Renée Elise Goldsberry Is Ready to Share Her Debut Album — and Her Recurring ‘Hamilton’ Nightmares
Image
In 2013, Renée Elise Goldsberry had everything she wanted. She was finally a mother with two young children and a successful theater and television career. She was content. Then she got a call to audition for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s new project. At first, she said no. The project, it turned out, was Hamilton.

“I’m not an idiot. I was a huge fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda from In the Heights. I knew the genius. I just didn’t think that they would cast me for the show,” Goldsberry tells Rolling Stone.

Fans of 'The Recruit' Need To Watch 'Rogue Agent'
Image
While fans of Netflix's flashy spy series The Recruitwould love to see star Noah Centineo play the next James Bond, English actor James Norton is the current frontrunner. As of mid-February 2025, Oddschecker has Norton and Aaron Taylor-Johnson tied with the shortest betting odds to play 007 in Bond 26, with each given a 5/2 chance of winning the role. However, once Bond producers and casting agents see Norton in the underrated spy drama Rogue Agent, Norton's odds could increase considerably.

Released in 2022, Rogue Agent stars Norton as a conniving criminal who tricks the world into believing he is a top-ranking MI5 agent. Although he is not, Norton's performative ability to convince those around him that he's a skilled spy only bolsters his chances of proving his James Bond bona fides. Meanwhile, those drawn to The Recruit's stylish implausibility will enjoy Rogue Agent's extreme twists and turns.

‘Bad Sisters’ Season 2 Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Becka Pregnant?
Image
I know Bad Sisters isn’t a fantasy drama and doesn’t have anything magical to it but I can’t help but hope that Grace will suddenly reappear with the rest of the sisters in Eva’s kitchen someday. Alas, a girl can only dream. In episode 4 of season 2, there are some new developments in the case, not only on the Garvey side of things but the cops’ side of things too. The episode picks up with Houlihan really sticking to her gut and going to a concert. The concert is, of course, Matt’s band (Exile In Ballymun if you were wondering), and she finds Miss Becka there, just as she expected. It seems Houlihan really wants to nail the Garveys, and the easiest target for her is the youngest, Becka. Not only does she ask her directly if she slept with Matt because he found out about what the sisters did,...

Sunflower Bean Got Their Hands Dirty (Literally) to Make Their Raw New EP
Image
One evening back in May, Sunflower Bean found themselves in the woods of upstate New York, caked in 200 pounds of clay. They were shooting Shake, a short film to accompany their EP of the same name, and their goal was to look as muddy as possible — a direct reference to Nine Inch Nails’ iconic Woodstock 1994 performance.

In the backyard of their Airbnb, the rock trio stood on a piece of tarp, performing the title track while routinely being hosed down to make them appear authentically muddy. “You have the idea...

Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans, and Ioan Gruffudd in Les 4 Fantastiques (2005)
Fantastic Four No. 25 is heartwarming and heartbreaking
Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans, and Ioan Gruffudd in Les 4 Fantastiques (2005)
Ryan North’s Fantastic Four has been a huge surprise. Marvel’s First Family usually produces quality content, but this series has been special. It’s focused more on the emotions of the team and the family dynamic as they go on their normal wild and universe-shattering adventures. After twenty-four issues of sweet and loving moments, I should have known that something heartbreaking was about to happen in the comic series. And it did in issue No. 25.

The 25th issue is a milestone. Some comics get canceled before they get to a year. Others before they reach printing. So when a creative team gets to No. 25, they should do something extraordinary. Or, in this case, fantastic. Writer Ryan North decided to bring Reed, Johnny, Sue, and Ben to another planet so the Human Torch could fall in love with one of the aliens, Angelica of the Shore.

"We got to live it,...

Sunflower Bean Return to Their DIY Roots on Heavy Metal ‘Shake’
Image
Sunflower Bean are back with the riotous rocker “Shake,” the title track to their upcoming EP of the same name.

The track opens with a searing Master of Reality-style guitar riff, paired with a video of the New York trio caked in mud. Directed by Isaac Roberts, the clip is part of a 14-minute video the band made for Shake. It will feature each track and reflect the natural elements earth, wind, fire, and metal. The “Shake” video, seen below, represents earth.

Shake, their first EP since 2019’s King of the Dudes,...

Image
“No Me Sigas,” the directorial debut of “Anything’s Possible” writer Ximena García Lecuona, and “Malamuerte,” from Caye Casas, a rising star of pitch black Spanish comedy, both feature in a rich and far-ranging 2023 Blood Window Lab, the project platform of Ventana Sur’s genre forum, which unspools Nov. 27-Dec. 1.

The projects are joined by other buzz titles such as “Into the Spiral,” from Facundo Escudero Salinas, whose thriller, “Broken,” ranks as one of the top 10 most watched Argentine films of 2023.

Also anticipated is “Planet, billed as “a vast depiction of unprecedented worldwide alien contact, exploring different cultures and societal classes through their experiences with the phenomenon,” and directed by Fredrik S. Hana, a 2022 Meliès d’Or Award for “From.Beyond.”

The projects form part of 22 titles as submissions are up 20% this year on last, notes Javier Fernández, head of the Blood Window Program.

That rise comes as little surprise. As big...

From That Johnny Depp Honor to Genre Films: 7 Takeaways From San Sebastian Film Festival
Image
Last year, September’s San Sebastian worked a minor miracle, staging a safe on-site festival as second-wave Covid-19 built up in Spain. This year, on-site attendance will be up, though travel problems, caution and costs in Latin America, the U.S and Asia will prevent a full attendance.

That said, this year’s festival, running Sept. 17-25, will be firing on all cylinders — as a Spanish-language movie emporium, a new talent hub and launchpad for the local Basque industry. Following, seven takes on the most important film event in the Spanish-speaking world:

Star Power: Cruz, Banderas, Bardem, Depp, Cotillard, and Chastain?

Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas are expected for the Spanish premiere of “Official Competition” and Javier Bardem the world premiere of “The Good Boss.” Despite some opposition Johnny Depp will receive a career-achievement Donostia Award as, less controversially, will Marion Cotillard. Jessica Chastain, fest organizers hope, will attend for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,...

Nev Schulman is the latest to channel Jack Sparrow on ‘Dancing with the Stars’: Was he as good as James Van Der Beek and Riker Lynch? [Watch]
Image
Longtime “Dancing with the Stars” fans are well-acquainted with “Disney Night,” and at this point they’re just as well-acquainted with celebrities portraying Jack Sparrow from “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Nev Schulman did just that, as James Van Der Beek did only a year earlier and Riker Lynch did in 2015. So how did Schulman compare? Watch his performance above, and scroll down to see Van Der Beek and Lynch’s routines.

Schulman’s performance at least distinguished itself in a couple of ways. His predecessors both performed the exact same style of dance (paso doble) to the same piece of music (“He’s a Pirate” from “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl”). Schulman instead danced an Argentine tango to “Angelica” from “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

Here is the lineup for ‘Dancing with the Stars” Disney Night
Image
It’s the most synergistic time of the year: Disney Night on “Dancing with the Stars!” And don’t worry, Carole Baskin will continue her feline theme with “The Lion King.” Because who didn’t see this coming?

The “Tiger King” star will perform the samba to “Circle of Life” on Monday, so this could be, um, interesting. How many rolls will Pasha Pashkov toss in here? And how will they recreate the iconic opening (because you know they will)?

Two dances will be performed the first time this season: the Charleston by Justina Machado and Sasha Farber, and the Argentine tango by Nev Schulman and Jenna Johnson.

Kaitlyn Bristowe has the rumba, which ought to be slightly easier on her bum ankle.

Most of the Disney movies and songs are well-known classics — and one will definitely make you cry, so get the Kleenex now: “Married Life” from “Up,” to...

Raspoutine l'agonie (1981)
Filmmaker Shares What It’s Like to Cancel Festival and Theatrical Plans — and Bounce Back
Raspoutine l'agonie (1981)
Before the brakes of civilization screeched to a halt, 2020 was shaping up to be an exciting year for me: “Agony,” a psychological thriller I produced and directed in Italy starring Asia Argento, was set for a 10-city theatrical release via our distributor Gravitas Ventures. One week before the April 3 release, I received a phone call from Gravitas’s VP Brendan Gallagher, asking if we should agree to forfeit the theatrical release and shift focus on the VOD day-and-date release that was planned. Just like that, the assembly line of Dcp’s, theatrical bookings and PR halted. It was a mutual decision that reflected some of the bigger questions in relation to what filmgoers have witnessed as the moviegoing experience vanished from our culture.

Filmmakers make films to see them projected in the collective dream space of cinematic cathedrals, but for a film of the “Agony” scale it has always seemed...

Janet McTeer To Star In ‘The President Is Missing’ Pilot At Showtime
Janet McTeer
Exclusive: Golden Globe, Tony and Olivier Award winner Janet McTeer (Ozark) has been cast as a lead opposite David Oyelowo in The President Is Missing, Showtime’s drama pilot based on the novel by President Bill Clinton and James Patterson from Christopher McQuarrie and Anthony Peckham.

McTeer is a series regular in the upcoming third season of Netflix’s Ozark, which has been completed, after recurring in Season 2. No one would comment, but her casting in The President Is Missing as a main series regular raises questions about her future on Ozark beyond Season 3.

In The President Is Missing pilot, a powerless and politically aimless vice president (Oyelowo) unexpectedly becomes president halfway into his administration’s first term when President Jillian Stroud goes missing, despite his every wish to the contrary. He walks right into a secret, world-threatening crisis, both inside and outside the White House. Attacked by friends and enemies alike,...

In the Soup (1992)
Steve Buscemi and Alexandre Rockwell Revisit ‘In the Soup,’ the Sundance Hit That Left Its Director Struggling For a Purpose
In the Soup (1992)
Among the many American independent films made in the ‘90s, few reflect the climate better than “In the Soup.” Director Alexandre Rockwell’s black-and-white comedy, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival, follows wannabe New York filmmaker Adolpho Rolo (a young Steve Buscemi) as he attempts to turn his 500-page screenplay into a movie starring his next-door neighbor Angelica (Jennifer Beals). Adolpho’s ambitions are exploited by the mysterious Joe (Seymour Cassel in one of his most endearing performances). The alternately charming and confrontational cigar-chomping raconteur proclaims his desire to produce Adolpho’s movie, while forcing him into a series of strange criminal antics, as Adolpho’s project drifts further away from his original intentions.

The scrappy movie resembles the indie-filmmaking energy at the time — not for nothing does Jim Jarmusch make a cameo — and remains a charming statement on the conflict between artistic passion and...

Canneseries: 8 Things It Said About International Drama
Cannes — Canneseries suggested we are “living in a golden age of global television,” said Harlan Coben, emphasizing the world “global.” Here, extrapolating from its series , are 8 trends in global drama:

1.Women Power

Women are sticking it to men. Sometimes quite literally, as in “Killing Eve,” where Jodie Comer’s Villanelle, a brilliant, if nonchalant, female assassin, finds an original use for a hair-pin and an Italian mobster’s left eye. “Bullets,” from Finland’s Vertigo, which won the sneak-peek MipDrama Buyers Summit Coup de Coeur, forefronts two strong women – an undercover cop, an ex-terrorist – in a series which is both high-octane political thriller and a female friendship drama. “Angelica,” one of the most liked projects at In Development, is set at the last abortion clinic in a conservative U.S. state which becomes a flashpoint for broader divisive social confrontation. Of the 12 drama series projects presented at In Development, there...

Abortion Clinic-set ’Angelica’ Taps into Rise of Timely Issue-Driven Drama (Exclusive)
Jen McGowan
For decades, there have been few subjects more dramatically debated than the ethics and legality of abortion. Yet it’s a topic that is largely ignored in scripted TV, with only a few recent series willing to do anything more than allude to the procedure. Show creators Jen McGowan and Eliza Lee are looking to change that with “Angelica,” a new series they will pitch at the Canneseries and Mip TV’s In Development section.

The show follows the stories of four women in a small Midwestern town, soon to be home to the state’s only remaining abortion clinic. Once that happens, the population of the area splits, and the clinic itself becomes a flashpoint of activity for people from in and outside the community.

“Angelica” is a series created and written by two women, which will focus primarily on women characters to address an exclusively women’s issue.

Gael García Bernal at an event for Bad Santa (2003)
Canneseries Rolls Out Pink Carpet For TV Festival As It Looks To Replicate Film Festival Success
Gael García Bernal at an event for Bad Santa (2003)
Y Tu Mama Tambien director Gael García Bernal, Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller Bridge, Dexter’s Michael C Hall and The Wire’s Michael Kenneth Williams are all set to walk the famous steps of the Palais des Festivals in Cannes this week. However, instead of the film festival’s famous red carpet, the group will be strolling down a pink carpet for the launch of TV festival Canneseries.

The event, which takes place alongside Mip TV from April 4 – 11, is the brainchild of Cannes mayor David Lisnard, who wanted to replicate the success of the city’s film festival with an event celebrating the small screen. It is run by former French Culture Minister Fleur Pellerin and former TF1 executive Benoît Louvet, who is managing director.

Louvet tells Deadline: “Our aim has always been to introduce a world class international festival dedicated to series, made possible by the location, the city of Cannes,...

Review: ‘Angelica’ is an Erratic Psychosexual Victorian-Era Ghost Story
Midway through Angelica, a medium (played by a hammy, bug-eyed Janet McTeer) talks to Constance (Jena Malone) about the ghostly apparition plaguing her and her daughter Angelica at night. “I’m not a man,” she says. “Do not tell me what you know, or what you can prove. Tell me what you feel.” It’s one line out of many writer/director Mitchell Lichtenstein uses in his psychosexual Victorian-era ghost story to make his points about misogyny and sexual repression clear, although his blunt-force clarity ends up strangling away any sense of tension or intrigue. For a film dealing with the unknown of the supernatural, it wants viewers to know as much as possible about its subtext.

Before things started going bump in the night, Constance found herself living out a storybook romance. An orphan with no status or money to her name, she catches the eye of scientist Joseph...

Trailer for the Gothic Horror Thriller Angelica with Jena Malone
I've always like Jena Malone. She's done a ton of film work over the years, but is probably best known for her role as Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games franchise. Anyway, it's good to see that she has a new movie coming out. It's called Angelica and it's a gothic victorian set supernatural horror thriller that is described as a "spellbinding ghost story about desire, repression and its consequences". Here's the synopsis:

In Victorian London, puritanical doctors prescribe abstinence to a young couple after the life-threatening birth of their daughter. Sexual repression leads to obsession and opens the door to paranormal phenomena in this psychosexual gothic drama.

I like the Victorian setting of the film and I enjoy a good gothic horror film, but this could go either way. The movie could turn out being a decent horror movie or it could turn out being a turd. I'll give it a shot,...

Official Trailer for Horror Thriller Film 'Angelica' Starring Jena Malone
"The evil that troubles your home must see that I am your invited guest." Freestyle has revealed an official trailer for the horror thriller Angelica, which has been sitting on the shelf for two years awaiting release. Angelica is the latest film from Mitchell Lichtenstein, the director of that wacky, freaky horror film Teeth from a decade ago. This is a supernatural thriller set in Victorian England about a couple who encounter a ghost in their house after having a baby named Angelica. It's described as a "spellbinding ghost story about desire, repression and its consequences", which sounds like it could be good, but also sounds like it could be bad. Jena Malone stars, also with Ed Stoppard, Janet McTeer, Tovah Feldshuh, Charles Keating, Daniel Gerroll, and James Norton. The footage is creepy, but it doesn't seem like anything that special. Here's the official trailer (+ old poster) for Mitchell Lichtenstein's Angelica,...

Fiends, there is no doubt in my mind that the weeks in late September in Austin, TX is heaven on earth for a genre fan like me. Why? Two words – Fantastic Fest!

Every year, we’ve been trying to see if we can figure out what might play before those three separated waves of amazing content roll out. Some years, our guesses have been good. Some years, not so good. Even if these films don’t play at the best genre film festival in the United States, we hope that you put them on your radar, regardless. Berlin 2015: 'Angelica' review
★★☆☆☆ Director Mitchell Lichtenstein achieved cult veneration with Teeth (2007), a idiosyncratic body horror about a young fundamentalist Christian who develops a gynaecological abnormality that she turns to her advantage in order to ward of the threat of male violence. He returns to these well-trodden themes of female sexual repression in his ludicrously ostentatious and fervently Freudian psychological thriller Angelica (2015). Based on Arthur Phillips' eponymous novel, Lichtenstein's latest the story of a Victorian marriage destroyed by gender divisions and attitudes towards female sexuality. Jena Malone stars in a well-earned leading role as both the eponymous Angelica and (via flashbacks) her mother Constance.

Berlin Review: 'Teeth' Director Mitchell Lichtenstein's 'Angelica' Starring Jena Malone
Just three features in to his filmography, it’s safe to say that director Mitchell Lichtenstein is never happier than when, how shall we put it, frolicking in the lady garden. Even his least gynecological film, 2010's "Happy Tears," had Parker Posey analyzing her vaginal discharge. And his debut, 2007's "Teeth," positively gloried in its vaginality: grotesquely, graphically, and with uneven black humor telling the exploitation-style story of a young woman's journey to empowerment via her vagina dentata — or, if you prefer a more euphemistic take, the choppers in her ham wallet. It's to this literally fertile territory he returns in his third, and most well-crafted film, "Angelica," albeit dressed up in corsets and bustles and adapted from an Arthur Phillips novel. While it may look and sound a little like a ghost story in the "Turn of the Screw" mould, and while there are a multitude of subplots and side themes that should add.

Berlin Trailer: Supernatural Thriller 'Angelica' Starring Jena Malone, From The Director Of 'Teeth'
It’s been six years since Mitchell Lichtenstein’s last feature, "Happy Tears," and eight since his debut, the Jess Weixler-starring “Teeth.” Ahead of its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival this weekend, the trailer for Lichtenstein’s third film, "Angelica," has arrived online for your viewing pleasure. Running just over 45 seconds, the trailer (via THR) for “Angelica” is a brief look at Lichtenstein’s first foray into the period piece, even if it’s still within the confines of the horror genre. The film also marks the first time Lichtenstein has adapted a book, Arthur Phillips’s novel of the same name, and it centers on Jena Malone’s Constance, who, in 1880 London, must practice sexual abstinence because of the erroneous medical advice of the era. As one expects in a Lichtenstein film, things do not go well. Here's the official synopsis: London in 1880, in the middle of the Victorian era.

2014 Sundance Film Festival Predictions List: An Intro
Kids. Such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Reservoir Dogs before it, and such as Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine and Fruitvale Station after it, Larry Clark & Harmony Korine’s seminal film is forever connected in “spirit” to the lieu where it received its secret midnight premiere screening in 1995. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.

Jena Malone Signed on to Victorian Ghost Story Angelica
Just hot off her attachment to The Hunger Game: Catching Fire as Johanna Mason, Jena Malone has signed on to be leading lady in another book-turned-movie, Angelica, a spooky Victorian ghost story by bestselling author Arthur Phillips.

Here’s the synopsis from the book.

The novel opens in London, in the 1880s, with the Barton household on the brink of collapse. Mother, father, and daughter provoke one another, consciously and unconsciously, and a horrifying crisis is triggered. As the family’s tragedy is told several times from different perspectives, events are recast and sympathies shift. In the dark of night, a chilling sexual spectre is making its way through the house, hovering over the sleeping girl and terrorizing her fragile mother. Are these visions real, or is there something more sinister, and more human, to fear? A spiritualist is summoned to cleanse the place of its terrors, but with her...

Casting Net: Emma Watson in talks to play Cinderella; Plus Gary Oldman, David Lynch, and more
Lily James in Cendrillon (2015)
• Emma Watson might get the princess treatment in Kenneth Branagh’s live action adaptation of Cinderella for Disney. Cate Blanchett has already been cast as the wicked stepmother. Watson is only in early talks at this point, so although it seems like the shoe fits, it might be best not to get too attached to the idea of her as Cinderella. [Variety]
