Ready to get “Together?”
The film, which premiered earlier this year in the midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival, places real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie in a body-horror scenario. It has brand-new teaser trailer out Wednesday, which you can watch below (if you dare).
Written and directed by Australian filmmaker Michael Shanks and produced by Brie and Franco, among others, the movie was a sensation when it premiered at Sundance and kicked off a bidding war, with A24, Apple TV+ and Focus Features among the potential distributors. Ultimately, Neon won the worldwide distribution rights to the film for a whopping $17 million. It was the first major sale at this year’s sleepy Sundance and made the movie even buzzier.
The trailer doesn’t give much away, but the film is said to be a gooey metaphor for codependency, which you can totally get. The official synopsis reads: “Years into their relationship,...

In the wake of horror hits Longlegs and The Monkey, distributor Neon is back in the horror game this summer with Together, which they’re calling “the horror movie of the year.”
Neon will release Together in theaters everywhere on August 1, 2025.
Watch the official teaser trailer for Together below, which retains all the film’s mysteries while offering up some wild imagery that immediately calls Carpenter’s The Thing to mind.
And Together is indeed a body horror nightmare of Lovecraftian proportions, the upcoming movie from director Michael Shanks said to “put a meta spin on the body horror film.”
Together follows a codependent couple that moves to the remote countryside to become even closer. And they do, on a nightmarish physical level, thanks to a supernatural force.
Real-life spouses Alison Brie and Dave Franco star.

Darren Aronofsky is circling to direct Netflix’s Cujo film, based on the novel by Stephen King.
Deadline first reported the news of the film adaptation , with Roy Lee attached to produce in the deal made last week.
The 1981 novel was originally adapted into a thriller film in 1983 starring Dee Wallace as a mother protecting her sone from a 200-pound St. Bernard that turned rabid after being bit by a bat. The formerly friendly hound transformed into one of cold calculation that left a trail of bodies in its wake.
The climactic scene in that film took place when Wallace’s mother and her son face the difficult decision of battling heatstroke in a car that won’t start or confronting the big, rabid dog waiting for them outside the small vehicle.
Aronofsky’s more recent projects include Postcard from Earth (2023) and The Whale (2022) starring Brendan Fraser...

We found out last week that a new take on Stephen King's killer dog novel, Cujo, is in the works for Netflix, and the project may have nabbed a somewhat surprising director.
According to Jeff Sneider in his latest newsletter (and since backed up by THR), Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to helm the movie.
Though some would consider this the filmmaker's first foray into the horror genre, that's certainly debatable. Aronofsky has included horror elements in a number of his previous films, and many would view the likes of Mother!, Black Swan, and even Requiem for a Dream to be full-on horror movies.
King's novel focuses on a mother and her young seizer-prone son being terrorized by a huge St. Bernard who becomes a rabid killing machine after being bitten by a bat.

Not only is Stephen King one of the most venerated working authors, but adaptations of his work have become among the most iconic horror films. Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, which adapts King's 1977 novel of the same name, is continually cited as one of the most formative and impactful horror films of all time. The same is true of movies like Carrie.King's non-horror novels have notable and respected adaptations, including Stand by Me and The Green Mile.
In addition to their critical acclaim, many King adaptations have become box office darlings. The 2017 adaptation of It made over $701 million worldwide, and its successor, It: Chapter Two, made a still-impressive $467.5 million. Other box office hits include The Green Mile, which made $290.7 million and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. As the list of notable King movies continues, 2025 has added another impressive title, which has just crossed an important box office milestone.

Already one of the highest-grossing movies of the year and now officially one of the highest-earning Stephen King adaptations of all time, The Monkey, director Osgood Perkins' follow-up to the huge 2024 success Longlegs, has now reached yet another milestone as it continues its run as one of the rare box office successes of 2025 so far. After another strong weekend in which the film earned just shy of $2.5 million domestically, The Monkey has now surpassed the $50 million mark globally, thanks to a domestic haul of $35.4 million and another $14.7 million from overseas markets.

According to trusted insider Jeff Sneider via his TheInSneider newsletter, Darren Aronofsky is in talks to direct Cujo for Netflix, which would mark his first movie for a streaming service. Gerard Butler’s heist sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, is about to lose its spot at the box office. At the time of writing, Den of Thieves 2 has accrued $36 million at the domestic box office and $20 million internationally for a worldwide total of $56 million, and that $36 million has been enough to earn it a spot as one of the top five highest-grossing movies of the year domestically, until now. The Monkey is closing in Den of Thieves 2, trailing the film by less than $1 million, and it will certainly pass it by the end of the week, if not sooner. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera earned scores of 62% from critics and 79% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, higher than the original, but it grossed less money at the box office than its predecessor.

In surprising news, Netflix’s recently announced take on Stephen King’s killer dog story Cujo looks to have attracted Darren Aronofsky.
Well, it’s good to know that film news still has the capacity to surprise us. According to a report at The InSneider, Darren Aronofsky is said to be in line to direct the freshly announced Cujo remake at Netflix. The director of films such as Black Swan and Requiem For A Dream is a master at depicting psychological torment, and the tale of a rabid killer dog attacking a woman and her young son as they’re trapped in a car certainly has the kind of narrative set-up that will allow Aronofsky to deploy tricks of his trade.
After all, this is the filmmaker that gave us the delightfully bonkers mother!, which put Jennifer Lawrence through some of the strangest psychological horror we can remember seeing in some time.

Like it or not, 2025 is rapidly becoming the Year of the Freak Accident.
In horror, everybody from audiences who loved “The Monkey” to that very flammable fellow in “The Rule of Jenny Pen” is feeling it. But there’s even more to come when “Final Destination” — the genre’s most criminally underrated supernatural franchise — returns with scads more not-so-accidental deaths on May 16.
The aughts used to get a bad rap in pop culture, but that’s improved somewhat in recent years. As filmmakers have released their death-grip obsession on the ’80s, familiar faces and franchises from throughout the 2000s have reemerged across all types of movies and TV. Right now, for example, you can see the forty-something “Veronica Mars” dating that forty-something guy from “The O.C.” in a rom-com on Netflix that’s been wildly popular — in spite of the title “Nobody Wants This.”

Update March 17, 2025: Paramount's Novocaine topped the box office in its first weekend of release, earning $8.7 million from March 14 to March 16. The action-packed comedy starring Jack Quaid came in slightly under its $10 million forecast to lead a numb weekend box office. Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17 held on for second place, adding $7.5 million to the film's total domestic gross of $33 million. Rounding out the top five were Focus Features' Black Bag with $7.5 million, Disney/Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World with $5.5 million, and Ketchup Entertainment's The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which exceeded expectations with $3.2 million.

The Monkeyhas passed another box office milestone following its fourth full weekend in theaters. Despite nearly falling out of the top 10 this weekend thanks to a $2.4 million gross at the domestic box office, The Monkey has now successfully reached $35 million domestically. The horror film from director Osgood Perkins has also grossed an additional $14.7 million internationally to help its worldwide total fall just under $50 million, a milestone which it is poised to pass when the next batch of numbers comes in. The Monkey is currently the sixth-highest-grossing movie of the year at the domestic box office, roughly $2 million ahead of Mickey 17 and $1 million behind Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, but it will likely pass Gerard Butler’s action sequel by the end of the week.

Yes, this is the lowest grossing weekend of 2025 to date, but not for opera, as the specialty market found its maestro, Ludwig van Beethoven.
The Met: Live in HD transmission of Beethoven’s Fidelio grossed over $860k at about 800 cinemas on Saturday night, one screening.
Conducted by Susanna Mälkki, and starring soprano Lise Davidsen, tenor David Butt Philip, and soprano Ying Fang, the title had the second highest per-screen average of all filmed content across North America and ranked 11 at North American box office yesterday. Encore screenings will play select U.S. cinemas March 19 and Canadian cinemas on March 29, 31, and April 2.
Fathom is the North American distributor. The live transmission was directed for cinema by Gary Halvorson and hosted by tenor Ben Bliss.

Osgood Perkins is quickly becoming one of the best directors in all of horror. After an impressive start with smaller films like The Blackcoat's Daughter, the son of Anthony Perkins has truly taken off in the past two years. First came the success of the wild Longlegs, which turned Nicolas Cage into one of the most unusual and terrifying villains you'll ever meet. Perkins then followed that up with this year's The Monkey, starring Theo James in a horror comedy whose gory deaths will make you laugh and cringe at the same time. It'll be exciting to see what he does next. He already has another film, Keeper, coming out later in 2025, but in a recent online Q & A, Perkins teased the desire to make a horror movie centered around Darth Vader. Someone needs to make this happen!

It was a good news/ bad news situation at the box office this weekend for Paramount Pictures. On the one hand, their heavily hyped action comedy, Novocaine, starring The Boys’ Jack Quaid, managed to finish in the top spot (as we predicted). The bad news is that it happened to lead the slowest weekend of the year, with the $8.7 million gross certainly nothing to write home about. That said, considering that the movie sports a thrifty $18 million budget, it didn’t need to have a massive opening, and if word of mouth is good, it could become something of a sleeper. However, the B CinemaScore rating isn’t wild for an action comedy, so it’s possible it won’t be able to have as strong of a hold as the studio is no doubt hoping for.
Indeed, the race for number one didn’t end up being all that close after all.

For someone who only started directing 10 years ago, Osgood Perkins has done incredibly well for himself. Longlegs was one of the best movies of 2024 and in 2025, the actor-filmmaker is once again ruling the world with The Monkey. The film has been received well by critics and is set to push the collective gross for Stephen King adaptations past the 3 billion dollar mark. But Perkins’ brilliance shouldn’t come as a surprise. The horror gene has always been in his family. His dad, Anthony Perkins, will forever be appreciated for his performance in Psycho.
The Monkey, adapted from King's 1980 short story of the same name, follows twin brothers Hal and Bill Shelburn (both portrayed by Theo James) whose lives are changed forever when they chance upon their father's old toy monkey in the attic. Little do they know that it has dark powers. Whenever it beats its drums, someone ends up dead.

Kevin Costner and Elijah Wood are two of Hollywood's most dynamic and celebrated performers, with the talented duo joining forces in 1994 to headline the poignant coming-of-age drama The War, a thought-provoking film that focuses on a Vietnam War veteran who returns to his home and family in Mississippi and struggles to overcome his crippling Ptsd and war trauma. Wood appears as Costner's headstrong son, who undergoes a major transformation himself as he tries to find meaning and purpose outside of his dreary household by building his own sanctuary in the form of a treehouse in the forest.
Though The War ultimately proved to be a box office dud and attracted underwhelming reviews from critics, moviegoers appreciated the wholesome chemistry between Costner and Wood, with many raving about the younger star's vulnerable performance and the endearing father/son bond the two shared. A new Stephen King movie has become a major hit for the author. King is best known for his works in the horror genre, many of which have been adapted into movies. Quite a few of these have found extraordinary critical success, including 1976's Carrie, which has a Certified Fresh score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for two Oscars. Other prominent adaptations include The Shining (83%), Misery and the non-horror titles Stand by Me and The Shawshank Redemption.
On top of his critical success, quite a few Stephen King movies have become box office hits. The most notable of these are 2017's It and its 2019 follow-up It: Chapter 2, which grossed $701 million and $467.6 million worldwide respectively, becoming his first and second highest-grossing adaptations of all time. Altogether, half a dozen King adaptations have grossed more than $100 million at the box office, including The Green Mile ($290.7 million) and 1408 ($131.3 million).

The new Robert Pattinson science fiction movie has surpassed a major box office milestone despite setbacks during its second weekend. Pattinson is a well-known actor who got his start in prominent franchises, including playing Cedric Diggory in 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise, which spanned five movies that were released between 2008 and 2012. However, as he grew older, he began to take on more idiosyncratic roles.
While he has since returned to franchise filmmaking in a major way by leading the cast of The Batman in the title role, he has become better known for working with auteur directors such as the Safdie Brothers, who he partnered with in their 2017 movie Good Time, and Robert Eggers, who he worked with in the 2019 horror feature The Lighthouse. Written and directed by former GQ editor and frequent celebrity interviewer Mark Anthony Green, “Opus” is an A24 thriller about, well, the horrors of celebrity culture. A kind of tonal and narrative cousin to 2022’s “The Menu,” the film is a nightmarish satire set at a remote compound owned by a popular, potentially malevolent musician. The Monkey, the latest horror film from director Osgood Perkins, has successfully become one of the highest-grossing Stephen King movies ever at the box office. The film has now moved past The Shining and Stand By Me to become one of the top 10 highest-grossing adaptations for King novels and short stories, a prestigious accomplishment considering King is credited as a writer on well over 100 projects. At the time of writing, The Monkey has accrued $47 million at the global box office, with $32 million coming from domestic earnings and $14 million from international markets. While all hopes of surpassing Oz Perkins’ previous film, Longlegs, are now gone, The Monkey has still yet to give up its spot in the top five at the box office.

It's less than a month until the release of the next big video game adaptation, A Minecraft Movie, and we now have our first look at one of the popcorn buckets that will be available at Cinemark Theatres. Cinemagoers who are keen to see how the pixels of the beloved sandbox world translate to the big screen will now be able to own a piece of the action with a snack receptacle that is sure to blow up in popularity because the design is pure dynamite — literally because it's a TNT crate, taking inspiration from the game's pixelated model.
The bucket, posted on X/Twitter by Cinemark (shared below), was unveiled alongside several other pieces of tie-in merchandise for the upcoming block-rocking blockbuster. After scoring big hits with “Anora” and “Longlegs” in 2024, Neon wants their box office success to continue this calendar year, too. So far so good for the distributor on the rise: “The Monkey” was another hit for Neon last month, with a bigger turn-in now than Sean Baker‘s Oscar Best Picture winner.

The teaser for The Life of Chuck has finally arrived. The feature, which is based on the Stephen King novella of the same name, is the latest King adaptation written and directed by Mike Flanagan, who also made Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game. The upcoming The Life of Chuck, which is not a horror movie like Flanagan's previous adaptations, stars Tom Hiddleston in the title role as an ordinary man whose life is depicted in three parts, in reverse chronological order, beginning with his death. The cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Matthew Lillard, Harvey Guillén, and Mark Hamill.
Neon has now unveiled the first official teaser trailer for The Life of Chuck. The minute-long video opens with the sound of a clock ticking playing over a vast expanse of starry sky. The rhythm is then matched by other sounds from Chuck's (Tom Hiddleston) life, including a heart monitor and a blinking streetlight.

For the third time in eight years, director Mike Flanagan is adapting Stephen King’s work as a feature film. Flanagan’s first two collaborations with King — Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep — were both horror stories. But The Life of Chuck is something else altogether. The newly released teaser trailer lightly acknowledges that it isn’t a scary story by citing some of King’s previous forays outside of horror, including Stand by Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile. What it doesn’t answer is the question hanging over the film: Who is Chuck?
Tom Hiddleston plays Chuck as an adult, while Jacob Tremblay and Benjamin Pajak portray younger versions. There is an ominous quality to the trailer, which unfolds to the rhythm of a ticking of a clock. According to the film’s description, “images of a modest accountant named Chuck inexplicably appear everywhere” just as the...

When it comes to authors who have had their works adapted into major feature films, Stephen King has few equals. 1976's Carrie from director Brian De Palma marks the first of the author's works to get the big-screen treatment, and it paved the way for dozens more in the decades that followed. Stanbley Kubrick's The Shining was released in 1980 and now stands as one of the most iconic and beloved adaptations of King's work, even if the author himself infamously doesn't care for it.
Rob Reiner's Stand By Me hit theaters in 1986, marking the first non-horror King adaptation. It would ultimately be followed by movies like The Running Man (1987), Misery (1990), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and The Green Mile (1999). More than two decades later, new King movies continue to release at a regular cadence, including titles like Gerald's Game (2017), Pet Sematary (2019), Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022), The Boogeyman (2023), and Salem's Lot (2024). The Monkey is one of the biggest horror movies at this moment, as everyone is talking about the highly-praised adaptation of Stephen King’s story. Osgood Perkins took it upon himself to bring the cult story to the screen and based on the reactions, he’s done a pretty good job.
And while The Monkey will not surpass Perkins’ previous films, Longlegs, at the box office, the numbers we have confirm that it has just surpassed arguably the best Stephen King adaptation of all time and a true classic of 20th-century cinema.
The film in question is, as you might have guessed, Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, a classic of horror cinema and one of Kubrick’s best and most famous films. And while the psychological horror starring Jack Nicholson is now regarded as a classic, it had a very rough start, earning just over $47 million with a roughly $20 million budget.

Stephen King's presence in the cultural milieu never fully went away, but he is making a bit of a comeback from dipping in popularity. At least, as far as consistent adaptations of his work. That is completely changing currently and will continue to do so.
In 2024, Max put out a series based on King's novel, Salem's Lot. It was not perfect, but at least it tried to stick to what the author had produced. Taking a book and making it into a full series is tricky. A film adaptation would have probably been the wiser choice.
The Monkey, based on a short story by King, was a recent theatrical release. Amazon MGM Studios and the fantastic Mike Flanagan are currently working on an adaptation of Carrie. Edgar Wright is working with star Glen Powell on a new edition of The Running Man, and projects for It sequel Welcome to Derry,...

Despite falling short of Longlegsboth domestically and worldwide, director Osgood Perkins' follow-up feature, The Monkey, has done solid business at the box office. The horror film is adapted from a Stephen King short story, and is inching towards the $50 million mark at the global box office. Last year, Longlegs concluded its run with $125 million, cementing Perkins as a horror filmmaker to watch out for. Thanks to The Monkey's performance, the cumulative global box office haul of every King adaptation has nearly hit the $3 billion mark. On its 18th day of release, The Monkey is passing perhaps the most well-regarded of any King adaptation, The Shining.

The folks over at Neon have several reasons to celebrate this month. Not only did the indie distributor pick up its second Best Picture Oscar for director Sean Baker's Anora, it's also experiencing some much-needed success at the box office. Director Osgood Perkins' The Monkey has delivered a solid (if not spectacular) commercial performance, and although the film has out-performed several recent horror offerings, it'll always be compared to Perkins' previous release, the blockbuster hit Longlegs. Incidentally, each of these three films — Anora, Longlegs, and The Monkey — rank among Neon's five highest-grossing releases of all time globally.

Killer dog tale Cujo, by Stephen King, is getting a new telling, backed by Netflix money. More on the story here.
There’s an old maxim that suggests that there’s always at least three Robin Hood films in development at the same time. Given the never-ending glut of Stephen King adaptations that are pumped out, it would probably be more accurate these days to replace Sherwood Forest’s rogueish outlaw with the prolific novelist who always seems to have a take on his work in cinemas, or just around the corner.
Case in point: while Osgood Perkins’ take on The Monkey is still in cinemas, 2025 will also bring us Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck and Edgar Wright’s The Running Man. On the small screen, there’s also HBO’s Welcome To Derry and MGM+’s The Institute debuting this year too.

Iconic Stephen King Story Getting New Adaptation At Netflix After '80s Movie Changed Its Dark Ending
Stephen King is one of the most frequently adapted authors in film and television history, with these projects garnering wide acclaim for several decades. Brian De Palma’s adaptation of King’s debut novel, Carrie, created a legendary horror sequence in 1976 when Sissy Spacek was drenched in pig's blood. In 1980, Stanley Kubrick directed The Shining with a visually stunning yet off-kilter take on King’s novel. Ten years later, Misery won Kathy Bates an Academy Award for her chilling performance as an obsessed literary fan, with other successful King adaptations including Stand By Me, Green Mile, and The Shawshank Redemption.
Recent years have seen a resurgence in King adaptations, with Andy Muschietti's It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019) revitalizing the horror franchise as Bill Skarsgård took on the role of the killer clown Pennywise. Despite its box office struggles, Doctor Sleep (2019), a sequel to Kubrick's 1980 film, received positive reviews...

Netflix is preparing to make another Stephen King adaptation! According to a new Deadline exclusive, the streamer has finalized a deal to adapt King's novel Cujo into a new feature film with Roy Lee set to produce.
Lee is a well-known horror movie producer, having produced hit movies like Barbarian, Strange Darling, Companion, The Ring, and more. He's also producing the upcoming films Weapons and Until Dawn. But most notably, Lee has produced multiple King projects such as Doctor Sleep, Salem's Lot, It, It: Chapter Two, and The Stand. And Netflix has released a few adaptations, too, between Gerald's Game, 1922, and In the Tall Grass, so Lee and Netflix working together makes a lot of sense.
First published in 1981, Cujo is King's novel about a once sweet Saint Bernard who gets bit by a bat and turns rabid. From there, the massive animal goes on a rampage, killing multiple people throughout the book.

Netflix has greenlit a remake of Stephen King’s novel “Cujo,” a horror story about a mother and son who get trapped in their car while protecting themselves from a rabid dog.
Roy Lee (“Barbarian”) will produce the reboot, which has yet to attach a writer, director or cast members, per Deadline, which broke the news of the project. King’s 1981 book was first adapted for the screen in the 1983 feature film of the same name, directed by Lewis Teague and starring Dee Wallace, Daniel Hugh Kelly and Danny Pintauro. At the box office, “Cujo” earned $21 million worldwide (not adjusted for inflation) against a $6 million budget.
King’s novels, in genres ranging from horror and sci-fi to crime and fantasy, have been rich material for Hollywood, with films such as “Carrie,” “The Shining,” “Shawshank Redemption,” “Stand By Me,” “It” and the sequel “It: Chapter Two.”

With The Monkey nearing the $50 million mark at the worldwide box office, author Stephen King is set to add another milestone achievement in his already remarkable career. King's stories have been adapted into several iconic films, with the streak beginning back in 1976. Over the years, King has continued churning out tomes at a rapid rate, and across a variety of genres. The Monkey is the latest in a long line of adaptations, but is already among the most successful. Directed by Osgood Perkins, who broke into the mainstream with last year's Longlegs, the movie has grossed $45 million at the worldwide box office.

‘The Monkey’ Fights Back Against a Frightening Box Office Drop While Hitting Another Major Milestone
Thanks to a strong $14 million opening at the box office the weekend after Valentine’s Day, it wasn’t out of the question for The Monkey to reach the same box office heights as Longlegs — the previous film from director Osgood Perkins — but those dreams have now been put to rest. After hauling in another $3.9 million this weekend at the box office, The Monkey has now passed $30 million at the domestic box office, but the film has yet to find solid international success, only grossing $14 million overseas for a $45 million global total. Longlegs finished its theatrical run with $125 million, $75 million of which came from domestic markets and $50 from international earnings, numbers which The Monkey likely won’t even sniff by the end of its run.

The next Resident Evil film is coming in September 2026 it’s now been confirmed, with Zach Cregger directing. More here.
Ever since Barbarian released in 2022 and announced director Zach Cregger as a bold new name in the horror genre, we’ve been waiting patiently for his next film.
That next film is still set to be Weapons, a horror ‘opus’. But it now sounds as though we might well be getting two films from Cregger in the same year, with news emerging that his spin on the survival horror videogame series Resident Evil will release in September of 2026.
It was last September that we first covered reports that Cregger had signed up to tackle Resident Evil, with Sony backing the project after the filmmaker declined to continue developing a remake of Clue with the studio. That agreement is now official, with Sony even publicly dating the film, per Deadline.
