When a Hollywood actor is big and making lots of movies, it kind of feels like they'll stick around forever. There are plenty who do, but so often a familiar face will enjoy a hot streak before vanishing from the limelight. Back in the '90s we had a number of such actors. Alicia Silverstone, Meg Ryan, and Bridget Fonda all hit their peak during the decade and became household names thanks to their hits. And then they were gone, either suffering from a string of poor choices (Silverstone), taking a break from acting (Ryan), or retiring altogether (Fonda). Another Hollywood star who enjoyed her heyday in the '90s before vacating our multiplexes was Rene Russo. But why exactly did she disappear from Hollywood?
Russo was one of several models who crossed over into acting during the '90s. Some made a big splash in their breakthrough roles, like...

Now updated for February 2025, here’s our pick of 35 genre films – horror, action, sci-fi and more – you can watch for free on Tubi UK.
Like any streaming service, particularly of the ad-supported variety, there’s a lot of filler on Tubi, the subscription-free platform which recently made its debut in the UK.
On there you’ll find an array of low-budget documentaries of spurious quality, landfill reality TV and how-did-this-get-made TV movies (Amish Abduction).
Look beyond those films, though, and Tubi is positively stuffed with genre and cult offerings – sci-fi, horror, comedy, martial arts, thrillers and more besides. Finding these can take a bit of hunting around, however, so to save you a bit of time, we’ve done some hunting for you. We’re nice like that.

“The Fall Guy” has won the SAG Award for outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble in a motion picture, while “Shogun” won on the TV side.
Hollywood is seeing an elevation of stunts and a new level of respect for the community. Despite the awards being handed out during the pre-show — they are not part of the main ceremony — Stuntmen Association president Jeff Wolfe isn’t fazed by that. Speaking with Variety, Wolfe whose directorial debut “Outbreak” is now streaming on Prime Video said, “It feels we’re in a place of feeling a little more grateful and mutually respected, as opposed to having to fight and be against something.”
Overall, it’s been a great year for the stunt community. In 2024, the Screen Actors Guild and Directors Guild of America approved the first-ever credit of “stunt designer.” The title was used on David Leitch’s “The Fall Guy” with veteran stunt coordinator,...

Image Source: Sony Pictures In 2003, Kate Beckinsale took a chance on a little-known action-horror film called Underworld. The movie became a surprise box office success, launching a franchise that now spans four sequels and a short film. Underworld introduced audiences to Selene, a captivating vampire warrior caught in an ancient war between her kind and the Lycans (werewolves). When she falls for Michael, a human targeted by the Lycans, their forbidden love ignites a new chapter in the conflict. Interestingly, the role of Selene almost went to another actress. Beckinsale initially hesitated to even read the script. Preconceived notions about vampire films had her picturing a stereotypical B-movie horror flick. However, once she delved into the story and saw the director’s vision, her perspective shifted. The action sequences and the unique world-building immediately drew her in. Before Underworld hit theaters, Kate Beckinsale admitted she almost didn’t take the role.

Jeff Wolfe’s “Outbreak” (2024) is a low-budget metaphor-laden commentary on a massive virus outbreak that has engulfed a Californian locality. The film proceeds as a generic outbreak thriller. However, the ending problematizes our entire understanding of the information being given to us in bits and pieces, or at least what we tried so hard to establish from the incomplete shreds.

Pictures; & Amblin Entertainment Copyright Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures and Amblin Entertainment When actors sign on for a massive, visual-effects-heavy summer blockbuster, they usually just step into their character’s shoes and trust the magic of CGI to fill in the blanks. But Daisy Edgar-Jones, who played a meteorologist and former storm chaser in the box office smash Twisters, took her preparation to a whole new level. Instead of simply learning her lines and showing up on set, Edgar-Jones went all in, immersing herself in the world of weather science. She even attended “Weather Bootcamp” and teamed up with real-life meteorologists and storm chasers to nail the essence of her character. And she absolutely loved it. The writers strike caused a lot of films and TV shows to shut down production a couple months ago – and a lot more that were able to continue filming without writers have since been shut down by the Screen Actors Guild strike. But if a production happens to be independent, it can receive a waiver that will allow it to continue filming and its actors will continue working, even if they’re SAG members. Deadline and Variety report that some of the projects that have received SAG waivers include the Sam Raimi-produced horror film Don’t Move, the Mel Gibson / Mark Wahlberg thriller Flight Risk, the thriller The Watchers, and Hannibal TV series creator Bryan Fuller’s Dust Bunny, starring Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver.

Hollywood’s historic double strike has shut down the vast majority of productions across the country but not all of them.
On Tuesday, SAG-AFTRA approved certain productions that aren’t affiliated with any of the struck studios or streamers to keep filming. The list includes David Lowery’s Mother Mary and Rebel Wilson comedy Bride Hard.
Independent productions not affiliated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers members can apply for waivers from SAG-AFTRA to continue production, the union stated. The waivers mostly apply to independent projects, though Biblical project The Chosen was granted one to finish filming its fourth season even though Lionsgate has distribution rights. Members can work on these shoots without being in violation of the strike order.
To be granted a waiver, a production must sign an interim agreement that “would largely be conformed to the AMPTP agreement on a going-forward basis once the membership ratifies successor agreements,...
