Minami Takayama in Détective Conan (1996)
Anime Review: Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deductions (2023) by Shouta Ibata
Minami Takayama in Détective Conan (1996)
The whodunnit premise and the Sherlock/Watson dynamics have given birth to countless works of fiction across all entertainment industries throughout the years. As expected, the anime industry could not stay away, and series like “Detective Conan,” the more recent “Moriarty the Patriot,” and the extreme “Undead Murder Farce” highlight the fact quite eloquently. The latest entry in this line is “Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deductions,” which moves mostly towards comedy while also including a rather dark subtext.

Shonen Jump's Most Popular Romcom Has Ended, But Its New Anime Gives Fans Something to Look Forward to
Image
One of Shnen Jump's best recent romcoms has ended, but fans have a lot to look forward to. You and I Are Polar Opposites has received no shortage of praise from critics and fans alike, securing top spots in several rankings and lapping up award nominations. Alongside other emerging favorites like Blooming Love, You and I Are Polar Opposites can be considered emblematic of Shnen Jump's readership's increasing demand for sensitive, relatable love stories.

You and I Are Polar Opposites has been lauded for breaking away from shonen and shoujo romance tropes. Its premise, on the surface, seems fairly stock: a shy boy meets an outgoing girl. The appeal of the series rests in how it subverts expectations while working with a familiar premise. Full of heart and composed of organic character dynamics, You and I Are Polar Opposites has a long story ahead, even if its own narrative has just ended.

Undead Girl Murder Farce (2023)
Anime Review: Undead Unluck (2023-2024) by Yuki Yase
Undead Girl Murder Farce (2023)
It seems that in the anime world, at least one title that is both completely f**ked up and brilliant comes out every year. Last year it was “Undead Murder Farce”, before that there was “Chainsaw Man” and so on. This year’s “treat” is definitely “Undead Unluck” based on the manga by Yoshifumi Tozuka.

Where to watch

That this is a special title becomes evident from the first scenes of the first episode, where Fuuko Izumo, a girl whose superpower is Unluck, and at some point was responsible for an incident that left more than 200 people dead, including her parents, is about to commit suicide. Before she can, however, she is rescued by a butt-naked superhero named Undead, who kidnaps her and forces her to explain her powers at his hideout. He also explains (kind of) that he has amazing regenerative abilities and desires to die the best death possible,...

Metallic Rouge is the Perfect Way to Celebrate Bones' 25th Anniversary
Image
Since Metallic Rouge was announced at Fuji TV Anime Lineup Presentation 2023, it was clear that the new anime series from the prestigious Bones studio would be an emotive way to commemorate the first 25 years of the company made by ex-key members of Sunrise Studio (now Bandai Namco Filmworks). Most anime enthusiasts know Bones for series like My Hero Academia , Fullmetal Alchemist (both adaptations), Bungo Stray Dogs , Mob Psycho 100 and movies like Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop and Josee, the Tiger and the Fish . But true fans of the studio’s vast filmography know that their original works had an important impact on the anime industry since their beginning. So, why is Metallic Rouge so perfect to celebrate Bones’ first 25 years? Impressive Original Stories As a futuristic mystery thriller, the strongest element of the story is how Toshizo Nemoto ( Log Horizon ) and Yutaka Izubuchi ( Space Battleship Yamato 2199 ) tell the story of...

Undead Murder Farce Is A Series That Oozes Style
Image
What do you get when you have a series with a trio featuring a half-oni/half-human, an immortal severed head in a bird cage, and a tough-as-nails maid that can beat up just about anyone? You get a really fun show in Undead Murder Farce , but also a series that has style for days. Even on its own with just the story and mysteries it tells, Undead Murder Farce would still probably be one of my favorite shows of the last year. The stylistic decisions with regard to shot composition, character and environmental design, scene transitions, music, and generally how it looks — amongst other aspects — elevate the show to becoming not only more fun to watch, but something that’s pretty special as well. One of the first things you’ll notice when watching episodes or even just seeing screenshots is that character design was an important aspect of the overall production.

10 Best Anime Openings of 2023
Image
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead has one of the best openings of the year, matching the joy of the concept while infusing zombie tropes with color and brightness. Undead Girl Murder Farce's opening merges different styles and introduces famous characters, capturing the fun and wild nature of the show. Vinland Saga's opening represents Thorfinn's trauma and the dark beauty of the series, seamlessly transitioning between morbid details.

2023 was a superb year for anime openings, releasing some of the best in recent memory. Anime openings are very important both for hooking viewers and for getting them in the right frame of mind to watch the show attached to them. However, this doesn't mean that they can't be artistic in their own right.

Openings are a combination of animation and music that, at their best, can serve as a perfect encapsulation of their anime. An opening can thus be...

Best Anime Of Summer 2023
Image
Each anime season is an exciting blend of brand-new titles, new seasons of returning shows, and even anime movies and other features. While no anime season has yet reached the incredible heights of the Fall 2022 anime season, the Summer 2023 anime season did well for itself and offered a remarkable variety of shows for fans to enjoy inside with the air conditioning on.

A few titles in the Summer 2023 season seemed promising but fell flat after they began airing, such as the game-based Liar, Liar and the fun but forgettable My Tiny Senpai. By contrast, the Summer 2023 season also featured some heavy-hitting titles that proved summer isn't always the weakest anime season of the year. With these titles, Summer 2023 easily matched or even surpassed the Winter and Spring seasons from earier this year.

Why Undead Girl Murder Farce is a Must See for fans of BBC's Sherlock
Image
Undead Girl Murder Farce is more than just a chilling, yet quirky title, it's a compelling new anime series that breathes new life into the whodunit genre. With a protagonist whose deductive prowess rivals that of the infamous Sherlock Holmes, and a narrative teeming with twists and dark appeal, it draws a parallel to the stories of the world's most infamous detective, and does what BBC's Sherlock did in regard to telling stories and weaving in characters from different lore into the same world in an innovative way.

A curious blend of intellect and intrigue connects the protagonists of this tale Tsugaru Shinuchi, an Oni – a half-human, half-demon 'Demon Killer', and Aya Rind, an immortal being who has been beheaded by a mysterious man who is also in possession of her body. Undead Girl Murder Farce sees both protagonists journeying together across continents and solving cases and crossing paths...

How a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Reference Made It Into Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem
Image
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has been ongoing since 1987, but that didn't stop Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem's incredibly young cast member from pitching it to its director.

Script Coordinator Andrew Joustra recounted via X (formerly Twitter) the time Mutant Mayhem director Jeff Rowe asked which anime the cast liked. Joustra revealed that Micah Abbey [Donatello] picked JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and suggested that Donatello might have easily ended up sporting another hoodie, as just like that, "Donnie became a JoJo fan!"

Rowe had already prepared several references in his script, with iconic anime like Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan included in the script.

“Undead Murder Farce” Review – A Gothic Horror Supernatural Detective Anime About a Severed Head
Image
A bored executioner teams up with an immortal severed head and her combat maid to solve mysteries and fight monsters.

“You’re one of the monsters.”

Undead Murder Farce takes everything you know about gothic horror and murder mystery detective fiction and then stretches it almost cartoonishly out of proportion like it’s being watched through a funhouse mirror. Think you’ve seen your share of demon slayer stories? Then let’s throw in Jack the Ripper, Arsène Lupin, and Sherlock Holmes for good measure. Tired of the “monster of the week” genre? Well, what if Frankenstein’s Monster and the Phantom of the Opera were in the mix with vampires, werewolves, and every other supernatural creature imaginable? It’s elementary, my dear Renfield.

Oh yeah, and the main character is an immortal severed head.

All of that just scratches the surface of Undead Murder Farce, a supernatural detective anime...

The soon-to-be-released supernatural murder mystery project, which will hit Crunchyroll on July 5, features a creative assortment of creatures from across multiple cultures, mainly focused on Japanese and European folklore. Some of the most well-known monsters of all time appear in the series. These New Summer 2023 Anime Are Perfect for Fans of Historical Shows
Image
Historical anime series rarely get much traction each season. However, this summer, fans are in for a treat, as two historical novel series are getting original anime adaptations: Yugo Aosaki's Undead Girl Murder Farce and Akumi Agitogi's My Happy Marriage (Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon).

The two series have a commonality in that both encompass supernatural genre elements. The stories also occur in similar time frames: the late 19th century to the early 20th century, although the events happen in different regions with vastly different historical circumstances. Even so, these two anime are worth watching for history buffs and historical anime fans alike.
