When I say sitcom, I’m pretty sure shows like Friends, The Big Bang Theory, and How I Met Your Mother all come to your mind. The genre has been a key part of the television culture for a long time. From black-and-white classics to modern streaming giants, the genre has evolved significantly over the years, while remaining true to one thing: making us laugh. This evolution has also sparked a slight competition among fans, who debate which sitcom is better than the other.

Whether it’s through laugh tracks or sharp, natural humor, sitcoms have given us characters and stories we return to time and time again. But for every iconic sitcom that dominates pop culture, there are just as many hidden gems that don’t get their due. These series, which are mostly just as good, have laugh-out-loud moments and premises that, at times, might be even better...

Hart Hanson's procedural series "Bones" was never a runaway hit for Fox, but thanks to its devoted fan base it had a high Nielsen ratings floor, which made it one of the network's most reliable shows over its 12-year run. Viewers dug its out-there plotlines and, of course, the will-they-or-won't-they chemistry between forensic genius Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) -- something that spilled over to the supporting players, who struck up romantic sparks of their own (most notably between Michelle Conlin's Angela Montenegro and T.J. Thyne's Jack Hodgins).

Indeed, "Bones" had a deep bench of supporting characters who were immensely appealing, so it's kind of surprising that Hanson and Fox never managed to generate a spinoff series for one or more of them. Although the television medium has produced a variety of long-running series, not every show that graces TV screens can have long-term success. Television shows often suffer from weak writing, characterization or circumstances outside their control, reducing many series with major potential to a footnote in the pop culture zeitgeist.

That said, while there are plenty of subpar TV shows that remain exactly that from beginning to end, there are some series that, despite some rough spots, redeem themselves with surprisingly noteworthy endings. Whether their endings are great because they cleanly wrap up important narratives, result in major changes to a beloved character, or even set up the events of other related TV shows & films, these otherwise weak series are worthy of watching just for their finales.

Going Dutch is a comedy series created by Joel Church-Cooper. The Fox series follows Colonel Patrick Quinn, an arrogant and narcissistic man who is reassigned to the “least important Army base in the world” after an offensive rant. Enlisted (Rent on Prime Video) Credit – Fox

Enlisted is a military fiction comedy series created by Kevin Biegel. The Fox series revolves around three brothers who are soldiers in the US Army as they serve their nation by taking care of those who are left behind after the soldiers deploy.

More than a decade after the swift cancellation of the underrated show “Enlisted,” Fox has taken another bite at the apple of a broadcast workplace sitcom set within the United States military. As with its predecessor, the midseason premiere “Going Dutch” counters the global scope of its central employer with the intimate one of immediate family. What it adds to this shared premise is a long litany of jokes about bikes, tulips, prostitution, bluntness as a cultural value and cheese.

Created by Joel Church-Cooper (“Brockmire”), “Going Dutch” stars Denis Leary — also an executive producer, alongside his son Jack — as Colonel Patrick Quinn, a career officer who finds himself exiled to Stroopsdorf, “the least important army base in the world.” The Netherlands outpost’s bowling alley, laundry facilities and world-class fromagerie are under the interim command of Patrick’s estranged daughter Maggie (Taylor Misiak), who defends her colleagues’ lavender-picking, silent-disco-having ways...

If I had the magical formula for a hit television show, I’d probably be using that formula in a more lucrative job. But it’s safe to say that the magical formula would not be a combination of Enlisted, a series Fox canceled after a single season, and Brockmire, a show IFC allowed to run for four seasons despite linear ratings the size of a well-attended college football game.

That said, Enlisted was a terrific show, an unlikely alchemy of broad sitcom laughs and actual patriotism, and Brockmire was one of my favorite shows of the past decade, a deliriously profane comedy with an uncompromising sweetness. So if Fox wants to program a new series that is unquestionably the creative offspring of Brockmire and Enlisted, who am I to quibble about its commercial prospects?

Going Dutch, that self-evident spawn of Enlisted and Brockmire, doesn’t rise to the level of either of those shows.

The X-Files Season 11 was a terrible misfire from Fox. The network has had trouble in creating a decent TV show of late. Fox is notoriously known for their cancelation of fan-favorite shows and instead greenlighting average to bad shows. As the network looks to rebuild its legacy, one show’s revival could be the saving grace for Fox in the television industry.

Kiefer Sutherland’s 24 ran for 9 seasons on the network followed by a short-lived spin-off series, 24: Legacy. Sutherland earlier shared the possibility of bringing back counter-terrorist federal agent Jack Bauer in a revival of the show. Fox could currently benefit from bringing back a critically acclaimed show like 24.

Exclusive: Angelique Cabral is set to star in the Disney Animation feature Wish, Deadline has learned. She will voice Queen Amaya opposite Chris Pine, who stars as King Magnifico, ruler of the magical kingdom of Rosas, where wishes really do come true.

Wish follows Asha (Oscar winner Ariana DeBose), a sharp-witted idealist who makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force: a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star set out to prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen. Alan Tudyk also stars as a talking goat, Valentino Hall.

The film opens November 22.

Additionally, her career booms when she gets a client that goes viral. Over the course of the series, Mavis deals with both insecurity and confidence. There’s something deeply uncanny about Hulu’s “How I Met Your Father.” Billed as a “sequel” to the smash CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” but acting more like a spinoff entry in the “Himym” cinematic universe, “How I Met Your Father” plays out like a millennial MadLib rather than a show all its own. Despite the constant reminders that “How I Met Your Father” takes place in 2022 — both from Hilary Duff as the lovelorn “I” and Kim Cattrall (very game here) as the same character narrating from her 2050 future— its every “modern” reference and joke setup still feel at least five years out of date. That, plus its commitment to the original “How I Met Your Mother” combination of soft punchlines leading to a loud laugh track, makes “How I Met Your Father” one of the more downright disorienting series in recent memory.

Exclusive: After acquiring both television and feature rights, Sony Pictures Television has put in development One Last Last Heist, a half-hour comedy based on Darrin Rose’s comedic short film of the same name, with Rose set to write and executive produce. Two-time Emmy winner Mike Royce is on board as showrunner. Rose is penning a potential pilot aimed at cable/streaming outlets.

Created, written and executive produced by Rose, the series, like the short, follows a crew of blue-collar heisters working their way up the criminal version of the corporate ladder, while dealing with personal and romantic dysfunction.

According to THR, David will take on the role of Ernest Vigman, "a caustic municipal employee who butts up against the hopeful energy of the new warriors." Three months after being picked up straight to series by Freeform, Marvel's New Warriors has found its cast.

Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) has landed the breakout role of Squirrel Girl, while Baby Daddy grad Derek Theler will stay in business with Freeform after landing the role of Mister Immortal in Marvel's first live-action scripted comedy.

The duo lead the ensemble cast in the 10-episode series about six young people learning to cope with their abilities in a world where bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates. Joining Vayntrub and Theler are Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthew Moy as Microbe and Kate Comer as Debrii.

“One Day at a Time” executive producer Gloria Calderon Kellett can’t be boxed in. The writer, producer and even performer has written countless plays, has worked on multi-camera sitcoms (“Rules of Engagement”), single-camera comedies (“How I Met Your Mother”), hour-long dramas (“iZombie,” “Devious Maids”) and more.

Now, along with Mike Royce (“Men of a Certain Age,” “Enlisted”) and the legendary Norman Lear, Calderon Kellett is behind Netflix’s new take on Lear’s “One Day at a Time.”

Together they have come up with a new show that has won over critics, most of whom are predisposed to hate remakes and reboots.

The basic concept of the new “One Day at a Time” remains the same: A single mother raising her teenage kids. But a lot is different.

In December, 1975, Norman Lear’s sitcom “One Day at a Time” premiered on CBS. Created by husband-and-wife duo Whitney Blake and Allan Manings, the series followed a divorced mother who raises her two daughters in Indianapolis on her own. The series ran for nine seasons and finished up in May, 1984.

Now, a modern take on the 70s sitcom will soon hit Netflix, and it’s produced by Lear himself. The series follows three generations of a Cuban-American family living under the same roof and navigating the ups and downs of life. Newly-single mother and military veteran Penelope (Justina Machado) contends with the trials and tribulations of raising her two children — Elena (Isabella Gomez) and Alex (Marcel Ruiz) with the help of her old-school mother (Rita Moreno) and building manager (Todd Grinnell). Think what you will of her shows (personally, I think Season 1 of “Scandal” is a modern classic), but Shonda Rhimes is a delight. After reading her recent book “The Year of Yes,” I’ve been semi-obsessed with Shonda’s (I feel like I can call her Shonda) wit, confidence, and positive outlook. I’d like to believe that if Shonda said yes to dinner, she’d be a lively force at the table, a help in the kitchen before and after, and damn right she’d bring some incredible wine with her to share.
