An incredibly fun low-budget indie zombie effort

After finishing their yearly harvest, a small Midwestern town prepares to celebrate their annual festival with their celebrated corn stock, but when they start to turn into ravenous flesh-eating zombies realize it's due to a new chemical preserve put on the corn that's the cause and must stop it from spreading.

This was a generally pretty solid genre outing. Among its better aspects is the solid and quite likable setup that has some fun aspects to it. Getting a nice bit about the history of the town and how they're all dealing with the various interlocking storylines about the lives of the members with their personal lives getting a fine glancing over before the zombie invasion starts, this all comes off rather nicely to get a brief look at the victims and then launching into the zombie attacks. This is a great touch that allows the rest of the film to pretty much be focused exclusively on zombie confrontations where it deals with the ragtag group of survivors wandering through town on either supply gathering trips, informational scouting, rescue missions or escape attempts, and running into the creatures throughout the town. This allows for plenty of cheesy action with the use of fine special effects for the zombies and the aftermath of their gory encounters with the wild encounters bringing about a lot to like. The creative use of employing the corn stalks within the body as a means of tying together the cause of everything is creative enough and lets this get a bit more enjoyment out of this one with the way of bringing it up, while the massive swarming scenes are usually rather fun. The only minor drawback to this one is the way it splits up its focus on so many different characters in various parts of the town as it remains somewhat more difficult to keep track of the characters when they're all separated by the zombies but it's hard to know where everyone is. It's not a major issue to this one and does bring it down slightly being the main drawback to be had here.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

Another great movie from Acrostar Films!

"Attack of the Corn Zombies" is a delightful and terrifying indie sci-fi horror film brought to life by the talented folks at Acrostar Films. Known for their earlier indie gems like "Trepidity," "It Came From Somewhere," and "Desperate Souls," Acrostar Films continues to impress with their latest offering, blending a cast of familiar indie actors with a true horror icon, Lynn Lowry!

Set in 1969, the film takes us to a small Midwest town where infected corn crops lead to a nightmarish outbreak of the undead. With the town cut off from the outside world, a group of friends and family find themselves facing a relentless horde of corn zombies, and it's a thrilling, hair-raising experience from start to finish.

What truly sets "Attack of the Corn Zombies" apart is its remarkable practical effects. The low-budget nature of the film, funded through crowdfunding on Indiegogo, might have initially raised some doubts, but the creative team at Acrostar Films has truly excelled in making every penny count. The gruesome, visceral makeup and effects work on the zombie horde is nothing short of impressive, capturing the gory essence of classic horror and splattering it across the screen in all its terrifying glory.

The writing in the film is a pleasant surprise, seamlessly blending humor and suspense to keep the audience engaged throughout. The film takes a tongue-in-cheek approach, with witty dialogue and humorous situations, making it both a scarefest and an entertaining comedy. The character development is surprisingly well-executed, allowing us to connect with and root for the diverse group of survivors as they face off against the corn zombies.

The direction by the dynamic duo of Steve Hermann and Ashley Hefner is commendable. They manage to maintain a tension-filled atmosphere while infusing the movie with a distinct indie charm. Their creative vision brings the story to life, and their ability to deliver impactful scares is genuinely praiseworthy.

Adding to the film's allure is the inclusion of the horror icon Lynn Lowry, known for her roles in classics like "The Crazies," "Cat People," and "Bathtub Shark Attack." Her presence lends a touch of nostalgia to the film and elevates the overall experience.

"Attack of the Corn Zombies" is an indie horror gem that showcases the resilience and creativity of Acrostar Films. The practical effects, the writing, and the direction all come together to deliver a delightful and terrifying cinematic experience. If you're a fan of indie horror and appreciate a blend of humor with your scares, this movie is a must-see. So grab some popcorn (just not from infected corn) and enjoy the twisted and thrilling world of "Attack of the Corn Zombies."

    An ultra low budget masterpiece.

Following up the serious paranormal romance film Desperate Souls, comes Acrostar's latest period piece, Attack of the Corn Zombies. Set in the 60's, a small town eats some bad corn and guess what happens? You can guess by the title.

The plot is pretty straightforward. After a farmer uses a special ingredient in his fertilizer, who we don't see but we are introduced to his wife, icon Lynn Lowry, the town turns into the walking corn dead. Literally, corn starts to grow from the infected.

For an ultra low budget film, Corn Zombies looks impressive. The film looks like it could have come straight from the 60's with film scratches and film burns. The zombie makeup by Metcalf and Hefner are top notch and are impressive for a low budget film.

With a title like Attack of the Corn Zombies you'd probably be expecting characters that are paper thin and one dimensional. That's definitely not the case, for this is written by Steve Hermann and as with the cheesy It Came from Somewhere, Hermann finds a way to write characters you care for. The character development is surprisingly good and you feel when they meet their zombie demise and that's due to Hermann's writing.

Attack of the Corn Zombies is a fun, enjoyable, seventy five minute romp that proves that Acrostar films is becoming a formidable low budget company.

    Solid zombie film

This was a top notch horror film! Zombie films are hard to do on an indie budget, let alone a period piece film. This film pulls both off great! The town looks vintage, and they were able to even get some classic cars. The zombies had some legit SFX to them and not the typical gray face makeup. It boasted a large cast and each group had their own subplot so it was not just having people around for zombie bait. Just a good amount of comedy keeps part of the film light, but the film gets harsh and gory when it needs to. The story is witty and does take cues form other zombie films but does so by honoring them.

A film like this should be on the radar of the larger horror community. It was on Shudder or the likes, it would blow up. It reminds me of the zombie film The Dead Next Door in the 90s. The production team at Acrostar films deserves all the awards and praise it has gotten for this film. Good job! Can't wait for the sequel.
