Rick and Morty is inspired from a parody short of Back to The Future created by Justin Roiland called "The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti." The designs and voices of the parody versions of Doc and Marty would become the inspiration for the creation of the titular characters, Rick and Morty, although some changes were made to make them more original characters.
"Creators of the adult cartoon Rick and Morty (2013 ) are not shy about the influences on their show, giving interviews to IGN and Vulture. While the influences may not be secret, their range is vast, including childrens and adults movies and TV shows from the '70s, '80s, and '90s, a science fiction novel, and their mothers." For instance, they are heavily influenced by Doctor Who and Star Trek, as said in various interviews.
Jerry (the dad) is unemployed, but previously worked in advertising. Beth (the mom) is a veterinarian who specializes in heart surgery on horses.
Grandpa Rick is Beth's father. Her mother, Rick's ex, is deceased.
