A German-Jewish publishing family seeks their fortune in Sweden at the beginning of the 19th century. They manage to establish themselves as major owners of newspapers and magazines, which gets a lot of attention. But when Hitler takes power and prepares for war, hard times are ahead for the Bonnier family.

The war is over and it's good times for Bonnier's newspaper empire. Albert Bonnier Jr. runs the family business and has plans to expand and transform the company into an international industrial group. But his plans are not viewed kindly by others in the family. This results in a family branch being bought out of the company.

When book publisher Gerard Bonnier dies in 1987 and Abbe dies two years later, the time of the patriarchs is over and Bonnier is transformed into a modern media group. The expansion mainly takes place abroad and in Sweden the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Expressen are bought up. The Gutkind group is formed by the new Bonnier generation. It also dominates the cinema side and eventually Bonnier also becomes the owner of TV4. When Jonas Bonnier is elected CEO, the circle is closed and the family members are back in the most important positions within the group.
