To England, with Love

An enjoyable romantic mystery in southwest England

This may cover familiar ground in terms of fish-out-of-water romantic comedy shenanigans, but directors Tim Clague and Danny Stack, along with writer Grace Knight, breathe fresh and entertaining life into these tropes. Georgia Hirst's Ali heads to southwest England to solve a treasure hunt mystery tied up with her inheritance. Naturally, at first, this American finds the change of pace in rural Britain a little disconcerting, but soon she ingratiates herself with the locals, including obvious love interest Matthew (Sean Pogmore).

No prizes for guessing how it all works out, but this is a brief, breezy, diverting watch, with appealing leads and a modicum of comedic fun amid the love story. Some splendid scenery too. As a resident of southwest England, I did a fair bit of location spotting. All in all, well worth a look if romantic comedy is your thing.

Not for me thanks

No spoilers Just watch it if you can get past the first 14 minutes.

English clichés at their worst. Austin Powers would cringe. If this is the future of film, we are in for nightmare rest of our lives.

398 characters are needed for this review. I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'll hold back on the plot as much as possible.

I am not faultless as a human being so I could be totally wrong and have no business reviewing movies. I mean, I just come of the back of completing the entire Harry Wild series on Prime and my standards of British and Irish acting is based on people like Helen Mirren but come on , this is bad.

Waiting for others to review it.

Don't take my word for it!

Good locations

This movie utilises English locations and culture much better than the studio's earlier production 'Christmas in the Cotswolds'. The storyline has several original twists - indeed some parts are actually quite complicated for a rom-com, especially the genealogy, but that's realistic! Whilst there is a good age spread of characters, the eleven-year-old's skills are ridiculous and would give even adults an inferiority complex! So many big topics affecting Britain and beyond are covered eg expense of housing / kids and elderly / university / business / community etc as well as smaller issues like finding the perfect gift that it feels very down to earth and relatable, but with the escapism of the main mystery and local traditions. Despite such a large amount of content, there's enough relaxing scenes to refresh the viewer.
