ready for his big comeback fight. Against a shark. Discovery has announced that Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef will help kick off the 2020 edition of Shark Week. While this may sound like a joke, the network has even released a brief teaser to prove that this is, in fact, very real.
The teaser shows Mike Tyson training on the beach. Running, punching surfboards in half and blowing up beach toys. We don't see any of the alleged man vs. shark action, but Tyson does look to be in fighting shape again. Some videos of the boxer training recently made the rounds online, which led to speculation that he may be getting ready for a comeback fight. Though it would have been hard to predict this. Tyson had this to say about it.

Flat-footed storytelling meets fleet-footed choreography and sumptuous production values in the untaxingly fun “Ip Man 4: The Finale,” the last installment of director Wilson Yip and producer-star Donnie Yen’s glossy mythmaking tetralogy about the famous Wing Chun master.
The insistent subtitle is there for a reason: everyone, Yen included, thought that “Ip Man 3” would be his last time donning Ip Man’s priestlike tunic. Then again, after “Ip Man 2,” still the best in the franchise, Yen was also reportedly reluctant to return. A little like the great, wise, noble sifu (“master-father”) he so convincingly embodies, Yen apparently only re-enters the fray when circumstances (read: box office) leave him no other option.
The problem, then, is how to sustain a story that had largely run out of arc by the bruising climax of the last film? The solution the regular team of screenwriters — Edmond Wong, Chan Tai-lee, Jil Leung,...

The latest star to speak out in support of the Hong Kong police force during continued mass anti-government protests that have swept through the city in recent weeks: newly minted live-action “Mulan” star Liu Yifei (also known as Crystal Liu). Variety reports that the Chinese-born actress recently shared “a Chinese propaganda post in support of the police crackdown on mass anti-government protests in Hong Kong,” a choice that has drawn ire from many, inspiring a call to #BoycottMulan.
Variety reports that on the “Twitter-like Weibo social media platform, where Liu has nearly 66 million followers,” the Disney star shared an “image from the Communist Party mouthpiece, the People’s Daily, that reads ‘I support the Hong Kong police; you can beat me up now’ in Chinese and ‘What a shame for Hong Kong’ below in English. China’s internet is thrilled by news that Marvel appears to be insisting on casting an ethnic Chinese actor as Shang-Chi in the master of kung fu’s own spinoff film and has begun scouting out candidates for the role.
Variety reporter Justin Kroll tweeted Sunday that Marvel is apparently “putting out test offers for a group of men in their 20s” for its “Shang-Chi” movie. He added that the studio has “been adamant to reps offering up their clients for the role” that candidates “have to be of Chinese ancestry,” with no other Asian ancestry accepted.
Twitter is blocked on China’s highly censored internet, but that hasn’t stopped the tweet from going viral in the mainland. Users have screen-grabbed it and spread it on China’s parallel Weibo platform, where the hashtag “Shang-Chi casting” has since been viewed 100 million times, and the hashtag “Marvel’s first Chinese...

With the massive popularity following “Train to Busan”, it seems inevitable that other Asian countries are keen to follow suit in offering their own take on the tired zombie genre which explains this current Hong Kong/China co-production. Not only is Alan Lo’s debut feature timed perfectly to coincide with that film’s success, but also finds that mixture of humanity and comedy as prime ingredients to exploit in this new zombie comedy offering.

Let’s also pretend Master Z and Ip Man 4 don’t exist for the time being ;) Ip Man 3 definitely washes out that bad taste of the prior film despite also having more boxing in it. I’m wondering if the film makers responded to the complaints from that movie and tried to fix them in this one? Let’s find out. Ip Man 3 opens up with a pandering cameo from a now older Bruce Lee who wants to study under the wing chun master. In an origin story that someone...

The cinematic odyssey of Ip Man — the real-life master of Wing Chun and, famously, instructor of Bruce Lee — continues with “Master Z: Ip Man Legacy.” But don’t expect Donnie Yen to show up in this installment and don’t expect much in the way of historical fealty, narrative plausibility or serious examinations about human dignity or the ethics of kung fu.
Expect, instead, a spin-off about Ip Man’s rival from “Ip Man 3,” Cheung Tin Chi. After his secret defeat at the hands of Ip Man, Cheung Tin Chi became a mercenary — so briefly that it barely impacts the story. After retiring, he sets up a tiny grocery and tries to raise his son in peace, but a chance encounter with opium dealers leads to one giant fight sequence after another.
The story of “Master Z” is frustratingly muddled, and Cheung Tin Chi has very little to do with it.

Top-class fighting and fabulous production design overcome the stale plot of “Master Z: Ip Man Legacy,” a 1960s-set spin-off from the hit trilogy about the legendary Wing Chun master who trained Bruce Lee. With Max Zhang stepping capably into the spotlight as a former Ip Man challenger who wants to live peacefully but can’t avoid trouble, “Master Z” is professionally executed by veteran action director-choreographer Yuen Woo-ping (“Kill Bill”) and given a star-power lift by the casting of Michelle Yeoh and “Guardians of the Galaxy” team member Dave Bautista in villain roles. This expansion of the Ip Man Universe performed credibly in China and Hong Kong in early 2019 and has the required combination of grunt and gloss to repeat the feat when it opens April 12 on U.S. screens.
