Anime is a term that, outside of Japan, refers to Japanese animation and is largely associated with the pop culture phenomena influenced by what Western fans recognize as “anime style.” Nowadays, however, anime is going global in more ways than one. The success of such series as Solo Leveling, an anime adaptation by a Japanese studio, A-1 Pictures, of a Korean web novel and manhwa, signals the medium’s move away from homogeneity.

Even more so, anime’s global influence is reflected in the rising popularity of a completely different medium within the Western anime fandom — donghua, or Chinese animation. While culturally and visually distinct from anime and South Korean animation, donghua is a booming industry with prolific action-adventure and dark fantasy scenes. For fans of Solo Leveling’s unique world-building, top-notch action, and creative plot developments, donghua can be the next stop to search for a new favorite series.

We've seen the highs and lows of the anime industry over the past decade, and despite many anime series becoming generic in recent years with the same old isekai routine, a few adaptations such as Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, and Vinland Saga have kept the momentum going.

That said, 2024 boasts a myriad of highly anticipated anime adaptations, including Solo Leveling, One Punch Man Season 3, Uzumaki, and Fire Force Season 3.
