Absence (2013) Review
Absence is yet another entry in the seemingly never ending series of found footage horror movies that just keep coming out. This one is very much like one of the most famous and influential films in this subgenre The Blair Witch Project. Too much like it at times in fact. This isnt to say its a terrible film it isnt. Unfortunately its also not a particularly good film either. A young pregnant woman named Liz (Erin Wray) has doctors baffled when her close to term embryo has disappeared from her womb. The police come to investigate but she says that she has nothing to do with it. In fact she really cant remember what it is that happened. Her brother Evan (Ryan Smale) and husband Rick (Eric Matheny) decide to go to a log cabin...

'Absence' makes the heart grow fonder, which is likely not the case in Jimmy Loweree's horror debut. 'Absence' will kick off a limited Us theatrical release from tomorrow (5 July) and deals with expectant mother Liz who loses her unborn baby, literally, during her pregnancy. So what do we think? Shock Interview: Absence Director Jimmy Loweree
Absence is a film that challenges the audience to find its own truths. Not just within the plot, but in the basics of family dynamics.

Opening theatrically on July 5th, Absence is the story of Evan (Ryan Smale, Damage). A young college student whose sister Liz (Erin Way, “Alphas”), has had her unborn baby disappear. To coup with a suspicious town, he and his brother in-law, Rick (Eric Matheny, J. Edgar), take her away to a secluded mountain community. As Evan attempts to document his sister’s recovery, strange things begin to happen which will test their family bond. Someone or something clearly wants more.

Shock Till You Drop recently spoke with writer/director Jimmy Loweree about the challenges of creating his first feature, crafting the perfect characters, and engaging the audience.

Review: Absence
What if you were pregnant and woke up to find that your child was gone. No trace, no memory, you just are no longer pregnant. Imagine the implications, not only within the family, but from others outside. What would that do to you? More importantly, what if that was just the beginning of the nightmare? These are the questions posed at the start of Jimmy Loweree debut feature, Absence.

The film opens in the Hospital where Liz (Erin Way, “Alphas”) is recovering after having her child seemingly kidnapped. Even worse, the child was unborn! Her ex-military husband, Rick (Eric Matheny, J. Edgar), takes her out of town along with her brother, Evan (Ryan Smale, Damage), who is attempting to document his sister’s recovery and selfishly complete a film assignment for college at the same time. The tension is immediate, and constant. Evan is one of those guys that we...
