The beloved “Star Wars” sequel “The Empire Strikes Back” is set to open this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival on April 24, with director George Lucas presenting the film for its 45th anniversary.
“’The Empire Strikes Back’ is like ‘The Godfather Part II.’ Yes, technically, they’re sequels, the second movie in a series. But they are so much more,” TCM’s primetime anchor Ben Mankiewicz said in a statement. “The first ‘Star Wars’ picture in 1977 ignited a new era in Hollywood and turned a generation of young people into passionate movie fans for life. Then, somehow, three years later, along comes ‘Empire,’ which might even be better. It’s a stunning accomplishment and surely stands one of the great achievements in the history of film.”
Additional titles that will screen at this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival include “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” “The Lady Eve,” “Cinderella,” “Apocalypse Now,...

The White Lotus star, Jason Isaacs is currently facing controversies for his bizarre “double standard” comment on his onscreen n*dity and his further attempt to backtrack his remarks. And suddenly, amid this chaotic time, we were reminded of when he refused to attack J.K. Rowling, following her remarks on the transgender community.

Previously in 2020, when J.K. Rowling came under fire for her outspoken remarks on transgender rights, most of her Harry Potter stars stood against her—but not Jason Isaacs. Claiming to have different opinions from Rowling, in regards to trans rights, Issacs then highlighted the author’s goodwill and simply refused to criticize her.

Jason Isaacs is speaking out to take back comments that he made in response to questions about his full frontal scene on The White Lotus.
In multiple interviews last week, the 61-year-old actor was asked if he was wearing a prosthetic during that scene or if he was showing his actual anatomy.
“I think it’s interesting that there’s a double standard for men,” Jason told CBS Mornings. “But when women are naked… nobody would dream of talking to her about her genitalia or her nipples or any of those things. So, its odd that there’s a double standard.”
Jason cited Mikey Madison in Anora and Margaret Qualley in The Substance as recent instances.
Now, Jason admits he regrets the comments he made.

Gwyneth Paltrow had to shoot “a lot” of sex scenes with co-star Timothée Chalamet on the set of the forthcoming ping-pong drama, “Marty Supreme” — and considering it was her first film role in years, it was also her first time working with an intimacy coordinator.
In a new cover profile interview with Vanity Fair, the Oscar-winning actress says that she did not know what an intimacy coordinator was when she started production, and that she and Chalamet agreed to wave theirs off.
“There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed … We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back,’” Paltrow recalled of the steamy production.
Reflecting on how the intimacy coordinator on “Marty Supreme” tried to rehearse one of the film’s sex scenes with her and Chalamet, Paltrow revealed, “I was like, ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked,...

2024 was the year that Sean Baker and his stories of America's overlooked and underprivileged finally got the spotlight they deserved. The director has consistently crafted empathetic and strikingly naturalistic movies based on the lives of marginalized figures ever since his first film, "Four Letter Words," was released in 2000. Mainstream success somewhat eluded him in the two decades that followed, but each of his projects helped raise his profile, with 2015's "Tangerine" in particular gaining notoriety for being shot entirely on an iPhone 5S. 2017's "The Florida Project" was an American neorealist masterpiece, while 2021's "Red Rocket" was yet another critical success, even if it didn't quite propel Baker into the mainstream consciousness.
But "Anora," Baker's high-stress screwball comedy, was easily one of the best movies of 2024 and it seems the Academy agreed, with the film winning Best Picture at the 2025 Oscars. Star Mikey Madison also gave the 2025 Oscars its most...

Outside of film business circles (and even sometimes in them), the acronym NATO refers to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the transnational military alliance between 32 countries committed to maintaining the post-wwii world order. But for that niche group of people who make a big deal of going to CinemaCon in Vegas every April, NATO is the National Association of Theatre Owners. But now no one needs to be confused.
NATO, the cinema trade group which represents movie theaters across the country, is changing its name to Cinema United, NATO…er…Cinema United president Michael O’Leary told the Associated Press on Tuesday. O’Leary, who took over the post in 2023 after former president John Fithian stepped down, said the trade group was in need of a rebrand and also conceded that getting phone calls about Ukraine was getting a little old.
The rebrand also comes with a new tagline: Moviegoing Is Our Mission.

This week saw a new film debut atop the box-office weekend as Novocaine debuted as the number one film of the weekend, pushing last week’s top film, Mickey 17 to second place by the slim margin of $1.19 million.
Paramount Pictures International saw its latest release, Novocaine, debut atop the box-office weekend top ten with a total of $8.7 million to show for its opening weekend. Director Sean Baker made an impassioned plea in support of the theatrical experience (and independent cinema) when he picked up four Academy Awards recently. And it’s fitting that his Best Picture-winning Anora has passed its biggest box office milestone on the same weekend as Joe Russo and Anthony Russo debuted their Netflix film The Electric State. Produced on a reported budget of $320 million, The Electric State is the antithesis of the kind of cinema that Baker stands for. He has declared that he’s an indie filmmaker for life, and that his follow-up to Anora will likely be an even smaller project.

Flash-forward to this year, and the screwball Stripperella comedy “Anora” unexpectedly repeated that coup, demonstrating once again that the industry is capable of looking beyond stereotypes where sex workers are concerned.
Now comes “Summer of 69,” a risqué coming-of-age movie that manages to be both retrograde and refreshing in its portrayal of an awkward Catholic school student (Sam Morelos) who hires an inspirational pole dancer (Chloe Fineman) to help boost her confidence in the “bedroom department.” It’s a throwback to decades of raunchy-sweet sex comedies, from “No Hard Feelings” to “The Girl Next Door,” while also being somewhat progressive in that this time, it’s a girl who’s taking charge.
The problem — and hardly an insignificant one — is that however funny...

Bill Maher returned to the topic of the Best Picture Oscar winner Anora on Friday’s Real Time with Bill Maher.
Last week, Maher posited that Sean Baker’s indie hit winning the big prize on Oscar night was helped by the Karla Sofía Gascón controversies that tainted her leading Oscar nominee Emilia Pérez.
This week on his HBO show, Maher held up Anora in a “New Rules” segment about “whores having a moment,” questioning when the term “sex worker community” became the norm, playing clips of both Mikey Madison and Baker thanking the group during their Oscar acceptance speeches.
Comparing the phrase to when the term “homeless” became “unhoused” and “illegal alien” became “undocumented migrant,” Maher said argued that the repositioning can be looked at as a detriment.
“You can get so caught up in the virtue signaling that you actually do harm to the cause, and using ‘sex...

It’s all about Sean Baker’s Anora in the air and we cannot help it! Meanwhile, discussions regarding his 2021 film Red Rocket have emerged and online users have accused the movie of normalizing grooming. As social media buzzes with discussions, it does make one wonder if these claims hold any truth, or if Baker is simply the latest victim of Hollywood’s cancel culture.

Recently, the internet has been abuzz with questions about Isaacs’ nude scene in The White Lotus. Questions like whether he really did get naked for the scene or was he wearing prosthetics are being asked rampantly by fans over social media. In a recent interview, instead of answering the said questions, Isaacs clapped back at the double standards of the film industry when it comes to male nudity.

The 75th Ace Eddie Awards recognized achievements in film and television editing on Friday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall. The ceremony, originally scheduled for January 18, was postponed due to wildfires in the Los Angeles area. The event shifted from a traditional red-carpet affair to a more casual gathering, with a portion of ticket sales contributing to wildfire relief efforts.
Juliette Welfling won Best Edited Feature Film (Drama) for Emilia Pérez, a musical crime thriller by Jacques Audiard. The film’s approach to blending musical elements with its narrative stood out among competitors like Conclave and Dune: Part Two. Wicked, edited by Myron Kerstein, won in the comedy category, prevailing over Sean Baker’s Anora, which had won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing earlier this month.

The Oscars have come and gone, bringing some amazing films, stunning red carpet looks, and unforgettable moments to audiences. The night of the Oscars was especially magical for the movie Anora, for being the Best Picture Winner in 2025. Sean Baker’s twisted retelling of the Cinderella story won the Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Director, and Best Actress, with Mikey Madison taking home the title of one of the youngest actors receiving the Oscar.

“Emilia Pérez,” “Wicked” and “The Wild Robot” were the top film winners at the 75th Ace Eddie Awards, which took place on Friday evening at UCLA’s Royce Hall, nearly two weeks after the Oscars and nearly two months after the Eddies’ original date of Jan. 18. The ceremony held by the American Cinema Editors was postponed in January due to the wildfires that raged through the L.A. metro area earlier this year.
Wins by Juliette Welfling for “Emilia Pérez” and Myron Kerstein for “Wicked” stood in contrast to the outcome at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, when Sean Baker won film editing for “Anora.” Last year, “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” won at the Eddies, and “Oppenheimer” went on to win the Oscar. Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” the embattled musical crime thriller about gender confirmation, was the surprise Feature Dramatic Editing winner, Friday night at the 75th annual Ace Eddie Awards (held at UCLA’s Royce Hall).
Besting such contenders as “Conclave” and “Dune: Part Two,” “Emilia Pérez” editor Juliette Welfling cut against the start and stop rhythms of traditional musicals with sequences that flowed naturally from dialogue to musical moments in this operatic fever dream, starring Best Supporting Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña and controversial Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón.
In addition, Jon M. Chu’s maximalist “Wicked” musical beat out Sean Baker’s Oscar-winning “Anora” in the comedy category. Editor Myron Kerstein excelled at handling the tonal shifts and blending different genres to explore the volatile friendship between Elphaba/the Wicked Witch (Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda/Glinda the Good Witch (Oscar-nominated Ariana Grande).

Unless you've been living under a rock (or part of a conclave), you'll know that Mikey Madison won the Oscar for Best Actress for her barnstorming and achingly vulnerable performance in Anora, the modern-day Cinderella-story dramedy from writer-director Sean Baker. Baker's film, which tells the story of a young sex worker from Brooklyn who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch, won five Academy Awards in total, a remarkable turn for a small, independent film concerning a topic that should only be broached with the greatest of sensitivities.

Jason Isaacs would rather you not ask about his penis in the new episode of The White Lotus. The actor said he thinks there’s a “double standard” in how the public discusses male and female nudity. In an interview with CBS Mornings, Isaacs addressed the conversation around his character’s body part being shown on TV, as he dodged anchor Gayle King’s question about the rumored use of a genital prosthetic for the scene.
“A lot of people are debating it. It’s all over the internet,” Isaacs said.

Jason Isaacs is not willing to talk about his genitalia, despite being asked about it in multiple interviews after his full frontal scene on The White Lotus.
The 61-year-old actor bared everything on the HBO series when his robe fell open in an episode four scene. Fans have questioned whether it was really him or if he was wearing a prosthetic, and his co-stars have confirmed the true answer.
Jason appeared on CBS Mornings and Good Day New York on Friday morning (March 14) in New York City to promote the show. He was asked about the scene in both interviews and he shut down the question both times.

Despite opening the show with three songs, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both went home without Oscars for their work in Wicked. Erivo had tough competition going up against Demi Moore's triumphant return in The Substance and the eventual winner, the incredible and transformative, Mikey Madison in Anora. Grande surprised audiences with how perfect she was as Galinda, but there was seemingly no stopping Zoe Saldaña winning every Best Supporting Actress Award for her work in Emelia Pérez. With the upcoming release of Wicked: For Good, there's some hope one or both women could not only be nominated again, but potentially even win. Lord of the Rings sweeping the Oscars for its third entry suggests the Academy likes to delay rewarding a movie until the franchise's final installment, but Oscar history has not been as kind to actors reprising their roles...

What’s going to be this year’s “Anora”? As the Cannes Film Festival rapidly approaches, that’s the question for artistic director Thierry Fremaux and movie buffs around the world.
A month before Cannes Film Festival’s press conference, the official selection is still very much a work in progress, with little reliable information filtering through about which movies have already been invited. In fact, as of Friday — despite the volume of splashy prediction stories — it appears that only three films have so far been given a golden ticket to compete in Cannes. Variety can reveal that one of them is Jim Jarmusch’s anticipated “Father Mother Sister Brother“ starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver and Tom Waits.
The last edition of the festival, which Fremaux had warned would be slightly weaker due to the impact of the double Hollywood strikes, proved to be anything but. Headlined by Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anora,...

The Current Debate connects the dots around a topic of the critical conversation.Anora.Remember Cord Jefferson’s plea at last year’s Oscars? Picking up his Best Adapted Screenplay award for American Fiction (2023), the director chided the industry for being “risk-averse,” and suggested that, “instead of making one $200 million movie,” producers should spread those resources to make room for more diverse and bolder voices. “Try making twenty $10 million movies,” he said, “or fifty $4 million movies.” Jefferson was of course alluding to Oppenheimer (2023), Christopher Nolan’s thunderous portrait of “father of the atomic bomb” J. Robert Oppenheimer, a $100-million Best Picture winner that racked up seven statuettes and nearly a billion dollars at the box office. A year later, a cursory glance at the list of 2025 Oscar winners might make you think the industry did, in fact, heed the call. It’s not that there were no big-budget films among...

‘Anora’ Will Dance Past One More Domestic Box Office Milestone This Weekend as Oscars Buzz Wears Off
Anora will look to pass one final box office milestone this weekend now nearly two weeks removed from its big night at the Oscars. Currently sitting at a $19.1 million domestic total, if Anora can perform this weekend similar to how it did last weekend, it will pass $20 million at the domestic box office, which will likely be its final major domestic milestone. The Best Picture-winning film has also added $28.1 million from international markets for a global total of $47.3 million, and while $50 million globally may not be completely out of reach, it will require a much greater push than $20 million domestically. Anora is one of the top five highest-grossing movies ever for Neon, recently passing Ferrari (Adam Driver).

With movie awards season over, and rumors that Adrian Brody’s Oscar acceptance speech is finally coming to an end, the year 2025 sees a surprising amount of faces coming straight back into the conversation. For one, Zoe Saldaña will be putting her Supporting Actress Oscar to good use on the publicity trail for one of the biggest tentpoles of the year: James Cameron’s Fire and Ash, the third in the Avatar series, in which she reprises her role as Na’vi princess Neytiri.
It doesn’t seem especially likely that lightning will strike twice for Saldaña, but the win will bring extra gravitas to the franchise, which secured four nominations (including Best Picture) last time. Fire and Ash hits cinemas in the middle of December, usually a risky strategy, awards-wise — think Wonka, Nosferatu and even A Complete Unknown — but Cameron has good form on this front, and, presumably for...

Ready for another spooky Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan? Well too bad! With “The Life of Chuck,” Flanagan is only bringing the feels. Sure, the specter of death looms large over the Tom Hiddleston-led drama — plus its interest in the otherworldly is clear — but the story forgoes King’s usual frights for a far more straightforward and sentimental tale of all the vital and divine components that make up a life.
In IndieWire’s review out of TIFF, where “The Life of Chuck” won the People’s Choice Award, critic Katie Rife wrote, “Structured around a verse from Walt Whitman’s ‘Song of Myself’ — ‘Do I contradict myself? The overwhelming number of sequels, reboots, and remakes in Hollywood has been the topic of much discourse these past few years. Viewers and critics complain about what is a perceived increase in continuations of pre-existing intellectual properties and a concurrent decrease in originality. Sequels have become culturally synonymous with a lower caliber of movies. The second installment of a franchise is a sure way to make popcorn money, but not a way to attract prestige. Thus, when it comes to the Academy Awards, the institution primarily associated with recognizing the highest echelon of film, there are not many sequels that can say they have competed for the show's top prize.
While technically 10 sequels have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, only two have ever won: The Godfather Part II in 1974 and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King in 2003. What exactly is it about sequels that makes them anti-Oscar bait,...

Film is so back. Shooting on Kodak film continues to be both a more popular choice among filmmakers and to gather more Oscar prestige. At this year’s Academy Awards Sean Baker’s Best Picture winner, “Anora,” was shot on 35mm by cinematographer Drew Daniels; Brady Corbet’s Best Cinematography winner, “The Brutalist,” was shot on 35mm VistaVision to great aplomb by Dp Lol Crawley; Walter Salles’ Best International Feature Film winner, “I’m Still Here,” was shot on both 35mm and S8mm by cinematographer Adrian Teijido; and the Best Live Action Short winner, “I’m Not a Robot,” was also shot on 35mm.
This year looks set to build on that success.
