After traditional funding models fell through, the film was entirely self financed at the last minute by Federgreen's father-in-law, Marvin Waxman due to his belief in the director and film.
Many of the cast members were asked to participate in a virtual table read of the script during May of 2020. They quickly fell in love with the story and have stayed attached to the project since that day.
Because of the smaller budget of the film, there weren't the usual amenities that come with most film productions. There were no specialized trailers for talent or crew. The cast had a small green room set up in a recreational room on one side of the house. The production office was in the basement of the house, across from it was the laundry room where the costume department was set up. The camera and grip team occupied the entertainment room. The art department moved room-to-room depending on the needs of the production. Meanwhile hair and make up was set up in the garage which also doubled as the lunch room for the production team. The cast and crew worked closely together and became a true family during the making of the film.
Home Free is a long standing passion project for Director Avi Federgreen; having first read the script in May of 2015, he spent several years in development trying to get the film off the ground.
The main location of the film (the Homur House) belongs to actress Michelle Nolden (Rain) and her husband, and executive producer Chris Szarka. They immediately volunteered their house following the virtual table read in May of 2020. Production took over their residence for nearly two months while they continued to live in the upper half of the home. The bulk of the film was entirely filmed on their property with one other location being only minutes away from the home. The film was shot just outside of Paris, Ontario, Canada.
