Since George Romero’s seminal 1968 horror movie Night of the Living Dead, we’ve seen just about every zombie story you can think of. From mutant, flesh-eating animals in Zombeavers to apocalyptic comedies such as Zombieland right up to the wildly popular Western-esque The Last of Us, zombies are literally and figuratively constantly coming back from the dead. This has come with some downsides, as it’s becoming increasingly more difficult for filmmakers to create ideas in this subgenre that genuinely feel fresh and unique. Premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Meera Menon’s Didn’t Die forges its own bloody path by taking the story back to the barest of bones. While Romero’s haunting black-and-white DNA is all over it, Menon manages to design her own zombie apocalypse by making the monsters secondary and focusing closely on a family of misfits trying to navigate the complexities of relationships,...

Hundreds of Beavers premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2022 and released digitally in April of 2024.
I didn’t know much about the Mike Cheslik directed film prior to seeing it. I had heard the name and initially believed it was a nature documentary. I was very wrong. After reading the description I thought it might be a horror-comedy in the vein of 2015’s Zombeavers. Wrong again. It’s a genre-defying mishmash comprised of absurdist slapstick humor, and I absolutely loved it.

Jean Kayak (Ryland Brickson Cole Tews) has his life flipped upside down when beavers destroy his home. While attempting to survive in the brutal cold of winter, he finds himself at odds with various wildlife. Rabbits, racoons, wolves and beavers continuously outsmart the dimwitted man.

Nine years ago, Cortney Palm and Hutch Dano starred in Zombeavers, a horror comedy that got a good amount of attention because – as the title gives away – it happened to be about zombie beavers. Now Palm and Dano have reunited for the horror film As Certain as Death, which will be receiving a VOD release in the United States on July 11th. The trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above.
The feature directorial debut of Dano, who also wrote the script, As Certain as Death has the following synopsis: Desperate to help her addict boyfriend Richard, Kayla enlists the help of her sister and friends to stage an intervention, but the first step is finding Richard. Kayla documents their search for Richard among the allies and homeless encampments of Los Angeles, finally succeeding in finding him high in an alley. With the additional help of two friends,...

We’ve all seen the hackneyed, poorly CG-ed, primetime Asylum special on Syfy version of Stung too many times before. Director Benni Diez, every producer, and each department head go the extra mile to avoid such a fate for their 80s throwback creature feature. That’s what’s so endearing about a 2015 “When Insects Attack” flick with gigantic ideas and the right approach, rooted in buzzworthy practical effects. Stung would play gangbusters along with other abominations of nature like Zombeavers or Eight Legged Freaks (for different reasons), also classics like Them! or Mosquito, and deserves reappraisal for standing out from the swarm.

The lovable little carnivorous creatures from director Stephen Herek's 1986 horror-comedy Critters have been getting a lot of love recently and I for one am not complaining. First, there is Shudder's Critters: A New Binge series coming next month, which we all know about by this point in time.
But let's not forget that SyFy is also shooting a new Critters movie, which may or may not star Dee Wallace. And speaking of the latter, today we have word that the new movie has wrapped principal photography in South Africa.
Cinematographer Hein de Vos (Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell) shared a batch of vague behind-the-scenes images from the filming of his new Critters movie that revealed February 6th was the last day of filming - and if you look closely you can see the infamous ball-o-Critters getting ready to rock and roll down an epic flight of stairs. Not only that,...

Though the Critters films have never been popular with the critics, the franchise’s four-movie run from 1986 to 1992 apparently left enough of an impression on horror fans for the series to be resurrected decades later in the form of an upcoming TV show titled Critters: A New Binge.
With a title so inescapably reminiscent of the 1990 film Gremlins 2: The New Batch, it’s almost as though Critters is embracing its reputation as a Gremlins rip-off franchise, though going by the show’s first trailer, A New Binge is leaning further into campy comedy than the Critters’ mogwai cousins ever did. Complete with goofy, gory death scenes, over-the-top acting and low-budget FX, the 1-minute preview should provide all the footage you need to decide whether or not the series is for you.

The classic Critters horror film franchise is returning in the form of a TV series that’s set for streaming service Shudder.
Critters may be but one of several campy horror franchises from the 1980s to – akin to the soon-to-be-animated Gremlins – feature diminutive multiplying mini-monsters, but the imagery of its eponymous alien invaders – resembling demonic bipedal versions of Star Trek Tribbles with shark teeth and T-Rex arms – make them especially memorable, even if the poster image of the toilet monster from Ghoulies was more memorable in its ability to make tense experiences out of nature’s call for a generation. Regardless, Critters is getting a long-overdue return.
AMC Networks’ horror-centric Shudder streaming service will be the platform for a revival television series bearing the meta-minded title, Critters: A New Binge. Moreover, the series is arriving a lot sooner than you might have thought, since the announcement reveals...

Exclusive: Jordan Rubin will ring in 2019 by returning to the big screen with The Drone, the follow-up to his 2014 cult horror comedy Zombeavers about a weekend lake-cabin outing fantastically undone by undead Castor canadensis. Deadline has the exclusive teaser trailer for The Drone to start your new year off right.

Anita Briem, Neil Sandilands, Rex Linn, Simon Rex, Sam Adegoke and Christopher Matthew Cook co-star.

With the anticipated horror Death House being released in cinemas on February 23rd 2018, I got a chance to speak with actress Cortney Palm about what we can expect from the film, her character Agent Toria Boon and filming inside the haunted Holmesburg Prison.
What can we expect from Death House?
Death House is one hell of a ride. From start to finish the audience will be wondering what is going on and how the protagonists are going to survive. It’s more than just a bloody horror/thriller, there is depth to the Death House and characters beyond what you think you’re getting from just viewing the trailer. Think about what the CIA did in our history in regard to LSD experiments, and the meaning of Dante’s Inferno, that’s what you’re getting with Death House.

Ever since Ronda Rousey stepped into the Octogan and took the world by storm, Female Mma has gone to a whole new level. Everyone from Ufc to Hollywood is trying to cash in on this new wave of female athletes. Female Fight Squad is the latest attempt from Hollywood to capitalize on the swelling popularity of Women's Mma. Starring martial artist, and stunt performer, Amy Johnston as the main lead, Rebecca, in a prototypical fight movie. A retired fighter must get back into the ring to save a loved one from a debt they owe. As any good throwback fighting movie it is only natural to cast an actor from the 80's or 90's. Dolph Lundgren is that actor who stars in this movie, and doesn't overshadow the story at all.

Back in February, we reported that a number of genre icons were coming together for a new film entitled Death House, which has been dubbed The Expendables of Horror. At the time, we didn't known when production would begin, or if a release date had been set. Today, we have word that principal photography is about to wrap, and the filmmakers are eyeing a late 2016 or early 2017 release date. Photos from this horror-thriller have also been released, giving us our first look at legends such as Kane Hodder, Dee Wallace and many more.

Cortney Palm is gaining notoriety for her role in the surprise hit zom com Zombeavers. It’s about beavers mutated into bloodthirsty zombies by a drum of toxic waste that falls into the river.
They indulge their undead, bucktoothed, bloodlust on an unsuspecting group of young people in a nearby vacation cabin. Yes, you read that right. It sounds too good to be true, but it is. I feel pretty privileged to talk to Cortney who plays Zoe. I not only get some backstory on what I predict will be an underground cult classic, but also some interesting facts about a young actress with a lot of promise.
MoreHorror: First of all thank you so much for your time. I’m not going to ask you the standard question of how you became an actress. What I am curious about is that you have...

Icon Film Distribution and FrightFest have announced a further three films – all of which are personal faves of mine from this years festival – which will be released under the curated banner FrightFest Presents. The new titles are:
Night of the Living Deb, directed by Kyle Rankin starring Maria Thayer (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Michael Cassidy (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice), Christopher Marquette (Just Friends, The Girl Next Door) and Ray Wise (Infestation, Twin Peaks).
After a girls’ night out, endearingly awkward Deb wakes up in the apartment of the most attractive guy in Portland, Maine. She’s thrilled, but can’t remember much of what got her there. Ryan only knows it was a mistake, and ushers her out the door into a full-scale zombie apocalypse. Now, a walk of shame becomes a fight for survival as the mismatched pair discovers that the only thing scarier than trusting someone with your life…...

Zombeavers (2014)
Written by: Al Kaplan, Jon Kaplan, Jordan Rubin
Directed by: Jordan Rubin
Cast: Rachel Melvin (Mary), Cortney Palm (Zoe), Lexi Atkins (Jenn), Hutch Dano (Sam), Jake Weary (Tommy), Peter Gilroy (Buck), Rex Linn (Smyth), Brent Briscoe (Winston), Phyllis Katz (Myrne), Bill Burr (Joseph), John Mayer (Luke), Robert R. Shafer (Trucker)
It’s so hard to tell nowadays what kind of film you are going to get by just looking at the solitary picture and the synopsis. I seldom ever rely on the number of stars that it has, because someone else’s trash just might be my treasure. Back in the video store days, there were absolutely no guarantees even by looking at the videocassette box, but I guess that I just had a false sense of security that I could make a more informed choice. I’m slowly letting go, and just going with straight up intuition.

Editor’s note: Our review of Zombeavers originally ran during last year’s Fantasia Film Festival, but we’re re-posting it as the film has finally opened on VOD and in limited theatrical release. Let’s just get this out of the way right up front. Yes, Zombeavers is about zombie-beavers. No, they don’t look even the slightest bit realistic. Yes, you’re still going to love this movie anyway. Three sorority sisters head to a remote cabin by a lake for a girls weekend away from the boys. The trip was motivated by the recent revelation that Jenn’s (Lexi Atkins) boyfriend cheated on her with an unknown skank leading Mary (Rachel Melvin) to organize the weekend to help her friend heal. Zoe (Cortney Palm) is just along for the ride and the possibility of a full-body tan. Their plans are interrupted by two types of mammals. First, their...

To prematurely write off Zombeavers would be an easy task based on the numerous trailers featuring zombified beaver puppets who growl angrily at the camera, as the footage suggests a watch that takes B-Movie stupidity to realms yet unexplored. Who needs a bunch of undead beavers thwapping their tails against the ground while they’re trying to gnaw through a group of drunken fratheads and their sorority babes? Pointless nudity, radiated beaver dams, filthy double entendres, goofy creature work – do horror fans really need to be subjected to such an untamed zombie/animal hybrid?!
Yeah – you’re f#cking right they do!
The same could have been said for movies like Gremlins, Child’s Play, or any other heavily puppeteered genre exploration that requires heavy special effects techniques and loads of imagination. Sure, we already know how those two famous examples turned out. Gremlins is a classic monster mash for...
