Production is set to start in April on a new film that will feature two Star Warsfranchise veterans in starring roles. Per Deadline,Daisy Ridley and Alden Ehrenreich will star in The Last Resort, directed by Donald Petrie and written by Karen McCullah.

Ridley is widely known for her portrayal of Rey in the Star Wars sequels, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015), Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017), and Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Ehrenreich played a young Han Solo in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, which was directed by Ron Howard.

Deadline reports that Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) are starring in the Philippines-set romantic comedy The Last Resort. The Last Resort has assembled an early 2000s dream team for romantic comedy fans, as it will be directed by Donald Petrie, best known for directing Miss Congeniality and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Exclusive: Star Wars vets Daisy Ridley and Alden Ehrenreich are starring in Donald Petrie’s Philippines set romantic comedy, The Last Resort which Asia Pacific Films is producing and financing.

Production begins in April. CAA Media Finance is handling worldwide distribution rights.

The Karen McCullah penned script follows Brooke (Ridley), who is determined to prove herself worthy of running her father’s hotel empire. She travels to the Philippines to scout a new resort location. There, she meets Ben (Ehrenreich), a charming expatriate pilot who helps her discover the beauty of the country—and a newfound sense of freedom. As love and duty collide, Brooke must choose between the life she’s built and the one she’s only just begun to love. Petrie has directed such rom com hits as Miss Congeniality and How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days.

However, the resulting film is considered one of the worst of the genre and was a bomb at the global box office when it opened in 2011, earning $237 million against a $200 million production budget.

Speaking with Variety ahead of his next film Cleaner, Campbell opened up about all the reasons why his Green Lantern movie was so awful. It all comes down to enthusiasm for a project, in this case a comic book adaptation. As he explained:

Review: It’s hard to make a movie about terrorists holding hostages for ransom and not think of Die Hard. Set it in a skyscraper and you can practically hear someone in the distance saying “Yippee Ki-Yay.” The comparisons are always going to be there when a certain combination of story and setting arises. And while it’s hard not to be constantly reminded of that night with John McClane, Martin Campbell’s Cleaner is able to do enough to stand on its own with a salient message about revolution. While it’s certainly not without flaws, it’s damn entertaining.

Certain cinematic elements automatically pique my interest in a film. When it comes to Cleaner, the starring role of Daisy Ridley (Star Wars Sequel Trilogy), the direction of Martin Campbell, and a Die Hard-style premise all meet – if not exceed – the minimum requirements to get me to the big screen or, in this case, the comfort of my couch. However, these elements alone don’t mean expectations can’t be adjusted realistically.

Looking at the official synopsis of Cleaner, I expected nothing more, nothing less than a generic variation of the successful formula established by the aforementioned classic. Ridley plays Joey, a former soldier turned window cleaner who finds herself suspended 50 stories high on the exterior of a skyscraper after a group of radical activists takes control of an energy company’s annual gala. With 300 hostages and a terrorist infiltrator among the activists, Joey is forced to save the innocent...

It can be hard to make a movie about a group of terrorists holding a bunch of hostages in a skyscraper, without sounding like a Die Hard ripoff. But I’ve never been one to dislike a film solely due to it being a familiar story, it’s all about the execution. And I’m happy to say that Martin Campbell’s latest action film, Cleaner, takes the Die Hard formula and gives it modern stakes. You can check out my review later this week, but I’ll just say now that I had an absolute blast with it. This is everything I wanted Carry On to be.

Daisy Ridley channels Die Hard's John McClane in Cleaner, an uneven action-thriller that has the Star Wars heroine hanging off a London skyscraper while battling ruthless eco-terrorists. She trades in her lightsaber for savage beatdowns in a bone-crushing medley of fists, guns, and pretty much any sharp weapon in the immediate vicinity. The film's straightforward premise has its share of unexpected twists but fails the logic test by a country mile. Head-scratching developments critical to the plot challenges willing suspension of disbelief. One in particular is so pervasive, it almost derails Cleaner's positive action elements.

We first meet Joey Locke (Poppy Townsend White) as a scrappy girl sitting dangerously on her towering apartment's window sill. She hides while her brother Michael takes the blunt of a wretched father's abuse. In the present, adult Joey (Ridley) runs late for work while still dealing with the fallout from her childhood.

Cleaner is one of those unfortunate action/thrillers that tries to elevate weak action with an even weaker story. Martin Campbell’s latest feature is a C-tier Die Hard ripoff that substitutes the quality of its action for a poorly disguised message about modern-day terrorism. Daisy Ridley’s decent performance in this Liam Neeson-type action/thriller is not enough to save itself from being anything more than a forgettable and loud movie about senseless death.

Daisy Ridley, the performer known for playing Rey in the 2010s revival of the Star Wars universe, played the Force-sensitive hero for the first time ten years ago. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens launched Ridley into Hollywood stardom, but the actor doesn't usually revisit the movie. However, Ridley has revealed that she has watched The Force Awakens recently and says it's "sweet" to see herself younger on the screen.

Ridley spoke to Collider during a screening of her upcoming movie, Cleaner, but the conversation turned to Star Wars at some point. After a decade since The Force Awakens hit theaters, she reflected on her reaction when she saw herself in one of the biggest franchise revivals of the 21st century:

And before you assume her rationale has anything to do with the controversies surrounding the franchise's creator, J.K. Rowling, think again. Since wrapping up the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy back in 2019, Daisy Ridley has been stretching her acting legs and exploring new genres, from biographical dramas to psychological thrillers. Which is precisely what led her to Martin Campbell's latest action thriller, Cleaner. Ridley stars alongside TazSkylar, CliveOwen, and MatthewTuck as an ex-soldier turned window cleaner, whose job gives her a front-row seat to a deadly hostage situation at one of the largest energy companies in London's financial district. While the action is a major selling point for the film, the heart of Cleaner is the brother-sister relationship between Joey (Ridley) and Michael (Tuck), which sees Joey become the caretaker for her older brother after he is kicked out of another care home.

In October 2022, it was reported that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were co-writing a new Star Wars movie, tentatively dubbed ‘New Jedi Order’ with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as the director. The film was supposed to take place after the sequel trilogy, possibly featuring characters from those films.

However, by March 2023, Lindelof and Britt-Gibson left, and Steven Knight replaced them as the screenwriter. Daisy Ridley was confirmed to return as Rey in April 2023, but by October 2024, Steven Knight also left, and George Nolfi was hired to write the screenplay, with filming now expected to start in late 2025.

The movie has seen numerous delays and problems with writers and quite frankly we have no idea in what state the movie currently is.
