Saige Paints the Sky (2013)

FAQ

Saige Paints the Sky

A talented artist, 9-year old Saige Copeland (Sidney Fullmer) is excited about beginning fourth grade at Mesa Grande Elementary School in Albuquerque, New Mexico after a long summer vacation. She is especially looking forward to seeing her best friend Tessa (Alexandra Peters) again, but Tessa seems to have found another best friend in Dylan (Mika Abdalla), a girl she met at music camp. Saige suffers another disappointment when it's announced that, due to budget cuts, art will dropped from the curriculum this year. On top of that, her grandmother, the well-known artist Mimi Copeland (Jane Seymour), suffers a fall, breaks both her wrist and her leg, and won't be able to ride her horse Picasso in the 16th Annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta parade. Amidst all this disappointment, Saige and her new friend Gabi Peña (Alana Gordillo) decide that it's up to them to save the art program.

Saige (2012) and Saige Paints the Sky (2012), novels by by Jessie Haas, were adapted for the movie by Jessica O'Toole and Amy Rardin.

The parade begins, and Saige gets off to a good start. However, all the cameras flashing in her face cause her to freeze up for a few minutes until she gets back her focus and is able to continue, even managing to do the scarf trick. Following the parade, the crowd moves to the Kimo theater to see Saige's 'Living Art' fund-raising program. With $3000 left to go in their goal of raising $5000 to fund Mesa Grande's art program, everyone is pleased when they raise $992 but realize that they are still $1008 short of their goal. Refusing to be defeated, Saige conquers her fear of facing large crowds and steps forward to convince the audience that art gives kids like her a voice and to please with them to help bring back art to the school. By the end of the program, they are ecstatic to find that they've hit the $5000 mark.

Yes, Saige Paints the Sky is the seventh movie in a series of American Girl films, preceded by Un voyage à New York (2004) (2004), Felicity - Une jeune fille indépendante (2005) (2005), Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front (2006) (2006), Kit Kittredge: journaliste en herbe (2008) (2008), An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong (2009) (2009), and Graine de championne (2012) (2012).
