Prior to October 2023, Tara Strong was cast in the role of Bill the Orphan. Strong was fired after posting a controversial tweet about Islamic people. On their official account, Boxtown stated that it was "not a hard decision," and launched open auditions for the role via social media.
Sarah Lew, who voices Bill the Orphan, was hired based on her TikTok audition.
In February 2024, creator Charlie Gavin announced an expansion of the universe, including a miniseries of chibi-style animations, and Bill the Orphan having an in-character podcast.
