Allowances must be made for and by fans of the medical procedural. While our current Golden Age of TV has been a boon for lovers of superheroes, zombies and glowering male antiheroes, doc drama devotees have often had to make do with shows like Three Rivers, Black Box, Monday Mornings, 3 Lbs, The Night Shift and Emily Owen, MD. And if you can identify more than three of those shows, your brother-in-law probably works as a tech advisor or else you've been truly desperate for any manna in the wilderness. So when something like CBS' Code Black makes

In real life, the emergency room may be a place where you wait and wait and wait for treatment until your arm falls off, but on TV, it's the most exciting place there is. Every week, life-and-death drama plays out there, and every second counts. The stakes couldn't be higher, or the drama more intense.
And yet, for all the dozens of medical shows that have aired, only a few actually center on the emergency room or emergency doctors and paramedics. There'll be a couple more this fall: "Code Black," on CBS, and "Chicago Med," joining "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago Pd" on NBC. Here are some all-time great ER shows for you, stat.

Based on the award-winning documentary by Ryan McGarry, CBS’ new Code Black (premieres Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 10pmET/9pmCT) is a fascinating look at the split-second, life-and-death decisions being made at the nation’s busiest and most notorious ER. A group of medical residents gets a fast introduction to this ER as it operates in a code black (when an influx of patients is so great, they can’t treat them all) about 300 times a year. Code Black is an adrenaline rush of high-stakes drama, built around strong characters (played by standouts Marcia Gay Harden, Luis Guzman and Bonnie Somerville) and an … Continue reading →

We are nothing if not a nation of laws, and according to the official arbiters of audience measurement at Nielsen, the 201516 television season begins today. Do you feel any different? In this age of bingeing and viewing on demand, the start of a new TV year isn’t quite the Pop-Culture Moment it was even as recently as a decade ago. That’s particularly true for younger viewers, many of whom are much more inclined to browse Netflix than park themselves in front of the tube for a network-dictated evening of Must-See TV. And yet, barring a total year-to-year collapse in the linear model, tens of millions of viewers will still return to the broadcast folks over the next few weeks, successfully wooed by months of marketing to check out the first episodes of The Muppets, Code Black, The Grinder, or one of the couple dozen other new shows. Many...

Right now, there is a great documentary on Netflix called Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau. It follows the director's downward spiral on set as he attempted to make the 1996 fantasy horror thriller The Island of Dr. Moreau. The film was such a substantial bomb, no one has wanted to touch it since. Until now. Only instead of another big screen reboot, of which there are many, the classic novel is going to become a weekly TV series on CBS.
Sleepy Hollow series creator Phillip Iscove is set to take on another historical legend for the small screen. He is going to reconstruct one of H.G. Wells' more infamous titles, with a drama series based on The Island of Dr. Moreau. CBS has already handed out a script commitment for the show. And it sounds like the basic story is getting a major overhaul.

NBC’s broadcast of the NFL Kickoff game between the Patriots and Steelers on Thursday night drew 27.4 million total viewers and a 10.3 demo rating (per updated numbers), up 300,000 viewers versus last year’s match-up.

Forget back-to-school shopping and all things pumpkin spice, the real reason everyone's excited for fall is because it brings the return of all of our favorite TV shows – and the chance to develop new obsessions.
In the next few months it looks like TV schedules are going to be more packed than ever as tons of new comedies, dramas and even variety shows vie for DVR space. And even though we've only gotten the briefest of teases of what's heading to small screens, there are already a few shows whose premiere dates we've got marked down on our calendars. (Or,...

CBS Fall 2015 Premiere Dates Released. CBS’s 2015 premiere dates for its new and returning TV series has been released. The most interesting part is that CBS has paired The Big Bang Theory with Supergirl. The former will be the lead-in for the latter. That is huge for Supergirl. That is the best lead-in that the network could have thrown at the new superhero TV show. The Big Bang Theory has fantastic ratings and their audience-base is identical to the one that Supergirl hopes to cultivate.

With Thursday Night Football launching on September 17, CBS has set what the network is calling a "multi-phase launch" for its 2015-2016 season, including giving the heavily anticipated "Supergirl" a special "Big Bang Theory"-fueled premiered. CBS will still launch much of its lineup the week of Monday, September 21, which is the traditional and official start of the Nielsen season. That Monday, the 21st, CBS will premiere "The Big Bang Theory" and "Life in Pieces" in the 8 p.m. hour, followed by the returns of "Scorpion" and "NCIS: Los Angeles." "NCIS" and "NCIS: New Orleans" will return the following night accompanied by the series premiere of "Limitless." "Supergirl" is bound to be a big hit for CBS, and the network is so excited about the new show that it's moving up its premiere date.
The series, which was set to debut sometime in November, will now premiere on Monday, October 26 at 8:30 p.m., before shifting to its permanent timeslot on Monday, November 2 at 8 p.m. That switch is part of a larger strategic scheduling plan, according to CBS brass, meant to expose the largest audiences possible to new programming.
"With many of the biggest hits on primetime television as well as Thursday Night Football, we have the ability to strategically roll out our new season over several weeks this fall," said CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler in a statement. "We've created a very focused scheduling and promotional environment to provide the best possible launch platform for new and returning series across the schedule."

[As in years past, this week, I'm going to be glancing, night-by-night, at how the primetime schedules have changed after the network announcements at upfronts. I'll be looking at how the various changes will impact the ratings races on each night, as well as my own DVRing habits. Readers can chime in on how their own DVRs will be impacted. And yes, this brief series assumes that anybody still watches TV on their TVs. I'm old-fashioned. I'm also probably gonna ignore that I have a fancy new six-tuner DVR that means that I really don't have to make choices anymore. This will assume that I make choices for my own sanity.] Wednesday Nights 8:00 p.m. ABC: "The Middle," "The Goldbergs" CBS: "Survivor" The CW: "Arrow" Fox: "Rosewood" NBC: "The Mysteries of Laura" 9:00 p.m. ABC: "Modern Family," "Black-ish" CBS: "Criminal Minds" The CW: "Supernatural" Fox: "Empire" NBC: "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" 10 p.m. ABC: "Nashville" CBS: "Code Black" NBC: "Chicago Pd" What's Changed: Wednesday is easily the most stable night of the week thus far. Eleven of the 15 shows airing on Wednesday night are the same shows that were airing in the exact same times last fall, while "Empire" and "Supernatural" both came over to their current time periods in the spring. I know you're capable of doing rudimentary math, but that means that 13 of 15 shows airing on Wednesday in the fall were airing here in the spring, with the only two exceptions being Fox's "Rosewood" and CBS' latest 10 p.m. drama "Code Black." No other night can come close to this stability.

CBS today unveiled its 2015-2016 primetime lineup, featuring seven new shows and 22 returning series. CBS will build on a schedule that will finish the current season as America's most-watched network in viewers for the 12th time in 13 years, including the last seven years straight. The new fall dramas are: the heart-pounding medical series Code Black, set in the busiest, most notorious ER in the nation; the fast-paced Limitless, based on the feature film with Bradley Cooper, starring Jake McDorman as an average guy who can suddenly access 100% of his brain capacity with a mysterious pill; and Supergirl, starring Melissa Benoist in the title role based on the DC Comics superhero.
The new fall comedies are: Angel from Hell, about a loud, colorful, often inappropriate woman who claims to be a guardian angel, starring Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Jane Lynch and Maggie Lawson; and Life in Pieces, an irreverent...

Is CBS trying to freshen up its image?
At its upfronts presentation to advertisers, the most-watched network announced it's finally doing away with the aging "CSI" after 15 years. And the highest-profile new series on the fall docket is the younger-skewing "Supergirl."
CBS canceled three shows: "Battle Creek," "The McCarthys," and "Stalker." "Two and a Half Men" and "The Mentalist" concluded earlier this year.
Still, the Eye still boasts strong ratings across the board for its dramas and comedies, so there are not a lot of holes to plug.
Their new shows are: the comedy "Angel From Hell" with Jane Lynch as a guardian angel; medical drama "Code Black"; family comedy "Life in Pieces"; the movie adaptation "Limitless," featuring guest appearances by Bradley Cooper; and "Supergirl."
Here's the new lineup for CBS:
Monday
8 p.m. Supergirl (starting in November)
9 p.m. Scorpion
10 p.m. NCIS: Los Angeles

Upfronts week rolls on. The official unveiling hasn't been made (that'll be next week), but Vulture can confirm that CBS has ordered four dramas and two comedy pilots for the fall season (Supergirl has already made it to series). Three of the dramas, Code Black, Rush Hour, and Limitless, are based on feature films or documentaries, and the fourth is a spinoff of Criminal Minds. The Giant Eye network is also determined to get into the single-camera comedy game: Both Angel From Hell and Life in Pieces are single-cams, a slight surprise for a network that built its brand on multi-cam sitcoms.Code Black: Written by Michael Seitzman and directed by David Semel, the show is based on Ryan McGarry's feature documentary of the same title (he's also an executive producer). The time is almost upon us regarding when the major networks have to make a decision to either renew or cancel their shows that are 'on the bubble' along with selecting which of the dozens of pilots they've produced are good enough to go to series.
At NBC it seems "Chicago Med," "Blindspot" and "Heartbreaker" have made it alongside the straight-to-series "Shades of Blue" and "Telenovela," the previously ordered "Emerald City," and the event series "Heroes Reborn". Still in the running - "The Player," "Warrior," "Superstore" and "Game of Silence".
Fox seems to have "Minority Report" all set to go with "Frankenstein," "Rosewood," "Grinder," and "Studio City" all in contention.
CBS seems likely to move forward with its "Limitless," "Supergirl" and "Rush Hour" series along with medical drama "Code Black".
ABC has "The Catch" and the untitled Jenna Bans project as its likely drama selections with "Runner" and "Boom" said to be in contention.
