The Shepherd and the Bear

1 review
9/10

No easy solution for a complex problem.

If you like your issues black or white this may not be the film for you. On the other hand, go see the film with friends and you'll be guaranteed hours of animated discussions around a drink afterwards. It's that sort of film.

Told in beautiful shots of mountain landscapes and unintrusive portraits of the protagonists, the film tells us a story of how the reintroduction of bears in the Pyrenees affects local villagers, regional authorities and is used by some unsavoury characters to stir up trouble. There are bears, but this more about the people who share the mountains with the bears. One thing that you will definitely take from the film is a reminder that complex issues don't tend to have easy answers.

The film is beautiful and intelligent in equal measure. The visible bond between the director and all the characters is visibly based on high level of trust. At moments you have to remind yourself that Yves, the shepherd is not a trained actor!

Special mention also for the beautiful soundtrack and the production/editing.
