An Adam Sandler franchise has taken over a major streaming chart. Sandler is a well-known comic actor who first rose to prominence as a Saturday Night Live cast member. His tenure lasted from 1990 to 1995 and included iconic sketches such as "Opera Man" and "Pepper Boy." Over the course of his career, he has so far been nominated for five Emmys, four of which were for performances on SNL, and one Golden Globe.

Many Adam Sandler movies have been financially successful in spite of earning dismal scores on Rotten Tomatoes. This includes Click ($237.7 million with a 34% score), Just Go with It ($214 million with 19%), 50 First Dates ($198.5 million with 45%) and Big Daddy ($234.8 million with 39%). However, he has also appeared in well-respected dramas such as Uncut Gems (91%) and Punch-Drunk Love (79%), the latter of which earned him his Golden Globe nomination, as well as better-received comedies like The Wedding Singer (72%).

When Covid-19 happened, I think many of us had the same thought at some point: what if this became our new normal? What if life was supposed to be like this, staying at home, quarantined, constantly worried about catching the virus, fearing for our loved ones? It was a terrible time, and many lost so much. The film Lazareth revolves around this idea as it follows Aunt Lee and her two nieces, Maeve and Imogen, who have lived with her ever since their mother died from the virus. After the tragic outbreak of the virus, many people lost their lives, and then, ten years passed, and they still lived in isolation in the house called Lazareth, which was deep in the jungle outside of town. They believe the virus might still be out there, so they haven’t interacted with anyone in a decade as they fear of being contaminated.

A remote cabin stands as a lone sanctuary, sheltering three women from the ravaged world outside. So begins Lazareth, the new post-apocalyptic thriller from writer-director Alec Tibaldi. When a deadly global pandemic overwhelms society, Lee fights relentlessly to keep her two young nieces safe within the protective walls of their secluded forest home. Camila Mendes and Madelyn Cline have reportedly been cast to portray two of the leads in 2025s I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot (per Deadline). Mendes, who is best known for her work on the television series Riverdale, and the Outer Banks Cline will reportedly join Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King in the horror movie reimagining. Judd spoke with us about the different interpretations of Lazareth, and Judd warmly described meeting Pidgeon and Douglas in her "tiny home on set" in an Oregon nature preserve. Lazareth is a new thriller that has enticed in an actor who is no stranger to the genre in Ashley Judd, and to mark the release of the film, we had the pleasure in speaking to her, alongside her younger co-star Asher Angel.

We discuss the themes of the film, and the empowering feminist undercurrent, as well as how it connects to the pandemic, while Judd speaks very candidly about offering advice and guidance to the younger actresses on set, something she goes on to tell she didn’t receive herself. We also speak to Angel about his role in the DC Universe in Shazam!, and he speaks about balancing his film with his music work, and why a certain Justin Timberlake remains an inspiration. Apocalyptic films with a minuscule focus, like Lazareth, are a dime a dozen. Filmmakers like Alec Tibaldi are more interested in microcosmic societal reactions than global or national pandemonium (theyre also cheaper to produce). Lazareth resembles countless copycats: pioneer lifestyles, woodland isolation, and the threat of transmittable sickness. Tibaldis vision is narrow and stripped down, finding worry in a sanctuary under attack, but also tedium and monotony as this scrawny doomsday aside follows in footsteps tamped nearly flat.

Asher Angel is open to returning to Shazam! only if Zachary Levi is also along for the ride. Angel played the young Billy Batson, who turns into the adult superhero Shazam, portrayed by Levi.

In an interview with Comic Book Movie to promote his upcoming movie Lazareth, Angel discussed the possibility of returning to the world of superheroes, specifically Shazam!. The actor insisted he would only return to play the character in tandem with Levi, even if some fans wanted to see him as the adult version of the character. "I'd always be open to going back and playing Billy Batson," he said. "I'd never want to take Zach's place because we're in this together. If there are any other characters out there in the future, I'd also be open to that. I'm pretty open! There's a time and a place, and it'll happen."

But with the failed DC movies, the fate of several movies has been hazy, including Asher Angel’s Shazam 2.

Gunn’s tenure in DC has started, but the beginning of his new version of DC Universe is yet to roll out, which will officially begin with his upcoming movie Superman. Failure of the recent DC flops was a huge question mark on several heroes’ return— Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, Ezra Miller’s The Flash, and Zachary Levi’s Shazam 2. But with Gunn’s takeover, the potential comeback has been slim to none.

The eerie production design adds style to the film, and the forest setting is used well. Contrived plot points detracts from the film's believability, stretching common sense.

A fierce woman protects her nieces on a remote homestead in the aftermath of an apocalyptic virus. Lazareth takes an intimate and nuanced view of the worst-case scenario with moderate success. The characters' seclusion forces a reckoning when outsiders interrupt a carefully crafted isolation. How do you react to strangers when curiosity and lust overcomes fear? The pieces don't quite fit together from a common sense and believability standpoint, but the human drama central to the narrative is fascinating to behold. Willing suspension of disbelief goes a long way here.

2023 was a rough year for superhero movies. Both Marvel Studios and Warner Bros.' Dceu struggled to deliver movies which resonated with fans and filmgoers, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods failed to take flight when it opened last March.

Reviews were split rather than outright negative, but the movie still only grossed $134 million worldwide. It came as a shock after the success of 2019's Shazam!, and the character's future is now uncertain with DC Studios set to reboot the Dcu beginning with 2025's Superman.
