Oh Jung-se, Lee Yoo-mi, and Woo Do-Hwan in Mr. Plankton (2024)

Woo Do-Hwan is electric

We learn how this Kdrama would end in the first 10 minutes, still it came it was a gut punch nevertheless. Woo Do-hwan plays the abandoned child/cynical man with grace and emotional honesty. His soulmate, played by Lee Yoo-mi, suffers and delights in turns as he steals her away from her hard-won opportunity to belong to a well-off family whose cheobol son she charmed. But their bad luck follows them like their shadows on a sunny day.

Beautifully written and acted. The misfortunes they have overcome and the misfortunes they have yet to face bring them into contact with deadly thugs, a judge-y mother-in-law-to-be, a hapless minion, and others who con and disappoint but never succeed in ruining their lives.

The head-scratcher of a title is explained in a lovely, touching scene that reveals just how deeply Woo Do-hwan's character feels, yearns and denies.

Funny (really), twisty, touching, graceful and ultimately life-affirming. Have kleenex handy. Very high production value and A-list cast make this extraordinary, too.

Ktrauma In This Year...

Ktrauma in this year. However, this kdrama is very good to watch and very enjoyable.

The story, comedy, love, sadness, trauma, wounds in this Kdrama are written and shown very well, as well as the acting of Woo Do Hwan and Lee You Mi which is so good, detailed, looks real, and until I feel the emotions and feelings. Woo Do Hwan and Lee You Mi acting is very good and feels very real, the comedy is so fitting and not too cheesy, the presentation is entertaining and fun, and the love story is so sweet and tragic is the attraction of this kdrama. So my rating is 9/10. I think the 9/10 rating that I gave to this kdrama is because this kdrama is very good and worth watching!

This Kdrama is recommended for those who want to laugh very hard and then cry very hard. I'm sure, people will continue to discuss this kdrama because of the story and ending that so... curious about the ending? So watch it first and you will know how the ending is! Don't worry! This kdrama will have a happy ending. Very highly recommended to watch! You have to watch it!

Yet another excellent kdrama

I don't know how they do it, but you have to hand it to them, they continue to make the best dramas in Korea with the best writers, actors, directors & cinematographers. Hats off to them.

If I tell you you'll cry buckets, I won't be spoiling anything. The first scene is the ending scene. You know what you're going to get and no amount of willing it not to happen is going to stop it happening.

Be warned, your heart will be broken, you'll curse at the unfairness of life but you'll love that these characters, whether abandoned, mistreated or simply lonely can find family, love and support with each other.

The cast is excellent. Not a single offbeat role. The ML & FL give this drama their all and deserve the plaudits coming their way & a special mention to the location manager and cinematographer. The series was a treat for the eyes.

Loved this despite the heartache.

Perhaps this year's K-trauma

South Korea are masters at delving into emotions and relationships between people, and when they succeed, as in this series, no one stands next to them.

The series is honest and vulnerable about how we live with trauma, which survival strategies we use and how we protect ourselves.

The main characters are two young adults who fill the entire series with their stormy, charming and tragic lives. Woo Do-hwan and Lee Yoo-mi have a good chemistry, and she rises against his masculine radiance, something not everyone can master, I think.

The balance between them is fine, and intensity and depth come across in a touching way. The film jumps a bit in time, and at the beginning the communication and behavior between the main characters was a bit uncomfortable. This was quickly cleared up because they know each other well from before, and when they meet again they continue roughly where they previously left off. But now life has become even more complicated for both of them.

The series is bittersweet and with humor, hope and action. Love is stronger than death, and there is nice symbolism. Mr. Plankton says that plankton is at the bottom of the food chain - at the lowest level in the ocean, and I thought about how much a human can endure before we burst. Mr. Plankton thinks of the bonds of heaven, and I can feel in my heart the longing and fear that lies behind it.

It is good that obvious clichés are avoided and that 30-year-olds dont behave like innocent teenagers. Certain scenes could have been shorter, but it still gets a 10 because the story and authenticity triumph throughout the series.

Once again: Cheers South Korea, keep making these amazing series that take us on adventures and grip our hearts. Thanks to everyone behind the production.

Sometimes, when misfortune meets misfortune, it can create a moment of happiness.

I recently watched a fantastic series where unique characters tell a powerful story. Rather than simply portraying the beauty of youth, this work realistically captures the pain and losses that come with it. While I laughed, I also felt the underlying tension brought on by heavy themes, and I noticed myself wanting to focus on the characters' smiles while avoiding the struggles behind them. As I learned more about each character's wounds and backstory, I realized that every viewer would likely have a different favorite to root for. Youth is often challenging, with much to lose, but looking back, we smile at the thought of having endured those times. This series is filled with stories that evoke a deep empathy for youth. I wouldn't want to spoil even the smallest detail - I highly recommend experiencing it from the beginning. Don't miss it.

Top quality production and top quality story

I have watched so many boring Kdramas this past year and this show grabbed me on the first episode and held me for the entire ride. The pace is perfect and the production value was amazing. I was so engaged to the action scenes, the visual effects, and the beautiful cinematography highlighting the provinces. I thought this was going to a be a rom-com with a great ML, but instead some veteran supporting actors stepped up and brought tons of comedic relief to an emotional story. The massively under-appreciated Oh Jung Se made you laugh, cry, and cheer. I have always been a fan of the ML, but this was his best role yet. Dripping with charisma and his "Bloodhounds" physique, Woo Do Hwan brought his charms and that smile. One of the best elements was the smiles. There are a lot of depressing kdramas where the main actors barely crack a smile the entire series. Where there is love, there is joy, and this show had so many kids of deep warm love, joy and smiles. I will definitely put this on the rewatch list. Truly one of the most beautiful and high quality kdramas I have ever seen. It has a lot of "It is ok to not be ok" vibes, but this surpassed that show in pace and writing.

The First 5 episodes were BRILLIANT but the rest just MEEEH!

This comedy-drama centers around themes of love and family, sprinkled with adventure and humor, creating a refreshing twist on typical Korean dramas. The first five episodes delivered these elements brilliantly, drawing viewers into a unique storyline that felt both heartfelt and funny.

However, the final five episodes sadly took a different turn. Many scenes felt repetitive, lost in nonsensical plot points, and overly saturated with romance, diluting the original charm of the series. What started as a fresh comedy-adventure ended up leaning heavily on the familiar tropes of Korean romantic dramas, missing out on its own potential.

This show could have stood out as a meaningful, genre-consistent series, but instead, it closed with too many empty, romance-driven scenes that felt out of place and unimpactful. While it began with great promise, this drama ultimately succumbed to a disappointing, formulaic finish, proving once again how hard it is to find a Korean drama that maintains its strength from start to end.

Masterpiece: Worth Watching!

This series flawlessly blends slice-of-life, romance, adventure, comedy, sadness, joy, and deep satire. The story is concise with no boring scenes. Despite its simple plot, it feels comprehensive. The title perfectly suits the series. It's ideal for those who enjoy easygoing, romantic, comedic, adventurous, or playful shows. I loved this series.

I was drawn to the series for Woo Do Hwan, but the trailer's unique appeal and the show's delivery exceeded my expectations.

This series avoids unnecessary drama and melodrama, delivering a precise and perfect storyline.

This is not a comedy

This is a well-made drama, with good directing, good script, good acting, good cinematography. The main character played by Woo Do-hwan is the soul of the whole drama. I have not watched his previous works but his acting here is top-notch in my opinion.

I'm surprised that Netflix categorized this drama as comedy. This is NO COMEDY although there are some funny parts, the whole story is tragic and the tone is very very sad. Don't be fooled by that if you are looking for something light and feel-good to watch.

I feel that the 10 episodes can be shortened to 8 episodes. Sometimes the pace is a bit slow especially the crying scenes.

Mr plankton definitely has happy ending for my perspective

I cried a river watching the ending but eventually I came to the terms that it was a happy ending! Cz eventually he became cool plankton that he alws adored.. Plankton who is in the bottom of the food chain but without plankton, fish wouldn't get food, we wouldn't get oxygen.. They alws shine the brightest and maintain the ecosystem sacrificing thyself.

Prepare a box of tissue. By the time you end ep 10, I assure u there will be no tissue left. From ep 1 it was a roller coaster ride. I felt that having a parent and a family is what we normal ppl take for granted. Oh how special it is to just have a family! It broke my heart into thousand pieces to see that ppl tired to take advantages of orphans pretending to be their relative and take money from them. Haejo looking for his birth father so desperately wreaked my heart. Letting go of the person he loves just bcz he was afraid of commitment and the unpredictable pair of haejo and Eo heung was noteworthy. Hats off to the actors and team of Mr Plankton for making a masterpiece. Congratulations to Da hwan for the best work in his career till date! Way to goooo!

Not Your Typical K-Drama

Sincerely, I started to watch this K-drama because I was bored, thinking it would be another average love story and that I'd ditch it halfway as soon as the "bad boy" wout get his cute girl to fall in love with him. I couldn't have been more wrong, I thought, after laughing for five episodes straight-actually, this is not that bad. Even though it was a totally fictional plot, the connection with the characters amazed me with how real they were. My heart started to feel heavy and squeezed by emotions throughout the whole journey. It was a total rollercoaster of character relationships and emotions-their acts, sometimes selfish, sometimes absurd, sometimes pitiful, made them so human. But everything they did was to seek one thing: love.

People are so foolish for searching love where they aren't needed, forgetting to look around and see those who love us no matter what. People who aren't related to us by DNA but who gather with us throughout the journey of life. The main characters did a beautiful job portraying this feeling. Sometimes when I try to explain love to my friends, I imagine this down-to-earth, realistic, but still such a powerful, unimaginable feeling that I cannot explain.

Other than love in its many forms, we felt loss, forgiveness, redemption, letting go, rebirth, and the meaning of self and so much more.

I just want to say thank you and hope others can take a piece of the story with them, just as I did.

Abandoned does not mean insignificant!

Just because something or someone is abandoned doesn't mean they lack value or importance. Often, abandonment can reflect more about circumstances or choices than inherent worth. In fact, sometimes what's abandoned holds immense significance, just waiting for someone to recognize its value again. Mr. Plankton is a deeply poignant yet often darkly humorous Korean TV series that follows the story of Hae-yo's lonely, down-on-his-luck man who feels invisible and lost in a world that constantly overlooks him. Nicknamed "Mr. Plankton" for his insignificance, he drifts through life without purpose or place, much like the tiny marine creature that floats aimlessly in the ocean.

Hae-yo's journey is tinged with sadness as he navigates heartbreak, unrequited love, and a series of bitter disappointments. His family background is fractured, and he feels like a ghost in his own life, observing from the sidelines but never truly part of anyone's story. Despite the heavy emotional toll, he finds himself in absurdly humorous situations that provide moments of comic relief, highlighting the irony and randomness of life.

As Hae-yo meets an eclectic mix of characters, each grappling with their own struggles, he begins to find comfort in their shared experiences of loneliness and pain. Through small, seemingly insignificant moments, he learns that even the smallest life form can have a ripple effect on the world around it. The series beautifully captures the essence of human vulnerability, reminding viewers that while life can be painfully lonely, there are fleeting moments of connection that make it bearable-even if just for a while.

Ultimately, Mr. Plankton is a story about searching for purpose in a vast, indifferent world and finding meaning in unexpected connections. It's a melancholic yet hopeful exploration of life's quiet, often unseen struggles, wrapped in bittersweet humor that reminds us of our shared humanity. He was abandoned but not insignificant! He was loved.

More than a romcom- Emotional and realistic story

This is a great drama. No wonder it is written by writer of it is ok not to be ok drama.

This drama made me very emotional, after a long time i watched this kind of succcesful drama in that aspect. It is very funny and sad at the same time.

With emotional depth and incredible acting from all the actors specialy woo do hwan Lee Yoo-mi s acting are praised by lot and made it very relatable.

I wonder why they named this drama as only romcom. It is mix with life aspect It's not your typical rom-com, and it offers a more nuanced and complex look at love and relationships.

It's a drama that lingers in your thoughts long after you watched it.

It avoids cliched plot devices and predictable character arcs, providing a more authentic and engaging viewing experience.

As person who appreciate unconventional storytelling and complex characters i love this drama so much. Offers a more grounded and realistic portrayal of human relationships, friendship ,love ,loss and family. The characters' interactions feel genuine and relatable, making it easy to connect with their stories.

While there were lot of popular dramas that got high ranking of charts and websites recently which often rely on exaggerated plots and melodramatic unrealistic and cringe story lines, Mr. Plankton offers a more grounded and realistic approach.

Even though it is was very sad ending 😢, this realistic Ending made the drama more quality work rather than a tidy and idealized resolution. This departure from conventional happy endings resonates with viewers who appreciate a more grounded approach to storytelling.

And also, cinematography in is stunning 😍.

It captures the beauty of the Korean countrysides and the city of Seoul.

If you're looking for a K-drama that will make you laugh, cry, and think, Mr. Plankton is definitely worth checking out.

This drama shines brighter than lot of dramas that were merely popular but lack quality.

"You drew stars around my scars now im bleeding"- cardigan by taylor

This is the most tear-jerking K-drama I've ever seen! I'm a huge fan of actor Woo Do Hwan, and I recognize Lee Yoo Mi from "All of Us Are Dead" and "Strong Girl Nam-soon." This series was such a thrilling ride! I ended up watching the entire thing in one sitting. The chemistry between the leads was amazing; they were passionately in love. I loved their playful bickering, and the way they understood and comforted each other.

One moment, I was laughing uncontrollably; the next, I was kicking my legs in excitement, and then I'd find myself crying my eyes out. It was such an emotional rollercoaster. Life was so unfair for Woo Do Hwan's character, and I felt very sorry for Jae-mi. Ten episodes were nowhere near enough! I was expecting a " Queen of tears " plot twist that would leave me in tears, but I didn't get it. After watching the last episode, it felt like someone had tied an anchor around my heart and thrown it deep into the ocean. I refuse to move on from this K-Trama. I would definitely rewatch it!

This drama was like a candle in the middle of a storm for me. Don't miss out on this one!

Good Enough

Korean Drama '' Mr. Plankton '' is a dramedy with a crazy plot mixed up with a tragic core.

The drama has some pretty tragic characters who fight against the odds to be happy, often, however, failing to achieve that happiness. Also, the process of that was filled with many comical elements.

Alas, that mixture was a failure. The comedy didn't blend smoothly with the drama, and the plot was more often than not all over the place, with the characters constantly moving from one place to another so quickly that the plot didn't organically develop. Thus, the story fails to engage.

Fortunately, the performances were stellar and the actors and actresses handled their characters nicely.

So, overall, six out of ten.

One of the best.

I have been down the k-drama rabbit hole for about 3 years now. This this would be definitely be in my top five comedic dramas that I have had the privilege to watch. The script and the story were just wonderful. The Chemistry Between the leads and The Supporting Cast is truly unbelievable. I have seen some negative reviews in regards to the last two episodes, which I really do not understand. The script writing was insanely good. The series has great comedic elements some of them regarding some serious issues. I will definitely plan on rewatching this almost immediately it was that good. Enjoy yourself. I highly highly recommend.

Skippable...Just Skip It

There is so much shrieking and sobbing and yelling in this drama. Did anyone working on this project listen to the audio track for the dialogue and think about whether the audience would want to listen to all of that? I also thought most of the comedy didn't land.

What I did like in this drama and gave the 6 stars for are: the performances of the two male leads (Woo Do-Hwan and Oh Jung Se) (it was the female lead that did most of the shrieking and sobbing and yelling instead of performing her part more naturally and with more nuance), the brother/sister scene in the aquarium, the scene where the female lead tells the mother-in-law to respect her son, the conversations here and there about shoes or plankton or stars and other similar interesting reflections, the character played by Lee El, the shots of picturesque scenery throughout the series, and the song selection of the Mamas and Papas classic (which suited the drama perfectly).

But I won't be rewatching this one and it's fine if you decide to skip it altogether.

Emotionally Engaging Drama with Strong Performances, Despite Some Editing Flaws

At first, I didn't like the editing; it felt chaotic and not fluid. I also didn't like how the director dragged out some scenes. For example, there's no need to make me watch someone cry for over a minute - I understood they were sad and crying after the first 20 seconds.

But despite that, the show manages to make you feel something, and that's the most important thing for me. If a show succeeds in creating a connection between the viewer and the characters, moving the audience's emotions to the point where they feel like they're part of the story, that's a major success.

The acting was realistic and free from the usual Korean drama clichés. The actors weren't afraid to show themselves in unflattering ways, whether crying, falling, or getting hurt. There wasn't any bad acting in this drama; there was a good harmony between the cast.

The show contains a mix of warmth, sadness, depth, joy, and unspoken emotions. It has a bit of everything.

I highly recommend it.

Long and Drawn Out

The show starts and continues for episode after episode after episode and really goes nowhere. It could have been a Netflix limited series and been a wrap in about four forty five minute episodes. Even better, it could have just been a movie. Decent show but some of the episodes were absolutely filler and waste of time.

Like everything made in Korea, it's extremely over dramatic. I get it's a drama show and they're the drama go to department but Jesus. There is probably sixty full minutes of the girl crying about one of the eighteen breakups and makeups. The final scene where is running is just ridiculous.

All in one package

I really loved this drama very much it has all kinds of emotions, I already planned to watch this drama even before it's air but I did not expect it to be this much good .In this drama you can see a different story which is unique and you'll definitely love this drama. The chemistry between the leads make your heart wave and flutter. Woo do hwan proved once again as a actor. He slayed his role. Also you can feel attached to the supporting roles to ,they did a fantastic job as well have to say the locations where they shoot this drama is very beautiful and warm. Mainly woo do hwan is so hot man .

Such a artistic masterpiece

I usually fast forward k-dramas and I know many of them start very interesting but die down around the middle and become boring. This was not your usual k-drama. It somehow reminded me of breaking bad, which is best in American TV and this was best in Korean TV. Absolutely awesome. I am in awe of this series and I would totally love to watch more from this director. What a beautiful, artistic masterpiece they have made.

The actors have done a fabulous job, all of them, even the villains. I think this was the best k-drama of 2024 and I've seen most of them. This was heavy, not for faint hearted and also not to be binge -watched.
