The Vancouver Queer Film Festival has unveiled its first wave of titles, including opening films like Ben Whishaw’s Good Boy and Hacks actor Johnny Sibilly’s Great Canyon.
The Vqff will kick off with Closer, an anthology of shorts led by Good Boy, the directorial debut from Mainstream co-writer Tom Stuart, the co-writer of Gia Coppola’s Venice-opener Mainstream.
Skyfall actor Whishaw stars as a desperate man attempting to rob a bank, only to be thwarted by his overly supportive mother (Crown actor Marion Bailey) and an unexpected encounter with his family doctor.
Good Boy is executive produced by Emma Thompson and Coppola. Also playing on opening night is Ella May Sahlman’s romantic comedy Great Canyon, a live-action and animated hybrid that bowed at Sundance. Sibilly stars as a gay man who navigates a whirlwind of anxieties and insecurities on a first date.

Emma Thompson has boarded Ben Whishaw short film “Good Boy” as an executive producer.
The grief-inspired short was written and directed by Tom Stuart. It tells the story of a young man called Danny (played by Whishaw) who grows increasingly desperate as he finds himself ferrying around his mother and a dead pigeon in the back of his Vw van after a heist goes wrong.
“The Crown” star Marion Bailey plays Danny’s mother.
“Danny’s attempt to rob a bank with his overbearing mum is scuppered by the appearance of their family doctor,” reads the logline. “With his mum in the back of his van, and a dead pigeon on the passenger seat, Danny has a growing sense of desperation. But as more and more figures arrive to disrupt his day, we begin to sense that everything is not as it seems…”

"Frank was the only one who liked me for who I was." Saban Films has debuted the official US trailer for a kinky, extra strange Norwegian film titled Good Boy, from filmmaker Viljar Bøe. This seems to be a freaky twist on "pup play", but with a few twists. A bold & original thriller from up-and coming director Viljar Bøe. Sigrid thinks she's met her perfect match with the charming and handsome Christian, but there is one catch – he lives with a man named Frank who acts like his pet dog. Trying to be open-minded, Sigrid continues the relationship but soon notices an insidious under-tone to Christian. Maybe "puppy play" isn't as innocent as it seems... Throw your old-fashioned moral concepts overboard for this date movie of the wackiest kind. Viljar Bøe’s film transcends the boundaries of genre as much as those between humans and animals. Be a good audience and watch Good Boy!

Despite HBO Max pulling a number of originals from its roster over the past several months, HBO Max originals premiering on the platform this month include a Dionne Warwick documentary, an adult European animated series titled “Poor Devil” and “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special” based on the popular animated series.

The selection of titles for HBO Max in February 2023 will include the continuation of hit TV shows, premieres of holiday specials, and Oscar nominees. HBO Max’s January 2023 additions kicked off the new year with the premieres of TV shows like The Last of Us, which broke HBO records for having the highest jump in viewership for its second episode, and the original series Velma. The month also brought The Menu (2022) and the John Wick franchise to the platform’s library, with plenty more classic films and new releases set to drop on HBO Max in February.
In February 2023, HBO Max will host the streaming premieres of two 2023 Oscar nominees: Sam Mendes’ drama Empire of Light (February 7), which earned Roger Deakins a Best Cinematography nod, and HBO documentary All That Breathes (February 7), which is up for Best Documentary Feature. Blue Finch Films has boarded international sales on European genre titles, Scandinavian thriller “Good Boy” and found footage film “Stéphane,” ahead of their world premieres at Beyond Fest.
“Good Boy,” which delves into the perils of the modern dating world, follows Sigrid who thinks she’s met the perfect match in Christian until she comes to find out that he lives with a man who acts like his pet dog.
French thriller “Stéphane,” a new take on the found footage genre, follows Timothée, as he documents his time with the larger-than-life, and almost unbelievable character that he meets whilst shooting a short film. As time goes on their jovial and eccentric talks become something far more sinister.
“Stéphane” directors, Timothée Hochet and Lucas Pastor, said: “Our movie is an homage to all of the Stéphane’s in the world. We all know a guy like him, in all of his weirdness and authenticity.

Exclusive: A busy week for Judy Greer. Earlier we reported that she was starring in the indie film LA Bound, and today we hear she will play Mrs. G. in the Nicholas Ma directed feature Mabel.
Joy Goodwin and Ma wrote the script for Mabel which centers around Callie, whose only friends are the plants and trees that surround her home. When her dad’s job moves the family to a sterile subdivision, she is utterly isolated—except for her best friend, a potted plant named Mabel. To Callie, Mabel is a peer, a fellow being, maybe overlooked or unseen, but still very much alive.
Helen Estabrook, Luca Borghesde and Ben Howe are producing.
Greer is repped by Artists First, CAA and Felker Toczek.

Netflix Spain’s most highly-anticipated series release of 2021, “Sky Rojo,” the new original from “Money Heist” creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, will launch worldwide on March 19. To celebrate the premiere announcement, Netflix has shared a new high-octane trailer sure to get viewers’ blood pumping.
Accompanied by a punk rock cover of Rosalia’s global mega-hit “Con Altura,” the trailer demonstrates how Pina and Martínez will shift away from the dark, almost noir aesthetics of “Money Heist” and embrace a drug-fueled, brightly colored, blood-spattered pallet for the new series in a mix of genres the two have dubbed “Latin Pulp.” One thing sure to remain however, is Pina and Martínez’s penchant for humor, evident in the trailer’s scant dialogue, limited to “Meow” and “Good boy.”
“Sky Rojo” is also a departure in format for the showrunners, who trade in the hour-long episodes of “Money Heist” for eight punchy,...

Hulu and Blumhouse Television set their next installment of “Into the Dark”: “Tentacles,” anchored to Valentine’s Day, to premiere Feb. 12, Variety has learned exclusively.
Dana Drori, Casey Deidrick, Evan Williams and Kasey Elise star in the psychosexual horror-thriller film, which comes from a story by Alexandra Pechman and Nick Antosca and a teleplay by Pechman. It is directed by Clara Aranovich.
In “Tentacles,” couple Tara (Drori) and Sam (Deidrick) fall head over heels into a new romance and entwine their lives — until their intimacy transforms into something terrifying. The film is said to take inspiration from “the rushes of early intimacy and uncertain power dynamics at play, and the dangers of losing yourself,” and it will also present “a twist on gender roles in modern horror.”

A dog that removes anxiety from its human’s life by killing the people who cause her stress may be a heightened, fantastical look at emotional-support animals, but because there is now such a wide range of small-screen content depicting such therapeutic resources, one does not have to represent all. Education about them is mixing with entertainment.
A killer emotional-support dog is at the center of Blumhouse Television’s latest “Into the Dark” installment for Hulu, “Good Boy.” But even this horror satire may expose an audience to the idea of emotional-support dogs for the first time. That is why, according to Sheila Goffe, vice president of government relations, American Kennel Club, no matter the genre or format, the most important thing when depicting such dogs is to do so accurately for their classification.

In conjunction with Blumhouse TV, Hulu's original horror anthology series Into the Dark boasts quite a cool premise. Each monthly episode features a spooky 90-minute horror story centered on a major U.S. holiday. For instance, the most recent episode, Delivered, revolves around an aptly-set Mother's Day tale of terror. Next on the docket, a Father's Day vignette called Good Boy, due June 12, 2020.
