The Vancouver Queer Film Festival has unveiled its first wave of titles, including opening films like Ben Whishaw’s Good Boy and Hacks actor Johnny Sibilly’s Great Canyon.

The Vqff will kick off with Closer, an anthology of shorts led by Good Boy, the directorial debut from Mainstream co-writer Tom Stuart, the co-writer of Gia Coppola’s Venice-opener Mainstream.

Skyfall actor Whishaw stars as a desperate man attempting to rob a bank, only to be thwarted by his overly supportive mother (Crown actor Marion Bailey) and an unexpected encounter with his family doctor.

Good Boy is executive produced by Emma Thompson and Coppola. Also playing on opening night is Ella May Sahlman’s romantic comedy Great Canyon, a live-action and animated hybrid that bowed at Sundance. Sibilly stars as a gay man who navigates a whirlwind of anxieties and insecurities on a first date.

Emma Thompson has boarded Ben Whishaw short film “Good Boy” as an executive producer.

The grief-inspired short was written and directed by Tom Stuart. It tells the story of a young man called Danny (played by Whishaw) who grows increasingly desperate as he finds himself ferrying around his mother and a dead pigeon in the back of his Vw van after a heist goes wrong.

“The Crown” star Marion Bailey plays Danny’s mother.

“Danny’s attempt to rob a bank with his overbearing mum is scuppered by the appearance of their family doctor,” reads the logline. “With his mum in the back of his van, and a dead pigeon on the passenger seat, Danny has a growing sense of desperation. But as more and more figures arrive to disrupt his day, we begin to sense that everything is not as it seems…”

The This Is Going to Hurt star is leading short film Good Boy, the directorial debut from Mainstream co-writer Tom Stuart, which filmed on the Glastonbury Festival site in April. Saban Films has picked up the North American rights to Scandinavian thriller Good Boy from Blue Finch Films.

February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.

Blue Finch Films has boarded international sales on European genre titles, Scandinavian thriller “Good Boy” and found footage film “Stéphane,” ahead of their world premieres at Beyond Fest.

“Good Boy,” which delves into the perils of the modern dating world, follows Sigrid who thinks she’s met the perfect match in Christian until she comes to find out that he lives with a man who acts like his pet dog.

French thriller “Stéphane,” a new take on the found footage genre, follows Timothée, as he documents his time with the larger-than-life, and almost unbelievable character that he meets whilst shooting a short film. As time goes on their jovial and eccentric talks become something far more sinister.

“Stéphane” directors, Timothée Hochet and Lucas Pastor, said: “Our movie is an homage to all of the Stéphane’s in the world. We all know a guy like him, in all of his weirdness and authenticity.

Warner Bros. Television Group and HBO have inked a new, first-look deal with producer Stephanie Allain and her production company, Homegrown Pictures.

Allain had previously signed a first-look pack with Wbtvg in 2020, so Monday’s news reveals a continuation of her relationship with that company, and adds in HBO.

Under the terms of the agreement, Allain and her Homegrown Pictures team, which includes Director of Development Gabrielle Ebron, will develop original scripted programming. Warner Bros. Television will produce the projects for HBO and HBO Max, external streaming services, cable and broadcast.

“I’m so excited about the projects we’ve set up at Wbtv over the past two years,” Allain said in a statement. “HBO, HBOMax, and Wbtv really get my vision for Homegrown Pictures, and Gabi and I are grateful for their support. We look forward to producing culturally specific shows that will resonate with wide audiences.”

Joy Goodwin and Ma wrote the script for Mabel which centers around Callie, whose only friends are the plants and trees that surround her home. When her dad’s job moves the family to a sterile subdivision, she is utterly isolated—except for her best friend, a potted plant named Mabel. To Callie, Mabel is a peer, a fellow being, maybe overlooked or unseen, but still very much alive.

Netflix Spain’s most highly-anticipated series release of 2021, “Sky Rojo,” the new original from “Money Heist” creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, will launch worldwide on March 19. To celebrate the premiere announcement, Netflix has shared a new high-octane trailer sure to get viewers’ blood pumping.

As Asian Pacific American Heritage Month comes to a close, Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (Cape) and The Black List have unveiled the 10 features and 10 pilots for the second annual Cape List, a survey of Hollywood executives’ favorite unproduced screenplays.

The Cape List includes a curated list of scripts center on diverse Asian Pacific characters and experiences from writers Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.

Each month, a feature-length installment centered around a holiday is released. June's edition will be released in celebration of Pet Appreciation Week and is headlined by Halloween and Jurassic World star Judy Greer.
