'Dodgeball 2' Gets Gigantic Update From Vince Vaughn Over 20 Years After Release
Image
Thank you, Chuck Norris! After 21 years, it might finally be time for Dodgeball 2 to hit the court for the next American Dodgeball Association of America championship. Peter Lafleur himself, Vince Vaughn, appears ready to lead Average Joe's Gym to another championship, as the actor recently gave Dodgeball 2 its biggest update yet. Released in 2004, Dodgeball, also starring Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor, is widely considered to be one of the best comedies of that decade, up there with Superbad, Anchorman, and Tropic Thunder. Fans have desperately awaited good news surrounding the long-gestating sequel, and it seems as though it might finally happen.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote his new Netflix movie, Nonnas, Vince Vaughn revealed that he still knows the 5 D's of dodgeball. "There’s always talk of these," Vaughn said of the prospect of sequels to many of his beloved comedies. The actor...

'You Get These Rules': Vince Vaughn Explains Why Hollywood Stopped Making R-Rated Comedies
Image
Vince Vaughn was once one of Hollywood's go-to actors for the R-rated comedy genre, appearing in classics like Wedding Crashers, Old School, and Swingers. Speaking with Sean Evans on Hot Ones, the actor offered his thoughts on why Hollywood has shifted away from making R-rated comedies.

Appearing on Hot Ones (via Deadline) to promote his Apple TV+ series Bad Monkey, Vaughn explained that Hollywood is an industry that favors IPs over original ideas. "They just overthink it," he said. "And its like, its crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are messed up, instead of 90 degrees. So there became some idea or concept, like, they would say something like, 'You have to have an IP.'"

Why 20th Century Studios Hesitated To Cast Justin Long In Dodgeball
Image
Rawson Marshall Thurber's "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" lived up to its title when it hit theaters on June 18, 2004. It had been a fairly meh summer up to this point. "Shrek 2" was a smash, and the Alfonso Cuaron-directed "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" was the first truly good and aesthetically distinctive film in that series, but most of the heavy hitters were, at best, interesting misfires. When word got out from critics that Steven Spielberg would be adding to the disappointment parade with "The Terminal," it looked like a full-on bummer summer was in the offing.

No one was expecting much from a comedy built around a popular playground pastime, but "Dodgeball" was an uproarious slapdash lark that opened to an unexpected $30 million at the domestic box office. Ben Stiller had been a proven commercial commodity since the Farrelly Brothers' surprise 1998 smash "There's Something About Mary,...

Chuck Norris Would 'Absolutely' Make a Sidekicks Sequel
Image
After more than three decades, Chuck Norris remains open to doing a sequel to Sidekicks. Directed by Aaron Norris and written by Lou Illar and Galen Thompson, Sidekicks starred late actor Jonathan Brandis as a bullied child named Barry who dreams of being the sidekick of his favorite action movie star, Chuck Norris. In the daydream sequences, Norris plays himself, serving as a mental mentor for the young hero. Barry eventually sees his dreams come true when he teams up with Norris and actually becomes the Delta Force star's sidekick.

The end of Sidekicks teases that the story could continue with new fans of Norris similarly dreaming to team up with the actor and martial artist. As Norris remains popular with fans more than three decades later, doing a sequel with a new young actor isn't outside the realm of possibility. Better yet, Norris has confirmed that he's happy to return for a potential sequel,...

Dodgeball 2 Has Everybody Excited - Even Chuck Norris Has Said He Wants To Return
Image
Action movie star Chuck Norris addresses whether he'll once more join the American Dodgeball Association of America in a cameo for the upcoming Dodgeball 2. The in-development sequel is a continuation of the 2004 sports comedy Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, which saw Vince Vaughn's humble small-time gym owner bring together a group of misfits to face Ben Stiller's egotistical gym mogul in a high-stakes dodgeball tournament to save his beloved business. Dodgeball featured a number of recognizable cameos alongside Norris, with surprising actors playing themselves and characters within the film.

As reported by ComicBook.com, Norris addressed whether he will appear in the recently announced Dodgeball 2 to continue his surprisingly impactful cameo role. In the 2004 film, Norris plays himself as a member of the Adaa's judging committee in the film's final match, where he gives the deciding vote to reinstate Peter Lafleur's (Vaughn) underdog team Average Joe's following their forfeit of the game,...

Chuck Norris Up To Return For Another Cameo in Dodgeball 2
Image
It has taken a long time for Dodgeball 2 to get off the ground, but it now looks like Vince Vaughn and co are returning for a long awaited sequel to the 2004 comedy. While there is still a long way to go before the movie even starts filming, speculation about who may or may not be back for a second game is underway, and one name that has previously cropped up is the one and only Chuck Norris.

As well as being the stuff of internet meme legend, Chuck Norris also made a cameo appearance in the original sports comedy, and it seems he would be more than willing to do it all over again in the sequel. During his recent appearance at Nashville Comic Con, the action here was asked about the possibility of joining the new movie, he said:

"I haven't gotten a call about it yet, but...

Is The Internship Based on a True Story?
Image
The Internship, a lighthearted comedy starring Vince Vaughn (who also co-writes) and Owen Wilson, sees the two well-versed comic actors reunite as two recently unemployed men who apply — and are successfully accepted into an internship with tech firm Google. Released in 2013, the movie itself is a lightweight so-so venture that at best is a fun enough fish-out-of-water comedy — and at worst a feature-length advert for Google and its product.

What is a lifetime in the world of tech, 2013's proposition of an internship at a tech giant like Google was a tantalizing reveal behind the curtain that most had just used as a search engine asking mundane everyday questions like "How to make banana bread?" To give audiences a look under the hood of the then 133 billion dollar company packaged in a happy-go-lucky comedy mold, starring two of America's best and proven comic actors felt like a wonderful treat. Dodgeball 2 and The Dangerous Trend of Comedy Sequels Made 20 Years Later
Image
Dodgeball 2 is officially in production. Dodgeball, now a gold standard in dumb American comedies, is more than deserving of a sequel for sure — back in the early 2000s when it was actually popular. But does it really need a follow-up now? To put that into context, since then we have had two terms with the first Black president, superheroes have dominated box offices consistently, David Bowie died, and US troops finally withdrew forces from Afghanistan.

Dodgeball, starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, focused on a struggling gym that takes part in a dodgeball tournament to win a grand prize and save their business. Rude and ridiculous, Dodgeball remains fantastically funny and if nothing else would popularize the adage that, yes, if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.

The movie, however, was released all the way back in 2004. Making the first Dodgeball 19 years old, and by...

Dodgeball 2 Can Bring Back The Original Movie’s Joke Alternate Ending
Image
While the original Dodgeball has had a joke alternate ending floating around for years, Dodgeball 2 could actually use it. During the creative process of telling a story, there’s always the potential for many different endings, some of which seem opposed yet remain a possibility right up until the final days of post-production. In some cases, the alternate endings might even turn out better than the one that is chosen for the movie, or become an enduring part of the film through fan interest or trivia. Dodgeball’s alternate ending, however, went farther than anticipated and could inspire the second film.

Dodgeball is a 2004 comedy film starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn that tells the story of an underdog dodgeball team, the Average Joe’s, that enters a tournament in Las Vegas to win enough money to save their cherished, yet dilapidated, local gym. In the original film, the...

Empire Podcast #562: Jim Broadbent & Penelope Wilton, David Lowery
Image
If this week's episode of the Empire Podcast seems even more incoherent than usual, that's because it was recorded very early in the morning. Mind you, that doesn't explain why Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and James Dyer are incoherent at the best of times, but we digress.

In this episode, our intrepid trio tackle a listener question about Dodgeball 2 and end up answering a completely different Q; discuss the week's movie news, including almost everything that emerged from CinemaCon; and review Peter Pan And Wendy, Polite Society, and The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry. Chris also has lovely chats with the stars of that movie, Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton, and David Lowery, director of Peter Pan And Wendy, who reveals his love of Event Horizon. Do you see? Yes, we see. Enjoy.

Vince Vaughn Returning For A ‘Dodgeball’ Sequel At 20th Century
Image
20th Century Studios is cooking up a sequel to 2004’s “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” with original star Vince Vaughn now attached to reprise his role of Pete Lafleur, the very laid-back and casual owner of Average Joe’s Gym. Deadline reports that the studio has assigned writer Jordan VanDina (“The Binge“) to pen a script for the sports comedy sequel.

Dodgeball 2 In Development With Vince Vaughn Returning
Image
Dodgeball 2 is in the works with the original film's star, Vince Vaughn, set to return to his classic role as Pete Lafleur. The original film, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story was released in 2004 and was very well-received both critically and commercially. The story, which also features a mustachioed Ben Stiller as the antagonist White Goodman, follows a group of misfits who enter a dodgeball tournament in the hopes of winning $50,000 to save their beloved local gym.

According to Deadline, the Dodgeball sequel has entered the development stage at 20th Century Studios, which also produced the original. Vaughn has also been confirmed to reprise his starring role and will likely work on the project as a producer. The movie is expected to continue the story of Lafleur, who ended the last film by winning the dodgeball tournament and using the prize money to keep his gym open.

Dodgeball 2 Is Officially Underway At 20th Century Studios, Vince Vaughn Returning
Image
It's finally happening: "Dodgeball: A True Underdog" is getting a sequel and, what's more, Vince Vaughn will be returning as Peter La Fleur. The original comedy came out nearly 20 years ago back in 2004 and was a big hit in its day. Naturally, there was lots of talk of a sequel that never actually materialized. Now though, Vaughn has committed to the film and it is in development at 20th Century Studios, with a new writer on board.

According to Deadline, Vaughn will star in and possibly produce the sequel, which does not yet have an official title. Jordan VanDina ("The Binge") has been tapped to pen the screenplay, working from an idea that Vaughn cooked up himself. It is described as being in "early" development, so there's no word yet on a director or plot details. Rawson Marshall Thurber, of "Red Notice" and "We're the Millers" fame, wrote and directed the original film.

Why Dodgeball 2 Will Never Happen
Dodgeball 2 will probably never happen. Long before director Rawson Marshall Thurber was making big blockbusters with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, such as this weekend's Skyscraper, he made a comedy called Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. The movie was released in 2004 and was quite successful. So why hasn't there been a sequel? Quite simply, Thurber has no interest in doing it.

The filmmaker has been making the press rounds promoting Skyscraper and he was asked about a Dodgeball sequel and why it never happened. Rawson Marshall Thurber makes it clear that he loves the fans and loves the movie, but he just doesn't feel he has any more story to tell. Here's what he had to say about it.

"I really appreciate how much people love that movie. It's near and dear to my heart, but I feel like I said everything I needed to say in one film."

139 movie sequels currently in the works
From Zoolander 2 to 23 Jump Street, with 100s in-between. Here's our rundown of the assorted movie sequels in the works...

Think Hollywood is bereft of original ideas? You just might after this. Here's our look at the assorted movie sequels currently in the works. Since we last did a list like this, we've dropped films that seem to have died a death - Wanted 2, Spring Breakers 2 - but we'll keep this rundown up to date over the coming month.

Without further ado...

23 Jump Street

Sony is pressing ahead with a third Jump Street movie, as well as a possible Jump Street vs Men In Black film, and a female-headlined spin-off. For 23 Jump Street specifically, Rodney Rothman is back and working on the script (he wrote the second one). It's unclear yet if Chris Miller and Phil Lord can find breathing space in their schedule to direct. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are both expected back,...

Watch Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson walk the runway at Paris Fashion Week
Derek Zoolander and Hansel are back, strutting their stuff not on screen but on the Valentino runway on Tuesday at Paris Fashion Week. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson made an appearance as their iconic 2001 characters at the event, subsequently announcing Zoolander 2 for release on February 12, 2016.

Pret-a-Reporter is reporting that the film is currently shooting in Rome and that Penelope Cruz is on board to appear in the sequel along with Will Ferrell returning and Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2) writing the screenplay.

The original Zoolander from 2001 has been something of a cult darling as Stiller has moved on to bigger and better things, but this will also be Stiller’s fifth feature film and his follow-up to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty from 2013. Stiller is also serving as producer on this film as well as two other major upcoming sequels, Space Jam 2 and Dodgeball 2.

Zoolander 2 Is Nearly On The Catwalk
Get practising your blue steel as Zoolander 2 is starting to gather some traction. Back in 2010 it was announced that Justin Theroux will sit in the directors chair and now, speaking to Vulture, Theroux says “We’ve got a script for the sequel, and we’ve just been in talks again. We’re trying to sharpen it and hone it and, actually, I don’t want to jinx anything, but it looks like it actually might be starting to get up and running.” From Ben Stiller’s perspective, it could be his next project as his acting calendar is empty after Night at the Museum: Secret Of The Tomb. However, the actor has a pretty full on producer schedule, producing Dodgeball 2 and Space Jam 2 over the next two years. And as big as the cult following behind Zoolander is, the original was released in 2001 and one has to wonder,...

Rawson Marshall Thurber: We're The Millers, Dodgeball 2
Interview Caroline Preece 21 Aug 2013 - 08:14

Dodgeball director Rawson Marshall Thurber chats to us about his new comedy We're The Millers, his Magnum P.I. script and more...

Director Rawson Marshall Thurber tasted the rare joy of overnight success with Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story back in 2004, and now he’s making his long-awaited return to comedy with ‘family’ road comedy We’re The Millers.

We spoke to him about getting a hit with his first film, the Magnum P.I. script sitting on the shelf and whether we’ll ever see a Dodgeball sequel.

What attracted you to the script first of all?

I thought it was a really funny script and those are rare enough. When I read it, I think I laughed about four times out loud and that just never happens. I thought it was a really clever take on an old idea – it’s a family road...
