Basically a monologue

Just when I thought I was working out some kind of trajectory from Ari Aster's short films to his feature films, Basically comes along and feels like a massive curveball. This one's quite different from most of the other things he's made. And it's also surprising to compare to Munchausen from the year before, because that one had no dialogue, and then Basically is essentially nothing but one extended monologue from a dissatisfied young woman who lives a life of wealth and extravagance but still has a bunch to complain about.

This is perhaps the short film I'd least want to see Aster adapt into a feature film, but it offered enough to kind of work as a short film. There are a couple of funny moments here and there, and the unique structure/presentation makes it at least interesting. Not one I loved or understood, but there's something here, so I don't regret watching it.

Perfect

Very brisk, humorous and intelligent film, artistically perfectly done.

a lighter version of Chanel Oberlin

It's more comedic than dark-humored, and I LIIIIVE for it.
