The idea of a Barney movie being released by A24, produced by Academy Award-winning actor DanielKaluuya, and written by and starring Emmy-winning actress Ayo Edebiri sounds like a joke in an SNL sketch. However, it most certainly is real. In fact, A24's Barney might be one of the most fascinating IP adaptations since Barbie. The Barney movie was first announced in 2019 but now appears to be gaining some real traction as Kaluuya is putting a strong creative team together for the live-action reboot.
Variety reports that Ayo Edebiri has joined the in-development Barney movie as both screenwriter and star. Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions is partnering with A24 to produce the film, working closely with Mattel Films, the owners of the Barney IP. Even though Kaluuya has been overseeing Barney's creative development as lead producer, he is not expected to star in the film. Details on the plot of Barney are under wraps,...

David Joyner might not be the most recognizable name to television fans, but his work as the actor inside the suit of Barney certainly is. Joyner played the benevolent purple dinosaur on “Barney & Friends” for a decade from 1991 to 2001. On a recent episode of the “Generation Barney” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), he remembered a time when the Ku Klux Klan banned their children from watching “Barney” because Joyner is Black. The actor laughed at such ludicrousness.
“I get a call when I’m doing ‘Barney’ from my hometown news reporter, from the Decatur Herald & Review, and he asked me to comment on an article that was in Esquire magazine,” Joyner said. “I had no idea what he was talking about, so he asked me if I would go get the magazine and then give him a call with a comment. With Barbie setting the stage on fire, Mattel learnt how much potential their toys hold. Though it made waves for its story (and the acting genius of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling), the toy giant realized that nostalgia can guide them to a new era of success. Not long after the Ryan Gosling starrer’s success, Mattel has officially announced its decision to come up with another series around a toy that has brought them great fortune over the years – Pingu.

Barbie giant Mattel is teaming up with award-winning animation studio Aardman (Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep, Wallace & Gromit) to co-develop a new stop-motion, animated Pingu television series.
The series is inspired by Mattel’s beloved cheeky penguin who lives in the South Pole and has stayed on our screens for decades, famous for his mischief and catchphrase, “Noot Noot!” Designed by Otmar Gutmann in the 1980s, the show first aired on the U.K.’s BBC One in 1990.
Josh Silverman, chief franchise officer of Mattel, told The Hollywood Reporter at MIPCOM Cannes on Monday: “You couldn’t ask for a more perfect marriage [than between Mattel and Aardman]. I was just with their their team. We are overjoyed about the project. It’s going to be really, really special. From your imagination back to your TV screen, iconic purple dinosaur Barney returns this week with the new animated Max series “Barney’s World.”
In a bid to appeal to what Mattel chief franchise officer Josh Silverman dubs “newstalgia,” the reincarnation of the ’90s sensation is the latest entertainment project from the toy giant, which last year offered up its IP for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” and is now working on a live-action “Barney” movie with Daniel Kaluuya, a film based on the American Girl doll line and a release of a big-budget adaptation of “Masters of the Universe” with Amazon MGM Studios next June.
“Barney’s World,” which debuted Monday on Max and will have its linear launch Oct. 18 on Cartoon Network, is a prime example of how Mattel’s TV and film groups are working overtime to keep Millennial, Gen Z and preschool-aged consumers engaged heading into their eight decade of business.

Barney is leaving another big footprint on TV with the release of his new show Barney’s World… but what kind of real-life world is he stepping into? One where his messages of love and compassion will be accepted? Or one that will mock and vilify the character, as it did when Barney & Friends became a PBS hit in the 1990s? Warner Bros. Discovery and Mattel describe Barney’s World — premiering on Monday, October 14, on Max and on Friday, October 18, on Cartoon Network — as a new animated series featuring original music and updated takes on Barney classics. “The new Barney’s World is set in a playground, where Barney is joined by dinos Billy and Baby Bop and their three kid best friends David, Mel, and Vivie,” a synopsis adds. “Through action-packed, music-filled adventures together, Barney helps the kids and audiences explore big preschool emotions, showing them how to love themselves,...

Michelle Mendelovitz has stepped down as head of Mattel Television Studios, Variety has confirmed.
Mendelovitz joined the studio in November of last year, where she oversaw the development, production and distribution of Mattel’s slate of episodic content on broadcast and streaming globally. A new chief has yet to be named.
At Mattel Television Studios, Mendelovitz was recently involved in the new Barney the Dinosaur animated series, “Barney’s World,” for Max and Cartoon Network. The series, announced as part of Mattel’s Barney franchise relaunch, will premiere in 2024.
In April, Mattel Television Studios tapped three new executives for key roles: Sidney Clifton as head of creative for animation; Cory Bennett Lewis as head of production; and Amy Suh as head of creative for live action, scripted and unscripted. They reported directly to Mendelovitz.
Prior to her role at Mattel Television Studios, Mendelovitz served as an executive producer at Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s Hiddenlight Productions.

Mattel and Nelvana are also developing a CGI series called Barney's World, set to premiere next year. Mattel's CEO, Ynon Kreiz, assures that the Barney movie will not be odd, but instead will be fun, entertaining, and culturally oriented.
The famous and friendly purple dinosaur, Barney, is coming to the big screen with a film very different from anything that has been done with the character so far. And Mattel's CEO promises it will completely surprise audiences. Though it won't be "odd." First premiered on PBS in 1992, Barney & Friends has become one of the most successful children's television series of all time, thanks to its messages about friendship, love, family and stories that seek to teach real lessons to children.
