US industry figures have reacted to Thursday’s news that Sundance Film Festival will relocate to Boulder, Colorado, in 2027.
The location change comes after a year-long search and means that after next January’s final edition in Park City, it will be goodbye to the Utah ski resort. For four decades Sundance in Park City has championed thousands of filmmakers and major breakouts like Steven Soderbergh, Quentin Tarantino, Dee Rees, Sian Heder, and Christopher Nolan.

March 17 is...you guessed it, St. Patrick's Day. The day when Americans celebrate their Irish heritage. Yeah, it might be an important day elsewhere in the world, but Ireland does not celebrate in the same way.
That is fine because the great island has given us a lot of acting talent for a total population of just around seven million. The great actors per capita for the Irish are likely better than nearly any other populace. That means the culture is ripe to produce excellence.
Of course, not every wonderful actor from the Irish island (we are including Northern Ireland here as part of the complete island) has a film featured on Netflix. Several do, however. In fact, the actors below have more than one film streaming on Netflix, so there is a lot to watch on St. Patrick's Day.

Michael Fassbender has enjoyed an extraordinary career, bridging decades of storytelling. Unfortunately, his productivity generally declined in the 2020s. After the critically panned X-Men: Dark Phoenix(2019), the actor stepped away from Hollywood for several years. He instead took time to focus on his career as a professional racer. Consequently, he did not star in a single movie between 2020 and 2022. This was a natural decision during the pandemic, as Hollywood faced hardship during that period. Still, there was no evidence that Fassbender would have the chance to return due to insurance issues.
Fassbender did not stay away forever, thankfully. The actor returned to the screen in 2023 for The Killer and Next Goal Wins and also starred in Kneecap in 2024. These movies have been coming slowly compared to the rest of Fassbender's career. He was previously capable of starring in three films in one calendar year. As awards season rumbles ever onwards, Edward Berger’s Conclave takes the top prize at this year’s BAFTA ceremony.
It was the 2025 BAFTA cermony last night and this rather strange awards season continued with Edward Berger’s Conclave taking home the Best Film prize in a category that has been largely dominated by speculation about its rivals. However, the papal election drama landed Best Film, Best British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing gongs.
Also enjoying a good night at the ceremony was The Brutalist with the film scoring four awards – Best Director for Brady Corbet, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, not to mention Best Score (and what a score it is!) and Best Cinematography.
Sean Baker’s Anora landed Best Actress for Mikey Madison and Best Casting too. Dune: Part Two was awarded Best VFX and Best Sound, two prizes to honour what was an incredible technical achievement.

The 2025 Oscar race took a detour across the pond on Sunday as the BAFTA Film Awards were handed out, with the hometown favorite Conclave finishing on top.
Conclave came in with a leading 12 nominations, and it finished with four overall wins — Best Film, Best British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing — on an evening when voters spread the wealth. The Brutalist scored for Best Director (Brady Corbet) and Best Actor (Adrien Brody). The Best Actress race featured a surprise, with Anora star Mikey Madison upsetting Golden Globe and Critics Choice winner Demi Moore (The Substance). It was an otherwise quiet night for Anora, with just one other win for Best Casting after a scorching weeklong stretch that saw the film rack up top prizes from the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, Producers Guild, and Writers Guild.
Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) continued their domination of the supporting categories.

Despite the many controversies of Emilia Perez, the film has drawn tremendous acclaim. Now, the movie has more prestigious award wins to add to its accolades.
At the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday, Emilia Perez picked up two big honors. Zoe Saldana garnered the win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film as Rita Mora Castro. One of her co-stars, Selena Gomez, was also nominated for the same award. Other nominees included Jamie Lee Curtis for The Last Showgirl, Ariana Grande for Wicked, Felicity Jones for The Brutalist, and Isabella Rossellini for Conclave. After her win, Saldana dedicated the award to her trans nephew, telling journalists afterward (per Variety) it was the "one last thing I didn't get to say on stage."

David Tennant took to the podium as the BAFTA Film Awards host for a second time on Sunday night — and called out U.S. President Donald Trump.
The “Doctor Who” star, who also hosted last year’s ceremony, opened with a performance of the Proclaimers’ hit “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” getting members of the audience — including James McAvoy, Anna Kendrick and Colman Domingo join in.
Tennant then took aim at Trump in his monologue, describing “The Brutalist” as “a film about incredible architecture. In fact, it’s the boldest architecture in film this year, apart from Donald Trump’s hair in ‘The Apprentice.'”
He continued, “Donald Trump, he says he hasn’t seen ‘The Apprentice’ because it’s a 15 [referring to the U.K. film rating]. It’s not on Nickelodeon. Donald Trump … I’m worried. I’ve said his name three times. It’s like ‘Beetlejuice’ — I’ve summoned him. And talking of villains…...

The papal drama “Conclave” has been named the best film of 2024 at the Ee BAFTA Film Awards, which took place on Sunday in London.
Voters from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts spread the wealth, giving “Conclave” and “The Brutalist” four awards each and giving two to “Dune: Part Two,” “Wicked,” “Emilia Perez,” “A Real Pain,” “Anora” and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.”
The win for “Conclave” is the most significant for the film in a season in which “Anora” has been winning most of the major awards. It also gave director Edward Berger two BAFTA Best Film wins in the last three years, following his first for “All Quiet on the Western Front” two years ago.

At a BAFTA Awards where there was no clear frontrunner going into the ceremony, British Academy voters chose to largely share the spoils when it came to handing out honors.
But only one could win the top prize of best film, and this year that went to “Conclave,” which had entered the night with the most number of nominations (11). The 78th British Film Academy awards are heading our way tonight – here’s what you need to know about the big night at the Royal Festival Hall
With each passing year the attention paid to the Bafta film awards turns up a notch, as campaigns jostle and reposition themselves in the quest for the real prize: an Academy Award. The Oscar race is pretty open this year, even more so after the Emilia Pérez debacle, but with its British centre of gravity and slightly differing nominations list, the Baftas have their own dynamic. Hence the Baftas can sometimes seem to be a fairground-mirror reflection of the American contest, or (looked at the other way) an assertion of a similar but separate cultural identity.
The most obvious example of this is the strong showing for Belfast rap comedy Kneecap, which could walk off with a fistful of Baftas, but failed to...

Despite the recent massive shakeup in the Oscar race after Anora took down The Brutalist at the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, and Producers Guild awards, look for The Brutalist to walk away with the most trophies at the 78th annual BAFTA Awards this weekend, according to Gold Derby’s winner predictions.
Both movies are going head-to-head for Best Film, where the other three nominees are A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez.
The Brutalist, which scored nine total BAFTA bids, is now forecasted to dominate the field by winning five trophies: Best Film, Best Director for Brady Corbet, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, Best Cinematography, and Best Score. The period piece tells the story of a Holocaust survivor who hopes to achieve the American Dream.

Brady Corbet’s epic American immigrant saga “The Brutalist” has been given the top prize by the U.K.’s leading film writers and broadcasters.
At the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards on Sunday night, the feature was named film of the year in a ceremony that saw the honors widely shared across a number of titles, although notably both “The Substance” and “A Complete Unknown” came away empty-handed.
Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller “Conclave” took two awards, including British/Irish film of the year and actor of the year for Ralph Fiennes, while RaMell Ross’s radical Colson Whitehead adaptation “Nickel Boys” was recognised with director of the year and the technical achievement award for Jomo Fray’s first-person cinematography.
Elsewhere on the night, Jesse Eisenberg’s dark comedy “A Real Pain” was another multiple prizewinner, awarded screenwriter of the year for the actor-filmmaker, and supporting actor of the year for co-star Kieran Culkin.

Pop quiz. Do you remember what won the Oscar for Best Original Song last year? Here’s a hint: Think pink.
You can listen to Billie Eilish singing "What Was I Made For?” the 2024 Oscar winner on Netflix right now. (It’s in Barbie if you didn’t know.) You can also catch the 2023 Best Song "Naatu Naatu,” from Rrr. But will you be able to hear this year’s winner on Netflix?
After the nominations were announced today, I think there’s a pretty good chance. Three of the five songs nominated for this year’s award are in movies currently available for streaming on Netflix. Before I get to them, let me just mention two other songs currently on Netflix that were on the Academy’s shortlist and did not get Oscar noms because they happen to be two of my three favorites this year.

‘Emilia’ Marches On
Records tumbling: As was widely expected, French musical crime drama Emilia Pérez could be in for a record-breaking Oscar night in a few weeks after landing a whopping 13 Academy Award noms. Jacques Audiard’s movie is already smashing ceilings, garnering the most noms for a film not in English and seeing star Karla Sofia Gascón become the first openly trans person ever to be nominated in an acting category. If Emilia Pérez wins the international prize, it will be the first French pic to do so in more than 30 years. That category, which we of course keep a close eye on, is dominated by Europeans, featuring Germany’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Latvia’s Flow and Denmark’s The Girl With The Needle.

The 2025 Oscar nominations saw a number of big names and Oscar favorites (Angelina Jolie, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Luca Guadagnino and the rest of the Challengers team) miss out on recognition this year.
Indeed, Challengers — despite being in the awards conversation all season, with Golden Globe nominations for the film and star Zendaya and a Globe win for best score for Oscar faves Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — failed to receive a single Oscar nomination on Thursday morning.
Challengers director Luca Guadagnino also saw his other awards hopeful film, the Daniel Craig starrer Queer, fail to receive any nominations, including for Craig, who was seen as a possible best actor nominee though he was notably snubbed by the BAFTAs.

As expected, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez (Netflix) landed a Best International Feature Film Oscar nomination today, one of a leading, and record-setting 13 overall for a film not in English. Other mentions for the audacious musical melodrama include Best Picture, Director, Actress and more.
With so many inclusions elsewhere, it’s possible that votes are split and Emilia Pérez does not convert to a win in the International race with folks opting to honor another deserving picture. But, if it does win, it would be the first time that a selection from France scores an Academy Award in the International category since Régis Wargnier’s Indochine in 1993.
The other titles in the International Oscar field doing crossover duty include Walter Salles’ lauded and so-called “comeback” movie, I’m Still Here from Brazil where it has done terrific box office for Sony. The movie also scored a Best Picture nomination as well...

The independent film community settling into Park City where the next crop of indie films will launch at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival has something to celebrate: a 2024 where audiences turned out and started to turn the market around.
“In the independent theatrical world post-Covid, we were asking ‘Are we going to exist?’ And the answer is, ‘Yes. We can’,” says producer Erik Feig, founder and CEO of Picturestart. “These movies are working on a financial level. They are working on a cultural level, and that’s what theatrical movies are all about.”
“I’m feeling that there’s definitely more opportunity bubbling around in terms of the audiences that are showing up,” agrees Lia Buman, co-founder of Tango Entertainment. “And then, when a film is hitting its target with its audience, that’s how word of mouth builds and then that’s how they grow and grow. It’s almost old school.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key people shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking to writer-director Rich Peppiatt, whose debut feature Kneecap has taken the indie world by storm since it launched at Sundance last year. The Irish-language film about Belfast hip-hop trio Kneecap, which was snapped up by Sony Pictures Classics last year, has been selected as Ireland’s entry for the Best International Oscar race. The film has notched up six BAFTA nominations and won seven BIFAs. He tells us about the challenges of putting that feature together and maps out what’s next.
Rich Peppiatt isn’t afraid of failure, so long as it’s on his own terms. When developing his subversive and politically charged Irish-language feature Kneecap, which has taken the festival and awards circuits by storm since it launched at Sundance just over a year ago,...

A year ago, what were the odds that the top-grossing film out of Sundance 2024 would be one starring and executive produced by 93-year-old June Squibb?
Magnolia acquired Josh Margolin’s feature debut “Thelma” right at the end of the festival — one of a few acquisitions that closed during its run. Released in June, it’s grossed $9.1 million in the U.S./Canada. That makes it, for now, the top hit out of the 2024.
Why the “for now”? Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence,” a $5 million Neon acquisition also out of the Sundance 2024 Premiere section, debuts in wide release Friday. Although regarded as a niche title, it could pass $9 million.
“A Real Pain,” which Searchlight bought for worldwide release for $10 million out of the U.S. Dramatic section, stands at a $8.1 million domestic since its release November 1. Disney stopped reporting its grosses last weekend, suggesting it has topped out. (It has been available...

“Thelma,” the action comedy starring a 93-year-old June Squibb, sold to Magnolia Pictures out of last year’s Sundance for around $2-3 million and made $12.5 million at the box office. That box office is about $4.5 million less than what Netflix paid for the straight-to-streaming horror title “It’s What’s Inside” at the fest. That movie spent just one week on the streamer’s global Top 10, and without a significant theatrical release.
Looking ahead in 2025, it’s time to start recalibrating what success looks like, and Sundance may be the perfect place to start.
For Magnolia, last year’s “Thelma” turned out to be the best-performing film in the indie distributor’s 23-year history. Magnolia bought the movie in a competitive situation at Sundance 2024 and was an unlikely player to give it a wide release.
The indie success stories don’t stop there. Mubi was a surprise, aggressive buyer for “The Substance” out of Cannes,...

“Kneecap,” Rich Peppiatt’s acclaimed comedy-biopic about the Belfast rap trio of the same name, is heading back to Irish cinemas this week after landing six BAFTA nominations.
Wildcard Distribution — which also co-produced the film — is re-releasing “Kneecap” across Ireland exactly a year after it became the first Irish-language film to world premiere in Sundance 2024, where it became one of the breakout hits of the festival and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.
Telling the wild and semi-fictitious story of how Kneecap came together as a band and their proud use of Irish, “Kneecap” has already broken records on home soil, where last year it had the widest theatrical opening for a non-English language film and, with $1.5 million, earned the biggest box office for an Irish-language film. There’s hope that its ongoing award season success — and growing optimism that the feature will be nominated for an Oscar later...

“If I could do it with an iPhone and 50 quid, I was making this film,” says Rich Peppiatt about his award-winning feature Kneecap.
The Irish hip-hop “print the legend” biopic on the Belfast-based rap trio — boasting Michael Fassbender among its ensemble — is a far cry from iPhone quality, and has taken the indie film world by storm.
Peppiatt’s Irish-language film, riddled with expletives, hallucinogenics and baton twirling mischief, swept up at the British Independent Film Awards in December and on Wednesday, scored six BAFTA nods, including for best British film and outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer. It makes Kneecap the British Academy’s third most nominated debut film ever and Peppiatt the most nominated debut director in BAFTA history. It’s been no surprise to anyone that the movie is Ireland’s Oscar submission for best international feature film this year, too.

The UK government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (Dcms) has said it will invest £60m in the creative industries in 2025, including£7m for the UK Global Screen Fund, and will bring forward reform of the apprenticeship levy to August.
The UK Global Screen Fund is administered by the BFI and backed by the Dcms. The initial £7m fund was launched in April 2021 under the previous Conservative government as a one-year pilot initiative to boost international development and distribution opportunities for the UK’s independent screen sector following the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union.
In 2022, the Dcms committed to a three-year extension.
