As expected, Remo D’Souza’s new film erroneously entitled Be Happy has a lot to do with dancing . One would have expected Remo to move forward since Abcd (to perhaps Efgh?) . But Be Happy remains rigidly rooted to an elementary school of thought. The writing, though benign, is facile and innocuously manipulative.

Putting a beautiful expressive talented motherless little dancer at the centre of the plot, and then thrusting a fatal illness on her, is exploitative enough. Hitting for the tear duct over and over again becomes a bit of an exercise in futility when it is done inorganically.

The actor had his share of struggles despite having such a strong familial background. For some time, the actor has been facing the wrath of the internet as rumors of him cheating on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan were all over the media. 2024 ultimately proved to be an interesting year for Indian cinema. Tentpole franchise releases collected a lot of box office cash, with “Stree 2: Sarkate ka Aatank” and “Pushpa 2: The Rule” both entering the top ten highest grossing Indian films of all time, and new franchise establishing “Kalki 2898 Ad” joining them on the list. Box-office numbers did not equate strong critical word for the protest though, with the majority of good word-of-mouth going once again to regional cinema. Prime among those remained Malayalam cinema, who started the year strong, with a quality release almost every month all the way to the end of the year. Tamil cinema too registered a few release of note, with “Maharaja” becoming the highest grossing Indian film in China upon its release there. Hindi cinema, despite the general opinion of being in regression, also managed to make its presence known, even if noteworthy releases were few and far in-between.

One of the more promising and consistent Indian filmmakers of this generation, Shoojit Sircar is most well-known for his steady, yet lightly feathered, bereft melodrama exploration of the human condition. Heavily leaning into the documentary style of storytelling, Sircar’s filmmaking is characterized heavily by unobtrusive use of the camera, hard cuts, and a vignette-heavy narrative that manages to encapsulate both the individualism as well as the collective nature of any political or historical event. It’s an extraordinary filmography, which is as remarkable as it is unassuming, simply because of the consistency of the quality of Shoojit Sircar’s movies.

For starters, I Want to Talk could have been an American film. Our persistent protagonist could have been an American man. Shoojit Sircar’s latest is already set in the USA, and it does look a lot like some post 2010 American indies. Even at heart, the approach is very non-bollywood – which probably is the reason for it turning out to be a box office bomb. But from start to end, it is very much clear that this is exactly how Sircar wanted to tell the story – with all his usual quirks, his typical brand of humor and some very ear pleasing Taba Chake songs thrown in the middle. 2024 for Hindi movies was like a kickback to the countless number of Box-office turners we got last year. After the sheer storm that movies like Pathaan, Jawan, Animal, and Gadar 2 brought out at the Box Office (their questionable quality aside), 2024 turned out to be a year where Hindi cinema got its mojo back – in particular the little gems that often go unnoticed.

The total 3-day collection of I Want To Talk now comes to 1.30 crore. The movie has entered the 1 crore mark, but still the overall verdict is extremely disappointing. The lack of buzz surrounding the film, coupled with it serving a particular niche might have resulted in the struggle to rake in numbers at the box office.

The Abhishek Bachchan starrer I Want To Talk was released on November 22, 2024. The film opened to an alarmingly low number. The film’s off-beat genre is also said to be one of the reasons behind the same. Let us look at the film’s second-day box office collection.

The Abhishek Bachchan starrer had opened at a mere 25 lakhs on its first day. This was not only the lowest opening for any Hindi film in 2024 but also one of the lowest openings in Junior Bachchan’s career. On its second day, the film saw a rise of 43%. It earned 44 lakhs on its second day. However, the numbers are still below the 1 crore mark, which is not a very good sign for the film.

The total 2-day collection of the film now comes to 69 lakhs.

Shoojit Sircar’s latest exploration of human beings’ resilience in existing with disease plaguing one’s body, tackled humorously, is rather muted in the humor but no less effective than 2015’s “Piku.” The similarities with “Piku” don’t end there. After all, Sircar dealt there too with an ailing father and the exploration of that father’s relationship with his daughter. Both “Piku” (2015) and “I Want To Talk” (2024) also share a Bachchan family member as one of the central leads. However, “I Want to Talk” is more focused, almost solipsistically so, towards Arjun Sen, played here by Abhishek Bachchan.
