Not as bad as everyone is making it out to be.

The story isn't great, but it's better than people on here are saying. It kept my attention and it wasn't predictable, and that's all I was hoping for. The characters are obviously not native English speakers, and they go from English to French randomly throughout the movie. It is a good depiction of how tragedies bring out the best in some people, and the worst in others. The acting is better than I thought it would be, as were the effects. It kept you on your toes and you're never quite sure what's going to happen next. I've definitely sat through much worse than this. It's worth a watch if you've got some time to kill.

Why can't the French make a science-fiction movie!!

The story is incredible. For a filmmaker who wants to create a science fiction movie, this story is like a goldmine. The locations chosen for the film are also very successful. The eerie, unsettling nature of the environment effectively amplifies the fear born out of helplessness. I genuinely wanted to give this film a high rating, but there are several flaws in it. Here's why:

The balance between the horror elements is not well-established. At times, scenes are overly frightening, while at other times, there's an odd calmness.

There are issues with the acting as well, though it's not due to the performances of the actors. The problem lies in the transitions and connections between the characters. There is almost no dialogue between the family portrayed in the movie and the other characters, which weakens the sense of realism.

A better storytelling approach could have been achieved, but many opportunities were missed. I don't think the problem is the budget, either. In its current form, the film has the potential to evoke the kind of fear that big-budget American sci-fi films can create. The issue isn't with the visual effects; it's with the screenplay. The flow of horror elements and the inadequacy of the dialogue's narrative seriously impact the film's success.

The audience feels scared, but they cannot fully connect with the film. However, I'm sure it won't take long before Americans buy the screening rights and create their own version. With a massive budget, they'll probably remake this film and won't even mention its name. I only wish this film had been executed better.

So Silly

So many stupid plot holes and stupid scenarios it starts to drag early in.

The stupid father, the really stupid kids who continually get themselves into trouble, the daughter in particular is really annoying.

The herd of carnivorous rampaging crabs is so ridiculous it is laughable, they move at a breathtaking pace and eat meat ? Where did they come from ? Outer space ?

Other stupid bits : within days of the disaster everything looks a 100 years old, the few humans that survive all want to kill each other, on sight, immediately, without thought. Where did all the dead fish go ? How did one little boat survive ? When will the family stop crying & screaming ? Way too much emotion, over and over. When did the mum become a crack shot ? How many triumphant moments within moments of despair can one film have ?

And then the sea comes back to round a fun holiday off, just silly.

Emilie Dequenne's last stand

I watch this movie because it is the last one starring the poor Emilie Dequenne, before her death in March 2025. Surprising science fiction, dystopic, a new kind of films since several years, one decade now. And I am afraid that will increase in the future. This film is rather brave, daring for a French film, but that's not the first of this kind. I don't remember the other titles, but this plot sounds familiar to me. The feature ENFIN SEULS, starring Gilles Lelouche, seems to be rather close to this one. Curious film, but worth the watch. French film industry does its best to propose modern topics. RIP Emilie. Your last film was a modern action woman character, a role that you never had before. I will miss you very much.

Suspend all logic for this movie

This movie is entertaining if there is nothing else on. The plot is silly; the magnetic poles somehow reverse and the ocean drains to the other side of the earth? And the speed at which it happens is comical. Miles of water goes missing in a matter of hours? Sure....

The family is pretty stupid as well, especially the mom. She spends most of the time being hysterical and moaning. Terrible actress.

The movie itself is frustrating to watch in that for a while they are speaking English, then about halfway through they switch to French. To make matters worse, the captioning for the movie is the worst I've ever seen. Often makes no sense whatsoever.

The ending of the movie is unsatisfying and pretty stupid.

I give it a 3 at best. Okay if you have absolutely nothing else to watch.

perhaps the biggest cinematic waste of time and patience of my life.

If they hired someone who could tell a story, this could have been at least a decent movie. It had conditions for it. There is pornography with better screenwriting. The only good thing about this movie is the deceiving trailer. In my opinion the director and the screenwriter shoud be banned from the film industry. This is so, so, but so bad. Its an insult to anyone´s intelect. If you intend to watch this, consider yourself warned. Try a reality show or those late night tv sales. Its more satisfying. I feel so cheated that I wrote a critic for the first time in my life, just because I couldn´t let this slide.

Worst in everything

This show is an absolute waste of time, and watching it is not only frustrating but downright nerve-wracking. The characters are, without a doubt, some of the most idiotic I've ever encountered in every possible way. The storyline is utterly nonsensical, lacking any coherence or sense, and the random, unclear mix of languages only adds to the confusion. There are countless reasons why this is a show to avoid at all costs.

The characters, in particular, are unbelievably foolish, with the young boy standing out as the worst offender. His actions and behavior are so immature and ridiculous that it feels like they should have been celebrating his 3rd birthday instead of his 13th. The complete lack of logic or realism in his character makes it impossible to take him or the story seriously.

Survive delivers twists, not depth

First, I have to say the events in Survive were quite different from what I expected based on the trailer. The basic plot-of the ocean suddenly retreating and the main characters finding themselves at the bottom of the exposed seabed-was as advertised, but pretty much everything that happened afterward took a different direction. On the plus side, it turned out to be a post-apocalyptic survival movie, and it was far more unpredictable than I imagined.

Overall, the acting is decent, but the main characters are absolutely beyond annoying. They frustrated me so much that I couldn't help but shout at the screen while watching. There are two things I really dislike in post-apocalyptic horror/action thriller/disaster movies: extremely irritating characters who do everything they shouldn't, and the tendency for survivors to turn on each other. Survive has plenty of both.

I really liked the core idea of the retreating sea and the characters going on a survival adventure on what used to be the ocean floor. It's a somewhat unique concept, and it reminded me of a sci-fi comic book I read as a kid that had a similar premise. However, the actual execution of the film wasn't great. The special effects are solid-I have no complaints there-but the story had so much untapped potential.

Survive also includes plenty of subtle nods to iconic blockbusters. For example, the family's boat is named Orca, just like the one used to hunt the shark in Jaws. At one point, a character says, "We're all going to die down here"-a line made famous by the Resident Evil series and overused in many other films. There's also a scene with a submarine and a massive wave that reminded me of Interstellar, and so on.

That said, the biggest surprise for me was that most of the dialogue is in French. This wasn't obvious at all from the trailer-they probably compiled most of the English lines into it. So, be prepared to read subtitles if you don't understand French.

Overall, I expected more, but Survive wasn't that bad. In fact, I think the rating it has should be a bit higher.

I really enjoyed this movie a lot ...

This movie certainly will not pass everyone's sniff test but I loved it! I was an 80's kid and I loved to watch the old 70's apocalyptic style movies that were low budget fun like Damnation Alley. I almost gave it 10 stars but let's be honest. 7 stars for pure fun entertainment 70's style. This is a preposterous story that doesn't really make sense so movie snobs will not enjoy this. It is about a family on vacation on a boat that experience an apocalyptic event that results in massive casualties and destruction around the world that they avoided by being on water. They are left in a new world without any modern luxuries, food or water. This is their survival story. The acting and writing are just average but the story is fun and the environment they created is believable. Again, the story is silly with massive holes but if you can enjoy campy 70's movies I think you will enjoy this. I sort of loved it.

No sympathy for dumb characters

Sorry, movie is a waste if you don't like the main characters. Mom especially is spineless and especially stupid.

This is a case of too dumb to live, so no sympathy for the characters, equals no interest if they live or die.

Bad writing all around and the music department pretty much drives the movie telling you ooooo the bad guy is limping along to get the family, time to be scared.

Waste of time to watch, wouldn't recommend to anyone.... don't know how else to say how God awful this movie was other than to fill the review qouta... so this movie was épouvantable, beyond épouvantable.......

Total waste of time

First of all, I'm French, so that's no French bashing.

That "thing" is a complete waste of time : nothing is to be saved. No story, no rhythm, no purpose, no inspiration, not even good SFX !!

There are some good French SF movies, this one is definitely not one of them.

I've enjoyed it as much as I would have enjoyed being tortured in a very slow, very sadistic way.

I cannot believe such a lame project has been funded, talk about a waste of money and time.

The actors do their best, but you can feel them realizing that they are aboard a doomed vessel.

Fly, you fools. Run as quickly as you can, you will never get that time back !

Ridiculous

Anyone who gives this movie more than 3 is on drugs, it's the worst movie I've watched for a while. The characters are not smart, the mom is so useless it's sad. The bad guy wouldn't last 5 minutes in real life and the daughter pathetic. He did have a an interesting premise, if you have a low IQ. Why they start talking French half way through is perfect, says all you need to know about this nonsense of a movie. Thought Hollywood was making crap movies, but the French have joined them it seems.so if you've got nothing else to watch, like paint drying or ants crawling on the floor, give this ludicrous movie a watch !

Possibly the stupidest movie ever

Unless you're suffering from severe brain trauma you're not going to be able to enjoy this film. I mean if you're in a coma or something it could be passible.

So the premise here is that the oceans magically go away. In reality when there's one little wave on the ocean it causes a massive tsunami that crushes everything. If the entire ocean was going to relocate then you would Etch A Sketch everything out of existence. But you wouldn't have a couple sitting on a boat who suddenly find themselves parked on the ocean floor.

I'm serious what grade 3 drop out wrote this movie? This is the stupidest thing ever. Don't even bother reading the rest of this review. Just move on to anything else. This movie is garbage.

For a Selective Audience

A Gripping, Realistic Apocalyptic Drama for a Selective Audience This low-budget, apocalyptic movie stands out for its refreshing approach to the genre. By focusing on a family's survival story, led by a courageous female character, the film delivers a gripping narrative that eschews sensational disaster scenes and special effects.

Shot on real locations, the movie's grounded realism immerses the viewer in the world of the story. The method acting is impressive, adding depth to the characters' struggles.

While this film may not appeal to everyone, it will resonate with a selective audience seeking a more nuanced, character-driven apocalyptic drama. The pacing is well-balanced, making for a compelling watch.

Overall, I'd rate this movie 3/5. It's not a masterpiece, but its unique perspective and realistic approach make it a worthy watch for fans of independent cinema. In fact, the story has enough potential to be developed into a series, exploring the characters' journeys in more depth. Sudden End to Story wasn't expecting :(

Where to start?

This is probably one of the worst movies of 2024, there are no 'good' bits in this 1 hour 30 mins of purgatory cinematic disaster. The only thing that keeps you wasting the electricity to keep it on is the fascination to see if it can get any worse - oh and it does - it certainly doesn't disappoint in that.area.

The acting is abundantly wooden and I'm sure the cast will watch this back in horror that they even agreed to participate in the weak story line - then again it needs a certain kind of actor to participate in this kind of film as it's about the limit of their talent - surely the director and or producers must have realised after 3 mins in of shooting that this was going the wrong way completely - o would have personally abandoned set and run for the hills with whatever reputation I had in tact. To see this film through must have taken either Herculean strength or a mental disorder - I'm not sure which?! You decide.

There are no favourite bits in this film however the most random ones were the boy having a pee in a random toilet left on the sea bed and of course the 'crab monsters' that will never win any special effects awards even in a parallel world. Proves I watched it all the way through tho and am waiting for the cast and crew to commend me with a plaque for bravery for achieving this - or I will be committed by my family very soon.

Seriously probably the most irrelevant, inconsistent, unbelievable movie I have seen in a long time and everyone Involved shoulld hang their head in shame - I can imagine the 'wrap' up party after the film wrapped for editing must have been a ball full of embarrassing lies told to make them all feel better about having been involved in this French tripe!! Go on watch it I dare you!!

Terribly underrated!!!

Do you like movies that pull you in with story? Movies that have that lost skill of making something interesting without hyper CGI? This movie is just that. Starts easy, suddenly natural event takes tragic turn and bring society to an end. Movie is made with a lost skill that that today is replaced with hyped up CGI and usually naked women and buffed men. This is how movies should be made. It is the story that keeps you locked in. A respect director and actors for making something so I testing with very limited budget. If this director and actors has power of CGI this movie would be blockbuster. Absolutely loved it. Please rate movies based on skill, not amount of CGI. Yes there are plot holes, yes a lot of things missing, but movie is made with such a limited budget it is amazing that it was this interesting. If you watch movies for story, you will like it. I am generous with rating because they deserve bigger budget to make something spectacular. I can only imagine what director and actors would make if they had 100 mil.
