If you like the very popular British series 'Death in Paradise', you might/maybe like this Spanish mini-series (5episodes). Although honestly 'Una vida menos en Canarias' does not reach the GREAT quality of the British series. I am not making any comparison with another series, but it is a fact, it is a bad copy of 'Death in Paradise'.
Throughout the season of five episodes, by the way each one is a different case, we will see that in reality the interest of the series is in the archetypal representation of the customs and traditions of the islands from a peninsular point of view. Using all possible topics and copying the 'Death in Paradise' formula - crime in a vacation environment, the who did it?
At first, it is curious that the main local characters are not even from the Canary Islands, but they all play secondary roles, very strange!. In this case I would have used a lot more Canarian actors, especially in the case of the main detective Naira Oramas, an actress from Argentina origin, does not seem like a good choice at all! If she had been Canaria, the series would have improved a lot, at least one Canarian main role. At least!
Please don't misunderstand me, I love Spain and the mainland as well as all its islands, but the series is filmed in the Canary Islands, where are the people from the island?, the islanders? The Canaries? Again, this is the typical Casting Mistake of using a better-known actor to play in a new series.
I liked the photography and the different locations where the crime stories are filmed, beautiful volcanic landscapes and divine beaches, this is perhaps the best of the series.
The development of the investigations is simple, but there are also some unexpected twists in some of the crimes, some little surprises. That is okay.
I must say that I saw all 5 episodes, and it entertained me, it is not to watch daily but among other things. And it takes you back to vacation sometimes.
Judge for yourself. By the way, don't miss watching the crime series 'HIERRO', recorded on the Canary Island with this name, absolute quality, yes!

Takes some inspiration from the british show Death in Paradise but is well made and fun to watch. The cases are good and the acting is solid and the locations are beautiful. Death in paradise has a lot more episodes and seasons and was superb all through so it is too early for a comparison with this one which is only five episodes old.
Each case is different and the plot twists are good. Though I watched it on Netflix with subtitles the acting was convincing enough to not let that distract too much from the experience.
I feel they could focus a little more on the other characters apart from the main ones, but that may be an area to explore for future episodes if they make more.
Overall I recommend it and think they should make more episodes as five is too less.
