The solo feature directing debut of Spanish filmmaker Caye Casas, the horror comedy The Coffee Table (a.k.a. La mesita del comedor) was made in 2022 and got a lot of attention as it made its way around the world earlier this year, with JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy giving it an 8/10 review that can be read at This Link and legendary author Stephen King recommending it to his fans and followers by writing, “My guess is you have never, not once in your whole life, seen a movie as black as this one. It’s horrible and also horribly funny. Think the Coen Brothers’ darkest dream.” Now, Casas has revealed that The Coffee Table is getting a Turkish remake, titled Cam Sehpa, from director Can Evrenol!

Caye Casas’s The Coffee Table delivered on of the darkest, pitch black horror comedies of the year that even shocked Stephen King. Casas revealed today that a Turkish remake of his macabre feature is now in production, with Baskin director Can Evrenol at the helm.

Casas broke the news on social media, revealing that the remake is currently titled Cam Sehpa.

The Coffee Table “follows Jesus and Maria, a couple going through a difficult time in their relationship. Nevertheless, they have just become parents. To shape their new life, they decide to buy a new coffee table. A decision that will change their existence.”

David Pareja and Estefanía de los Santos star as the ill-fated couple, with Josep Riera, Claudia Riera, and Eduardo Antuña rounding out the cast.

Revenge stories are one of horror’s most popular sub-genres that range from arthouse endeavors, to gritty grindhouse fare, to pulpy “torture porn” and everything in between. Turkish filmmaker Can Evrenol, who previously struck gold with the surreal and suffocating Baskin and Housewife, tries his hand in this territory and strikes a rich vein that bleeds deep. Sayara explores the same themes of family, forgiveness, trauma, and redemption that were present in his previous films. However, this hits even harder since the film’s opening text claims that this is all based on true stories. Sayara is a bloody baptism that leads to its titular character’s rebirth. The 16th edition of Manchester’s Grimmfest may have come to a close weeks ago, but today the festival revealed the winners of its pretigious awards. Our friends at MotelX, the excellent genre film festival in Lisbon, Portugal, have annonced the first wave of titles for this year's festival, coming up this September. Festival standouts Sasquatch Sunset, In A Violent Naure, Oddity, Cuckoo, Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person and Your Monster feature in this first wave. The Fantastic Pavilion returns to Cannes for its second edition, revealing seven Gala Screenings.

This year’s selection features “Do Not Enter” by Hugo Cardozo, “Aire, Just Breathe” directed by Leticia Tonos, Doug Rao’s “Dirty Boy,” Can Evrenol’s “Sayara,” “Mourir or Not Mourir” by Thomas Combret, Andreas Marschall’s “Black.White.Red.” and “Vadakkan” by Sajeed A.

“The Galas proved to be one of our most appealing assets and a massive draw. This year, we are repeating this format in the exact same way: seven screenings, with cast and crew in attendance, at 8pm [Cet] at the Olympia Cinema,” said Pablo Guisa Koestinger, Fantastic Pavilion executive director and CEO at Morbido Group.

Thanks to the Pavilion, the genre community in Cannes “came together, embraced it as its own and found a place they can call home,” he noted.
