Daisy Ridley is about to join forces with another Star Wars alum in a new romance film. While fans are waiting to see Ridley return as Rey in her new Star Wars movie that keeps getting delayed, the actress has certainly stayed busy with films like Magpie, The Young Woman and the Sea, Cleaner, and We Bury the Dead. It seems like she has landed a new project while her Star Wars continuation gets off the ground, and she will share the screen with young Han Solo himself, Alden Ehrenreich.
Deadline reports that Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) are starring in the Philippines-set romantic comedy The Last Resort. The Last Resort has assembled an early 2000s dream team for romantic comedy fans, as it will be directed by Donald Petrie, best known for directing Miss Congeniality and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Quick LinksWhat Is Daisy Ridley's Cleaner About?Cleaner Has Direct Die Hard Parallels
The following contains spoilers for Cleaner, now playing in theaters.
The Die Hard movies are arguably the gold standard for action films. Even if they aren't someone's favorite, it's hard to deny they elevated the genre. To this day, fans adore Bruce Willis' John McClane and how many terrorists he fought in this franchise, creating some of the entertainment industry's most rollicking rides.
It molded the iconic Gruber brothers, who are some of cinema's most fearsome criminals. Another big reason why it's so beloved is how it nailed the concept of hostages being taken, whether in skyscrapers or airports. One 2025 British thriller has that same energy, and it features one of Hollywood's biggest names: Daisy Ridley in Martin Campbell's Cleaner.

The following contains spoilers for Cleaner, in theaters and on demand now. It also contains a mention of suicide.
The biggest surprise in Cleaner is Taz Skylar as Noah. Every great action movie needs a memorable villain, and Noah certainly grabs the attention of the viewer. He's introduced as just another one of Marcus' henchmen, but then goes rogue and reveals himself to be the real threat that Daisy Ridley's hero Joey Locke has to overcome. And Skylar is chewing the scenery in every moment.
In an interview with Cbr, Skylar spoke about the twist of Noah being Cleaner's real antagonist. He discussed his approach to the character, and how he played off his co-stars Ridley and Clive Owen. Plus, he gives his thoughts on if Noah got a properly villainous conclusion at the end of the movie.

One would be forgiven for not noticing, but Daisy Ridley, of "Star Wars" fame, had a new movie arrive in theaters over the weekend. Indeed, as director Oz Perkins' Stephen King adaptation "The Monkey" crushed it and Marvel's "Captain America: Brave New World" once again topped the charts, "Cleaner" arrived with hardly any fanfare. This is even more surprising when we consider the fact that "Casino Royale" director Martin Campbell was at the helm. Yet, it doesn't make it any less true.
Quiver Distribution's action flick "Cleaner" debuted on just 378 screens in the U.S., taking in a mere $426,150, making for a not-at-all-great per-screen average of just over $1,100. This one is going to be lucky to hold onto those relatively few screens in the coming weeks, meaning it will be lucky to clear $1 million domestically. That's ... not good.

Daisy Ridley, the lead actor in the new Star Wars trilogy, has a new movie coming out on February 21, 2025. The title is Cleaner, and per the actor's claims, she felt very alone during the production of the film. However, it wasn't because she willingly stayed away from the rest of the cast and crew. It was because the film's plot called for her character to be alone most of the time.

It’s a week until Oscars and contenders (see full list) are out in force adding screens ahead of March 2. This is always an odd period for the indie box office and statuettes will generally determine who ramps up and who tapers down, again. Also this weekend, a Chinese and an Indian film hit the top ten, testament to the ongoing importance of foreign films/alternative content at the U.S. box office that exhibitors have been touting this corporate earnings season. Becoming Led Zeppelin powers on and Universal Language has a nice expansion.

Martin Campbell is one of the best action movie directors, and that shows in Cleaner. The Daisy Ridley film benefits from Campbell's visual style and his decades of experience as he creates incredible amounts of tension. As Ridley's character Joey Locke desperately tries to stop an activist group, Campbell makes sure audiences feel just as anxious.
But how was that possible? In an interview with Cbr, Campbell speaks about what brought him to Cleaner and his collaboration with Ridley. He also discusses what effect his time working on the James Bond franchise had on the film. Plus, he reveals what he thinks modern action movies are doing wrong -- and reflects on the critically acclaimed TV project many fans might not even know about.

Here’s a weird fact: Shortly before the tragic events of 9/11, Jackie Chan was in pre-production on an action movie called “Nosebleed,” in which he would have played a window washer fighting terrorists at the World Trade Center. That movie obviously never got made, but the concept has apparently been floating around in the ether, because nearly 25 years later we’ve got “Cleaner,” a “Die Hard” knockoff starring Daisy Ridley as a window washer fighting terrorists on a different skyscraper.
As “Die Hard” knockoffs go, it could be worse.
“Die Hard” knockoffs are their own subgenre, in case you hadn’t noticed, and there sure are a lot of them. The formula is simple: Bad guys take over a specific location, a good guy is trapped in that location with them, and the good guy takes down those bad guys one at a time. The action comedy Old Guy is an interesting take on two genres that audiences have grown accustomed to over the decades. The movie follows aging assassin Danny Dolinski (played by Christoph Waltz) as he's forced to train a much younger replacement, Wilhborg (Cooper Hoffman). Alongside Wihlborg and his close friend Anata (Lucy Liu), Danny learns about more important things in life and the film reveals itself to be heartwarming as well as funny.
Old Guy director Simon West and Kill Bill alum Liu spoke to Cbr about the film. February always comes and goes so fast, being the shortest month of the year and one of the coldest. Notably, Oz Perkins follows up the fan-favorite Longlegs when he tackles Stephen King in the latest adaptation of The Monkey. Those looking for high-octane thrills will also want to check out Martin Campbell's The Cleaner.

Daisy Ridley is no stranger to taking on high-pressure roles. Look no further than her portrayal of Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. The hype and expectation for those movies was off the scale. The role instantly made Ridley one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood, and she's already confirmed to make a big screen return to the galaxy far, far away. But what about a foray into the iconic Wizarding World?
With HBO making a Harry Potter series, names are beginning to surface; just lately, we heard that John Lithgow is in talks to play Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. And while Daisy Ridley isn't linked with any role, the fact that she's a big, British actress is enough for fans to wonder if she'd like to get involved.
Ridley herself, however, has dismissed any notion of her joining the rebooted Wizarding World.

The upcoming Rey Skywalker film focused on the New Jedi Order starring Daisy Ridley was bumped from the 2026 release date. When it happened, it was a move that I was okay with because I wanted the creators to take their time instead of rushing to meet some deadline. It is a sentiment that Daisy Ridley agrees with.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting her upcoming film Cleaner, Ridley was asked about her upcoming Star Wars film and they were valuing quality over quickness of release. She said:
People have talked about it a lot that the release date often affects films and how quickly things go into production. So the freedom to make sure that this script is the best way to tell this story is wonderful, and I don’t think any fans would want it to be rushed. The wait will be worth it. Excursions to a galaxy far, far away aside, Daisy Ridley’s career of late has been refreshingly grounded with projects of all scales. From the modest but fiendishly entertaining domestic thriller “Magpie” to the soulful office dramedy “Sometimes I Think About Dying” and the inspirational sports movie “Young Woman and the Sea,” the wide-ranging filmography Ridley has been recently building on her own terms stretches across biting indies and classical family blockbusters alike.
With director and James Bond veteran Martin Campbell’s “Cleaner,” Ridley further expands her repertoire with an old-fashioned and pressure-cooker action flick, dangling from the glass façade of a skyscraper to give both Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and Bruce Willis’ John McClane a run for their money. In fairness, the tiny pleasures of the predictably paint-by-numbers “Cleaner” aren’t remotely close to anything a white-knuckled “Die Hard” movie or the magnificent “Mission: Impossible” franchise can offer.

Director Martin Campbell has never shied away from discussing the struggles behind his 2011 film “Green Lantern.” Now, 14 years after its release, he’s reflecting on why it didn’t work and taking responsibility for the film’s shortcomings.
While promoting his new thriller “Cleaner,” Campbell made it clear that his experience with “Green Lantern” left him with no interest in directing another superhero movie. “None whatsoever,” he admitted. Despite the film grossing $237 million worldwide, it fell short considering its $200 million budget. Campbell attributes a big part of the problem to his own lack of enthusiasm for the genre.
“It didn’t do business, I think, for a number of reasons, but the reason I did it was simply I’d never done one before,” he explained. “I think quite honestly, if you’re going to do a superhero movie, you have to be in that world a little bit, you know what I mean?...

Although her latest role doesn’t call for a lightsaber, Daisy Ridley uses new moves to take on the dark side in Cleaner.
The actress recently opened up about what went into the Mma fight sequences she filmed for the Martin Campbell-helmed action movie, which premieres in theaters on Friday via Quiver Distribution.
“I tried to watch Mma fights,” she told Upi. “Honestly, they’re so violent I struggled to watch that many of them.”
Ridley added of her character Joey Locke, “That level of aggression and that level of being very in your body, that was really the thing that was driving me physically for her.”

When Warner Bros. and DC announced that Ryan Reynolds would be starring as Hal Jordan in the big budget adaptation of Green Lantern, with Goldeneye and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell helming, there was a lot to be excited about. However, the resulting film is considered one of the worst of the genre and was a bomb at the global box office when it opened in 2011, earning $237 million against a $200 million production budget.
Speaking with Variety ahead of his next film Cleaner, Campbell opened up about all the reasons why his Green Lantern movie was so awful. It all comes down to enthusiasm for a project, in this case a comic book adaptation. As he explained:
"I'd never done one before. I think quite honestly, if you're going to do a superhero movie, you have to be in that world a little bit, you know what I mean? You have to be excited by it.

As the director of “Green Lantern,” Martin Campbell was far from the first, and certainly not the last filmmaker to deliver a stinker of a DC superhero film. But 14 years after its release, Campbell is unafraid to be honest about its shortcomings — especially the ones he takes personal responsibility for.
Speaking to Variety during a recent press day for his upcoming thriller “Cleaner,” Campbell says the experience of making the film left him with a very specific level of interest in making superhero films: “None whatsoever.” Reflecting on its commercial underperformance (it grossed $237 million against a reported $200 million budget), he blames his unfamiliarity, and consequently, lack of enthusiasm with the genre.

Star Wars star Daisy Ridley transforms into a gritty and grounded action hero in this month’s action thriller Cleaner, which has now landed a deeply divisive score on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by former James Bond filmmaker Martin Campbell, Cleaner finds Ridley as a dishonorably discharged, highly trained ex-soldier who, while working as a cleaner, finds herself at the center of a dangerous hostage situation. Cleaner now stands at a “rotten” 50% on the review aggregator site, but we shall start with the positives, with Nicolás Delgadillo of Discussing Film heaping praise on Ridley and her affinity for action.
“Famed director Martin Campbell doesn't reinvent the wheel, but he does give Daisy Ridley the chance to show off her impressive action skills. This could have easily been another boring high-rise action thriller, but Ridley and Campbell know better.”
Maggie Lovitt of Collider felt similarly, saying, “Cleaner, starring Daisy Ridley, is the...

Plot: Criminal activists hijack a gala, taking 300 hostages. One extremist plans mass murder as a message to the world. An Ex-soldier turned window cleaner now works to rescue the hostages.
Review: It’s hard to make a movie about terrorists holding hostages for ransom and not think of Die Hard. Set it in a skyscraper and you can practically hear someone in the distance saying “Yippee Ki-Yay.” The comparisons are always going to be there when a certain combination of story and setting arises. And while it’s hard not to be constantly reminded of that night with John McClane, Martin Campbell’s Cleaner is able to do enough to stand on its own with a salient message about revolution. While it’s certainly not without flaws, it’s damn entertaining.
In Cleaner, Daisy Ridley stars as Joey, a former soldier who is now a window cleaner who can’t quite get her life together.

Star Wars and Harry Potter are some of the biggest franchises in entertainment, with major fandoms and serious loyalty. The two featured several actors who starred in both projects and now Daisy Ridley has weighed in on whether she might make a jump to the Wizarding World.
The upcoming Harry Potter TV adaptation, which Warner Bros. Discovery announced in April 2023, has yet to confirm the full cast. While there have been multiple rumors and speculations, the project is expected to star many accomplished British and Irish stars, and Ridley fits into that category. During a Q&a at Collider's screening of her latest film, Cleaner, Screen Rant reported that the actor shot down the idea of making a jump to the Harry Potter universe.

Daisy Ridley fought to save the galaxy in Star Wars, but her battle in Cleaner is even tougher. The action film stars Ridley as Joey Locke, who must spring into action when the building she's outside of is taken over by a radical environmentalist group. In the movie, Ridley trades in her lightsaber for working her way into a high-rise -- and Joey becomes a hero in a different way.
In an interview with Cbr, Ridley spoke about how Cleaner felt like a film unlike any that she's done before. She discussed the joys of working with James Bond director Martin Campbell and revealed how Cleaner captured the "vertigo" feeling of Joey being seemingly in mid-air. Plus, Ridley revealed her favorite part of the movie -- which isn't what audiences will expect.

A team of villains seize control of a high-rise centrally located within the confines of a major city in “Cleaner.” They’ve captured the wealthy group of dignitaries gathered onsite for an extravagant gala, possess their requisite list of demands, and stand ready to make good on a horrific act of violence was that list to be ignored, but there’s one thing they didn’t expect: someone on the inside, ready to do what they can to stop them in their tracks and save the proverbial day.

Certain cinematic elements automatically pique my interest in a film. When it comes to Cleaner, the starring role of Daisy Ridley (Star Wars Sequel Trilogy), the direction of Martin Campbell, and a Die Hard-style premise all meet – if not exceed – the minimum requirements to get me to the big screen or, in this case, the comfort of my couch. However, these elements alone don’t mean expectations can’t be adjusted realistically.
Looking at the official synopsis of Cleaner, I expected nothing more, nothing less than a generic variation of the successful formula established by the aforementioned classic. Ridley plays Joey, a former soldier turned window cleaner who finds herself suspended 50 stories high on the exterior of a skyscraper after a group of radical activists takes control of an energy company’s annual gala. With 300 hostages and a terrorist infiltrator among the activists, Joey is forced to save the innocent...

It can be hard to make a movie about a group of terrorists holding a bunch of hostages in a skyscraper, without sounding like a Die Hard ripoff. But I’ve never been one to dislike a film solely due to it being a familiar story, it’s all about the execution. And I’m happy to say that Martin Campbell’s latest action film, Cleaner, takes the Die Hard formula and gives it modern stakes. You can check out my review later this week, but I’ll just say now that I had an absolute blast with it. This is everything I wanted Carry On to be.
I spoke to Daisy Ridley, Taz Skylar, and director Martin Campbell about their new film and they could not have been more generous. Daisy gets into the difficulty of spending so much of the movie suspended high above the city (while taking...

If you work or live in a high-rise building, you probably haven’t given much thought to the people who clean the windows from the outside. Or if you have, you might have wondered how they have the courage to perch on a small platform hundreds of feet above the ground. But you might want to give them another look. One of them might be the only thing preventing you from falling victim to a gang of terrorists.
At least, that’s the unlikely premise of the new action film directed by James Bond veteran Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, Casino Royale) and starring Daisy Ridley as Joey, a window cleaner who finds herself desperately battling a gang of eco-terrorists who have taken over an energy company building and taken some 300 hostages.

Daisy Ridley channels Die Hard's John McClane in Cleaner, an uneven action-thriller that has the Star Wars heroine hanging off a London skyscraper while battling ruthless eco-terrorists. She trades in her lightsaber for savage beatdowns in a bone-crushing medley of fists, guns, and pretty much any sharp weapon in the immediate vicinity. The film's straightforward premise has its share of unexpected twists but fails the logic test by a country mile. Head-scratching developments critical to the plot challenges willing suspension of disbelief. One in particular is so pervasive, it almost derails Cleaner's positive action elements.
We first meet Joey Locke (Poppy Townsend White) as a scrappy girl sitting dangerously on her towering apartment's window sill. She hides while her brother Michael takes the blunt of a wretched father's abuse. In the present, adult Joey (Ridley) runs late for work while still dealing with the fallout from her childhood.

Cleaner is one of those unfortunate action/thrillers that tries to elevate weak action with an even weaker story. Martin Campbell’s latest feature is a C-tier Die Hard ripoff that substitutes the quality of its action for a poorly disguised message about modern-day terrorism. Daisy Ridley’s decent performance in this Liam Neeson-type action/thriller is not enough to save itself from being anything more than a forgettable and loud movie about senseless death.

Daisy Ridley, the performer known for playing Rey in the 2010s revival of the Star Wars universe, played the Force-sensitive hero for the first time ten years ago. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens launched Ridley into Hollywood stardom, but the actor doesn't usually revisit the movie. However, Ridley has revealed that she has watched The Force Awakens recently and says it's "sweet" to see herself younger on the screen.
Ridley spoke to Collider during a screening of her upcoming movie, Cleaner, but the conversation turned to Star Wars at some point. After a decade since The Force Awakens hit theaters, she reflected on her reaction when she saw herself in one of the biggest franchise revivals of the 21st century:

Director Martin Campbell, who has successfully rebooted the James Bond franchise twice, first with Pierce Brosnan’s first outing in 1995’s GoldenEye and again in Daniel Craig’s first movie Casino Royale in 2006, has now predicted when he thinks the latest era of 007 will begin. Speaking with Men’s Journal recently, Campbell offered his insight into what the future holds for Bond...and questioned whether there will ever even be another reboot following the “legal thing” between Amazon and producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
“I mean, is there going to be another Bond? That's the question. I mean there's this legal thing right now. Which, by the way, when I did GoldenEye, there was a six-year gap between the last Dalton one and that. And now, of course, they have this problem with Amazon. It's ironic. It's sort of the same thing. God knows what's going to happen.

Martin Campbell’s Cleaner sets out to recapture the magic of the director’s two James Bond films, 1995’s GoldenEye and 2006’s Casino Royale, by engaging with ripped-from-the-headlines issues while also basking in the ostensibly reassuring warmth of a Cold War-era franchise blockbuster formula. Here the issues are climate change and radical activism, and the formula is a distinctly Die Hard-grade concoction.

Daisy Ridley may have grown up a huge Harry Potter fan, but she has no desire to take on a role in the forthcoming television series adaptation. And before you assume her rationale has anything to do with the controversies surrounding the franchise's creator, J.K. Rowling, think again. It's merely because she is such a big fan that she believes "the pressure" would be too intimidating to overcome.
In a quote the actress gave at a screening for her new film Cleaner, Ridley was quite direct about the reasons as to why she never even considered trying to be cast in the production:
"I haven't asked to be a part of it because, honestly, I am so… Those performances are so phenomenal that I feelit would be so terrifying to take on one of those roles. Just, I mean… a huge commitment of time, but really it's just, I just love the films.

Daisy Ridley, widely known for portraying Rey in the Star Warssequels, says there is one director she would love to work with in the future. During a recent Q&a after a Collider screening of her new movie, Cleaner, Ridley said Barbie filmmaker Greta Gerwig would be a dream director with whom to collaborate.
Gerwig, who is currently attached to Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia reboot film, also directed hits like Ladybird and Little Women. Although Ridley said she would love to work with the acclaimed writer-director, she thinks that another actress will get cast in Narnia.

Since wrapping up the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy back in 2019, Daisy Ridley has been stretching her acting legs and exploring new genres, from biographical dramas to psychological thrillers. Which is precisely what led her to Martin Campbell's latest action thriller, Cleaner. Ridley stars alongside TazSkylar, CliveOwen, and MatthewTuck as an ex-soldier turned window cleaner, whose job gives her a front-row seat to a deadly hostage situation at one of the largest energy companies in London's financial district. While the action is a major selling point for the film, the heart of Cleaner is the brother-sister relationship between Joey (Ridley) and Michael (Tuck), which sees Joey become the caretaker for her older brother after he is kicked out of another care home.
