This June’s Film On Film Festival will include an original 1977 print of Star Wars, shown on the big screen for the first time in decades.

If the BFI wanted to create a bit of fuss among genre fans with this year’s Film On Film Festival, then mission accomplished. The institute has announced that it’s to stage a rare screening of Star Wars this June – an original dye-transfer print from 1977, stored in its archives and never before shown to the public.

Star Wars was, of course, re-released in a restored and modified form for its 20th anniversary in 1997. After this, George Lucas, who then still owned Lucasfilm, was rather protective over the earlier, unmodified cut of what was later named Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. While it’s been tinkered with further since, it’s the 1997 version of Star Wars publicly available on disc and Disney+.

Johnnie To has revealed that he has been working on a Hong Kong-set drama entitled Hope for the past three years exploring the current state of play in his home territory.

He also confirmed rumors that surfaced in late 2024 that he is planning to shoot a gangster movie in Japan’s mountainous Hokkaido region at the end of this year, but said it is contingent on his finishing the Hong Kong production.

Speaking to Deadline on the fringes of the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra event, To suggested he was currently creatively blocked over how to finish the Hong Kong film.

‘I shot 10 days two months ago and then I stopped. I had no feeling about how to shoot, so I will wait,” he said.

The director said he was using his trademark method of shooting without a screenplay, and that it was too early to say precisely what the film is about.

The Cannes Film Festival will reveal its 2025 lineup on Thursday morning European time and expectations are high for a typically bountiful lineup of starry fare and arthouse treats. Cannes remains the Super Bowl for indie film lovers.

The BTS member titled the single after Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece painting. A press release notes, “The track likens the praise for the alluring person to the timeless masterpiece.
