Exclusive: The Forsyte family looks set to become a fixture on PBS Masterpiece as the network is ready to renew the period drama before the first season has even premieres.
The Forsytes is a glossy adaptation of The Forsyte Saga, John Galsworthy’s sweeping portrait of a wealthy British family in 1880s London.
Deadline hears that filming on a second season is expected to take place over the summer in the UK, though PBS Masterpiece has not confirmed the drama’s renewal. A premiere date for Season 1 has yet to be revealed.
It comes after Paramount-owned broadcaster Channel 5 revealed that it had acquired The Forsytes in the UK. Channel 5 also combines with PBS Masterpiece on hit series All Creatures Great and Small.
Produced by Poldark maker Mammoth Screen, The Forsytes‘ ensemble cast is led by BAFTA-winner Francesca Annis (Lillie), who plays formidable matriarch Ann.

Last year, filmmaker Fede Álvarez joined a very select group of directors when he stood at the helm of the latest installment in the beloved Alien franchise. Bringing the sci-fi film series back to its roots, the director’s Alien: Romulus made Xenomorphs horrifying again, terrorizing audiences with the Cailee Spaeny (Civil War) and David Jonsson-led (Murder Is Easy) production. Those of us who have followed Álvarez’s career knew we were in for a treat with his dip into the Alien universe, as the writer and director has long been giving audiences plenty of reasons to leave a nightlight on.

The recent rumor that the next Alien movie might be set to bring back Sigourney Weaver to play a de-aged Ellen Ripley was met with a mixture of excitement and trepidation from fans of the classic sci-fi horror franchise, but it seems we won't be seeing the iconic heroine in action again after all - at least, not in the Romulus sequel.
Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez responded on social media, stating that the report was "fun gossip. But not true at all."

Though Alien: Romulus received a mostly positive response from critics and fans, one aspect of the movie that was met with almost universal backlash was the likeness of a deceased actor being used for a new character via VFX.
When Rain Carradine and her crew arrive on the derelict space station, they learn that the ship's android is still functional despite clearly being in very bad shape after a Xenomorph attack. They plug him in to discover what happened, and we see that the synthetic is the same model as Ash from Ridley Scott's original movie.
The late Ian Holm was "resurrected" (with permission from the actor's estate) to achieve this, but even setting aside the controversy surrounding the practice of "digital necromancy," the effects used to portray the character were... not the best.
Some shots looked okay, but for the majority of Rook's screen-time, his face basically...

Alien: Romulus was a success at the box office while also proving to be a big hit with critics, and 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell recently confirmed that early plans are in pace for a sequel.
Director Fede Álvarez has now indicated that he is in talks to return, while explaining why he's hesitant to move forward until they have a story worth telling.

The Alien: Romulus cast includes actors who've been headlining recent blockbusters to fresh faces who could become tomorrow's biggest stars. Set chronologically between the events of Alien and Aliens, the film follows a group of six young adults as they try to scavenge supplies for a lengthy cosmic trip from a derelict space station. However, they're unaware the station is abandoned and in ruins because of the creatures trapped aboard, and they're more than eager to lash out at any visitors.
One of the often overlooked strengths of Alien was the way the film bucked traditional sci-fi castings and instead focused on a diverse collection of actors that brought a grounded humanity to their performances. This is something Alien: Romulus looked to replicate, keeping much of the film's focus centered solely on the central cast of six young adults trying to make their way across the cosmos to a brighter future.

Fede Álvarez's franchise revival, Alien: Romulus, was a big hit at the box office, so we wouldn't be at all surprised if the Don't Breathe director was already in talks to helm a sequel.
If you happened to miss the movie on the big screen, Romulus is now available to purchase on Digital platforms, and Fandango has officially released an extended preview spotlighting what might be the most intense few minutes of the movie.
In the clip, we see Rain Carradine and her makeshift crew arrive at the seemingly abandoned and decommissioned Remus space station to salvage some fuel for their journey to a more hospitable planet.
Unfortunately, they soon find out that dozens of face-huggers were in the process of being transported in stasis, and are released when Andy tries to access the ship's computer.

2024 got off to a very rough start at the box office, particularly in regards to mainstream horror releases. In 2022 and 2023, horror proved to be one of the most bankable genres that theaters could depend on in the aftermath of the pandemic. Unfortunately, the likes of "Night Swim," "Imaginary," "Abigail," and others disappointed earlier this year. Things have rebounded and we now have hits such as "A Quiet Place: Day One" and the unexpected $100 million hit that was "Longlegs." One movie stands tall above the rest though, and that movie is "Alien: Romulus." Even more crazy to consider? That movie nearly went straight to Hulu.
On its fourth weekend in theaters, director Fede Alvarez's "Romulus" added another $3.9 million to its ever-growing total domestically. "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" took the lion's share of the attention with a massive $111 million opening, but the latest "Alien" movie is still holding its own. To that end,...

Alien: Romulus contains quite a few call-backs to Ridley Scott's original masterpiece and James Cameron's sequel, but it also reintroduces a concept from one of the less popular movies in the franchise, Alien: Resurrection.
Towards the end of the film, a pregnant and dying Kay injects herself with the Prometheus 5 formula to keep herself alive. Though she does survive (for a while), this ultimately results in her giving birth to a human/alien hybrid.
Named "The Offspring" in the credits, this rather terrifying creature does look a lot better than the albino monstrosity from Resurrection, but introducing another hybrid was a choice that not everyone was fully on board with... including the studio!
While speaking to THR, director Fede Alvarez revealed that the studio did initially have some reservations.
"They did [push back] at the beginning [with regard to the Offspring], but not because they didn’t like it. They just thought, 'Is it too much?...

Alien: Romulus is set at some point in the 57-year gap between Ridley Scott's original and James Cameron's Aliens, which means Ellen Ripley was out there - somewhere!
The movie contains several call-backs to earlier films in the franchise, but aside from that quote towards the end, there didn't appear to be any direct references or nods to Sigourney Weaver's iconic heroine.
Or so we thought!
While chatting to the ReelBlend podcast, director Fede Álvarez revealed that there are “a few clues I’ve planted in the movie,” before adding that “it kind of defeats the whole purpose” if he points out exactly what they are.
There's been some speculation that Ripley's escape shuttle can be seen blasting away from the wreckage of the Nostromo at the beginning of the movie.
The filmmaker also suggests that there may have been early discussions about somehow working Ripley into the movie.

Alien: Romulus Ends Deadpool And Wolverine's 3-Week Run As Box Office No. 1 With $100M+ Global Debut
The Xenomorphs have put an end to Wade Wilson and Logan's three-week run as kings of the box office.
Disney/20th Century Studios' Alien: Romulus had an even stronger opening weekend than expected both domestically and overseas, and has knocked Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine off the top spot.
The Fede Alvarez-directed sci-fi horror flick took in $45.1 million (well ahead of a projected high-$20 million debut) in North America to give it the second-best opening of the franchise, not adjusted for inflation. Internationally, Romulus opened to $66.7 million for a worldwide start of $108.2 million.
This is a great start for the movie, which was originally slated to go direct to streaming on the Disney-owned Hulu before the (wise) decision was made to shift to theatrical at the start of principal photography.

Alien: Romulus has slashed its way into theaters this weekend and, unsurprisingly, it's opened at #1 in North America. According to Deadline, current projections point to Fede Alvarez's reboot debuting with north of $40 million following a combined $18.5 million from Thursday previews/Friday.
The movie is already "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with 81% and has been awarded a B+ CinemaScore. Alien was released before CinemaScore's introduction but James Cameron's sequel, Aliens, has the franchise's best score with an A.
After that, there's Alien vs. Predator (B), Prometheus (B), Alien: Covenant (B), Alien Resurrection (B-), Alien3 (C), and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (C).
A B+ puts Alien: Covenant right behind Aliens as the second-best-reviewed instalment, so that's a solid result.
Back to those box office takings, and Deadpool & Wolverine will slip to #2 with a projected $27 million - $29 million after a $8.5 million Friday. It Ends With Us is looking at third place with a $23 million haul.

Alien: Romulus is now in theaters, and while reviews have been very positive for the most part, you may have noticed that quite a few critics mentioned something that didn't work for them (some had no problem spoiling it outright).
Below, we break down what will likely be the most controversial and divisive aspect of the movie.
If you haven't been to see the movie yet, major spoilers follow.
When Rain Carradine and her crew arrive on the derelict space station, they discover that the ship's android is still functional despite clearly being in very bad shape after a Xenomorph attack. They plug him in to discover what happened, and we see that the synthetic (sorry... artificial person) is the same model as Ash from Ridley Scott's original movie.
Yes, the late Ian Holm is resurrected via CGI (AI?), and the results are just as ghastly and unconvincing as...

We haven't seen the dreaded creatures known as the Xenomorph(s) since Ridley Scott's highly divisive Alien: Covenant in 2017, but the acid-blooded beasties make their long-awaited return to the big screen in Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus this Friday.
Though some dedicated fans of the long-running franchise believe "there are no bad Alien movies," it's hard to argue with the perception that none of them have come close to Scott's original masterpiece or James Cameron's more action-heavy sequel. A tall task, no doubt, but Alvarez does succeed in recapturing the claustrophobic chills and visceral terror of those first two films - even if he overindulges in nostalgia while he's at it.
Set at some point in the 57-year gap between the events of Alien and Aliens, Romulus focuses on a young orphaned space colonizer named Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny) and her android brother Andy (David Jonsson) eking out...

Alien: Romulus bursts into theaters this Friday, and following (mostly) positive social media reactions, the full review embargo lifted earlier today.
Though there are a few negative verdicts, the majority of critics were very impressed with Fede Alvarez's revival, which is being hailed as a return to form for the long-running franchise after several disappointing/divisive instalments.
With 95 reviews counted so far, Romulus is now Certified Fresh at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Honoring its nightmarish predecessors while chestbursting at the seams with new frights of its own, Romulus injects some fresh acid blood into one of cinema's great horror franchises," reads the critics consensus.
Have a read through some reactions at the links below, and keep an eye out for our review a bit later.

The first social media reactions to Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus are in (via SFFGazette.com) following last night's early screening, and the movie is being hailed as "among the very best" of the franchise (one post actually claims that it is the best).
These initial reactions are almost always at least somewhat hyperbolic, and while we're sure Romulus is very good/great, are we really supposed to believe that it's better or even as good as Ridley Scott's masterpiece or James Cameron's sequel?
At any rate, it does sound like the movie has managed to recapture some of the sustained dread and pervasive atmosphere of the original Alien, and several posts mention an insane final act.
Have a read through the reactions below, and check out a new teaser.

This latest footage teases all manner of Alien terror action, including several stunning shots of the titular star beast, the petrifying facehuggers, and how both will torture our latest group of unsuspecting victims. Based on everything thats been shown from Alien: Romulus so far, we could not only have a sci-fi horror classic on our hands, but also an Alien installment that will finally live up to the first two outings.

The Alien franchise has undergone ebbs and flows in its popularity, but Alien: Romulus has re-established it as one of the most exciting cinematic universes out today. Part of the films charm comes from lack of reliance on CGI and its heavy use of practical effects which director Fede lvarez has plenty of experience with.
In an interview with Screen Rant, lvarez talked about his experience shooting 2013s Evil Dead, which was a re-imagining of Sam Raimis 1981 project The Evil Dead. lvarezs film was a reboot to the horror genre as its displays of guts and gore relied on practical effects, not computers. lvarez discussed the lessons he learned on the project, and how they applied to Alien: Romulus, saying, "Well every movie is a film school in some way, you learn so much. I'm sure these guys learn too. Every experience and every movie you make you come out...

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th – and with the release date just a few weeks away, the film was promoted with a panel at Comic-Con today, with Álvarez in attendance alongside cast members Cailee Spaeny (Civil War), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder Is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home).
The San Diego Comic-Con panel for Alien: Romulus began with a sizzle reel showing the desperate state of the future world. The young protagonists are confused as they explore their new surroundings. Alan Seeger’s “I Have a Rendevous with Death” begins to play. The reel then cuts to the group battling a swarm of Face Huggers. It’s the same footage guests saw at CinemaCon earlier this year.

She's the one you're rooting for in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, especially by the end of the Prime Video series' epic first season. After all, Welsh actress Morfydd Clark steals the show as Galadriel. Since season two of The Rings of Power is right around the corner (releasing Aug. 29), Clark was able to tease what's to come with the highly anticipated next installment without revealing too much, of course. "I love mortal enemies and particularly mortal enemies that are very well-dressed. And I think we've got that extra in this one," Clark told MovieWeb. "So I'm really excited for people to see mortal enemies."
Clark is referring to the character Halbrand, played by Charlie Vickers, whom she shared numerous scenes with in season one. Halbrand has a dark side, as viewers ultimately discover. "He's very good at what he's doing. He's unfortunately evil and incredibly competent,...

Exclusive: Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley mysteries are being given a new lease of life.
More than 15 years on from the closer of the BBC’s mid-noughties adaptation, BritBox International, Wolf Hall producer Playground and Salt Films are developing Lynley, a new version, which is being penned by Sherlock writer Steve Thompson and directed by Ed Bazalgette.
Leo Suter (Vikings: Valhalla) and Sofia Barclay (Ted Lasso) are leading the adaptation, playing Di Thomas Lynley and DS Barbara Havers, an aristocratic police detective and maverick sergeant from a working class background. Together, the mismatched duo become a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done, while the series tackles issues around personality, gender and class.

Exclusive: BritBox International is operating “autonomously” and free of “creative pressure” from the BBC, according to its president, who branded the streamer “the best route to market for British TV outside of the UK.”

The deal was one of convenience, fulfilling the BBC’s desire to grow internationally while ITV sought to pump investment into new domestic streamer Itvx.

Alien: Romulus has understandably become one of this summer's most highly anticipated movies. Based on what we've seen thus far, all signs point to it following in the footsteps of Prey (Hulu's 2022 Predator reboot) as a return to form for the franchise.
Tickets went on sale this past Thursday and Total Film (via SFFGazette.com) just unleashed two new covers for its next issue.
The Xenomorph looms large on both and, after years of being portrayed as cannon fodder, it looks like filmmaker Fede Alvarez plans to use them to strike fear into our hearts all over again.
"I think we all have our favorite creatures in these movies," the filmmaker recently said. "Facehuggers have always been the ones that scare me the most. The idea of what would happen if the Facehugger gets you, you'll wish for the Xenomorph. You'll wish for a quick death instead of what...

Alvarez also notes that the relationship between Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny) and her android foster brother, Andy (David Jonsson), is the "heart of the movie."

Author Agatha Christie passed away nearly fifty years ago, but her stories are still alive in a major way. A year rarely goes by without some sort of Christie adaptation making its way out into the world, with recent examples including the Kenneth Branagh films Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and A Haunting in Venice, the BBC series Murder Is Easy, and the upcoming three-part limited series Towards Zero. Another Christie adaptation that’s in the works is the Netflix series The Seven Dials Mystery, which is set to star Mia McKenna-Bruce (How to Have Sex), Helena Bonham Carter (Fight Club), and Martin Freeman (Black Panther).

The BBC and BritBox International have secured A-list talent for their latest Agatha Christie adaptation.
Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston has been cast in Towards Zero, potentially the highest-profile actor to appear in a BBC Christie series since John Malkovich played Poirot in 2018’s The ABC Murders.
Huston will play the aunt of lead character Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). After a scandalous celebrity divorce, the British tennis star and his ex-wife Audrey (Ella Lily Hyland) make the unthinkable decision to spend a summer together at Gull’s Point, their childhood home and the coastal estate of Nevile’s aunt, Lady Tressilian (Huston).
Revealed by Deadline several months back, the series will star Jackie Clune (Motherland), Grace Doherty (Call the Midwife), Jack Farthing (Rain Dogs), Khalil Gharbia (Mary & George), Adam Hugill (Sherwood), Mimi Keene (Sex Education), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Emmy winner Matthew Rhys (The Americans) and Oliver Award-winner Anjana Vasan (Black Mirror:...

The first full-length trailer for for Alien: Romulus will be released tomorrow and to build excitement for that, we have a nightmare-inducting poster putting a Facehugger (and its victim) front and centre.
It's a horrifying piece of imagery and one which suggests horror director Fede Álvarez intends to embrace the sci-fi franchise's horror roots. However, as much as he's been inspired by Alien, the filmmaker is also taking his cues from Aliens.
"To ask an Alien fan to choose between them is a perverse question," he recently told Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com). "So I thought, 'How do I do both?'"
"There’s a moment where the characters are walking around areas familiar from the Nostromo," says Álvarez. "Then they cross through that building and on the other side: boom! You’re in a hallway that looks like Hadley’s Hope [from Aliens]."

Fans have been waiting to see some more footage from Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus since the release of the chilling first teaser, and we now have an update on the full trailer for the iconic sci-fi horror franchise's return to the big screen.

In addition, Empire has shared a new official still featuring Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine and David Jonsson as her android foster brother, Andy.
Synthetics (or artificial persons if you'd rather not offend Bishop) have been a staple of the Alien franchise since the beginning, but it sounds like Romulus will introduce a human/android dynamic we haven't seen before.

Alien and Aliens are two drastically different films, yet they are both beloved by fans of the franchise. The first film is a suspense-centric horror, while the sequel is more of an all-out action epic. Alien: Romulus director Fede lvarez wants to blend the two into an ultimate Alien film.
In an interview with Empire, the filmmaker discussed the difficulty and excitement of the challenge of drawing from both Alien and Aliens, due to their disparate styles. "To ask an Alien fan to choose between them is a perverse question," explained Alvarez. "So I thought, 'How do I do both?'" The answer comes in the form of the galactic Renaissance Station being split into two: the Aliens-esque Romulus, from which the film derives its name, and Remus, which more closely resembles the setting of Alien.

Talk about effective trailers. The one-minute teaser for Alien: Romulus captures the terror of being trapped with a creature while not giving away any spoilers.
The teaser arrived along with a poster and new stills from the much-anticipated, long-awaited eighth entry in the Alien franchise. Alien: Romulus is set between 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens, and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter director Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead) confirmed how it fits into the Alien universe.
“I love all of those movies. I didn’t want to omit or ignore any of them when it comes to connections at a story level, character level, technology level and creature level. There’s always connections from Alien to Alien: Covenant,” said Álvarez says.
The sci-fi film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu.
