Kevin Smith intended for the film to be rated PG-13, but it received an R, primarily due to jokes about masturbation. Unlike with many of his other films, he was not successful in getting the film to a lower rating.

Bri, Belly, and Burny are partially inspired by Kevin Smith (Bri) and his early childhood friends, Michael Bellicose (Belly) and Ernie O'Donnell (Burny). O'Donnell has had several cameo rolls in Smith's films, most significant being Rick Derris in Clerks (1994). Bellicose was the customer in Clerks (1994) buying diapers and spoke the line "In a row?" in response to the Dante character's famous line about his girlfriends 37 sexual exploits.
The belt that Astro Blaster is wearing is a modified WWE Championship as evident by the 7-sided center plate on the belt.
There is a movie poster on the wall as well as several mentions to a fictional movie Dental School. Dental School is also mentioned in Kevin Smith's debut movie Clerks.
