‘Time of Silence and Destruction,’ About the Writer Who Dragged Spanish Novel Into the 20th Century, Pounced on by Filmax (Exclusive)
Image
San Sebastian — Barcelona-based Filmax has acquired international sales rights to “Time of Silence and Destruction,” a bio-doc feature about Luis Martín-Santos who, along with great friend Juan Benet, revolutionized the Spanish novel, as James Joyce and William Faulkner had achieved decades before outside Spain.

Martin-Santos’ “Tiempo de Silencio” (1962) and Benet’s “Volverás a Región” (1967) not only broke with conventional social realism but dragged the Spanish novel into the 20th century using stream of consciousness and shifting narrators and were hugely influential on younger writers active down to this day, shifting novel’s focus from chronicle to a high-style and language.

Led by Martín-Santos’ daughter Rocío and son Luis, who were just children the the writer died tragically in a car accident in 1964, “Time of Silence and Destruction” sees them open boxes of Martín-Santos’ unpublished papers as they talk to the few surviving friends and colleagues, situating Martín-Santos in his context,...

Vampires Overrun Morbido-Sanfic Lab, From Ventana Sur Triple Winner ‘Upiro’ to Documentary ‘The Window Vampire’ (Exclusive)
Image
Now on its fourth year, the Santiago Film Festival’s Morbido-Sanfic Lab features an ever more diverse selection from Ibero-America.

As Morbido founder-ceo Pablo Guisa said of this year’s edition: “It has projects from multiple countries, several produced or directed by women as well as one LGBTQ-themed project and, for the first time, a documentary.” Vampire creatures abound in this crop.

Humberto Mazari, the helmer-scribe-producer behind one of the six projects, psychological thriller “The Alaska Summit” (“La Cumbre de Alaska),” is developing three comic book spinoffs which will further delve into the underworld of the summit and the creatures that guard it. “In the coming weeks we expect to consolidate the visual aesthetics with three Latin American illustrators in charge of bringing these comic books to life,” he told Variety.

“As Pablo comments, this space continues to grow year by year, and I dare say it houses some of...

Jpegmafia and Danny Brown Share New EP Scaring the Hoes Dlc Pack: Stream
Image
Taking a cue from video games, Jpegmafia and Danny Brown have expanded their collaborative album, Scaring The Hoes, with a new four-track EP they’re calling Dlc Pack. Stream the project via Apple Music or Spotify below.

Like the original album, Scaring the Hoes: Dlc Pack was produced entirely by Jpegmafia. The opening track, “Guess What Bitch, We Back Hoe!” features uptempo, club-influenced production, while “Hermanos” features a gorgeous vocal sample that contrasts with the duo’s sharp flows, and “Tell Me Where to Go” is surprisingly laidback with a soul flip of its own.

Meanwhile, the final track, “No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No!,” features an epic choir sample that pairs nicely with chippy Jpegmafia punchlines like, “Bitch, I ain’t Baby Keem,...

Better Call Saul: Who Is Max? Gus Fring's Memorial Explained
Image
The "Dedicated to Max" Better Call Saul Easter egg is a dedication to a character previously introduced on Breaking Bad who holds special significance for Gus Fring. Situated at the center of a small and peaceful Mexican village is a luxuriously out-of-place yet tastefully designed memorial fountain with an inscription that reads “Dedicado A Max” or "Dedicated to Max." Though Better Call Saul gives no explanation as to what this means, clues are laid out in Breaking Bad that reveal more about the character of Gus Fring.

Gus Fring is introduced in Breaking Bad as a brilliant and ruthless drug kingpin who hides in plain sight thanks to his public persona as a successful and charitable business owner. However, Better Call Saul humanizes Gus Fring as the spinoff series dives deeper into his character and shows new aspects of her personality and motivations. This includes the tribute he has given to the character of Max,...
