New wave in kannada cinema

Over couple of years kannada cinema has seen come exceptional movies which was ones fell behind other south industry

Movies like ggrv, kantara, lucia, dia etc has given us great experience in theaters now taking about raj b shetty's new movie toby in one line good movie that leaves you wanting for more raj b shetty has given amazing performance including the female casts of the flim, there are two songs and amazing bgm, music department has done a very good job, taking about the cinematography the wide shots blossoms the scenes the camera work is exceptional editing is also good.

Now taking about drawbacks the story has nothing new to give and screenplay which does a good job in bringing the characters to life has pacying issues and lives us unsatisfied at the end, in the end i would recommend it has one time watch but do watch it in theaters.

And you can watch it with family it has violence but no nudity or sexual scenes.

Good performance. But predictable story line.

Movie is one time watchable. Neither extraordinary nor bad.

Raj B Shetty's performance is very good in the movie.

The story line is taken along in similar lines as Garuda Gamana Vrishaba Vahana (GGVV). But it is not as gripping as GGVV.

The story becomes kind of predictable.

GGVV is great. Nothing can match that. One suggestion to Raj B Shetty is that, please move on from same story line. Try something a bit different now.

We have seen underworld related stories from our coastal side in Uliravaru Kandanthe, GGVV and now this.

When we see these movies, we start to feel like is underworld that bad there? It feels like we can't survive.

I know it is not as bad as it is shown in movies.

We need to see different side of our coastal Karnataka.

Good Script, Good Acting, Good Direction

I would had given an 8 to this movie if it was not for the climax in the movie. I should say that the Mangalore Gang has a good sense in making quality Kannada movies. They have the ability to know how to balance the commercial aspects of the movie, and also keep the movie artistic also.

This movie is like 'Gowli' movie which released a few months ago, but more commercial aspects in this movie. Raj B Shetty seems to have found the jest of making movies apt for him. You can see a little of Garuda Gamana Vrishaba Vahana in this movie. Raj kills the movie, while Samyukta has her part as the opposite. Other actors make you immersed in the movie. Wish the Shetty Gang, also known as Karnataka's Malabar for making Mallu style movies here.

Climax and the last song killed 2 stars

Climax and the last song killed 2 stars for me personally. If he wears the taboo in his nose, the song should had been shot in the local deity rhythm or language. But it's lyrics are of a father and belonged to a church.

It's a movie, but audience would have loved the local deity hymn and praises instead of any other prayers.

Acting and action are shot in tandem. Sequences and missing pieces are filled perfectly fine. Music could have been better. Screenplay and cinematography makes you feel that you are in proper Kerala.

Small and short shots when you initially realise that shouldn't be there are justified after intermission.

Overall, worth watching for acting but climax song makes u feel uncomfortable.

This ram was never meant to be tamed!

Newly appointed SI finds Jenny creating ruckus infront of the police station, demanding to find her missing father. As he takes up the case, the subsequent interrogation of four individuals reveal more about Jenny's father Toby, who has an entire shelf filled with his records at the police station. Father Iglesias finds him at a remand home and takes him in, by giving him the name Toby which is short for Tobias. But Toby isn't the peaceful god instead the replica of Satan. What is the story of Toby and Jenny? Why is he missing and what wrath will be bring upon his return forms rest of the story.

Screenplay written by Raj B Shetty based on the short story by T. K. Dayanand has it's strengths lie in the characters. In short, it's a revenge story but that is only the last act. The story building till the last act is what driven by the characters where not just Toby but the other four characters play a prominent role in shaping up the film for what it is. The narrative pace is slow but definitely effective and the performances stand out. There are several scenes that stood out and my personal favorites were the fight scene where it intercuts to his imagination of the wedding and that brief yet impactful shot of the coffee being served on a cup as well as steel glass. It does get predictable towards the third act but it is still worth watching.

Top notch emotional roller coaster

Toby is an incredible movie by Raj B Shetty set in the coastal town Kumta. The story is simple but very powerful. The acting of Raj Shetty and Chaitra is remarkable. Raj has once again broken the stereotype for being hero and shown that the acting skills can make anyone hero. There are some subtle points in the movie which have very in-depth meanings. The character 'Toby' is very interesting and forms the core of the story. This movie is so realistc, there are no unnecessary songs nor an unnecessary artificial comedy scenes. The scenes very well portray the lives of common folk in Uttara Kannada region. There are also portrayal of power hungry people, corrupted officers, etc. Even though the first half seems bit slow the movie is worth watching.

Testing my patience in 2023 (boring)

Story is mediocre. The screenplay is so boring, 45 minutes can be easily cut down and brought to 2hr0min. It's dark, brutal at times also with some humour. Acting top notch. Mixed feelings. I felt like raj sir is trying to be in prashant neel, rishab shetty club. He is special in his own way and he shouldn't try to be someone else. The climax almost gave me that feel. He should do something more like garuda gamana. To be honest I'll say there is no background score during comedy scenes too, if bgm was good i think it could have been bearable in first half. It's no where 10/10. Would give 6/10 for movie and 10/10 for acting.

Toby

Toby - Make Way For The Maari

The hard work, dedication, sweat and blood, all comes to a justification. I cannot say the movie is simple, I cannot say it's slow, I cannot say it's raw and I cannot saw it's emotional because this will take you to a tour on all the above. "Toby" a must watch movie which every individual and every age group can watch and should watch.

Disclaimer: Do not miss even a second. Forget everything and everyone for a couple of hours and keep your eyes open for the arrival of "Maari"

A big kudos to Raj B Shetty and Team.

"Maari Maari Maarige Dhaari".

RBS show, out-and-out.

Leave it to Sandalwood (when was the last time somebody said that?) to seamlessly write tradition into generic plots, this one a revenge drama and doesn't have as much tradition as GGVV did.

Raj Shetty - 1 of the 2 reasons why I watched this film (2 - Kannada is a fun language) and I wasn't disappointed. If his previous content doesn't already show, this man can really act! Props to Chaithra Achar and the child actor as well.

Was the film mindblowing? No, very predictable and slow. I wish they'd made a better choice of edits in the trailer, it spoiled a few things. I really liked how the story was written/told, though. Credits - RBS, boy can he write!! Some of the shots and the frames were brilliant!

Not as expected, very much predictable

As any other movie, this movie starts with the introduction to the character Toby but it takes too much time. Toby written on the palm is shown atleast half a dozen time and it gets irritating rather than creating curiosity.

The police inspector character looks very pale. Every character speaks with a long pause that the people in the theatre started talking.

The 2nd half picks up little pace, but the climax is very much predictable, thanks to the trailer.

A person stabbed multiple times and declared almost dead can be seen fighting and killing dozens of goondas within few minutes, just like any masala high octane movie. Bizzare costume and actions cannot elevate the experience.

For example, when the main character is crying during climax, we cannot sympathize with him.

Raj was liked for his story telling and much realistic approach. But here, though the premises looks authentic, it's just like another run-of-the-mill movie.

Music and cinematography are top notch. Acting is very good, especially Jenny (both kid and adult).

But, the content itself is so mediocre especially for the Shetty 'genre', felt so much disappointed. Hope Raj doesn't fall for the love of stardom.

Not very impressive with the overall movie however the acting of every single cast was very impressive

The makers' presentation falls slightly short of being impressive; however, the exceptional acting elevates the movie. The music and background score, unfortunately, lack the impact they intend to deliver. While the slow-paced clips and action sequences could have been shortened, focusing on increasing the overall pace of the movie might have resulted in a better output, especially considering the significant drop in quality during the second half. The film feels like a reminiscent of the lead's previous movie "GGVV." Although the message, dialogues, and content are well-executed, their delivery echoes too closely to the last film. The star-studded cast and well-rounded characters receive proper development and closure, which is commendable. Overall, the movie is worth a single watch, leaving the choice between theaters and OTT viewing up to the viewer's discretion.

One of the best films of 2023

This is one film that needs patience in the beginning to like\love the film, every minute detail there though feels dragged has a reason for it, the characters around toby are very well characterised and portrayed brilliantly by the artists, right from the young girl as Toby's daughter then Chaitra as his daughter, then Toby's girl friend Samyukta looked cute and well played the role, the villain had very good scope to perform and he did ruthlessly, Toby's friend acted subtly well and the main protagonist toby lived his character, we connect for his character and root for him, 1st hour of the film should have added some fun moments and cut crisply, the film is really good, a worth watch.

An Attempt to paint a huge painting on a small canvas

When you try to put so many things in a small container and it's filled up to brim and still you have one more thing left to put into it -of which a hype was created about that last thing , it looks misplaced and not fitting. Yes this is what "Toby " is . The makers have taken a huge effort in making there is no doubt in this . Excellent performances by all the actors and actresses. Great BGM and songs that merge so well with the visuals . Stunning Cinematography, locations , dialogues without which the film would have become another ordinary revenge drama. Yes, It is a good one time watch movie. What I noticed in audience is that they could not connect with the movie. It could have been better! Is what I felt walking silently with lowered head out of the theatre!

Greatness and beauty need no words, they speak for themselves

Could not stop myself from writing a review to this masterpiece. This is something which only certain special people can truly understand and appreciate. Apart from the magnificient acting, screenplay, direction and action, there is something more to Toby which makes it a classic. It is an extraordinary experience which is beyond words as is well personified by the character with a speech impairment. It is something out of this world which one can understand only if he/she knows certain things or has experienced certain special things in his/her life. No matter how much people say that it is a fictional account, but I can bet that this character and this story surely has some real life connection. Anyway, a must watch Toby, has the capacity to take you to a different world. Mesmerizing.....

This is what 'Genius Filmmaking' is all about !

Firstly let me clear everyone that, 'TOBY' is not a movie for Normal Audiences who likes fast paced action masala kind of films. It's totally made for those people who love to watch Slow burn Conceptual movie with some native mythological aspects added to it (like Kantara).

The writing of Raj B. Shetty was quite brilliant and his Acting performance is just Mind Blowing for sure. The way he portray the emotions of Toby according to his origin was quite brilliant for sure. The daughter of Toby (Jenny) as well as his Friend (Damodar I guess) also acted decently for sure. The Cinematography is the main essence of this movie, the way they showcased coastal atmosphere with stunning visuals were quite appealing. The background score was top notch according to the situations and music was also nice for sure.

The debatable part of this movie's technicality is It's pace. Yeah! The screenplay is really slow paced and will test patience of average cinema lovers. The first half of the movie is slow paced with nice introduction of the background of the main character but after the brilliant introduction was properly done ; it became totally flat with it's storyline, which is little bit of concern in this entire movie. As you are getting ready for a brutal response from the leading character but he is doing it with ease that too in slow paced motion Actions. But in the climax part, it was just visually excellent storytelling for sure with a English song in the background in the name of Lord Jesus. But yeah you can predict it's climax 10min before that's why it's lack to surprise you at the End. The way they finished it's storyline is justified I'll say and it's assure you there will be no Toby part 2 in the future which is Okey for me.

Overall a Good movie which contain lots of brutality in it that's why definitely not made for Family audiences. Although it doesn't have any direct vulgarity but some references were there. In my opinion it at least deserve one time watch & I will go with 7 out of 10 Stars for it as I personally liked the way director represented the emotional story and the way Raj B. Shetty nailed his performance.

TOBY !!!

TOBY is a great family movie with all elements sewn together in it. From an infant to a child to a teen to a youth to a mid aged to a senior citizen all characters of different age are portrayed in here to bring out this beautiful emotional story. To understand this movie one has to leave behind GGVV and Kantara and then watch it and not compare TOBY to them. Towards the end of the movie each one of us in the theatre became Toby that is dumb ( we were speechless ), such is the impact of the climax which conveys a father's emotions, agony and his revenge on the loss of the only person he lived his life with that is his daughter Jenny. The artists Raj B. Shetty, Chaitra J. Achar, Raj Deepak Shetty and Samyukta Hornad have portrayed their characters in such realistic and natural way that we feel them and that those characters could be any one of us in our day to day life. Kudos team Toby !

Ambitious but falls short

The story and characters are well written but it is not translated to the big screen. The themes of the movie do not come across easily.

While Raj B. Shetty showcases his exceptional acting skills once again. The connections between characters are not translated as well.

The movie has its lulls and those moments add no value to the overall plotline and story. It was a major risk presenting Toby as the main character whose actions were the main drivers of the story.

Towards the end, the consistency of the story falls apart and some of the reactions are not justified in the right way.

The story fails to keep your attention.

Raw and Rustic one from Raj Shetty

I like this kind of raw coming-of-age crime drama in rural settings. It looks along the lines of Raj's previous Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana, where a man becomes powerful using the strength and fury of a loyal outsider. I loved the raw and rustic setting of Uttara Kannada. The casting is spot on, with all supporting characters doing an awesome job, especially Jenny, Damodara, and Savithri. The child actor playing Jenny is excellent, and all her scenes worked well. Though it feels flat in a few areas, the circumstances surrounding Toby made me root for him until the end. Chaitra Achar is terrific as Jenny. The fishing location, mortuary van, and liquor stores were used very effectively. The climax, though expected, was shot very well with a nice background score.
