Chinese sales and distribution company Times Vision has brought two new titles to Cannes this year, including “Shanghai Fortress,” a big-budget summer sci-fi blockbuster that producers hope will replicate the success of “The Wandering Earth.” Its other film at the Marche is family drama “Looking Up.”
“Shanghai Fortress” stars Taiwanese actress Shu Qi and Chinese idol Lu Han, one of the country’s highest-paid celebrities, who rose to fame as a member of the South Korean boy band Exo. It is expected to debut in early August, with China Film Group as the primary distributor.
Adapted from a popular sci-fi novel by writer Jiang Nan, the futuristic romance was produced by Hs Entertainment Group Inc. The firm was behind the 2013 romantic comedy “So Young,” the directorial debut of actress Vicky Zhao Wei and the 2017 TV series “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” a palace drama.

Prominent Chinese actress Zhao Wei (aka Vicki Zhao) has been banned for five years from holding senior positions in any listed company in China. The ruling was made by the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Tuesday.
The punishment relates to the failed 2016 takeover bid announced by Tibet Longwei, a company controlled by Zhao and her husband, Huang Youlong, for 29% of Zhejiang Wanija. The pair were found to have “disrupted market order” and to have benefited from a “celebrity effect” when they announced their bid, but did not have the financial resources to go through with it.
The China Securities Regulatory Commission had previously punished the pair with a five-year ban from trading on the Shanghai market and a $170,000 (RMB1.2 million) fine for the same offense. The latest, additional penalty reflects their release of false information during the bid.

‘Secret Superstar’
In the lull before Chinese New Year which starts on Feb 16 this year, the week of Jan 29-Feb 4 became the quietest since last November. The new releases failed to make much of an impression, leaving holdovers Secret Superstar and Maze Runner: The Death Cure in lead positions.
Aamir Khan’s coming-of-age musical retained the No.1 spot for two straight weeks, adding $26m for a 17-day total of $95.9m, which was almost half of Dangal’s final gross. It’s now the top grossing foreign film in 2018, ahead of Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, Maze Runner: The Death Cure and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Fox’s young adult adventure Maze Runner: The Death Cure ranked second with $16.2m for $40.5m after 10 days. This third installment has surpassed its previous two predecessors, breaking a new record...

Madonna Shocks the world in this highly personal and daring interview where she really holds nothing back in a special essay that she penned for the magazine. From the challenges she faced to the boundaries she broke and the constant struggles she endured, you won’t believe what she had to say!
Before there was Lady Gaga, we had one of the most controversial artists of pop music — Madonna. In Harper’s Bazaar magazine, the icon herself penned an essay revealing her struggles of making it in the harsh music business and the criticism that is still surrounding the artist. Dressed in black leather designs and bondage-like ensembles, all we can ever say is — ‘it’s Madonna!’
Madonna Raped At Knifepoint:
In the mag, (on newsstands on Oct. 22), Madonna paints a harsh, (but fiercely real), picture of her first time in the’big city’ alone. “This wasn’t anything I prepared for in Rochester,...

“So Young” sees Chinese actress Zhao Wei stepping behind the camera to make her directorial debut, backed by veteran producer Stanley Kwan (“Rouge”, “Centre Stage”). For her first outing as helmer, the popular “Red Cliff” and “Painted Skin: The Resurrection” star chose to adapt a novel by Xin Yiwu, which follows a collection of friends as they experience love and loss at college and then again in later life. A surprise smash hit at the domestic box office (and recently having been chosen to screen at the 2013 London Film Festival), the film has a top ensemble cast of appropriately youthful talent, headed by Yang Zishan (“In Case of Love”), Mark Chao (“Caught in the Web”) and singer Han Geng (“My Kingdom”). The film begins in the mid-1990s, with Yang Zishan as Zheng Wei, a small town girl who heads to a big city university with hopes of reuniting with...

Hot Toys have revealed the third figure from their Man of Steel line and he’s none other than General Zod. The Kryptonian costume design for Mos was nothing short of brilliant, fusing medieval armor with a highly advanced alien technology created an imposing threat equaling the power of Zod and his army. Since Superman was first revealed I’ve been eagerly anticipating the reveal of Zod, and even though I was a bit disappointed when Jor-El was revealed first sans his armor, I am happy to say that the wait for Zod was more than worth it. Not to mention it’s very nice to see Hot Toys exploring other armored characters not named Iron Man. Retailing between $230-$240 Zod isn’t cheap, but that seems to be the new standard for Hot Toys releases. Good or bad, these figures keep rising and rising in price. As always Sideshow...

Tsui Hark's first Detetive Dee film, 2010's Mystery of the Phantom Flame proved a surprisingly effective combination of period martial arts, Sherlock Holmes-esque sleuthing and fantasy adventure. Three years later the Hong Kong veteran is back with a 3D prequel, the rather comically titled Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon. Andy Lau has handed over the mantle of the titular snoop to Taiwanese hearthrob Mark Chao (Monga, So Young) and is joined by Angelababy and Feng Shao Feng. We've seen plenty of stills, but precious little of the film itself so far, and this new teaser expands only slightly on the last, boasting ominous underwater growling, fairly dodgy CGI galleons and still no sign of Detective Dee himself. The film opens in Hong Kong...

While one giant robot movie is rounding out a disappointing opening weekend, another continues to announce cast members a year ahead of its own release. This morning, Michael Bay welcomed Asian superstar Han Geng into the fold of Transformers 4, in which he’ll join a cast consisting of Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Nicola Peltz, Kelsey Grammar, Sophia Myles and fellow China-based actress Li Bingbing. Han is a singer and actor who can be seen heading up his country’s second highest-grossing domestic release of 2013, So Young (it’s neck and neck with top-grossing Hollywood import, Iron Man 3, and both are now in the top ten of all time there). To give you an idea of how popular he is, just peruse YouTube’s many abridged yet still lengthy versions of the college drama featuring only Han’s scenes. Before becoming a movie star, Han got his start as a member of the South Korean boy...

Paramount is working closely with China in a production deal they set up for Transformers 4, meaning they'll be filming over in the country and it will play some role in the film's story. With filming currently underway for the film, we got word earlier that Han Geng has been added to the cast. Come inside for all the details.
Paramount sent us word just a bit ago that Han Geng, and Asian superstar, has been added to the cast of Transformers 4, though they haven't specified what role he'll be playing, nor how major his character might be. So far, there's not been much in the way of information on the actual plot of the film (crazy considering, this franchise hasn't been known for it's veil of secrecy). All eyes were on Madonna at the screening for the Mdna Tour Documentary in New York City, when she showed up in a 1930′s getup! Madonna has never held back when it comes to expressing herself and we are totally in love with her latest look!
On June 18, Madonna, 54, went to the premiere of her Mdna Tour Documentary in NYC and looked fabulous in a black and white women’s tuxedo, in honor of her idol, the popular actress Marlene Dietrich. Madonna completed the classic look with a top hat and a white bow tie. Her hair is curled and pinned up at just above shoulder length. Madonna’s makeup artist Sammy H. Mourabit helped her achieve this glamorous look, inspired by Marlene’s iconic role in the 1930′s movie Morocco.
