Théodore Pellerin in Solo (2023)

A good showcase of the Montreal drag entertainment scene

Simon is a performer in drag cabaret. He meets newcomer Olivier, and they form a partnership, both personal and professional, going from solo acts to duets. Simon's sister is very supportive, creating the costumes Simon wears, and also costumes for other members of the troupe.

Simon's mother is a famous opera singer, and things get complicated when she comes into town for a series of performances. Simon tries to squeeze in time to meet her, and to get her to see him perform. It turns out that he has a special solo act prepared just for her.

This is a good showcase of Montreal's drag entertainment scene, with both snippets of performances and backstage activity. And while lip-synching is an art, the main emphasis is on performing the songs, often in a flamboyant manner.

This film won the TIFF Best Canadian film award. Recommended for those who are drag-curious, or at least not drag-averse.

Solo: Thanks to our Sisters

Solo is a romance set in the world of drag performers in Montreal. I am not a fan of most romances, straight, gay or other. However, Solo works for some of the reasons other romances don't. For one, the characters have back stories that make sense. Also, while his relationship with Oliver is troubled, you understand how this traveler from France would seek adventure with a good looking performer in Montreal, Simon, and how it might be less permanent for him.

The main character, Simon (Théodore Pellerin), has a complex relationship with his family, his sister being his biggest champion and best friend. The parents, not so much. Mom played by Anne-Marie Cadieux is famous in the world of entertainment and he yearns so much for her approval and love. His Sunday brunches with other family are not enough to make up for the fifteen year absence of his mother, gone since he was a boy.

The drag performances are credible and are woven well into the drama. Many of the performers have their own stories and they are touched on in the drama.

Incredible film, an all time favourite of mine

It holds a message that everyone should hear, and tells it exactly as it should. Sophie Dupuis has an amazing eye for capturing reality in a way that we can relate, to the point where I felt like I was watching life rather than a movie.

Thanks to the quality writing, acting, cinematography, and music composition, I was so invested that I felt like I knew the characters personally. I still have certain moments stuck in my head and feel an urge to rewatch this work of art as soon as I can.

Lots of respect to everyone who came together to create this work of art. It's one of those rare reminders of the level of quality, honesty, and significance this media can reach.

"Solo" is great movie, beautifully acted and filmed

"Solo" showcased at TIFF 2023 intricately portrays a complex and intense relationship between two drag queens artists living in Montreal, delving into themes of abuse, drug use, gaslighting, trauma, and the quest for love. It goes beyond stereotypes, refusing to be labeled merely as "another gay movie." The film's beautiful cinematography, stellar acting, and compelling narrative vividly depict the intricate layers of a romantic yet toxic relationship, mixed with one's desire to be a star. Its exploration of these dark themes is both raw and thought-provoking, leaving a lasting impact on viewers.
