Taha Shah Badussha On Ambition To Be The First Indian James Bond & Whether Sanjay Leela Bhansali Will Helm ‘Heeramandi’ Season 2
Image
Exclusive: Fresh off of Netflix’s noisy Indian series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, Taha Shah Badussha has set his sights on Hollywood — and he has a specific, seismic role in mind.

“Let’s put it out there, I want to be the first Indian James Bond. Why not?” he tells Deadline in an interview. With the iconic role still wide open as Bond‘s producers continue to sketch out the post-Daniel Craig era, there’s no harm in harboring the ambition.

Currently managed by Steven Adams’ Alta Global Media and hunting for representation in the UK and U.S., Shah has eyes for Tinseltown, where he hopes his reps can help land him the “meaty, acting-oriented roles” he wants, as opposed to the “comedian” parts that Indian-origin actors have often been given in the past.

“There’s mainly just Dev [Patel] and Kumail [Nanjiani] in the leading man space, and...

Image
Actor Taha Shah Badussha visited the Mahim Dargah in Mumbai to seek divine blessings ahead of the release of his series ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Taha, who plays the role of a nawab in the eight-part series, wore a black kurta and pyjamas as he walked barefoot inside the dargah with a “tokri” full of rose petals and a chadar.

He then offered the chadar, a piece of cloth as a symbol of respect and prayed.

The actor, who has worked in projects such as ‘Luv Ka The End’, ‘Gippi’, ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ and ‘Ranchi Diaries’, was then seen offering his prayers.

Talking about ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, it tells the saga of love, betrayal, freedom and relationships. It revolves around the lives of “tawaifs” and “nawabs” in Lahore during the British Raj.

It also stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari...

Director Sonam Nair on her fabulous funny short film Khujli
After the critically acclaimed Gippi, director Sonam Nair is back with something completely different. This time she ventures into the world of short films and a very unique story. Titled Khujli, the film stars Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta in a tale about finding a new spark in marriage.

Sonam explains, “Khujli is about a middle-aged couple who get the spark back in their marriage by trying out something new in the bedroom.”

So what inspired that story? “The idea came from the fact that many mothers, including my own, seemed very into 50 Shades of Grey when it came out,” she says, “I was curious about why all these seemingly orthodox middle-aged women loved this book so much. There was some repressed sexual expression there, that had been dying to come out!”

The short film has so many funny moments, so did she ever crack up while writing the script?...

Reflections 2013: Break Out Stars 2013
Some of the best movies this year could not have done well without certain characters who highlighted the film with their amazing performances and there have also been films which we were happy to ignore completely had it not been for that one performer. 10. Pulkit Samrat

Pulkit Samrat may have not had a very great start with Bittoo Boss but he surely brought the best out of him with Fukrey. His character Hunny was an entertaining one and we the audience easily bought into his insecurities, mischeviousness and ultimately, his triumph. We are looking forward to...

Making (And By That I Mean Surviving) Your First Film

There are things people tell you, and things people just let you find out on your own. When I decided that I would like to direct films for a living, I was 13 and had no idea what a director actually does. Now, after having directed a film, I feel like I know only about a 10% of what it means to be a director. I guess it’s better than zero!

So, I thought, maybe I should do something no one did for me- write about what you might think making a film is like vs what actually happens.

Dharma Production – We have the strongest reserve of filmmakers
Dharma Productions was established in 1976 by Yash Johar, Karan Johar’s father. In the last 37 years, the film company has become one of the most prominent players when it comes to putting Bollywood cinema on the world map.

KJo’s celluloid ventures — from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) to their latest blockbuster Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (currently enjoying a historic run) — have taken his father’s dream several notches higher. And Dharma’s module of functioning, like a full-fledged film studio, is something many have aspired to follow. But very few have managed it so far.

Says Karan, “Ours is a young company with tall achievements; all of it is my father’s blessings. While we have been growing from strength to strength in each of the last three decades, in the last six years alone, we’ve been able to achieve several milestones. And this is because we have the strongest reserve of filmmakers.

Box Office – ‘Go Goa Gone’ is highest grossing non-Bhatt horror film
For Go Goa Gone, it was imperative that good collections continued to come in right through the weekdays in order to bring in respectable numbers. In that context, the weekdays did stay on to be consistent though on a middle side. The film didn’t fall much but then since the weekend collections by themselves were not so massive, a reasonable drop wouldn’t have made the makers cheer aloud. As things stand today, the film had collected around 20 crores which is decent but lesser than what everyone expected from the zomcom affair.

There is still a silver lining though. The film is now the only non ‘Mukesh Bhatt produced or Vikram Bhatt directed’ horror film to have brought in such numbers and that too while boasting of an unconventional treatment. This could well be a start of things to come where filmmakers may start experimenting with different ways of treating horror.

'Go Goa Gone' mints 13 crore in first week
Saif Ali Khan
Saif Ali Khan’s zom com Go Goa Gone has been released last week and it has raked in decent business. The film is getting good competition from Star Trek into Darkness – a Hollywood blockbuster and Gippi, a coming of age film by Karan Johar. The film introduces a few novel concepts in Bollywood. First, it is a hilarious mix of comedy and horror - definitely a new experiment in the industry. Second, it is a zombie film. The concept of zombies is not indigenous and the audience requires some guidance to understand the concept. These characteristics have made it a niche film and it is targeted at an urban aud...

Gippi Movie Review
She is 14-years-old, conscious of her looks, aware that is she is just “average” yet content being with her close friends and having fun her way. This is Gurpreet aka Gippi but in reality she could be anyone – you, me, a friend… Sonam Nair’s coming of age debut is a sweet account of teenagers and growing up.

Gippi’s storyline is pretty predictable and has all the ingredients of a teen movie – a mean girl and her minions, the underdog protagonist, crushes and heartbreaks, friendship… a lot is quite similar to something you might have already seen in Hollywood teen flicks like Mean Girls, Bring It On etc. Even then, Gippi shows a world which is relatable and there are moments in the movie where you would definitely identify with. And that’s because there are no Porsche cars, short skirts and six pack abs, this one is about...

'Gippi': Endearing coming-of-age saga with realistic performances (Ians Hindi Film Review)
Gippi (2013)
Film: Gippi; Starring: Riya Vij, Divya Dutta, Taaha Shah; Directed by: Sonam Nair: Rating: *** 1/2 (3 and a half)

At the end of this endearing film you have to admit it's not just the pre-pubescent protagonist who has come of age. So has mainstream Indian cinema. It can now talk about issues such as homosexuality and menstruation without a blush.

Meet Gippi then. She is free-spirited, unaffected, overweight and under-confident, though not willing to show it (her lack of confidence, that is). Gippi's story could well have become a trite pedestrian exercize in cliched sequences woven around the acne-ridden years of awkwardness and self-discovery. Instead , debutant director Sonam Nair gives us vibrant vignettes from a young.

Divya Dutta replaces Mona Singh in Karan Johar’s next
Mona Singh has been in the news for many different reasons, but this time it is apparently for her unprofessional behaviour. Mona allegedly walked out of Karan Johar’s next production, Gippi, just a few days before the shoot was to start.

A source close to the project reveals, “Mona had been signed on to play the role of Gippi’s mother in the movie. Gippi is a teenager and the film revolves around the problems adolescents face. She was the first choice and all the required paperwork was done. However, just close to a week before the unit could take off to Shimla for the shoot, she backed out.”

We’re told that Mona did not want to play a mommy role so early in her career. But in the TV show, Kya Hua Tera Vaada, Mona plays mother to grown-up kids. The source says, “It was quite a...

Vishal Dadlani
'Gippi' music energetic, suits young generation's taste (Music Review)
Vishal Dadlani
Film: "Gippi"; Music directors: Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravijiani; Singers: Hard Kaur, Udit Narayan, Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravijiani, Sukhwinder Singh and Neeti Mohan. Rating ***

The music album of director Sonam Nair's movie "Gippi" has five tracks. Popular musical duo Vishal-Shekhar have made it a point to deliver songs that not just capture the fancy of the young crowd with their beats, but they also give a lot of importance to lyrics. The same can be said of their tracks in "Gippi".

The first track is "We are like this only", sung by Vishal-Shekhar. One can easily describe it as a 'cool' track. With lots of drums and rapping, the track feels funky. It is a good number, but not a dance track. Hard Kaur's rap bits are.
