Harrison Ford's first feature film was an uncredited role as a bellhop in the 1966 James Coburn crime thriller "Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round." He was 24. It's wild to think that Ford, when he was 80, also starred in the 2023 blockbuster "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," which was set in 1969. The elderly Indiana Jones, if he was a movie fan, could have seen the film debut of Harrison Ford.
Sylvester Stallone's first feature film came in 1969, when he was 23. He played an uncredited extra in a film called "The Square Root." Indeed, for the first three years of his career, Stallone mostly played uncredited roles, turning up in films like "What's Up, Doc?," "Bananas," and "Klute." Stallone doesn't have a career wraparound like Ford's above, but he was recently the subject of "Sly," a documentary about his career.

It's no secret that video game movies have been risky propositions for most of their history, though that's changed in more recent years with successful adaptations of big properties like Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog. But back in the mid-2010s, the genre was still mostly wildcards bending toward box office bombs. Unperturbed by this, Sony decided to get in on the business with a handful of movies adapting major PlayStation properties. Specifically, two hit action-platformer franchises from the PS2 era -- "Ratchet & Clank" and "Sly Cooper" -- were put in development as animated films.
The "Ratchet" adaptation was announced in 2013, and the "Sly" movie got a full teaser trailer a year later. Blockade Entertainment, animation studio Rainmaker Entertainment, and director Kevin Munroe and animation studio were attached to both. The projects even had some video game pedigree in the form of Blockade producer Brad Foxhoven, who previously worked...

The new documentary “Sly Lives, aka the Burden of Black Genius,” which focuses on the life and career of the brilliant but troubled musician Sly Stone and his group Sly and the Family Stone, is both a conventional documentary and an extremely unconventional one.
Like its predecessor, the Oscar and Grammy-winning “Summer of Soul” — which was also directed by the Roots’ Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and produced by Joseph Patel — “Sly Lives” works to incorporate the main story with a larger theme, in this case, as the subtitle indicates, the pressures that come with being both Black and a genius — pressures that have brought down more than one such genius and have led many of them toward self-destruction. That subtitle isn’t saying that geniuses aren’t created equally — but what happens after that genius manifests itself can be very different for minorities, particularly Black people.

Exclusive: Braden Aftergood has departed as partner at Sylvester Stallone’s Balboa Productions, sources tell Deadline. A replacement is expected to be named soon, I hear.
Stallone partnered with Aftergood in 2018 to launch Balboa Productions. The film and TV company, which initially had a multi-year pact with Starlight Culture Entertainment for feature development, has been under a first-look film and TV deal at Amazon MGM Studios since 2023.
Aftergood’s exit has come as a surprise to many as he has been actively working with Amazon on projects in development. Accounts as to why he has been let go vary. Some point to Aftergood’s work on a side movie project as a reason though I hear that film may have been carved out of his Balboa deal. Others claim that the partnership has run its course.
I hear Aftergood has retained an attorney, and his exit is being negotiated, including...

About an hour into Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s debut feature “Summer of Soul,” Sylvester Stewart (aka Sly Stone) and his interracial, mixed-gender band takes the stage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival and proceed to blow the crowd away. Questlove’s Oscar-winning documentary about the festival illustrated how the sonic diversity of the lineup was partly a microcosm for the big-tent nature of late-1960s Black consciousness. Gospel, blues, pop, R&b, and rock ‘n’ roll were all represented at the festival because Black culture was not, and never will be, a monolith. It’s a testament to Sly and the Family Stone’s musical power that they managed to stand out as a highlight from a foster filled with heavy hitters like Nina Simone and a young Stevie Wonder. There’s a reason that the film ends with their stirring performance of “I Want to Take You Higher.”

As a kid, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson would go to bed on Saturday nights at 8:30 p.m., but his parents were “cool enough” to wake him up to watch the musical performances on Saturday Night Live as well as Soul Train. So when he got the call from Lorne Michaels to direct a documentary of the musical side of the series celebrating 50 years, he was ready.
But he did more research. “I knew those episodes by heart,” says Questlove, who got the call in 2020 to work on Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music and was 4 years old when SNL launched in 1975. “I was trying to do the math in my head. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s 2020 and the anniversary is in 2025. If I can do about five to seven episodes daily, then maybe I can catch up to it.”

Warning: Major spoilers for Alarum below!Sylvester Stallone's latest action thriller Alarum came dangerously close to breaking his worst screen habits - then chickens out at the moment of truth. The latest Sylvester Stallone action movie features the screen legend in a supporting role as Chester, an arbiter (Aka assassin) sent to take out an Awol spy named Joe (Scott Eastwood). Sadly, Alarum doesn't quite break Stallone's recent disappointing action streak - though it is more fun than 2024's dour Armor.
Stallone's appearance in Alarum is very much an extended cameo, though he's such a pro he steals every scene regardless. It's also something of a villain role, with Chester preferring to kill using a slow-acting poison. He injects Joe with this poison around the midway mark, which gives Eastwood's character 60 minutes to finish the mission before his death. This adds a nice ticking clock element -...

Nostalgia baiting has become so common, it’s erupted into nano-genres all its own. Take documentary filmmaking. Where once there were arguments over what was left out, what was put in, and what constituted unbiased storytelling, now the landscape is dominated by celebrity self-profiles where viewers can consider themselves lucky if the subject of the (puff) piece isn’t also a producer with final cut. What do “Beckham,” “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” and “Sly” have to do with nostalgia? Typically, to get famous enough to merit your own “documentary,” you need a body of work that people already love — hence, even series like “The Last Dance” or films like “Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces” traffic in nostalgia, tempting viewers to revisit the glory days of such-and-such or so-and-so via interviews with the talking heads of today.

Brad Pitt didn’t hold back, and surprisingly, it wasn’t Sylvester Stallone he blamed for Hollywood’s obsession with ripped bodies. While most people credited (or blamed) Sly for turning actors into gym rats, Pitt pointed fingers in a totally unexpected direction.

Warning: Major spoilers for Armor below!Sylvester Stallone's action thriller Armor sits at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and again shows his failure to break one of his strangest rules. Another element that makes this Sylvester Stallone action movie unique is that it's one of the rare times he's played a villain, as the thriller makes it clear Sly's "Rook" is willing to kill the guards trapped inside the armored truck he's trying to break into. Despite a fun hook, Armor has a dismal 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which with complaints about everything from the stock characters to the terrible CGI.

Its bad news for Sylvester Stallone fans who were hoping to see him pop up in Cliffhanger 2, as Variety reports that Sly is now out, and Pierce Brosnan and Lily James are in. After Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King has been the next big hit for Paramount, which isn’t surprising given the star power of Sylvester Stallone. But while the Stallone-led series has succeeded in rivaling the Western drama’s numbers, tonally, the two couldn’t be more different, as the mob drama doesn’t shy away from touching more absurd territories with its comedy.
However, compared to the first season, there is a noticeable step down in the writing department in the new addition, as certain storylines in the show further add to the idiocracy of its supporting cast.

Sylvester Stallone's upcoming thriller Armor could finally break a bad cinematic habit the actor has stuck to for 46 years. Following the shock success of Rocky in 1976, Stallone was touted as the successor to actors like Marlon Brando. Unfortunately, many of his non-Rocky follow-ups were duds, and the success of First Blood saw the star become typecast in the action genre. Decades later, Sylvester Stallone's action movies are a subgenre onto themselves, with recent examples including 2023's The Expendables 4.
It doesn't appear that the screen legend will be abandoning the genre in the near future. Some upcoming projects include the thriller Alarum alongside Reacher star Willa Fitzgerald and Armor. The trailer for Armor sees Stallone lead a band of thieves robbing an armored truck, only to find themselves in a tense standoff with the guards trapped inside. 50 years after missing out on a part in Francis Ford Coppola's gangster epic The Godfather, Sylvester Stallone's mobster dreams finally came true with Paramount+ series Tulsa King, co-created by Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan. As Dwight Manfredi, a fresh outta prison capo tasked with rebuilding his life and criminal empire out in Oklahoma, Stallone deftly balanced the show's ambitiously varied genre leanings — between comedy and drama, Western and crime thriller — in a way audiences, well, couldn't refuse. Now, after *that* cliffhanger S1 finale, the man they call The General is back to fight for his Tulsa King throne in the show's hotly anticipated second season. And if the first trailer's anything to go by, it's looking set to be another knockout from the guy who gave us Rocky. Check it out below:

The release of the Fallout series earlier this year not only prompted fans to ask for the fourth installment in the series, but it also led many to demand remakes of the classics!
Remakes of classic games have become a trend in the industry, and fans are hoping their childhood favorite gets a revamp for the new generation of consoles. Here are seven games we believe now deserve a remake!

When thinking of a remake for the series, many would look to New Vegas, but Fallout 3 deserves just as much attention! It is the third mainline addition to the series and the first to be worked on by Bethesda.

Blue Fox Entertainment has acquired the distribution rights to the true-events-inspired feature film, “Lost on a Mountain In Maine,” which will begin its theatrical run on Nov. 1.
From Sylvester Stallone’s Balboa Productions, the film tells the true story of 12-year-old Donn Fendler, who “becomes separated from his family by a fast-moving storm atop a treacherous mountain,” the film’s logline reads.
It continues: “For nine days, Donn fights to stay alive as he attempts to survive the unforgiving wilderness of northern Maine without food, proper clothing, or the knowledge of how bad his situation really is. His disappearance sparks a massive search effort that captures national headlines and attracts hundreds of volunteers, including his own father, who fears he may never see his son again.”

Rocky creator Sylvester Stallone has penned a memoir called Steps, and it’ll be with us next year. More here:
According to Deadline, Sylvester Stallone has just made a seven figure deal for the rights to Steps, a memoir that is described as “deeply personal” with a narrative shaped by teachable stories from Stallone’s life and career similar to the hybrid memoir/self-help scope of Matthew McConaughey’s 2020 bestseller Greenlights. The book’s title alludes to the iconic running scene outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art from Rocky.
Stallone has been especially introspective lately, with fly on the wall documentary The Family Stallone being a big hit for Paramount+, the streaming service which also hosts crime thriller Tulsa King, in which Stallone plays protagonist Dwight ‘The General’ Manfredi. Thom Zimmey directed the 2023 documentary Sly, which is available to watch on on Netflix.

If you go back and watch the original Rocky trailer from 1976, the narrator (some of whom would give poetic-like voice-overs in older trailers) would say, “His name is Sylvester Stallone. But you will always know him as Rocky.” There couldn’t have been a more prophetic statement as although Stallone would go on to have an iconic career with many classics as many characters, he is forever referred to as Rocky. While the recent Netflix documentary Sly gave audiences an insight into the career and personal recollections of Sylvester Stallone, the action legend will be releasing his memoir, which is due for publication in 2025.
Deadline has revealed that the memoir, The Steps, was the subject of a heated auction and the bidding war crowned William Morrow – a Harper Collin imprint — as the winner. Sources say that while it wasn’t revealed what the final price came down to, negotiations concluded around a seven-figure sum.

Exclusive: After what was described to us as a “heated” auction, William Morrow has nabbed the rights to The Steps, a new memoir penned by veteran actor and three-time Oscar nominee Sylvester Stallone.
William Morrow – a HarperCollins imprint – will publish the memoir in the U.S. next year. The book was sold by UTA to Mauro DePreta at William Morrow. All parties declined to discuss financial terms, but sources told us negotiations concluded around a seven-figure sum.
The Steps was one of the hottest titles at this year’s buzzy, Hollywood-powered London Book Fair. Nonfiction heads from all of the publishing industry’s biggest houses chased the project based on the strength of a passage from a sample proposal written by Stallone. We understand that Stallone took less money to team up with DePreta and William Morrow because of their enthusiasm for the project.

If you were trying to concoct the archetypal Hollywood star in a lab, it wouldn’t be Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yet for more than 20 years they dominated the box office, their wattage rivaled only by the klieg lights of a movie premiere.
The improbable origins and unlikely rise of these two action icons are told in a couple of documentaries in Emmy contention: the feature Sly, directed by Thom Zimny, and the docuseries Arnold, directed by Lesley Chilcott.
“[EP] Allen Hughes brought the Arnold project to me,” Chilcott explains. “At first I said, ‘What don’t we already know?’ And he said, ‘I said the same thing myself.’ But then I started thinking about how weird and unusual it is that Arnold’s been successful in so many completely different areas.

The Beach Boys are back.
The seminal American band, responsible for such tunes classics as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Good Vibrations,” originally consisting of brother Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, are getting the feature-length rock doc treatment. And with good reason – the story of The Beach Boys, a band known for their sunny disposition, is fraught with tragedy, disloyalty and acrimony. But all of that pain went into their music, creating something simultaneously euphoric and melancholy. And it will all make for a very juicy documentary – just in time for summer!
When does “The Beach Boys” come out?
“The Beach Boys” premiered Friday, May 24. Just in time for the long Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kick-off to summer.
Is “The Beach Boys” streaming or in theaters?
“The Beach Boys” is streaming exclusively on Disney+.

Tulsa King is Sylvester Stallone's first fresh scripted project as a leading man since 2018, breaking a grim Rotten Tomatoes streak. Stallone's recent box office success with The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 doesn't fully count as he had voice or cameo roles. Famous for his larger-than-life roles in classic films like Rocky and Rambo and, of course, his good looks, Sylvester Stallone’s family has also shared some of his famous spotlights along the way. Did you know that his real life is just as fascinating as his character on screen?
The relationship between his father, Frank Stallone Sr., and his mother, Jackie Stallone, has been quite interesting. Eventually, Stallone’s mother had had enough. The unceasing squawking, the feathers all over the place, and most of all, the uncooked sparrows were becoming intolerable to the late astrologist.

Schwarzenegger turned down the Night Slasher role in Stallone's Cobra, fearing the 1986 movie wouldn't do him justice. Cobra would have been a bad move for Arnie at the time, as his leading man career was just taking off. It took 24 years for Stallone and Schwarzenegger to appear together onscreen, which came with 2010's The Expendables.
Action fans badly wanted to see Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger clash onscreen during the 1980s, and one Sly movie almost made it happen. The bitter rivalry between Arnie and Stallone stretched out through much of the 1980s and 1990s, with the screen icons constantly trying to one-up each other. This could be in terms of physique, salary demands, the size of their explosions or even how large their knives were. This contest was as petty as it was entertaining, but what audiences longed for was for the pair to star together.

The International Documentary Association (IDA), Cinema Eye Honors and Gotham Awards have delivered their verdicts on the top feature docs of the year. And, for the streamers, it’s a grim result.

It’s been nearly 50 years since Sylvester Stallone broke through in Hollywood, first with a starring role in The Lords of Flatbush and then with the film that made him famous, Rocky. Now, Stallone’s life and career has been chronicled in the new documentary, Sly. As an actor, writer, and director, Stallone has often gone above and beyond in his involvement with films. Perhaps no film exemplifies this more than the first Rambo movie he made, First Blood. Stallone's movie career was initially struggling until the success of Rocky, but it took a few years for him to prove he could open a hit movie without his most iconic character. Stallone's dislike of sad endings can be traced back to his starring role in F.I.S.T., where he strongly disagreed with his character's death. Stallone's refusal to let his characters die has become a bad habit, as it has undermined the emotional weight of certain films like Last Blood.
There's a 45-year-old thriller that can be blamed for creating Sylvester Stallone's worst habit as a movie star. Before the success of 1976's Rocky, Stallone was a struggling actor/screenwriter who only appeared in supporting roles in movies like Death Race 2000. Rocky transformed his fortunes overnight, but what's easy to forget is it took him a few years to find his groove as a star.
