Movies are a love language. When you stop to think about it, it’s a grand gesture for hundreds of people to put years of effort, time, and sacrifice into making something for you. On a tangential level, to crib from Roger Ebert’s wise words, movies are an “empathy machine.” We’re allowed to feel some sense of, if not love, then at least compassionate understanding. I’d argue this ability to feel empathy is not limited by genre or subgenre. This is not to say that every movie invites empathy, but rather that it can be found regardless of the aspects that make up the genre.
And yes, that even includes what Ebert called “Dead Teenager Movies,” more commonly known as the slasher film. As recent entries in the subgenre have proven, there’s plenty of compassion to be squeezed from the slasher genre as well. You may...

His character may have been killed off a couple years back but that doesn’t seem to matter in this franchise anymore. Deadline reports that David Arquette has joined Scream 7!
David Arquette’s Dewey Riley was infamously killed off in Scream back in 2022, and for what it’s worth, Deadline notes that Arquette is indeed playing Dewey in Scream 7.
How the hell is Arquette back as Dewey, Matthew Lillard back as Stu Macher, and Scott Foley back as Roman Bridger? Scream 7 is getting stranger and stranger by the week…
Deadline notes, “The trio played characters who died in the franchise and are returning in a surprise way. Details regarding how [Arquette] comes back and the film’s plot are currently under wraps.” The seventh installment will release in theaters on February 27, 2026.

Every horror film needs a good boogeyman, and the monstrous maniac at the centre of Heart Eyes is a great one. Striking every Valentine’s Day, the Heart Eyes Killer (the police and media dub him Hek) kills only couples, his huge, heart-shaped peepers doubling as night vision goggles (cue Silence Of The Lambs-y pov shots but bathed in red) and his weapon of choice a crossbow that fires deadly cupid’s arrows. He provides a fantastic nemesis in Josh Ruben’s (Werewolves Within) tremendously knowing, fun romp that mashes up romcoms and horror slasher movies and playfully decides the two genres have more in common than you think.
The set-up is pure romcom fluff, featuring every trope in the book (with a pink cover); good looking people in high-end jobs, meet-cutes over mixed up coffee orders, knocking their heads together bending down, speaking over each other (“no you go...

There isn’t a single rough surface in Heart Eyes. Even the titular serial killer’s dirty, sweaty mask has been aged to a lovely patina—Ooh, is that cowhide?—and outfitted with a set of nifty neon heart-shaped night-vision goggles straight out of a Purge movie. The settings are artificial,...

Ever since the genre was created, the “meet cute” has been a staple of romantic comedies. So it makes sense that in the new “romantic comedy horror film” from director Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within), couples should die cute. Well, not cute exactly, unless you think of spears going through eyeballs or heads being crushed into bloody pulp as cute. Of course, for the target audience of Heart Eyes, that’s exactly what they are. They relish the gruesome deaths, the more graphic the better, the way audiences used to relish spectacular production numbers in musicals.
If movie musicals had their heyday in the 1930s and ‘40s, the equivalent for slasher movies was the 1980s. Like the Scream franchise, which it closely resembles, Heart Eyes both pays homage to and parodies its inspirations, which, considering that it’s set on Valentine’s Day, must include My Bloody Valentine (the 1981 original, of course,...

There’s often a willingness to overcategorize middling slashers as horror comedies. However, balancing true horror with legitimate laughs is far more challenging. However, Heart Eyes pulls off the rare combo. Not only does it deliver legitimate laughs, easily showcasing itself as one of the funniest studio films in recent memory, but it’s got a mean streak few films possess. With plenty of gore and slasher frights, it’s an early standout for horror in 2025.

Fresh off the news that Scream 3 star Scott Foley has joined the cast of Scream 7, Deadline has reported the massive news that Matthew Lillard is also returning to the franchise.
Lillard has made no secret of the fact in recent years that he believes Stu Macher is still alive, and that he’d love to make his return to the Scream franchise. At this time we can’t tell if Lillard is playing Stu in Scream 7 or the film is taking a unique approach to bringing back past actors from the saga, but a post from Lillard on Instagram tonight suggests Stu is very much alive.
Check out Lillard’s post below and start your speculating.

As the cast for Scream 7 continues to grow with filming now underway, a new puzzling addition has just been announced. Deadline reports that Scream 3 actor Scott Foley has joined the cast.
The seventh installment is set to release in theaters on February 27, 2026.
Naturally, character details are under wraps at this point, but Foley previously played Roman Bridger, the half-brother of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who was revealed to be Ghostface in Scream 3. Roman didn’t survive the events of the third entry, so start speculating now whether Roman will get resurrected in some way or whether Foley’s casting hints toward a more meta approach in the upcoming sequel.
The only plot detail released so far is that the seventh installment is expected to return the focus to Sidney Prescott and her family. If Foley does wind up reprising Roman Bridger, that further supports Scream 7 as a Prescott family affair.

The cast for Scream 7 continues to grow with filming now underway, and Deadline reports this afternoon that Mark Consuelos (“Riverdale”) is the latest actor to come on board.
“Details regarding the film’s plot and who Consuelos will play are under wraps,” Deadline notes.

Scream 7 marks the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, with Jasmin Savoy Brown (“Yellowjackets”) returning as Mindy Meeks-Martin and Mason Gooding also coming back to play Chad Meeks-Martin, Mindy’s twin brother.
The seventh installment is expected to bring the focus back onto Sidney and her family.
The announced cast for Scream 7 also includes Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Sam Rechner (The Fabelmans), Asa Germann (“The Boys”), Anna Camp (“Hysteria!), and Isabel May (“1883”). Another member of the core four’s fate has been decided as Jasmin Savoy Brown will officially be returning to Scream 7 to reprise her role as Mindy Meeks-Martin, a part that she played during the last two films, all according to Variety. Brown’s deal comes following the reveal that Mason Gooding, who plays her character's twin brother, would be returning to reprise his role as Chad Meeks-Martin. The duo join the previously announced Neve Campbell, who will jump back into the role of Sidney Prescott after sitting out the sixth film, with a slew of new cast members joining the ensemble. Included in the lineup of newbies is Asa Germann (Gen V), Celeste O'Connor (Madame Web), Mckenna Grace (A Friend of the Family), Isabel May (1883), and most recently, Joel McHale (It's a Wonderful Knife).

Filming is currently underway on Scream 7 in Atlanta, which means the cast only continues to grow. The latest addition is another familiar face: Variety reports that Jasmin Savoy Brown (“Yellowjackets”) will officially return as Mindy Meeks-Martin.
Brown joins previously announced cast member Mason Gooding, who plays Chad Meeks-Martin, Mindy’s twin brother. The Meeks-Martin twins, introduced in Scream (2022) are the niece and nephew of the original Scream character Randy Meeks (played by Jamie Kennedy).
The Meeks-Martin twins survived the events of Scream VI, but barely, with Brown’s Mindy closing out the film with a post-credit scene humorously taking a jab at post-credit scenes.
Scream 7 marks the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers, and Roger L. Jackson as the voice of Ghostface.
Plot details are being kept under wraps still, but the seventh installment is expected to bring the focus back onto Sidney and her family.

The "Scream" franchise is always throwing a curveball or two at fans with every installment, but it's safe to say this newest casting report is taking things to an even more confusing extreme. Despite getting a fresh and modernized update starting with 2022's annoyingly-titled "Scream" (which was actually the fifth movie in the property) and continuing with "Scream VI," the future of the horror brand has remained somewhat up in the air following the twin departures of new leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. Of course, that hasn't stopped Paramount from attempting to forge on ahead anyway with these proven money-making sequels by doubling down on nostalgia, bringing back Neve Campbell's final girl Sidney Prescott for "Scream 7" and even roping in original architect/writer Kevin Williamson as director, too.
Now, however, the latest twist in this saga is raising a lot more questions than answers for fans.

Sidney Prescott will be married in Scream 7, but not to Patrick Dempsey‘s Detective Mark Kincaid from Scream 3, as fans have speculated.
Deadline reports that Joel McHale has been cast as the final girl’s husband, Mark Evans.
Currently in production in Atlanta, Scream 7 sees the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney, Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers, Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin, and Roger L. Jackson as the voice of Ghostface.
Isabel May plays Sidney’s daughter. The cast also includes Celeste O’Connor, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Asa Germann, and Anna Camp.
Kevin Williamson, writer of the original Scream as well as Scream 2 and Scream 4, is directing the latest installment from a script by Guy Busick, who co-wrote Scream 5 and Scream 6.

The Scream franchise is sort of rebuilding itself again after a not-so-amicable parting with Melissa Barrera and the exit of Jenna Ortega, the on-screen sister duo that helped revitalize the series. After those high-profile exits, suddenly money freed up in the budget for the high-profile re-entry of Neve Campbell, the series' longtime final girl.

While it might not seem very Christmas-y, Robert Eggers’ horror remake “Nosferatu” does partly take place at Christmas, which is a very unhappy holiday for all involved. And since the movie opened on Dec. 25, you can also spend your own Christmas break watching it.
Naturally, horror and holidays go together like, well… The Grinch and the town of Whoville. Here’s a few of the better genre offerings with maximum — and frightfully merry — mayhem.
Plus, there’s no end of killer Santa movies, including “Violent Night” with David Harbour and one where a robotic Santa run amok, if those are more to your liking. But for now, check out our list, below:

The last decade has been ripe with twists on the classic horror film genre. Most recently, this has taken the form of mascot horror, a subgenre that essentially turns what could be childhood delight into a source of terror. Popular mascot horror films from the past few years have included Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, Five Nights at Freddy's, and the upcoming films Bambi: The Reckoning and Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare. While there are still plenty of conventional horror films being made, audiences are seeming to respond well to those that twist a typically jovial topic into something sinister.
In addition to mascot horror, another growingly popular trope is the Christmas horror film. This is exemplified in several recent films, such as Mean One, which combines mascot and holiday horror. 2024 saw the release of Terrifier 3, a threequel which put Art the Clown in a Christmas setting. A sense of déjà vu is inevitable when watching Hanna MacPherson’s Time Cut. Just like Totally Killer, a movie that came out only a year ago, this new slasher flings a final girl to the distant past so that she can solve a loved one’s murder. Yes, Time Cut was technically announced first, but the movie has the misfortune of being released later rather than sooner. And today, in an age where nostalgia bait runs rampant, the plot already feels outdated.
While the ‘80s and ‘90s tend to be the go-to destinations in these kinds of movies, Time Cut takes us back to the less visited early-aughts. 2003, to be exact. Madison Bailey’s character Lucy realizes her new surroundings like any teen time traveler might nowadays: by song. In this needle dropper set to Hilary Duff’s “So Yesterday,” the movie rolls out a parade of the decade’s greatest fashion don’ts.

Ask any baby and they’ll tell you, nothing beats a good formula. When you’ve got a recipe for success, it makes sense to keep replicating it. At least until it stops working.
Which brings me to screenwriter Michael Kennedy, whose last three scripts have been slasher movies with an elevator-friendly pitch, combining the familiar tropes of a popular horror genre with the familiar tropes of a popular movie. The rightly acclaimed “Freaky,” co-written by Christopher Landon, took the plot of “Freaky Friday” and asked “What if it was a slasher?” The unfairly overlooked “It’s a Wonderful Knife” took the plot of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and asked “What if it was a slasher?”

For Millennials, Time Cut opens with perhaps the scariest cinematic moment of the year. For here is a slasher dealing in nostalgia for a bygone era, a time so long ago that you can now pointedly revive its fashion and music and cultural references as a wink-nudge counterpoint to the present day. That particular era? 2003. Time really does come for us all.
While the text card “April 13 2003” is likely to invoke more terror than anything else in the film, Time Cut remains a cheap and just-about-cheerful-enough 91-minute romp, with one or two interesting ideas among all the throwback references. This is the latest in the burgeoning ‘slash-up’ genre, taking the masked-killer horror trope and smashing it into another subgenre – and it comes with a script co-penned by one of the pioneers of the movement, Michael Kennedy, who co-wrote body-swap slasher Freaky, and the festive It’s A Wonderful Knife. Even if you’re not a Halloween person, October means spooky season. It feels like every brand, store, — and yes, every streamer, finds ways to incorporate themes of haunting and horror. Disney+ started early, with the September premiere of “Agatha All Along,” which will air new episodes for the next several weeks. In October, the streamer will debut “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” an expansion of the popular Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” which aired from 2007 to 2012.
And of course Hulu has “Huluween,” a celebration of the scariest titles either premiering on the streamer for the first time or simply highlighted from its existing library. That includes films like “Late Night with the Devil,” the series “Reginald the Vampire,” FX’s “American Horror Stories”, a Halloween specials from “Family Guy” and “Solar Opposites,” a docuseries on witch hunting, and much more.

Horror fans, we're happy to report that the upcoming Spyglass horror rom-com Heart Eyes finally has a theatrical release date. Unfortunately, the movie won't be coming out this year, which was expected since production just recently wrapped in New Zealand in July. The film is currently in post-production. However, Sony will be releasing this movie in theaters early next year. Feb. 7, 2025, to be exact. Don't forget to save the date!
Heart Eyes is described as a Valentine's Day slasher. Josh Ruben directed the film from a screenplay co-written by Phillip Murphy (Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard), Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy.
Taking place in Seattle, Washington, Heart Eyes follows a pair of co-workers working overtime at their job during Valentine's Day. But things take a turn for the worse when an infamous couple-hunting murderer known as the "Heart Eyes Killer" shows up at their job and mistakes them for a couple.

February 14th is a Friday in 2025, so that would seem to be the perfect choice of release date for a horror romantic comedy that’s set on Valentine’s Day, which is what the movie Heart Eyes is. But the February 14th release date has already been taken by Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World and Paramount’s Smurfs animated movie… so Sony Pictures has chosen to release Heart Eyes on February 7th. Its competition on that date is the Universal action movie With Love, starring Ke Huy Quan.
Coming our way from Josh Ruben, the director of Werewolves Within and Scare Me, Heart Eyes was scripted by Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon, Landon’s Freaky collaborator Michael Kennedy (who also wrote It’s a Wonderful Knife), and Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard). The first "V/H/S" movie was released in 2012, which was actually four full years before the last manufacturers of VCRs, Funai Electric, finally halted production on the medium.
VHS was, for those of a certain age, a seminal and ubiquitous technology. Prior to VHS, the only way to see certain cinematic classics was either to go to a repertory theater (which used to be far more common) and see it on the big screen (requiring a well-curated arthouse in your town) or to wait for something to broadcast on network TV (which was often edited for content or time). With the advent of VHS, movies were on-demand for the first time. One could rent their movies from a local video store and watch them at their leisure. A new sci-fi slasher horror outing from Netflix could make for the perfect viewing this spooky season. The streaming giant has now announced that the horror flick, titled Time Cut, will land on the platform just in time for Halloween on October 30, 2024, with the story mashing together the time travel shenanigans of Back to the Future with the slasher frights of Scream for a terrifying, timey-wimey delight.
Directed by Hannah MacPherson, who is best known for the mystery thriller T@gged and the fantasty drama series School Spirits, MacPherson co-wrote Time Cut alongside the mind behind 2020s body-swap horror flick Freaky and last years Christmas horror comedy outing It's a Wonderful Knife, Michael Kennedy.
You can check out the enticing (if brief) logline for Time Cut below.

Two stars from two very popular Netflix teen shows will be starring together in a new slasher for the streamer. We're talking about Outer Banks star Madison Bailey and Ginny & Georgia's Antonia Gentry. The horror movie is called Time Cut, and it's coming to Netflix this fall. The exact release date is Oct. 30, 2024, just one day before Halloween.
We first learned of this film back in May 2021. It was announced that To All the Boys producer Ace Entertainment would be making a YA movie called Time Cut and that it would star Bailey and Gentry. Hannah Macpherson was announced as the director, and Michael Kennedy and Sono Patel were revealed to be writing the script. However, Patel would later drop out of the movie, and Macpherson took over as co-writer. The film was also described as being Back to the Future (1985) meets Scream (1996).

Joel McHale, a lead for all six seasons of the show Community, has provided an update on the long-awaited movie, which is now likely delayed to mid-to-late 2025 or early 2026. Despite previous reports and social media problems, Joel McHale blames his schedule for the delay, not Donald Glover. The movie is completely financed though. Most of the original cast, except Chevy Chase, will return for the film.
The anticipated Community movie has been given the green light... now, it's just a matter of filming it. During a recent interview with GQ, Joel McHale provided a timeline for production. While Community fans are eager to see the beloved sitcom fulfill its "six seasons and a movie" prophecy, we'll be waiting a bit longer, either near the last quarter of 2025 or early 2026. There were hopes the movie would go into production this year, but McHale shares that won't happen:
"Oh, well, it hasn't been shot yet.

Horror movies set at Christmas are nothing new, from classics such as Gremlins and Black Christmas to more recent entries like Christmas Bloody Christmas and It's A Wonderful Knife. Combining a snowy setting with gruesome kills is essential for getting horror fans into the festive spirit. There's Something in the Barn is the latest addition in this Christmas horror catalog (hitting Netflix three months after the holiday but still securing a place in the streamer's top 10 most-watched movies), following an American family who have relocated to Norway during the festive season only to find their barn is home to a creature from Norwegian folklore.
