Showtime has acquired the rights to the weekly “Vice” docuseries and ordered a new 13-episode season, the network announced Tuesday. It will premiere in the spring of 2020.
“As so much of television news has moved in a direction of partisan coverage and talking heads, the team behind Vice continues to delve deep into the global issues, conflicts and newsmakers affecting our everyday lives,” said Vinnie Malhotra, Executive Vice President of Showtime’s nonfiction programming. “They also do it with an incredibly diverse cadre of journalists – both in front of and behind the camera. Their dogged pursuit of award-winning journalism, is matched by stellar filmmaking and craft in this weekly documentary series. We’re honored and excited to partner with them moving forward.”

A senior Vice Media employee, Jason Mojica, has been suspended as the company launches an internal investigation surrounding his involvement in a recent accusation of misconduct, TheWrap has learned. An individual familiar with the matter said that Mojica, who serves as an executive producer at the company’s documentary arm, Vice Documentary Films, was suspended on Thursday while the investigation is ongoing. Mojica was named in an explosive article in the Daily Beast earlier this week which described an allegation of sexual harassment against former L.A. bureau chief Kaj Larsen. Vice Media says it is conducting an investigation after a former Vice employee went on-the-record in a Daily Beast article detailing a culture of inappropriate conduct at the company’s Los Angeles offices, including sexual harassment by former L.A. bureau chief Kaj Larsen. Former Vice associate producer Phoebe Barghouty told Daily Beast that the pattern of inappropriate behavior began in the summer of 2015, right after she was hired, when Larsen made sexually charged comments to her at the first workplace social function she attended. She said he later asked her to come to his home where he met her shirtless and.

Only one foreign rock band has ever performed in North Korea. Any guesses? Here’s a hint: Instead of thinking about the musicians who Kim Jong-un would invite to his tetchy hermit kingdom, try thinking about the musicians who might actually take him up on the offer. U2? No. Kid Rock? It’s a toss-up. The Slovenian art band Laibach, who emerged from the ashes of communist Yugoslavia and like to parody fascist regimes by adopting all of their favorite party tricks (sometimes with such a straight face that they’re accused of being Nazis themselves)? Absolutely.
And so, in August 2015, the current members of the Laibach collective flew to Pyongyang International Airport and prepared to play a concert in honor of the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese rule. Arranged by director Morten Traavik, a Fincher-like force of nature who’d orchestrated a number of trips to Pyongyang in the past,...

Vice is shifting its priorities, and it appears that some of its category-specific verticals will be affected by the shakeup. As reported by Variety, the media company will lay off approximately 2% of its 3,000 employees (that’s 60 employees, in case you need help with the math.) One of the people who has lost his job is Vice Sports editor-in-chief Jorge Arangure, who wrote on Twitter that the athletically-inclined hub “will cease to exist as a site.”
Variety’s report surmises that Vice is opting for its layoffs in order to devote more resources to international development and video production. That assertion is backed up by the statement Vice CEO Shane Smith offered when his company announced a $450 million funding round last month. “This will allow us to build up the largest millennial video library in the world – enabling Vice to widen our offering to include news, food, music, fashion, art, travel,...

A dreary day for Vice Media: The millennial-focused company confirmed that it has begun to lay off about 60 people — 2% of its work force — across multiple departments, although it still plans to grow. The cuts come a little more than a month after Vice snagged a $450 million investment from asset firm Tpg. It values the company at up to $5.7 billion, CEO Shane Smith…...

Last Week’S Podcast: Vice’s Shane Smith on Trying to Avoid the ‘Crack Cocaine’ of Donald Trump — IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast
There aren’t many actors as busy as Michael Kenneth Williams. Probably still best known as Omar on HBO’s classic “The Wire,” these days he’s all over the place: Playing Leonard Pine, opposite James Purefoy, in SundanceTV’s “Hap and Leonard”; as Ken Jones in the ABC limited series “When We Rise,” about the gay rights movement; or as Freddy Knight in HBO’s “The Night Of,” playing a Rikers inmate who befriends Naz (Riz Ahmed).
All of those roles are Emmy-eligible. But possibly the most personal work Williams has done recently wasn’t an acting gig at all. On Viceland’s “Black Market,” the actor served as a real-world journalist – entering the dangerous world of illicit trade, such as gambling underworld in New York,...

The Television Critics Association’s TCA Awards nominations are out, and it looks a lot like the Emmy race.
That wasn’t always the case, as TV critics and Television Academy voters were traditionally on very different pages. But that has changed in recent years, as Emmy nominations began to recognize more critics faves, such as “The Americans” and “Orphan Black” star Tatiana Maslany (who even won last year).
On this week’s “Screen Talk Emmy Edition,” we look at the TCA Award nominees, plus go through IndieWire’s list of 10 shows that Emmy voters ought to take a second look at before filling out their ballots. And later in the episode, we examine the best comedy series odds.

Last Week’S Podcast: ‘Better Call Saul’ Star Rhea Seehorn and Producer Peter Gould Discuss the Road to ‘Breaking Bad’ — IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast
Shane Smith is a year into his multi-prong TV extension of the Vice brand and he remains bullish — as he should be. Vice Media just landed a $450 million investment from asset firm Tpg, which puts its valuation up to $5.7 billion. Not bad for a company that started as an edgy street magazine in Canada.
Now Vice Media’s assets include the TV network Viceland, the nightly HBO news program “Vice News Tonight” and the HBO documentary series “Vice,” several digital channels, and a film unit, among many other things. Viceland is on tap to expand into 80 territories. And in a world where Facebook and Google dominate, Smith is growing Vice’s library to be what he calls the largest collection of millennial intellectual property out there.
IndieWire’s Turn It On sat down with Smith to discuss the status of Vice’s expansion, plus running a company that prides itself on reporting the truth despite living in a time of a president who spreads lies and is stirring up hatred against the media. Listen below!
Smith has ambitious plans for Viceland over the next year and a half, as he looks to the future and realizes that only the strongest networks will be included in “skinny bundle” offerings.
“Online and TV, it’s all going to merge,” he said. “If you look at skinny bundles, it will be skinny bundles for cable but also Ott [over-the-top] providers. Unless you’re in on the skinny bundle on both sides, you’re going to be screwed. We want to get into the top 30 [of networks], that’s our goal for the next 18 months.”
How might Viceland reach that goal? “Having the largest library of millennial IP is important for us,” he said. Smith is also watching as other networks – such as Pivot and Esquire – fade away. “People are looking at us and mimicking what we’ve done,” Smith said of using a linear platform to build up that video library.
As for operating multiple operations with multiple partners (A+E, HBO), Smith admits that there is a bit of confusion out there. But he lays it out this way: News goes to Vice News via the HBO properties, and lifestyle goes to Viceland via A+E. “The good news for me as a megalomaniac is that I vote the board, 95% of the parent. I can Napoleon or Stalin it between the networks.”
While we live in an age of outrage, Vice built its brand on usurping tradition and occasionally courting controversy. “If you are trying to manage out of fear of what will happen, you’re not going to do anything new or innovative,” he said.
But Smith said Vice has gotten more careful: “In this day and age of opposition research, we have to be buttoned up and squeaky clean. At some point there has to be a backlash. Everyone goes after everybody. It becomes mud slinging.”
As for his partners, “I think they’d like us to be a little more controversial because controversy brings in ratings. They would like to see more Kim Jong-un [who appeared on the first episode of “Vice” on HBO] in the mix.”
How does Vice navigate the current Trump administration? “Early on we said we can’t fall prey to the crack cocaine that is Trump because if you get addicted to it you have to ween yourself off,” Smith said. “What we did say to differentiate ourselves was we were going to follow policy. Trump can tweet and do all these things but, what does it mean to have [Scott] Pruitt running the Epa who tried to shut down the Epa? What does it mean to have [Rick] Perry running the Department of Energy when he campaigned to undo the Department of Energy?
“What does it mean that the entirety of Trump’s cabinet are climate change deniers? Thats being lost in the headlines. We are literally marching backwards as fast as we can. Not just for the environment but social justice, Lgbtq rights, and were obsessed with lunatic fringe tweets. It’s the greatest reality show ever but the symptoms are dire.”
With Vice reporters risking their lives in hotspots around the globe, Smith is particularly sensitive to Trump’s attacks on the press.
“He calls the press the opposition, but that’s the press’ job,” Smith said. “Without free press there is no democracy, it’s just propaganda.”
Does Smith think he could get anything out of interviewing Trump? “Anyone who gets an interview with him is going to get something. He’s not like Putin, who’s sort of strategic and well thought out. He’s got buttons that you can push.”

2016 was a year of considerable expansion for the Vice brand. Now, thanks to a new injection of capital, the millennial-skewing media company will be able to continue its growth. It has announced a $450 million investment from Tpg that values it at approximately $5.7 billion.
The investment will give Vice Media an expanded war chest, which it will use to beef up its presence in the worlds of online video, TV, film, and over-the-top programming. Much of the fresh funding will be devoted to original programming, and its safe to expect that a significant number of those shows will be distributed through Viceland, the TV channel Vice launched last year. The media company has also consistently committed itself to its network of online video destinations. In recent months, it has launched verticals based around topics like gaming, money, and activism, and at its most recent Newfronts presentation, it teased new shows for several of those digital hubs.

Vice Media has raised $450 million in funding from private-equity firm Tpg, and will look to spend the infusion on scripted shows, over-the-top content and a direct-to-consumer subscription service. The funding swells Vice’s valuation to $5.7 billion. It also gives the millennial media darling the ability to develop more shows for its Viceland cable channel, launched last year. “This will allow us to: build up the largest millennial video library in the world — enabling Vice to widen our offering to include; news, food, music, fashion, art, travel, gaming, lifestyle, scripted and feature films,” said Vice co-founder and CEO Shane Smith in a.

Vice has built an entire media brand around the concept of reporting stories that otherwise wouldn’t receive much coverage, if any. Now, with its latest initiative, Vice is giving its audience more context for the coverage it provides in hopes of inspiring those readers and viewers toward action. The media company’s newest vertical, as shared by The Hollywood Reporter, is Vice Impact, which presents articles and videos related to important issues.
Impact, which has been talked about publicly since at least last September, is Vice’s attempt to link the important social and political topics it discusses to link them to advocacy groups, protests, and other methods for walking the walk. “Our audience often says, ‘Well great, you've shown me the issues here, but what can I do about it?’” said Vice co-founder Suroosh Alvi in a video introducing Impact. “That question doesn't have easy answers. Cue the handmaids.
The Tribeca Film Festival announced its second annual Tribeca TV program on Thursday and it includes a range of world premieres, popular show returns and a slate of independent pilots. One of the most highly anticipated debuts will be Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Tribeca 2017 Lineup: New Fillms From Alex Gibney, Azazel Jacobs and Laurie Simmons Lead the Eclectic Mix
The series has been in the news lately, and not only because it will premiere soon. The dystopian story about a government forcing fertile women to become breeders for their high-ranking officials has struck a nerve among progressive women who are wary of having their health and reproductive rights controlled. Recently, protestors dressed in the handmaids’ red robes and white bonnets made an appearance in the Texas Senate gallery as its members were passing abortion legislation.

This Past Weekend:
It wasn’t a bad Thanksgiving weekend, especially for the Weekend Warrior who pretty much nailed two of his predictions for the weekend! Disney Animation’s Moana indeed at opened at #1 with $55.5 million for the three-day weekend (exactly my prediction), although it ended up with more--$81.1 million--in its first five days. The Brad Pitt-Marion Cotillard spy thriller, Allied (Paramount), directed by Robert Zemeckis, also opened with $18 million, right on track with my prediction. I guess I could take some comfort on being spot on with two of the Thanksgiving releases—like I said last week, that holiday weekend is a bear to predict—but I way overestimated the other two movies as sequelitis indeed hit Billy Bob Thornton...

The Academy will announce its list of Oscar-eligible documentaries this week, a field that counted just 82 entries in 2005; last year, there were 124. And along with this growth comes a new attribute for the much-admired/often ignored genre: Power.
Under Sheila Nevins, HBO led the way in showing how documentaries could draw audiences with nonfiction programming that’s skillful, dynamic, and relevant. Under Lisa Nishimura, Netflix upped the ante with deep-pocketed algorithms that not only proved audiences craved this content (after all, documentaries are the original reality TV), but also guided exactly where those viewers could be found, and what they wanted to see. And while social justice has always been the bailiwick of documentary filmmakers, Diane Weyermann at Participant has given that niche the financing and clout it deserves.
While their business models differ, they’re all producing documentaries that might not otherwise exist, making them better and getting them seen.

The film stars Devon Terrell as Obama in his debut acting performance. It co-stars Ashley Judd (“Double Jeopardy”), Jenna Elfman (“Friends With Benefits”, Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Witch”), Jason Mitchell (“Straight Outta Compton”), Ellar Coltrane (“Boyhood”) and more.
