Showbox boards Edwin’s Indonesian body horror ‘Sleep No More’
Image
Exclusive: South Korea’s Showbox has landed international sales rights to Sleep No More, the upcoming body horror feature from Indonesian filmmaker Edwin, and will begin talks at the Cannes market.

It marks a significant step for the company in expanding its slate beyond Korea, representing Showbox’s first title directly solely by an Indonesian filmmaker and produced by an Indonesian outfit (it previously handled Indonesian-language film The Verdict but this was produced and presented by Korean companies and co-directed by both Korean and Indonesian directors).

Sleep No More marks the latest feature from Edwin, who became the first director...

The film follows a group of seasonal workers arriving at a sugar mill, only to find themselves tormented by vengeful demons. As terrifying events unfold, they must unravel the mystery of what awakened these dark forces — and whether they can escape and return home before it is too late.

The 30 Best Asean Films of 2024
Image
The progress of the cinema of the region is undisputed. With governments allocating more money in the cinema in a number of the countries of the union, streamers and particularly Neftflix investing heavily, along with foreign companies as in the case of Korean Cj Entertainment in Vietnam, the unique stories from a series of regions where everyday life and the supernatural always went hand in hand, finally found a space to blossom. Following suit from Malaysia, which had a tremendous 2023, Indonesia also made a leap forward this year, headed by a rather strong box office and a catalogue of movies that moved beyond 200 in 2024, even if more than 60 of them are horror movies. Filipino cinema, however, is still on top, in a place it does not seem to lose, particularly since, industry-wise, local cinema seems to be the most organized in the region. Vietnam also seems to on the rise,...

The Year of Indonesian Cinema
Image
Following a 2023 that definitely belonged to Malaysia, with titles like “Tiger Stripes“, “Abang Adik”, “La Luna” and a number of others, it seems that 2024 belongs to another Asean country, Indonesia. For us that we have been following local cinema for some years, this does not come as a surprise, since the stories were already there and it seemed that the industry just needed some nurturing in order to fully bloom. Following investment by Cj, it was when streamers and particularly Netflix started investing in local content, that the leap that was bound to happen finally became reality. Headed by Joko Anwar, Kamila Andini, Kimo Stamboel, Timo Tjahjanto and a number of others, local cinema seems to be in good hands, as the movies in the following list eloquently highlight. At the same time, the same can be said about the actors, with names like Laura Basuki, Shenina Cinnamon, Yusuf Mahardika,...

“Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly” (2008) was the Indonesian filmmaker Edwin's first feature film which was very well received and earned him several awards including the Netpac Award at the Taipei Horse Film Festival; the Silver Montgolfiere at the Nantes Three Continents Festival and the Fipresci Prize at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. For his “Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash” (2021) he won Best Director at the Indonesian 42nd Citra Awards and the Golden Leopard at the Switzerland Locarno Film Festival.

“Borderless Fog”, original title “Kabut Berduri”, is Edwin's latest crime thriller streaming on Netflix. The intense story takes place at the Indonesia-Malaysia border, in the thick and steaming rainforest of Borneo Island where the Dayaks, Malay and Chinese live. Borderless Fog Review: An Intriguing Southeast Asian Mystery
Image
Indonesia’s easternmost island of Borneo provides the evocative setting for Edwin’s mystery thriller Borderless Fog. We’re introduced to detective Sanja from the capital Jakarta, assigned to a troubling case in the remote border region between Malaysia and Indonesia. A gruesome discovery kicks off a tangled web of small-town secrets, supernatural lore, and political tensions—all with human lives hanging in the balance.

Sanja proves a compelling lead, sharp yet sympathetic as she navigates local distrust and official resistance. Joined by officers like troubled idealist Thomas, she pursues a sadistic killer traversing the fuzzy jurisdiction between nations. Clues emerge from the area’s deep roots yet point to modern crimes like human trafficking too. As Sanja draws closer to the disturbing truth, personal demons also resurface, requiring courage to confront.

Blending crime drama tropes with cultural authenticity, Borderless Fog transports viewers to Borneo’s verdant landscapes and diverse communities.

Thomas’ Death And Character In ‘Borderless Fog’ Explained
Image
In the movie Borderless Fog, one character really stands out: Police Inspector Thomas from the Borneo Island police department. He’s the guy digging into the serial murders happening along the Indonesia-Malaysia border. How did he contribute to the investigation, what was his motive, and what eventually happened to him? This article will delve into his character to provide a closer look.

Why did Thomas work for Panca?

In the small village on Borneo Island, right on the border of Indonesia and Malaysia, there was a lot of tension and conflict between the Dayaks, Chinese, and Malaysians. Violence was common, and sadly, many people ended up getting hurt or even trafficked. The Dayaks suffered the most by facing brutal treatment and extortion, while their cries for help often went unheard because the police themselves were involved in these crimes. Among the Dayaks, there was a guy named Thomas who decided to join the police force.

Bujang’s Death In ‘Borderless Fog’ Explained: Did He Kill For The Dayak Tribe?
Image
To be honest, I really loved the ending of Borderless Fog. It has so much to unwrap. And not just the ending; the entire narrative of the film kept me on the edge of my seat. [Spoiler Alert] In the climax scene, Bujang, the tea seller-cum-border guard, confessed to killing the corrupt army official Thoriq Herdian, who had been working for the local mobster Agam Bin Yusof. Later, Bujang found Umi trafficking some underaged kids across the conflicted Indonesia-Malaysia border and decided to unleash his wrath upon the greedy woman who was selling innocent lives for money. Bujang had been a part of the Dayak community that dwelled on Borneo Island. The traffickers, like Agam, had been taking advantage of the conflict between the two neighboring countries. They knew that the Indonesian and the Malaysian authorities weren’t supportive of each other’s investigation into the matter of human trafficking, which allowed...

‘Borderless Fog’ Ambong’s Ghost, Explained: Is The Film Based On A True Story Or Inspired By Real Events?
Image
Fear holds a man back from becoming a monster. And that fear can be either of God or of Evil. Because if you do believe in them, these supernatural powers will haunt you forever if you ever dare overstep your morals. The same could be said for urban myths and folklore. They often narrate the story of a supernatural being that protects the natives and punishes the outsiders who sin against them. These are some sacred entities in different cultures whose stories have been passed through generations so as to instill fear in the locals and to protect them from their own demons. In Netflix’s Borderless Fog, director Edwin presents a fictional tale of a communist ghost named Ambong that dwells in the forest of Borneo Island. It belonged to one of the prominent leaders of a real-life Paraku insurgent force that operated near the border state of Sarawak...

‘Borderless Fog’ Movie Spoilers, Summary And Ending Twist, Explained: Is Thomas Dead?
Image
Borderless Fog is a gripping movie on Netflix set on the Indonesia-Malaysia border. This region is home to various immigrant communities like the Malay, Dayak, and Chinese people. The cultural and local tensions here are intense, and it shows in the movie’s chilling storyline of a series of gruesome murders. These murders are brutal, with bodies found beheaded and heads attached to different bodies, almost like the killer is putting on a morbid performance to make a point. The local people blame Ambong, the spiritual god of the forest, for these horrific acts. But the truth is darker—these are revenge crimes by people fighting against oppression and injustice. The story kicks off dramatically with a body falling from the sky, and in a twisted artistic display, the head on it belongs to someone else. This bizarre scene prompts the police to call in Detective Sanja Arunika from Jakarta.

‘Borderless Fog’ Netflix Review: The Indonesian Thriller Is A Breath Of Fresh Air
Image
Borderless Fog, or Kabut Berduri, is Netflix’s new Indonesian adventure that comes with high production value and unique storytelling. The investigative drama thriller is an entertaining mix of folklore, local culture, and detective work that keeps your cogs turning from start to finish. The film follows a detective named Sanja from Jakarta, who is assigned a special case in the Malaysia-Indonesia border region. It’s a complicated web of community disputes mixed with a forest spirit to create an eerie atmosphere. Of course, there’s the dark and terrifying premise of the film, heads rolling around like footballs in a children’s playground or the Indonesian countryside, which is beautiful for the most part but occasionally unsettling to look at. Borderless Fog is an apt title for the film, which seemed to almost sound like “headless chicken” to me; however, watching the movie cleared out that misconception instantly. It...

‘Borderless Fog’ Ending Explained: Who Killed Bujang? Who Is The Boy In Final Credits Scene?
Image
The Indonesian mystery crime thriller Borderless Fog directed by Edwin and starring Putri Marino, unfolds at the Indonesia-Malaysia border on Borneo Island. Police investigation began in the area when a decapitated body was discovered. The matter was taken up by the Indonesian police, and it was found that the body and the head belonged to two different individuals. The head was of First Sergeant Thoriq Herdian, and the body belonged to a Dayak activist, Juwing, who had gone missing six weeks before the discovery. Inspector Sanja arrived at the local police station from Jakarta to conduct a thorough investigation. The head of the local police department, Officer Panca, was not happy with her involvement. The border area harbored several secrets, and he feared Sanja would try to dig too deep. Sanja soon figured out that the murders were not committed at random; there was a bigger purpose behind them.

Putri Marino in La frontière des ombres (2024)
“Borderless Fog” Thriller from Indonesia on Netflix: a story of mystery and a lot of police tension
Putri Marino in La frontière des ombres (2024)
“Borderless Fog” is an Indonesian thriller movie starring Putri Marino, Yoga Pratama and Lukman Sadi.

Another interesting thriller that comes to us from Indonesia in which, this time, jurisdictions are mixed and between the borders of Malaysia and Indonesia to get into very lurid topics, but without the film wanting to go beyond the thriller.

In addition, it informs us about a terrible situation on the island of Borneo in a case that, although fictional, has many tinges of reality.

A well-set thriller that mixes superstition with borderline reality in a complicated place.

Plot

On the island of Borneo, between Malaysia and Indonesia, a policewoman arrives from Jakarta to investigate a terrible crime: two decapitated men. There she is not well received, but her investigations lead her to the legend of Ambong, a kind of ghost that lives in the fog of the jungle.

But the detective gradually discovers a...

Everything Coming to Netflix in August 2024
Image
Look, there’s no way around this: August is a slow month for TV, and Netflix isn’t any different. Splashy fall TV is right around the corner, but August seems best designed to catch up on some of the best TV of the year so far that you may have missed.

It’s not a total wasteland, however: “Emily in Paris” returns this month for Season 4 Part 1. The internet loves to make fun of it, but the dreamed is truly one of the best brain-dead shows to watch when it’s too hot to do much of anything else. Lily Collins wears the most amazing outfits! There’s lots of kissing! Why do you think you’re better than it?! Much like other recent Netflix hits such as “Bridgerton,” “Emily in Paris” Season 4 will be divided into two parts, with Part 1 dropping August 15 and Part 2 debuting a month later.
