What’s going to be this year’s “Anora”? As the Cannes Film Festival rapidly approaches, that’s the question for artistic director Thierry Fremaux and movie buffs around the world.
A month before Cannes Film Festival’s press conference, the official selection is still very much a work in progress, with little reliable information filtering through about which movies have already been invited. In fact, as of Friday — despite the volume of splashy prediction stories — it appears that only three films have so far been given a golden ticket to compete in Cannes. Variety can reveal that one of them is Jim Jarmusch’s anticipated “Father Mother Sister Brother“ starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver and Tom Waits.
The last edition of the festival, which Fremaux had warned would be slightly weaker due to the impact of the double Hollywood strikes, proved to be anything but. Headlined by Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anora,...

Caroline Vignal’s It’s Raining Men follows Iris (Laure Calamy), a Parisian dentist whose stagnant marriage propels her into a whirlwind of app-driven dalliances, blending cheeky humor with poignant introspection.
The film’s premise—middle-aged desire clashing with marital complacency—echoes the French tradition of treating infidelity as a nuanced exploration of human complexity rather than a moral failing. Vignal situates this tale within a cultural landscape where Anglo-American audiences might demand judgment, yet here, the focus remains on Iris’s liberation.
The script nods to classics like Breathless in its breezy defiance of narrative rigidity, though Vignal swaps Godard’s frenetic jump cuts for lush, surreal detours, such as a spontaneous musical sequence set to the titular anthem.
This juxtaposition of grounded realism and whimsical escapism mirrors France’s ambivalence toward tradition and modernity—a tension as relevant in today’s #MeToo era as it was in the heyday of the Nouvelle Vague.

The most Oscar-nominated film this season is Emilia Pérez, which is entirely in Spanish. It landed 13 noms — smashing the record for a non-English-language film (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma had 10 each) and just one shy of the record for any film — including best picture. And it’s not the only non-English-language film up for the top Oscar; so, too, is the Portuguese-language I’m Still Here. Until recently, such a scenario would have been unimaginable. Then came Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite. This is the inside story of how that off-the-wall Korean film made history at the Oscars five years ago.

While the official lineup of films at the Cannes Film Festival taking place in May won’t be made public until mid-April, there are already some early rumblings of what projects we should expect to see on that list and there are plenty of reasons to get excited.
That group of potential entries as compiled by Deadline includes directorial debuts with Kristen Stewart‘s “The Chronology Of Water” (still a chance it might not be completed in time), and Scarlett Johansson‘s “Eleanor The Great.”

One of the projects we’ve been crowing about coming up on Netflix in 2025 is the streamer’s first-ever medical procedural series, Pulse. The series has had the lid lifted on it with an April 2025 release date set. Here are all those first looks and a recap of everything we know so far.
First announced publicly in March 2024 (although in development for at least a year before that), the series marks a first for Netflix, at least when it comes to its English-language programming. Although it’s licensed plenty of medical dramas over the years, it’s never made one itself—at least not a procedural.

Ethan Hunt could be hitting the Croisette.
Though no decision has been made, “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” is weighing a Cannes Film Festival bow, which could see Tom Cruise injecting some serious star power into the event. Paramount, which declined to comment for this article, will be releasing the movie in theaters on May 21, which falls during the second week of the festival. The film is intended to be Cruise’s last outing as the Imf spy.
Paramount has a rich history with the festival, and so does Cruise, whose last trip to Cannes — for “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022 — was a triumph. The movie went on to gross $1.45 billion at the worldwide box office and even garnered six Oscar nominations, winning a statuette for best sound.

Exclusive: With one of Europe’s three flagship film festivals approaching half way stage, minds are already beginning to focus on the shape of the next two: Cannes and Venice. The former will be upon us before we know it.
As ever, there is no shortage of anticipated movies in contention. Indeed, one leading producer we spoke to remarked that 2025 is looking like “a particularly tough year, a much stronger year than 2024”. The surprise to us during our research for this piece is just how many big movies look like they will push to fall rather than launch on the Croisette. That’s not to say that Cannes won’t be box office. It remains the gold standard. The importance of both Cannes and Venice as launchpads is at an all-time high. Just look at how many Oscar nominees now start out at those two festivals — five of this year...

In June last year, Netflix premiered its Spanish crime thriller Gangs of Galicia (also known in Spanish regions as Clanes), and after an over six-month wait, Netflix Es has confirmed that the show will be coming back for a second season.
If you missed it, the show was about a woman’s father who had been murdered, which subsequently reveals he had led a hidden double life. She seeks revenge and infiltrates a Galician drug cartel to become close to its leader.
The announcement of the renewal for Gangs of Galicia came as a relative footnote from the Next on Netflix event held in Madrid, where journalists and influencers tuned in for the US announcements in addition to showcasing what’s coming up in Spain over the next year such as Aitana: Metamorphosis, Carlos Alcaraz: My Way, A Ghost in Battle, Turn of the Tide season 2, and Olympo.

French New Wave fans, rejoice. One of Jean-Luc Godard’s most colorful, joyful, and unapologetically playful masterpieces of the 1960s has received a new 4K restoration. And New Yorkers will have the chance to catch it on the big screen this February.
Godard’s 1961 musical romantic comedy “A Woman Is a Woman” will screen at Film Forum in New York City from February 7-20, which will mark the U.S. premiere of the restoration.
Released in 1961, a year after the Cahiers du Cinema veteran secured himself filmmaking immortality with “Breathless,” “A Woman Is a Woman” was Godard’s tribute to Hollywood’s Technicolor musical comedies. Featuring the bright color scheme that he would return to for films like “Contempt” and “Pierrot Le Fou,” the film stars Godard’s then-wife and frequent collaborator Anna Karina as a dancer who, eager to have a child, entertains the romantic pursuits of two men...

Ringo always wanted to be a cowboy. He grew up in the toughest corner of Liverpool, dreaming of escaping to the Wild West, hoping to emigrate to Texas. There's some exciting news to share for fans of Netflix's hit Spanish medical drama series Breathless. According to a report from Spanish news source FormulaTV, Netflix has officially renewed Breathless for a second season, and the new episodes are already in the works!
Back in August 2024, Breathless (also know as Respira in its native Spanish) made its premiere on Netflix and spent over one month on the streamer's global top 10 charts. The show racked up 16.2 million views, which translates to over 103 million viewing hours, per What's on Netflix.
It's no surprise that Breathless won global audiences over, as the medical drama comes from Carlos Montero, the co-creator of Elite, and featured an excellent cast telling gripping stories. And based on the season finale's cliffhanger ending, a second season was definitely a need.

Physical media collectors, take note. The Criterion Collection has announced six new Blu-ray releases coming in February 2025, including titles from some of today’s most beloved auteurs and one famously elusive late-career work from a French New Wave legend.
The slate is headlined by Jean-Luc Godard’s “King Lear,” an essential work from the “Breathless” director’s experimental period that has long been unavailable to own or stream. The film uses William Shakespeare’s tragedy as a jumping off point for a postmodern riff on art in a world decimated by the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown. While it shares little DNA with the actual play that shares its name, “King Lear” contains some of the most striking imagery of Godard’s filmography, including the director himself donning a Rastafarian wig made entirely of electrical cables. The nonlinear film is a pastiche of influences, references, and ideas that stands out to many...

In the rendition, recorded live at BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, Beabadoobee recasts Carpenter’s acerbic pop-rock hit into something gentler, with a slightly countrified, acoustic-guitar-and-strings arrangement — almost how the Corrs would’ve done it. To underscore the point,...

Ringo Starr is returning to country music with his new album, Look Up, produced and co-written by T Bone Burnett. It will be released in full on January 10th, 2025, but the first preview, “Time on My Hands,” is out now. Stream it below.
Featuring 11 original songs, Look Up was recorded earlier this year in Nashville and Los Angeles. It was born out of Starr’s chance encounter with Burnett at a Los Angeles event in 2022, where Starr asked Burnett to write him a song for a project he was recording at the time. Burnett returned with nine songs steeped in country, creating the foundation for the album.
For his first country album since 1970’s Beaucoups of Blues, Starr also recruited Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves) and his frequent collaborator Bruce Sugar as co-producers. Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle each make multiple appearances on Look Up, which also features Alison Krauss, Lucius,...

Ringo Starr was always the most country of the Beatles, covering Buck Owens’ “Act Naturally” and professing his love of Kitty Wells, his favorite singer. Fifty-five years since he released the twangy country solo album Beaucoups of Blues in 1970, Starr will return to the genre with Look Up, a new album arriving Jan. 10, 2025. It’s a collection of 11 songs — many of them cowritten by T Bone Burnett, who produced the album — including the breakup ballad “Time on My Hands,” out today.

Bette Gordon in her home office. Photograph by the author. The problem that I have dealt with in my whole career is that I essentially am not an American filmmaker. That I am anything but.The first person to place a camera in Bette Gordon’s hands was her father, Kenneth. A photographer himself, he met Gordon’s mother at a mutual acquaintance’s wedding, where he discreetly swapped place cards in order to sit next to her. They would later welcome Bette into the world he had been vigilantly chronicling, and by the time she was twelve, he began to teach her how to look. He advised her to hold her breath when snapping a photograph, how to frame images, where to find beauty. Since these teachings, Gordon has built a career upon images of eroticism and crime, arranging them into stories of a repressed woman working the box office at a porn theater,...

San Sebastian – “Bound in Heaven,” the directorial debut of experienced screenwriter Xin Huo, best known for “Kung Fu Hustle,” is the sole Chinese production in the Official Selection at San Sebastián, following its world premiere in Toronto’s Centrepiece section. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Li Xiuwen, a Huading Award winner as part of the writing team for “Medal of the Republic.”
The story turns on Xia You (NiNi), a successful but emotionally drained woman trapped in a violently abusive relationship with her fiancé, played by Liao Fan, who won a Berlin Silver Bear for “Black Coal, Thin Ice.” In a harrowing early scene, Xia You defies her abuser, uttering the chilling and foreboding line, “Don’t smudge my makeup, the guests are still here,” a reflection of the fragile facade she is forced to uphold.

No one likes going to the doctor, but for some reason, a lot of us can't seem to get enough of watching fake doctors on TV. Medical drama series have been popular on the small screen for what feels like forever, and whether these procedurals are following the high-pressured jobs of doctors, nurses, paramedics, or any essential worker, there's an audience ready and waiting to tune in.
In August 2024, Netflix released its Spanish medical drama series Breathless (also known as Respira) from the creators of the now-ended teen thriller Elite. The series centers on a public hospital in Valencia that experiences changes when a public figure seeks treatment. Breathless stars Blanca Suárez, Manu Rios, Najwa Nimri, Alfonso Bassave, and more talented actors in the ensemble cast.
Like most medical drama series, Breathless doesn't solely focus on the heart-pounding and sometimes downright bone-chilling life-or-death situations that happen in a hospital. There's also romance,...

The 1958 version of “Bonjour Tristesse” is everything Hollywood seems to be wary of these days: a notoriously mean, allegedly misogynistic filmmaker’s interpretation of a book written by and about a French teenage girl. “He used me like a Kleenex and then threw me away,” Jean Seberg said of director Otto Preminger. Well, get out your hankies for a more sensitive (and plenty chic) take, one that asks: What might an adaptation of “Bonjour Tristesse” look like if it were a woman interpreting Françoise Sagan’s words? Better yet, how might it feel?

Netflix's latest foray into creating its own original medical drama arrived on Aug. 30 with the premiere of the exciting Spanish series Breathless, otherwise known as Respira. In the series from the creators of Elite, matters of public health come under fire when a high-profile patient receives treatment from a public hospital in Valenica.
While that's the throughline of the series, the doctors in Breathless also take a page from Grey's Anatomy and find some time for romance. The series balances both the steamy personal lives of its doctors with the fast-paced environment of the hospital emergency room, the life and death needs of their patients, and the political issues that quickly come into play.
If you're considering adding Breathless to your watch list and binge-watching all eight episodes, you probably want to know a little bit more information about what you're getting yourself into. As a medical drama, some blood is expected.

Spanish-language medical soap Breathless delivers pretty well on the melodramatic super-emotional front. It’s got a great cast that makes you feel like you’re in the room with them struggling to make sense of how to deal with the life-and-death situation at hand. But when it comes to shows like this, you can’t just give us 8 episodes and be done with it. Rather than a limited-edition trendy product, it’s more a luxurious silk that’ll last you a lifetime; quite literally. I mean, look at Grey’s Anatomy, still stronger than ever as an old woman. She’s a giver. But with that said, the end of Breathless leaves many plot lines unfinished. Two major factors include Jesica’s stabbing and Patricia’s massive decision, and then there’s things like Oscar’s overdose and the fate of the hospital as a whole. While nothing has been confirmed just yet,...

It’s been years since I last watched Grey’s Anatomy, even though it’s still making the rounds, like a doctor at retirement age forced to keep working well beyond their years. I think each country has its own medical drama equivalent. In India, we had Dil Mil Gaye back in the day, and there are a dozen Korean medical dramas, all pretty good and worth your time. And now, dare I say, we’ve found a Spanish one that’s just as dramatic, bloody, and maybe much more McSteamy than you’d expect. Breathless is your classic medical drama where a bunch of doctors at a hospital in the public health care system struggle to deal with emergency and terminal illnesses. But that’s not it, because after some point, that may become a bit too bleak for our interest. So, we have a series of love affairs, some internal back and forth,...

If you’re specifically looking for a Spanish-language version of Grey’s Anatomy, then look no further—Breathless is exactly what you need. This medical drama, set in the bustling Joaquin Sorolla Hospital in Valencia, brings all the intensity and emotion you’d expect from a show about doctors. Like its American counterpart, Breathless centers on the lives of the doctors, residents, and nurses who navigate the daily pressures of saving lives. But it’s not just about medicine—there’s plenty of romance, family drama, and personal conflicts brewing among the hospital staff. From steamy love affairs to the heartbreaking struggle of dealing with death, the relationships within the hospital are as complex and engaging as the medical cases they handle. I suppose the protagonist of the show, in many ways, is handsome Biel, and his clandestine love affair with Jesica takes center stage near the end of Breathless season 1. Additionally,...

The 2024 Spanish medical drama series on Netflix, Breathless, or Respira, is very much like other sensational drama shows produced by the platform, with the added backdrop of blue scrubs and bloody scalpels. The plot is centered around a public hospital in Valencia, named the Joaquin Sorolla Hospital, where overstressed surgeons and their resident doctors struggle to treat the queue of patients who rush to the place for treatment. However, such is the heightened drama in the characters’ personal lives, and also in the political world, that matters of medicine become secondary, and the various subplots are all that we follow. Overall, Breathless is mediocre at best and disappointing at times, and it is best watched without any expectations of a serious medical drama.
