The controversial winner of Best Original Anime at the 2025 Anime Awards was also one of the most pirated anime series of 2024. Ninja Kamui, the adult action anime by the Season 1 director of Jujutsu Kaisen, was an illegal streaming hit during its initial run on Cartoon Network's Toonami block on Adult Swim.
Jason DeMarco, the co-creator of Toonami and senior vice president of Anime and Action Series/Longform for Warner Bros. Animation, was interviewed by the Toonami Faithful podcast about his work on the famed anime-action block, as well as his current position at Wba. DeMarco discussed Ninja Kamui, which was recently renewed for two brand-new seasons. Ninja Kamui’s surprise multi-season renewal announement followed an unexpected win for Best Original Anime at this year's Crunchyroll Anime Awards -- an upset considering the mixed reception to Season 1 and its more critically acclaimed competition, such as Girls Band Cry and Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night.

Anime has truly taken off in recent years, and with that, new fans are always looking for good places to start. Shows like Dragon Ball, One Piece, My Hero Academia, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are often easy recommendations because of their fun stories and great animation, and more often than not, they do a great job of turning newcomers into diehard fans.
There are plenty of great anime for beginners, but unfortunately, the opposite is also true. As is always the case, plenty of anime simply aren’t worth watching because of bad writing, poor visuals, or some combination of the two, and it’s to the point that some anime are so bad that they could turn newcomers off of anime entirely if they’re the first ones someone watches. A few anime of that scale are particularly worth highlighting, and with any luck, no one will be so...

CloverWorks, the Japanese animation studio behind hits like Spy x Family, has released a brand-new trailer for its upcoming theatrical movie about three young men acquiring telepathic powers from a mystical hedgehog-like creature. Fureru, releasing this fall, also features the creative team behind Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day.
The movie's official X (formerly Twitter) account shared the latest trailer for Fureru. The initial teaser from early July advertised the main creative team behind Fureru, including Tatsuyuki Nagai (director), Mari Okada (writer and director) and Masayoshi Tanaka (character designer). The trio -- who commonly go by the name of the Super Peace Busters from the childhood friend group of Anohana -- worked on the 2011 TV anime series and 2013 movie, as well as The Anthem of the Heart and Her Blue Sky. This newly-released trailer digs deeper into the main story of Fureru, which marries the supernatural with coming-of-age elements.

Another fantastic month has come to a close with May, starting with Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night; it continues to be one of the season's most endearing and top-notch anime. Much like how Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! and A Sign of Affection were for Winter. We also saw the return of Netflix's hidden gem, Blood of Zeus.

"So Precious" by Asaka embodies the essence of Laid-Back Camp: focusing on the little things. "1 Nichi wa 25 Jikan" by Anna Tsurushima reflects the teamwork of the Jelee group in Jellyfish Can't Swim In the Night, and the struggles of being a creative. "fam!" by CHiCO captures the comedic energy and colorful style of Mission: Yokazura Family.
Something that anime fans always get excited about during each season is when new shows unveil their opening and ending themes. Despite being far less recognizable compared to opening themes, ending themes are used as bookends for episodes, and will oftentimes carry more emotional, character, or plot related elements. While this isn't always the case, it's still a crucial part of producing an anime that deserves far more recognition.

Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night is a standout anime for LGBTQ+ representation, especially with the development of the romantic relationship between Mahiru and Kano. The anime deviates from the norm by explicitly portraying yuri content. It remains uncertain if Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night will follow through on its LGBTQ+ focus until the end, but the potential impact on positive representation in animation is significant.

Characters in Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night change their hair colors to symbolize reinventing themselves, tied to the show's theme. Hair dye in the anime serves as an intentional storytelling device, adding personality to the characters and jabbing at industry norms. The significance of the hair coloring relates to characters' desires to escape their past circumstances and reinvent themselves.
The urban drama Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night might display outlandish hair colors like other anime, but this detail is cleverly incorporated into the characterization. Three of the four leads changed their natural hair colors to what they are in the show. Not only does this ground the oft-overlooked visual element, but it also ties it into the show's overarching theme of reinventing oneself.
While Kano, Mei, and Kiwi look for all the world like any other anime character, Jellyfish has taken care to show them before and after they change their appearances.
